CayleyPy RL: Pathfinding and Reinforcement Learning on Cayley Graphs

This paper is the second in a series of studies on developing efficient artificial intelligence-based approaches to pathfinding on extremely large graphs (e.g. $10^{70}$ nodes) with a focus on Cayley graphs and mathematical applications. The open-source CayleyPy project is a central component of our research. The present paper proposes a novel combination of a reinforcement learning approach with a more direct diffusion distance approach from the first paper. Our analysis includes benchmarking various choices for the key building blocks of the approach: architectures of the neural network, generators for the random walks and beam search pathfinding. We compared these methods against the classical computer algebra system GAP, demonstrating that they "overcome the GAP" for the considered examples. As a particular mathematical application we examine the Cayley graph of the symmetric group with cyclic shift and transposition generators. We provide strong support for the OEIS-A186783 conjecture that the diameter is equal to n(n-1)/2 by machine learning and mathematical methods. We identify the conjectured longest element and generate its decomposition of the desired length. We prove a diameter lower bound of n(n-1)/2-n/2 and an upper bound of n(n-1)/2+ 3n by presenting the algorithm with given complexity. We also present several conjectures motivated by numerical experiments, including observations on the central limit phenomenon (with growth approximated by a Gumbel distribution), the uniform distribution for the spectrum of the graph, and a numerical study of sorting networks. To stimulate crowdsourcing activity, we create challenges on the Kaggle platform and invite contributions to improve and benchmark approaches on Cayley graph pathfinding and other tasks.

CayleyPy Growth: Efficient growth computations and hundreds of new conjectures on Cayley graphs (Brief version)

This is the third paper of the CayleyPy project applying artificial intelligence to problems in group theory. We announce the first public release of CayleyPy, an open source Python library for computations with Cayley and Schreier graphs. Compared with systems such as GAP and Sage, CayleyPy handles much larger graphs and performs several orders of magnitude faster. Using CayleyPy we obtained about 200 new conjectures on Cayley and Schreier graphs, focused on diameters and growth. For many Cayley graphs of symmetric groups Sn we observe quasi polynomial diameter formulas: a small set of quadratic or linear polynomials indexed by n mod s. We conjecture that this is a general phenomenon, giving efficient diameter computation despite the problem being NP hard. We propose a refinement of the Babai type conjecture on diameters of Sn: n^2/2 + 4n upper bounds in the undirected case, compared to previous O(n^2) bounds. We also provide explicit generator families, related to involutions in a square with whiskers pattern, conjectured to maximize the diameter; search confirms this for all n up to 15. We further conjecture an answer to a question posed by V M Glushkov in 1968 on directed Cayley graphs generated by a cyclic shift and a transposition. For nilpotent groups we conjecture an improvement of J S Ellenberg's results on upper unitriangular matrices over Z/pZ, showing linear dependence of diameter on p. Some conjectures are LLM friendly, naturally stated as sorting problems verifiable by algorithms or Python code. To benchmark path finding we created more than 10 Kaggle datasets. CayleyPy works with arbitrary permutation or matrix groups and includes over 100 predefined generators. Our growth computation code outperforms GAP and Sage up to 1000 times in speed and size.

CayleyPy-4: AI-Holography. Towards analogs of holographic string dualities for AI tasks

This is the fourth paper in the CayleyPy project, which applies AI methods to the exploration of large graphs. In this work, we suggest the existence of a new discrete version of holographic string dualities for this setup, and discuss their relevance to AI systems and mathematics. Many modern AI tasks -- such as those addressed by GPT-style language models or RL systems -- can be viewed as direct analogues of predicting particle trajectories on graphs. We investigate this problem for a large family of Cayley graphs, for which we show that surprisingly it admits a dual description in terms of discrete strings. We hypothesize that such dualities may extend to a range of AI systems where they can lead to more efficient computational approaches. In particular, string holographic images of states are proposed as natural candidates for data embeddings, motivated by the "complexity = volume" principle in AdS/CFT. For Cayley graphs of the symmetric group S_n, our results indicate that the corresponding dual objects are flat, planar polygons. The diameter of the graph is equal to the number of integer points inside the polygon scaled by n. Vertices of the graph can be mapped holographically to paths inside the polygon, and the usual graph distances correspond to the area under the paths, thus directly realising the "complexity = volume" paradigm. We also find evidence for continuous CFTs and dual strings in the large n limit. We confirm this picture and other aspects of the duality in a large initial set of examples. We also present new datasets (obtained by a combination of ML and conventional tools) which should be instrumental in establishing the duality for more general cases.

