Two step chromospheric Moreton wave excitation in a blast-wave scenario. A case study: the December 06, 2006 event

We examine the capability of a blast-wave scenario -associated to a coronal flare or to the expansion of CME flanks- to reproduce a chromospheric Moreton phenomenon. We also simulate the Moreton event of December 06, 2006 considering both the corona and the chromosphere. To obtain a sufficiently strong coronal shock -able to generate a detectable chromospheric Moreton wave- a relatively low magnetic field intensity is required, in comparison with the active region values. Employing reasonable coronal constraints, we show that a flare ignited blast-wave or the expansion of the CME flanks emulated as an instantaneous or a temporal piston model, respectively, are capable to reproduce the observations.

A geometric interpretation of the Schützenberger group of a minimal subshift

The first author has associated in a natural way a profinite group to each irreducible subshift. The group in question was initially obtained as a maximal subgroup of a free profinite semigroup. In the case of minimal subshifts, the same group is shown in the present paper to also arise from geometric considerations involving the Rauzy graphs of the subshift. Indeed, the group is shown to be isomorphic to the inverse limit of the profinite completions of the fundamental groups of the Rauzy graphs of the subshift. A further result involving geometric arguments on Rauzy graphs is a criterion for freeness of the profinite group of a minimal subshift based on the Return Theorem of Berthé et. al.

3D MHD simulation of flare supra-arcade downflows in a turbulent current sheet medium

Supra-arcade downflows (SADs) are sunward, generally dark, plasma density depletions originated above posteruption flare arcades. In this paper using 3D MHD simulations we investigate if the SAD cavities can be produced by a direct combination of the tearing mode and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities leading to a turbulent current sheet (CS) medium or if the current sheet is merely the background where SADs are produced triggered by an impulsive deposition of energy. We find that to give account of the observational dark lane structures an addition of local energy, provided by a reconnection event, is required. We suggest that there may be a closed relation between characteristic SAD sizes and CS widths that must be satisfied to obtain an observable SAD.

Large random simplicial complexes, I

In this paper we develop further the multi-parameter model of random simplicial complexes. Firstly, we give an intrinsic characterisation of the multi-parameter probability measure. Secondly, we show that in multi-parameter random simplicial complexes the links of simplexes and their intersections are also multi-parameter random simplicial complexes. Thirdly, we find conditions under which a multi-parameter random simplicial complex is connected and simply connected.

Random Simplicial Complexes

In this paper we introduce a new model of random simplicial complexes depending on multiple probability parameters. This model includes the well-known Linial - Meshulam random simplicial complexes and random clique complexes as special cases. Topological and geometric properties of a multi-parameter random simplicial complex depend on the whole combination of the probability parameters and the thresholds for topological properties are convex sets rather than numbers (as in all previously known models). We discuss the containment properties, density domains and dimension of the random simplicial complexes.

On the sensitivity of extrasolar mass-loss rate ranges: HD 209458b a case study

We present a 3D hydrodynamic study of the effects that different stellar wind conditions and planetary wind structures have on the calculated Ly-$α$ absorptions produced during the transit of HD 209458b. Considering a range of stellar wind speeds $\sim$[350-800] km s$^{-1}$, coronal temperature $\sim$[3-7] $\times10^{6}$ K and two values of the polytropic index $Γ$ $\sim$[1.01-1.13], while keeping fixed the stellar mass loss rate, we found a that a $\dot M_p$ range between $\sim$[3-5] $\times 10^{10}$g s$^{-1}$ give account for the observational absorption in Ly-$α$ measured for the planetary system. Also, several models with anisotropic evaporation profiles for the planetary escaping atmosphere were carried out, showing that both, the escape through polar regions and through the night side yields larger absorptions than an isotropic planetary wind.

