Helicity modulus in the bilayer XY model by worm algorithm

The behaviour of the helicity modulus has been frequently employed to investigate the onset of the topological order characterizing the low-temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY-model. We here present how the analysis based on the use of this key quantity can be applied to the study of the properties of coupled layers. To this aim, we first discuss how to extend the popular worm algorithm to a layered sample, and in particular to the evaluation of the longitudinal helicity, that we introduce taking care of the fact that the virtual twist representing the elastic deformation one applies to properly define the helicity modulus can act on a single layer or on all of them. We then apply the method to investigate the bilayer XY-model, showing how the helicity modulus can be used to determine the phase diagram of the model as a function of temperature and inter-layer coupling strength

A dynamical model for Positive-Operator Valued Measures

We tackle the dynamical description of the quantum measurement process, by explicitly addressing the interaction between the system under investigation with the measurement apparatus, the latter ultimately considered as macroscopic quantum object. We consider arbitrary Positive Operator Valued Measures (POVMs), such that the orthogonality constraint on the measurement operators is relaxed. We show that, likewise the well-known von-Neumann scheme for projective measurements, it is possible to build up a dynamical model holding a unitary propagator characterized by a single time-independent Hamiltonian. This is achieved by modifying the standard model so as to compensate for the possible lack of orthogonality among the measurement operators of arbitrary POVMs.

Effective cutting of a quantum spin chain by bond impurities

Spin chains are promising media for short-haul quantum communication. Their usefulness is manifested in all those situations where stationary information carriers are involved. In the majority of the communication schemes relying on quantum spin chains, the latter are assumed to be finite in length, with well addressable end-chain spins. In this paper we propose that such configuration could actually be achieved by a mechanism that is able to effectively cut a spin ring through the insertion of bond defects. We then show how suitable physical quantities can be identified as figures of merit for the effectiveness of the cut. We find that, even for modest strengths of the bond defect, a ring is effectively cut at the defect site. In turn, this has important effects on the amount of correlations shared by the spins across the resulting chain, which we study by means of a scattering-based mechanism of a clear physical interpretation.

99%-fidelity ballistic quantum-state transfer through long uniform channels

Quantum-state transfer with fidelity higher than 0.99 can be achieved in the ballistic regime of an arbitrarily long one-dimensional chain with uniform nearest-neighbor interaction, except for the two pairs of mirror symmetric extremal bonds, say x (first and last) and y (second and last-but-one). These have to be roughly tuned to suitable values x ~ 2 N^{-1/3} and y ~ 2^{3/4} N^{-1/6}, N being the chain length. The general framework can describe the end-to-end response in different models, such as fermion or boson hopping models and XX spin chains.

Propagation of non-classical correlations across a quantum spin chain

We study the transport of quantum correlations across a chain of interacting spin-1/2 particles. As a quantitative figure of merit, we choose a symmetric version of quantum discord and compare it with the transported entanglement, addressing various operating regimes of the spin medium. Discord turns out to be better transported for a wide range of working points and initial conditions of the system. We relate this behavior to the efficiency of propagation of a single excitation across the spin chain. Moreover, we point out the role played by a magnetic field in the dynamics of discord in the effective channel embodied by the chain. Our analysis can be interestingly extended to transport processes in more complex networks and the study of non-classical correlations under general quantum channels.

Manipulating and protecting entanglement by means of spin environments

We study the dynamical behavior of two initially entangled qubits, each locally coupled to an environment embodied by an interacting spin chain. We consider energy-exchange qubit-environment couplings resulting in a rich and highly non trivial entanglement dynamics. We obtain exact results for the time-evolution of the concurrence between the two qubits and find that, by tuning the interaction parameters, one can freeze the dynamics of entanglement, therefore inhibiting its relaxation into the spin environments, as well as activate a sudden-death phenomenon. We also discuss the effects of an environmental quantum phase transition on the features of the two-qubit entanglement dynamics.

Vector chiral spin liquid phase in absence of geometrical frustration

Making use of detailed classical Monte Carlo simulations, we study the critical properties of a two dimensional planar spin model on a square lattice composed by weakly interacting helimagnetic chains. We find a large temperature window where the vector chirality order parameter, = , the key quantity in multiferroic systems, takes nonzero value in absence of long-range order or quasi-long-range order, so that, our model is the first example where, at finite temperatures, a vector chiral spin liquid phase in absence of geometrical frustration is explicitly reported. We also show that the strength of interchain interaction is fundamental in order to obtain the vector chiral spin liquid phase. The relevance of our results for three-dimensional models is also discussed.

Phase transitions in two-dimensional anisotropic quantum magnets

We consider quantum Heisenberg ferro- and antiferromagnets on the square lattice with exchange anisotropy of easy-plane or easy-axis type. The thermodynamics and the critical behaviour of the models are studied by the pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation, in order to evaluate the spin and anisotropy dependence of the critical temperatures. Results for thermodynamic quantities are reported and comparison with experimental and numerical simulation data is made. The obtained results allow us to draw a general picture of the subject and, in particular, to estimate the value of the critical temperature for any model belonging to the considered class.

