Deformed Morse-like potential

We introduce an exactly solvable one-dimensional potential that supports both bound and/or resonance states. This potential is a generalization of the well-known 1D Morse potential where we introduced a deformation that preserves the finite spectrum property. On the other hand, in the limit of zero deformation, the potential reduces to the exponentially confining potential well introduced recently by A. D. Alhaidari. The latter potential supports infinite spectrum which means that the zero deformation limit is a critical point where our system will transition from the finite spectrum limit to the infinite spectrum limit. We solve the corresponding Schrodinger equation and obtain the energy spectrum and the eigenstates using the tridiagonal representation approach.

Bound states of a quartic and sextic inverse-powerlaw potential for all angular momenta

We use the tridiagonal representation approach to solve the radial Schrödinger equation for an inverse power-law potential of a combined quartic and sextic degrees and for all angular momenta. The amplitude of the quartic singularity is larger than that of the sextic but the signs are negative and positive, respectively. It turns out that the system has a finite number of bound states, which is determined by the larger ratio of the two singularity amplitudes. The solution is written as a finite series of square integrable functions written in terms of the Bessel polynomial.

Exponentially confining potential well

We introduce an exponentially confining potential well that could be used as a model to describe the structure of a strongly localized system. We obtain an approximate partial solution of the Schrödinger equation with this potential well where we find the lowest energy spectrum and corresponding wavefunctions. The Tridiagonal Representation Approach (TRA) is used as the method of solution, which is obtained as a finite series of square integrable functions written in terms of the Bessel polynomial.

Series solutions of Bessel-type differential equation in terms of orthogonal polynomials and physical applications

We obtain a class of exact solutions of a Bessel-type differential equation, which is a six-parameter linear ordinary differential equation of the second order with irregular (essential) singularity at the origin. The solutions are obtained using the Tridiagonal Representation Approach (TRA) as bounded series of square integrable functions written in terms of the Bessel polynomial on the real line. The expansion coefficients of the series are orthogonal polynomials in the equation parameters space. We use our findings to obtain solutions of the Schrödinger equation for some novel potential functions.

Mapping Schrödinger equation into a Heun-type and identifying the corresponding potential function, energy and wavefunction

We transform the Schrödinger wave equation to a nine-parameter Heun-type differential equation. Using our solutions of the latter in [J. Math. Phys. 59 (2018) 113507], we are able to identify the associated potential function, energy parameter, and write the corresponding wave function. Some of the solutions obtained correspond to new integrable quantum systems.

Confined systems associated with the discrete Meixner polynomials

Using a formulation of quantum mechanics based on orthogonal polynomials in the energy and physical parameters, we study quantum systems totally confined in space and associated with the discrete Meixner polynomials. We present several examples of such systems, derive their corresponding potential functions, and plot some of their bound states.

Construction of potential functions associated with a given energy spectrum

Using a formulation of quantum mechanics based on orthogonal polynomials in the energy and physical parameters, we present a method that gives the class of potential functions for exactly solvable problems corresponding to a given energy spectrum. In this work, we study the class of problems with a mix of continuous and discrete energy spectrum that are associated with the continuous dual Hahn polynomial. These include the one-dimensional logarithmic potential and the three-dimensional Coulomb plus linear potential.

J-matrix method of scattering in one dimension: The relativistic theory

We make a relativistic extension of the one-dimensional J-matrix method of scattering. The relativistic potential matrix is a combination of vector, scalar, and pseudo-scalar components. These are non-singular short-range potential functions (not necessarily analytic) such that they are well represented by their matrix elements in a finite subset of a square integrable basis set that supports a tridiagonal symmetric matrix representation for the free Dirac operator. Transmission and reflection coefficients are calculated for different potential coupling modes. This is the first of a two-paper sequence where we develop the theory in this part then follow it with applications in the second.

Bound states and the potential parameter spectrum

In this article, we answer the following question: If the wave equation possesses bound states but it is exactly solvable for only a single non-zero energy, can we find all bound state solutions (energy spectrum and associated wavefunctions)? To answer this question, we use the "tridiagonal representation approach" to solve the wave equation at the given energy by expanding the wavefunction in a series of energy-dependent square integrable basis functions in configuration space. The expansion coefficients satisfy a three-term recursion relation, which is solved in terms of orthogonal polynomials. Depending on the selected energy we show that one of the potential parameters must assume a value from within a discrete set called the "potential parameter spectrum" (PPS). This discrete set is obtained from the spectrum of the above polynomials and can be either a finite or an infinite discrete set. Inverting the relation between the energy and the PPS gives the bound state energy spectrum. Therefore, the answer to the above question is affirmative.