Muon tomography imaging algorithms for nuclear threat detection inside large volume containers with the Muon Portal detector

Muon tomographic visualization techniques try to reconstruct a 3D image as close as possible to the real localization of the objects being probed. Statistical algorithms under test for the reconstruction of muon tomographic images in the Muon Portal Project are here discussed. Autocorrelation analysis and clustering algorithms have been employed within the context of methods based on the Point Of Closest Approach (POCA) reconstruction tool. An iterative method based on the log-likelihood approach was also implemented. Relative merits of all such methods are discussed, with reference to full Geant4 simulations of different scenarios, incorporating medium and high-Z objects inside a container.

Simulation of descending multiple supra--arcade reconnection outflows in solar flares

After recent AIA observations by Savage, McKenzie and Reeves we revisit the scenario proposed by us in previous papers. We have shown that sunward, generally dark plasma features originated above posteruption flare arcades are consistent with a scenario where plasma voids (which we identify as supra--arcade reconnection outflows, SAROs) generate the bouncing and interfering of shocks and expansion waves upstream of an initial localized deposition of energy which is collimated in the magnetic field direction. In this paper we analyze the multiple production and interaction of SAROs and their individual structure that make them relatively stable features while moving. We compare our results with observations and with the scenarios proposed by other authors.

Numerical simulation of fundamental trapped sausage modes

Context: We integrate the 2D MHD ideal equations of a straight slab to simulate observational results associated with fundamental sausage trapped modes. Aims: Starting from a non-equilibrium state with a dense chromospheric layer, we analyse the evolution of the internal plasma dynamics of magnetic loops, subject to line-tying boundary conditions, and with the coronal parameters described in Asai et al. (2001) and Melnikov et al. (2002) to investigate the onset and damping of sausage modes. Methods: To integrate the equations we used a high resolution shock-capturing (HRSC) method specially designed to deal appropriately with flow discontinuities. Results: Due to non-linearities and inhomogeneities, pure modes are difficult to sustain and always occur coupled among them so as to satisfy, e.g., the line-tying constraint. We found that, in one case, the resonant coupling of the sausage fundamental mode with a slow one results in a non-dissipative damping of the former. Conclusions: In scenarios of thick and dense loops, where the analytical theory predicts the existence of fundamental trapped sausage modes, the coupling of fast and slow quasi-periodic modes -with a node at the center of the longitudinal speed- occur contributing to the damping of the fast mode. If a discontinuity in the total pressure between the loop and the corona is assumed, a fundamental fast sausage transitory leaky regime is spontaneously produced and an external compressional Alfvén wave takes away the magnetic energy.

Simulation of dark lanes in post--flare supra--arcades

Using two simulations of 1.5D, for the first time, in Costa et al. (2009) and Shulz et al. (2010) we numerically reproduce the observational dark inflows described in Verwichte et al. (2005). We show that the dark tracks can be explained as hot plasma vacuums generated upstream of a slow magnetoacoustic shock wave produced by a localized deposition of energy. In this work, we show that the overall 2D results are in agreement with the observational behaviour. However they show a slight shift in the characteristic parameter with respect to those found previously. Also, we confirm qualitatively the behaviour found in the previous papers, i.e. for a given numerical domain the period of the kink--like structure is a function of the magnetic field intensity: larger periods are associated with lower magnetic field intensities. Contrary to the 1D result -where the sunward dynamic is independent of the magnetic field intensity due to its exclusively waveguide role- in the 2D simulation the sunward speed is larger for larger values of the magnetic field. This can be interpreted as the capability of the low coronal plasma to collimate the deposition of energy into the magnetic field direction. The moving features consistent of low--density and high--temperature plasma cavities have larger inside values of the structuring parameter beta than the neighboring media. Thus, the voids seem to be the emergence structures of a whole nonlinear interacting plasma context of shocks and waves more than voided plasma loops magnetically structured.

Discontinuous Transition in a Boundary Driven Contact Process

The contact process is a stochastic process which exhibits a continuous, absorbing-state phase transition in the Directed Percolation (DP) universality class. In this work, we consider a contact process with a bias in conjunction with an active wall. This model exhibits waves of activity emanating from the active wall and, when the system is supercritical, propagating indefinitely as travelling (Fisher) waves. In the subcritical phase the activity is localised near the wall. We study the phase transition numerically and show that certain properties of the system, notably the wave velocity, are discontinuous across the transition. Using a modified Fisher equation to model the system we elucidate the mechanism by which the the discontinuity arises. Furthermore we establish relations between properties of the travelling wave and DP critical exponents.