Algebraic properties of Manin matrices II: q-analogues and integrable systems

We study a natural q-analogue of a class of matrices with noncommutative entries, which were first considered by Yu. I. Manin in 1988 in relation with quantum group theory, (called Manin Matrices in [5]) . These matrices we shall call q-Manin matrices(qMMs). They are defined, in the 2x2 case, by the relations M_21 M_12 = q M_12 M_21; M_22 M_12 = q M_12 M_22; [M_11;M_22] = 1/q M_21 M_12 - q M_12 M_21: They were already considered in the literature, especially in connection with the q-Mac Mahon master theorem [16], and the q-Sylvester identities [25]. The main aim of the present paper is to give a full list and detailed proofs of algebraic properties of qMMs known up to the moment and, in particular, to show that most of the basic theorems of linear algebras (e.g., Jacobi ratio theorems, Schhur complement, the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and so on and so forth) have a straightforward counterpart for q-Manin matrices. We also show how this classs of matrices ?ts within the theory of quasi-determninants of Gel'fand-Retakh and collaborators (see, e.g., [17]). In the last sections of the paper, we frame our definitions within the tensorial approach to non-commutative matrices of the Leningrad school, and we show how the notion of q-Manin matrix is related to theory of Quantum Integrable Systems.

Algebraic properties of Manin matrices 1

We study a class of matrices with noncommutative entries, which were first considered by Yu. I. Manin in 1988 in relation with quantum group theory. They are defined as "noncommutative endomorphisms" of a polynomial algebra. More explicitly their defining conditions read: 1) elements in the same column commute; 2) commutators of the cross terms are equal: $[M_{ij}, M_{kl}] = [M_{kj}, M_{il}]$ (e.g. $[M_{11},M_{22}] = [M_{21},M_{12}]$). The basic claim is that despite noncommutativity many theorems of linear algebra hold true for Manin matrices in a form identical to that of the commutative case. Moreover in some examples the converse is also true. The present paper gives a complete list and detailed proofs of algebraic properties of Manin matrices known up to the moment; many of them are new. In particular we present the formulation in terms of matrix (Leningrad) notations; provide complete proofs that an inverse to a M.m. is again a M.m. and for the Schur formula for the determinant of a block matrix; we generalize the noncommutative Cauchy-Binet formulas discovered recently [arXiv:0809.3516], which includes the classical Capelli and related identities. We also discuss many other properties, such as the Cramer formula for the inverse matrix, the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, Newton and MacMahon-Wronski identities, Plucker relations, Sylvester's theorem, the Lagrange-Desnanot-Lewis Caroll formula, the Weinstein-Aronszajn formula, some multiplicativity properties for the determinant, relations with quasideterminants, calculation of the determinant via Gauss decomposition, conjugation to the second normal (Frobenius) form, and so on and so forth. We refer to [arXiv:0711.2236] for some applications.

Limits of Gaudin algebras, quantization of bending flows, Jucys--Murphy elements and Gelfand--Tsetlin bases

Gaudin algebras form a family of maximal commutative subalgebras in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the universal enveloping algebra $U(\g)$ of a semisimple Lie algebra $\g$. This family is parameterized by collections of pairwise distinct complex numbers $z_1,...,z_n$. We obtain some new commutative subalgebras in $U(\g)^{\otimes n}$ as limit cases of Gaudin subalgebras. These commutative subalgebras turn to be related to the hamiltonians of bending flows and to the Gelfand--Tsetlin bases. We use this to prove the simplicity of spectrum in the Gaudin model for some new cases.

