Problems of vacuum energy and dark energy

A simple description of the vacuum energy (cosmological constant) problem for non-experts is presented. Basic features of cosmology with non-zero vacuum energy are discussed. The astronomical data which indicate that the universe is filled with an anti-gravitating state of matter are described. The mechanisms which may lead to cancellation of almost infinite vacuum energy down to the astronomically observed value are discussed. The idea of dynamical adjustment is considered in some more detail.

Do neutrino flavor oscillations forbid large lepton asymmetry of the universe ?

It is shown that hypothetical neutrino-majoron coupling can suppress neutrino flavor oscillations in the early universe, in contrast to the usual weak interaction case. This reopens a window for a noticeable cosmological lepton asymmetry which is forbidden for the large mixing angle solution in the case of standard interactions of neutrinos.

Stability of a cosmological model with dynamical cancellation of vacuum energy

The stability of cosmological solutions in the recently suggested specific mechanism of dynamical compensation of vacuum energy is studied. It is found that the solutions in the original version lead to cosmological singularity which could be reached in final (and short) time. A modification of the interaction of the compensating field with gravity is suggested which allows to escape such singularity. It is shown that generic cosmological solution in this model tends to the Friedmann expansion regime even starting from initially large vacuum energy.

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and neutrinos

We present a brief review of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We discuss theoretical and observational uncertainties in deuterium and helium-4 primordial abundances and their implications for the determination of important cosmological parameters. We present, moreover, some recent results on active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe and on their effects on BBN.

BBN bounds on active-sterile neutrino mixing

Nucleosynthesis restrictions on mixing of active neutrinos with possible sterile ones are obtained with the account of experimentally determined mixing between all active neutrinos. The earlier derived bounds, valid in the absence of active-active mixing, are reanalyzed and significant difference is found in the resonance case. The results are obtained both analytically and numerically by solution of complete system of integro-differential kinetic equations. A good agreement between analytical and numerical approaches is demonstrated. A role of possibly large cosmological lepton asymmetry is discussed.

Can modified gravity explain accelerated cosmic expansion?

We show that the recently suggested explanations of cosmic acceleration by the modification of gravity at small curvature suffer violent instabilities and strongly disagree with the known properties of gravitational interactions.

Realistic cosmological model with dynamical cancellation of vacuum energy

We propose a model with a compensating scalar field whose back reaction to the cosmological curvature cancels possible vacuum energy density down to the terms of the order of the time dependent critical energy density. Thus the model simultaneously solves the mystery of the compensation of vacuum energy with the accuracy of 120 orders of magnitude and explains existence of the observed dark energy. At an early stage the suggested cosmological model might experience exponential expansion without an additional inflaton field.

Cosmology at the Turn of Centuries

A brief review of the present-day development of cosmology is presented for mixed physical audience. The universe history is briefly described. Unsolved problems are discussed, in particular, the mystery of the cosmological constant and dark energy, the problems of dark matter, and baryogenesis. A brief discussion of the cosmological role of neutrinos is also given.

Magnetic fields in cosmology

Different mechanisms which may possibly explain existence of magnetic fields on astronomically large scales are described. A recently suggested model of magnetic fields generation slightly before hydrogen recombination is discussed in more detail.

Generation of large scale magnetic fields at recombination epoch

It is argued that large scale cosmic magnetic field could be generated in the primeval plasma slightly before hydrogen recombination. Non-zero vorticity, necessary for that, might be created by the photon diffusion in the second order in the temperature fluctuations. The resulting seed fields at galactic scale would be only 4 orders of magnitude smaller than the observed ones and with a mild galactic dynamo amplifying the seed fields by the factor $\sim 10^4$ an existence of coherent magnetic fields in galaxies may be explained.

Cosmological Constraints on Neutrino Masses and Mixings

The bounds on neutrino masses and mixing that follows from the data on light element abundances, large scale structure formation, and angular fluctuations of cosmic microwave background radiation are analyzed. The role of neutrino oscillations in BBN and the bounds on cosmological lepton asymmetry are discussed.

Cosmological Implications of Neutrinos

The lectures describe several cosmological effects produced by neutrinos. Upper and lower cosmological limits on neutrino mass are derived. The role that neutrinos may play in formation of large scale structure of the universe is described and neutrino mass limits are presented. Effects of neutrinos on cosmological background radiation and on big bang nucleosynthesis are discussed. Limits on the number of neutrino flavors and mass/mixing are given.

Antimatter in the Universe

Different scenarios of baryogenesis are briefly reviewed from the point of view of possibility of generation of cosmologically interesting amount of antimatter. It is argued that creation of antimatter is possible and natural in many models. In some models not only anti-helium may be produced but also a heavier anti-elements and future observations of the latter would be critical for discovery or establishing stronger upper limits on existence of antimatter. Incidentally a recent observation of iron-rich quasar may present a support to one special model of antimatter creation.

Neutrinos in cosmology

Cosmological implications of neutrinos are reviewed. The following subjects are discussed at a different level of scrutiny: cosmological limits on neutrino mass, neutrinos and primordial nucleosynthesis, cosmological constraints on unstable neutrinos, lepton asymmetry of the universe, impact of neutrinos on cosmic microwave radiation, neutrinos and the large scale structure of the universe, neutrino oscillations in the early universe, baryo/lepto-genesis and neutrinos, neutrinos and high energy cosmic rays, and briefly some more exotic subjects: neutrino balls, mirror neutrinos, and neutrinos from large extra dimensions.

Cosmological bounds on neutrino degeneracy improved by flavor oscillations

We study three-flavor neutrino oscillations in the early universe in the presence of neutrino chemical potentials. We take into account all effects from the background medium, i.e. collisional damping, the refractive effects from charged leptons, and in particular neutrino self-interactions that synchronize the neutrino oscillations. We find that effective flavor equilibrium between all active neutrino species is established well before the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) epoch if the neutrino oscillation parameters are in the range indicated by the atmospheric neutrino data and by the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem. For the other solutions of the solar neutrino problem, partial flavor equilibrium may be achieved if the angle theta_13 is close to the experimental limit tan^2(theta_13)<0.065. In the LMA case, the BBN limit on the nu_e degeneracy parameter, |xi_nu|< 0.07, now applies to all flavors. Therefore, a putative extra cosmic radiation contribution from degenerate neutrinos is limited to such low values that it is neither observable in the large-scale structure of the universe nor in the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Existing limits and possible future measurements, for example in KATRIN, of the absolute neutrino mass scale will provide unambiguous information on the cosmic neutrino mass density, essentially free of the uncertainty of the neutrino chemical. potentials.

Mystery of Vacuum Energy or Rise and Fall of Cosmological Constant

Two sides of cosmological constant problem are discussed: a mysterious compensation of all contributions to vacuum energy with the accuracy of 100-50 orders of magnitude and a surprising equality of a constant vacuum energy density to the present-day value of time dependent cosmological energy density.

Neutrinos and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

The role of neutrinos in big bang nucleosynthesis is discussed. The bounds on the number of neutrino families, neutrino degeneracy, parameters of neutrino oscillations are presented. A model of chemically inhomogeneous, while energetically smooth, universe created by inhomogeneous cosmological neutrino asymmetry is described. Nucleosynthesis limits on production of right-handed neutrinos are considered.