Thermodynamics of quantum dissipative many-body systems

We consider quantum nonlinear many-body systems with dissipation described within the Caldeira-Leggett model, i.e., by a nonlocal action in the path integral for the density matrix. Approximate classical-like formulas for thermodynamic quantities are derived for the case of many degrees of freedom, with general kinetic and dissipative quadratic forms. The underlying scheme is the pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation (PQSCHA), equivalent to the variational approach by the Feynman-Jensen inequality with a suitable quadratic nonlocal trial action. A low-coupling approximation permits to get manageable PQSCHA expressions for quantum thermal averages with a classical Boltzmann factor involving an effective potential and an inner Gaussian average that describes the fluctuations originating from the interplay of quanticity and dissipation. The application of the PQSCHA to a quantum phi4-chain with Drude-like dissipation shows nontrivial effects of dissipation, depending upon its strength and bandwidth.

Dipolar interaction and incoherent quantum tunneling: a Monte Carlo study of magnetic relaxation

We study the magnetic relaxation of a system of localized spins interacting through weak dipole interactions, at a temperature large with respect to the ordering temperature but low with respect to the crystal field level splitting. The relaxation results from quantum spin tunneling but is only allowed on sites where the dipole field is very small. At low times, the magnetization decrease is proportional to $\sqrt{t}$ as predicted by Prokofiev and Stamp, and at long times the relaxation can be described as an extension of a relaxed zone. The results can be directly compared with very recent experimental data on Fe_8 molecular clusters.

Spin dynamics and magnetic correlation length in two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets

The correlated spin dynamics and the temperature dependence of the correlation length $ξ(T)$ in two-dimensional quantum ($S=1/2$) Heisenberg antiferromagnets (2DQHAF) on square lattice are discussed in the light of experimental results of proton spin lattice relaxation in copper formiate tetradeuterate (CFTD). In this compound the exchange constant is much smaller than the one in recently studied 2DQHAF, such as La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Thus the spin dynamics can be probed in detail over a wider temperature range. The NMR relaxation rates turn out in excellent agreement with a theoretical mode-coupling calculation. The deduced temperature behavior of $ξ(T)$ is in agreement with high-temperature expansions, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the pure quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Contrary to the predictions of the theories based on the Non-Linear $σ$ Model, no evidence of crossover between different quantum regimes is observed.

Effective Hamiltonian with holomorphic variables

The pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation (PQSCHA) permits to study a quantum system by means of an effective classical Hamiltonian - depending on quantum coupling and temperature - and classical-like expressions for the averages of observables. In this work the PQSCHA is derived in terms of the holomorphic variables connected to a set of bosonic operators. The holomorphic formulation, based on the path integral for the Weyl symbol of the density matrix, makes it possible to approach directly general Hamiltonians given in terms of bosonic creation and annihilation operators.

Thermodynamics of the quantum easy-plane antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

The classical XXZ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TAF) shows both an Ising and a BKT transition, related to the chirality and the in-plane spin components, respectively. In this paper the quantum effects on the thermodynamic quantities are evaluated by means of the pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation (PQSCHA), that allows one to deal with any spin value through classical MC simulations. We report the internal energy, the specific heat, and the in-plane correlation length of the quantum XX0 TAF, for S=1/2, 1, 5/2. The quantum transition temperatures turn out to be smaller the smaller the spin, and agree with the few available theoretical and numerical estimates.

In this work the PQSCHA is reformulated in terms of the holomorphic variables connected to a set of bosonic operators. The holomorphic formulation, based on the olomorphic path integral for the Weyl symbol of the density matrix, makes it possible to directly approach general Hamiltonians given in terms of bosonic creation and annihilation operators.

The quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice

The pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation, a semiclassical method based on the path-integral formulation of quantum statistical mechanics, is applied to the study of the thermodynamic behaviour of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice (QHAF). Results for various properties are obtained for different values of the spin and successfully compared with experimental data.

Effective potential for dissipative quantum systems

We consider quantum nonlinear systems with dissipation described within the Caldeira-Leggett model, i.e., by a nonlocal action in the path integral for the density matrix. Approximate classical-like formulas are derived in order to evaluate thermal averages of observables: the cases of linear and nonlinear dissipation are considered, and the framework is extended to the case of many degrees of freedom.

Effective Hamiltonian, Mori Product and Quantum Dynamics

An appropriate extension of the effective potential theory is presented that permits the approximate calculation of the dynamical correlation functions for quantum systems. These are obtained by evaluating the generating functionals of the Mori products of quantities related to the relaxation functions in the (PQSCHA) pure self consistent harmonic approximation.

Effective Potential, Mori Product and Quantum Dynamics

We present a method that permits the calculation of the dynamical correlation functions for quantum systems. These are obtained by evaluating the generating functionals of the static moments of the relaxation functions in a self-consistent approximation that can be obtained by an appropriate extension of the effective potential theory.
