Many-body fermionic excitations in Weyl semimetals due to elastic gauge fields

We study the single-particle spectrum of three-dimensional Weyl semimetals taking into account electron-phonon interactions that are the result of straining the material. We find that a well-defined fermionic excitation appears in addition to the standard peak corresponding to quasiparticle states as suggested by Landau-Fermi liquid theory. Contrary to the case of Dirac systems interacting via the Coulomb interaction, these satellite peaks appear even at lowest order in perturbation theory. The new excitations are anisotropic, as opposed to the single-particle spectrum, and their behavior is dictated by the Debye frequency, which naturally regulates the electron-phonon coupling.

A Nernst current from the conformal anomaly in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

We show that a conformal anomaly in Weyl/Dirac semimetals generates a bulk electric current perpendicular to a temperature gradient and the direction of a background magnetic field. The associated conductivity of this novel contribution to the Nernst effect is fixed by a beta function associated with the electric charge renormalization in the material.

Novel effects of strains in graphene and other two dimensional materials

The analysis of the electronic properties of strained or lattice deformed graphene combines ideas from classical condensed matter physics, soft matter, and geometrical aspects of quantum field theory (QFT) in curved spaces. Recent theoretical and experimental work shows the influence of strains in many properties of graphene not considered before, such as electronic transport, spin-orbit coupling, the formation of Moiré patterns, optics, ... There is also significant evidence of anharmonic effects, which can modify the structural properties of graphene. These phenomena are not restricted to graphene, and they are being intensively studied in other two dimensional materials, such as the metallic dichalcogenides. We review here recent developments related to the role of strains in the structural and electronic properties of graphene and other two dimensional compounds.

Spin-orbital interplay and topology in the nematic phase of iron pnictides

The origin of the nematic state is an important puzzle to be solved in iron pnictides. Iron superconductors are multiorbital systems and these orbitals play an important role at low energy. The singular $C_4$ symmetry of $d_{zx}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals has a profound influence at the Fermi surface since the $Γ$ pocket has vortex structure in the orbital space and the X/Y electron pockets have $yz$/$zx$ components respectively. We propose a low energy theory for the spin--nematic model derived from a multiorbital Hamiltonian. In the standard spin--nematic scenario the ellipticity of the electron pockets is a necessary condition for nematicity. In the present model nematicity is essentially due to the singular $C_4$ symmetry of $yz$ and $zx$ orbitals. By analyzing the ($π, 0$) spin susceptibility in the nematic phase we find spontaneous generation of orbital splitting extending previous calculations in the magnetic phase. We also find that the ($π, 0$) spin susceptibility has an intrinsic anisotropic momentum dependence due to the non trivial topology of the $Γ$ pocket.

Valley polarized electronic beam splitting in graphene

We show how the trigonal warping effect in doped graphene can be used to produce fully valley polarized currents. We propose a device that acts both as a beam splitter and a collimator of these electronic currents. The result is demonstrated trough an optical analogy using two dimensional photonic crystals.