Quantum spectral curves, quantum integrable systems and the geometric Langlands correspondence

The spectral curve is the key ingredient in the modern theory of classical integrable systems. We develop a construction of the ``quantum spectral curve'' and argue that it takes the analogous structural and unifying role on the quantum level also. In the simplest, but essential case the ``quantum spectral curve'' is given by the formula "det"(L(z)-dz) [Talalaev04] (hep-th/0404153). As an easy application of our constructions we obtain the following: quite a universal receipt to define quantum commuting hamiltonians from the classical ones, in particular an explicit description of a maximal commutative subalgebra in U(gl(n)[t])/t^N and in U(\g[t^{-1}])\otimes U(t\g[t]); its relation with the center on the of the affine algebra; an explicit formula for the center generators and a conjecture on W-algebra generators; a receipt to obtain the q-deformation of these results; the simple and explicit construction of the Langlands correspondence; the relation between the ``quantum spectral curve'' and the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation; new generalizations of the KZ-equation; the conjecture on rationality of the solutions of the KZ-equation for special values of level. In the simplest cases we observe the coincidence of the ``quantum spectral curve'' and the so-called Baxter equation. Connection with the KZ-equation offers a new powerful way to construct the Baxter's Q-operator.

KZ equation, G-opers, quantum Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction and quantum Cayley-Hamilton identity

The Lax operator of the Gaudin type models is a 1-form on the classical level. In virtue of the quantization scheme proposed in [Talalaev04] (hep-th/0404153) it is natural to treat the quantum Lax operator as a connection; this connection is a particular case of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection [ChervovTalalaev06] (hep-th/0604128). In this paper we find a gauge transformation which produces the "second normal form" or the "Drinfeld-Sokolov" form. Moreover the differential operator naturally corresponding to this form is given precisely by the quantum characteristic polynomial [Talalaev04] of the Lax operator (this operator is called the G-oper or Baxter equation). This observation allows to relate solutions of the KZ and Baxter equations in an obvious way, and to prove that the immanent KZ-equations has only meromorphic solutions. As a corollary we obtain the quantum Cayley-Hamilton identity for the Gaudin-type Lax operators (including the general gl(n)[t] case). The presented construction sheds a new light on a geometric Langlands correspondence. We also discuss the relation with the Harish-Chandra homomorphism.

Universal G-oper and Gaudin eigenproblem

This paper is devoted to the eigenvalue problem for the quantum Gaudin system. We prove the universal correspondence between eigenvalues of Gaudin Hamiltonians and the so-called G-opers without monodromy in general gl(n) case modulo a hypothesys on the analytic properties of the solution of a KZ-type equation. Firstly we explore the quantum analog of the characteristic polynomial which is a differential operator in a variable $u$ with the coefficients in U(gl(n))^{\otimes N}. We will call it "universal G-oper". It is constructed by the formula "Det"(L(u)-\partial_u) where L(u) is the quantum Lax operator for the Gaudin model and "Det" is appropriate definition of the determinant. The coefficients of this differential operator are quantum Gaudin Hamiltonians obtained by one of the authors (D.T. hep-th/0404153). We establish the correspondence between eigenvalues and $G$-opers as follows: taking eigen-values of the Gaudin's hamiltonians on the joint eigen-vector in the tensor product of finite-dimensional representation of gl(n) and substituting them into the universal G-oper we obtain the scalar differential operator (scalar G-oper) which conjecturally does not have monodromy. We strongly believe that our quantization of the Gaudin model coincides with quantization obtained from the center of universal enveloping algebra on the critical level and that our scalar G-oper coincides with the G-oper obtained by the geometric Langlands correspondence, hence it provides very simple and explicit map (Langlands correspondence) from Hitchin D-modules to G-opers in the case of rational base curves. It seems to be easy to generalize the constructions to the case of other semisimple Lie algebras and models like XYZ.