Tridiagonal Representation Approach in Quantum Mechanics

We present an algebraic approach for finding exact solutions of the wave equation. The approach, which is referred to as the Tridiagonal Representation Approach (TRA), is inspired by the J-matrix method and based on the theory of orthogonal polynomials. The class of exactly solvable problems in this approach is larger than the conventional class. All properties of the physical system (energy spectrum of the bound states, phase shift of the scattering states, energy density of states, etc.) are obtained in this approach directly and simply from the properties of the associated orthogonal polynomials.

Towards a finite conformal QED

In 1986, while at UCLA working with C. Fronsdal and M. Flato, I proposed a model for conformal QED that I claimed to be divergence-free and nontrivial. The results for one loop calculation were given. However, a debate about unitarity and nontriviality of the model caused the withholding of publication of that work. Now and more than 30 years, students and colleagues suggested that with recent results there is a merit to the publication of the original study so that the problem could be revisited, independently investigated and the calculations be repeated. Consequently, I present here the work exactly as it appeared then in a UCLA preprint of the Theoretical Elementary Particle physics group with preprint number UCLA/86/TEP/31.

Open problem in orthogonal polynomials

Using an algebraic method for solving the wave equation in quantum mechanics, we encountered a new class of orthogonal polynomials on the real line. It consists of a four-parameter polynomial with continuous spectrum on the whole real line and two of its discrete versions; one with a finite spectrum and another with countably infinite spectrum. A second class of these new orthogonal polynomials appeared recently while solving a Heun-type equation. Based on these results and on our recent study of the solution space of an ordinary differential equation of the second kind with four singular points, we introduce a modification of the Askey scheme of hyper-geometric orthogonal polynomials. Up to now, these polynomials are defined by their three-term recursion relations and initial values. However, their other properties like the weight functions, generating functions, orthogonality, Rodrigues-type formulas, etc. are yet to be derived analytically. Due to the prime significance of these polynomials in physics and mathematics, we call upon experts in the field of orthogonal polynomials to study them, derive their properties and write them in closed form (e.g., in terms of hypergeometric functions).

Series solution of a ten-parameter second order differential equation with three regular and one irregular singularities

We introduce a ten-parameter ordinary linear differential equation of the second order with four singular points. Three of these are finite and regular whereas the fourth is irregular at infinity. We use the tridiagonal representation approach to obtain a solution of the equation as bounded infinite series of square integrable functions that are written in terms of the Jacobi polynomials. The expansion coefficients of the series satisfy three-term recursion relation, which is solved in terms of a modified version of the continuous Hahn orthogonal polynomial.

Exact scattering and bound states solutions for novel hyperbolic potentials with inverse square singularity

We use the Tridiagonal Representation Approach (TRA) to obtain exact scattering and bound states solutions of the Schrödinger equation for short-range inverse-square singular hyperbolic potentials. The solutions are series of square integrable functions written in terms of the Jacobi polynomial with the Wilson polynomial as expansion coefficients. The series is finite for the discrete bound states and infinite, but bounded, for the continuum scattering states.

Electric dipole and quadrupole contributions to valence electron binding in a charge-screening environment

We make a multipole expansion of the atomic/molecular electrostatic charge distribution as seen by the valence electron up to the quadrupole term. The Tridiagonal Representation Approach (TRA) is used to obtain an exact bound state solution associated with an effective quadrupole moment and assuming that the electron-molecule interaction is screened by suborbital electrons. We show that the number of states available for binding the electron is finite forcing an energy jump in its transition to the continuum that could be detected experimentally in some favorable settings. We expect that our solution gives an alternative, viable and simple description of the binding of valence electron(s) in atoms/molecules with electric dipole and quadrupole moments. We also ascertain that our model implies that a pure quadrupole-bound anion cannot exist in such a charge-screening environment.

Nonlinear conformal-degree-preserving Dirac equations in 2+1 space-time

We propose nonlinear Dirac equations where the conformal degree of the self-interaction terms are equal to that of the Dirac operator and the coupling parameters are dimensionless. As such, the massless equation is conformally invariant and preserves the conformal degree for both the linear and nonlinear components. In 2+1 space-time, we use these features to propose three- and four-parameter nonlinear Dirac equation models that might be useful for applications in 2D systems such as graphene sheets, ribbons and nanotubes.

Series solutions of Heun-type equation in terms of orthogonal polynomials

We introduce a nine-parameter Heun-type differential equation and obtain three classes of its solutions as series of square integrable functions written in terms of the Jacobi polynomial. The expansion coefficients of the series satisfy three-term recursion relations, which are solved in terms of orthogonal polynomials with continuous and/or discrete spectra. Some of these are well-known polynomials while others are either new or modified versions of known ones.