Numerical simulation of dark lanes in post-flare supra-arcade

We integrate the MHD ideal equations to simulate dark void sunwardly moving structures in post--flare supra--arcades. We study the onset and evolution of the internal plasma instability to compare with observations and to gain insight into physical processes and characteristic parameters of these phenomena. The numerical approach uses a finite-volume Harten-Yee TVD scheme to integrate the 1D1/2 MHD equations specially designed to capture supersonic flow discontinuities. The integration is performed in both directions, the sunward radial one and the transverse to the magnetic field. For the first time, we numerically reproduce observational dark voids described in Verwichte et al. (2005). We show that the dark tracks are plasma vacuums generated by the bouncing and interfering of shocks and expansion waves, upstream an initial slow magnetoacoustic shock produced by a localized deposition of energy modeled with a pressure perturbation. The same pressure perturbation produces a transverse to the field or perpendicular magnetic shock giving rise to nonlinear waves that compose the kink--like plasma void structures, with the same functional sunward decreasing phase speed and constancy with height of the period, as those determined by the observations.

Numerical simulation of the internal plasma dynamics of post-flare loops

We integrate the MHD ideal equations of a slender flux tube to simulate the internal plasma dynamics of coronal post-flare loops. We study the onset and evolution of the internal plasma instability to compare with observations and to gain insight into physical processes and characteristic parameters associated with flaring events. The numerical approach uses a finite-volume Harten-Yee TVD scheme to integrate the 1D1/2 MHD equations specially designed to capture supersonic flow discontinuities. We could reproduce the observational sliding down and upwardly propagating of brightening features along magnetic threads of an event occurred on October 1st, 2001. We show that high--speed downflow perturbations, usually interpreted as slow magnetoacoustic waves, could be better interpreted as slow magnetoacoustic shock waves. This result was obtained considering adiabaticity in the energy balance equation. However, a time--dependent forcing from the basis is needed to reproduce the reiteration of the event which resembles observational patterns -commonly known as quasi--periodic pulsations (QPPs)- which are related with large scale characteristic longitudes of coherence. This result reinforces the interpretation that the QPPs are a response to the pulsational flaring activity.

Stability and mode analysis of solar coronal loops using thermodynamic irreversible energy principles II. Modes in twisted non--isothermal magnetic field configurations

We study the stability and the modes of non -- isothermal coronal loop models with different intensity values of the equilibrium twisted magnetic field. We use an energy principle obtained via non -- equilibrium thermodynamic arguments. The principle is expressed in terms of Hermitian operators and allows to consider together the coupled system of equations: the balance of energy equation and the equation of motion, to obtain modes and eigenmodes in a spectrum ranging from short to long--wavelength disturbances without having to use weak varying approximations of the equilibrium parameters. Long--wavelength perturbations introduce additional difficulties because the inhomogeneous nature of the medium determines disturbances leading to continuous intervals of eigenfrequencies which cannot be considered as purely sinusoidal. We analyze the modification of periods, modes structure and stability when the helicity, the magnetic field strength and the radius of the fluxtube are varied. The efficiency of the damping due to the resonant absorption mechanism is analyzed in a context of modes that can either impulsively release or storage magnetic energy. We find that the onset of the instability is associated to a critical value of the helicity and that the magnetic energy content has a determinant role on the instability of the system with respect to the stabilizing effect of the resonant absorption mechanism.

Comments on "Viscosity of high crystal content melts: dependence on solid fraction"

Here we propose a simple modification of the parameterisation presented in Costa (2005) [Viscosity of high crystal content melts: dependence on solid fraction, Geophys. Res. Lett., 32, 2005] which improves all the main positive features of it, yet at the same time, does not show a plateau region as the solid fraction tends to 1, generally increases the performance of the model, and exactly recovers the classical well established relationships valid for small fractions.