Deformation quantization of submanifolds and reductions via Duflo-Kirillov-Kontsevich map

We propose the following receipt to obtain the quantization of the Poisson submanifold $N$ defined by the equations $f_i=0$ (where $f_i$ are Casimirs) from the known quantization of the manifold $M$: one should consider factor algebra of the quantized functions on $M$ by the images of $D(f_i)$, where $D: Fun(M) \to Fun(M)\otimes \CC[\hbar]$ is Duflo-Kirillov-Kontsevich map. We conjecture that this algebra is isomorphic to quantization of $Fun(N)$ with Poisson structure inherited from $M$. Analogous conjecture concerning the Hamiltonian reduction saying that "deformation quantization commutes with reduction" is presented. The conjectures are checked in the case of $S^2$ which can be quantized as a submanifold, as a reduction and using recently found explicit star product. It's shown that all the constructions coincide.

Rational Lax operators and their quantization

We investigate the construction of the quantum commuting hamiltonians for the Gaudin integrable model. We prove that [Tr L^k(z), Tr L^m(u) ]=0, for k,m < 4 . However this naive receipt of quantization of classically commuting hamiltonians fails in general, for example we prove that [Tr L^4(z), Tr L^2(u) ] \ne 0. We investigate in details the case of the one spin Gaudin model with the magnetic field also known as the model obtained by the "argument shift method". Mathematically speaking this method gives maximal Poisson commutative subalgebras in the symmetric algebra S(gl(N)). We show that such subalgebras can be lifted to U(gl(N)), simply considering Tr L(z)^k, k\le N for N<5. For N=6 this method fails: [Tr L_{MF}(z)^6, L_{MF}(u)^3]\ne 0 . All the proofs are based on the explicit calculations using r-matrix technique. We also propose the general receipt to find the commutation formula for powers of Lax operator. For small power exponents we find the complete commutation relations between powers of Lax operators.

Hitchin systems on singular curves II. Gluing subschemes

In this paper we continue our studies of Hitchin systems on singular curves (started in hep-th/0303069). We consider a rather general class of curves which can be obtained from the projective line by gluing two subschemes together (i.e. their affine part is: Spec $\{f \in \CC[z]: f(A(\ep))=f((B(\ep)); \ep^N=0 \}$, where $A(\ep), B(\ep)$ are arbitrary polynomials) . The most simple examples are the generalized cusp curves which are projectivizations of Spec $\{f \in \CC[z]: f'(0)=f''(0)=...f^{N-1}(0)=0 \}$). We describe the geometry of such curves; in particular we calculate their genus (for some curves the calculation appears to be related with the iteration of polynomials $A(\ep), B(\ep)$ defining the subschemes). We obtain the explicit description of moduli space of vector bundles, the dualizing sheaf, Higgs field and other ingredients of the Hitchin integrable systems; these results may deserve the independent interest. We prove the integrability of Hitchin systems on such curves. To do this we develop $r$-matrix formalism for the functions on the truncated loop group $GL_n(\CC[z]), z^N=0$. We also show how to obtain the Hitchin integrable systems on such curves as hamiltonian reduction from the more simple system on some finite-dimensional space.

Hitchin system on singular curves I

In this paper we study Hitchin system on singular curves. Some examples of such system were first considered by N. Nekrasov (hep-th/9503157), but our methods are different. We consider the curves which can be obtained from the projective line by gluing several points together or by taking cusp singularities. (More general cases of gluing subschemas will be considered in the next paper). It appears that on such curves all ingredients of Hitchin integrable system (moduli space of vector bundles, dualizing sheaf, Higgs field etc.) can be explicitly described, which may deserve independent interest. As a main result we find explicit formulas for the Hitchin hamiltonians. We also show how to obtain the Hitchin integrable system on such a curve as a hamiltonian reduction from a more simple system on some finite-dimensional space. In this paper we also work out the case of a degenerate curve of genus two and find the analogue of the Narasimhan-Ramanan parameterization of SL(2)-bundles. We describe the Hitchin system in such coordinates. As a demonstration of the efficiency of our approach we also rederive the rational and trigonometric Calogero systems from the Hitchin system on cusp and node with a marked point.
