Elliptic and hexadecapole flow of charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Differential measurements of the elliptic (v_2) and hexadecapole (v_4) Fourier flow coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality or the number of participant nucleons (N_part) for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The v_{2,4} measurements at pseudorapidity |η|<=0.35 obtained with four separate reaction plane detectors positioned in the range 1.0<|η|<3.9 show good agreement, indicating the absence of significant η-dependent nonflow perturbations. Sizable values for v_4(p_T) are observed with a ratio v_4(p_T,N_part)/v_2^2(p_T,N_part)~0.8 for 50 200 this ratio increases up to 1.7 in the most central collisions.

Heavy flavor in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and RHIC II

In the initial years of operation, experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have identified a new form of matter formed in nuclei-nuclei collisions at energy densities more than 100 times that of a cold atomic nucleus. Measurements and comparison with relativistic hydrodynamic models indicate that the matter thermalizes in an unexpectedly short time, has an energy density at least 15 times larger than needed for color deconfinement, has a temperature about twice the critical temperature predicted by lattice QCD, and appears to exhibit collective motion with ideal hydrodynamic properties - a "perfect liquid" that appears to flow with a near-zero viscosity to entropy ratio - lower than any previously observed fluid and perhaps close to a universal lower bound. However, a fundamental understanding of the medium seen in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC does not yet exist. The most important scientific challenge for the field in the next decade is the quantitative exploration of the new state of nuclear matter. That will require new data that will, in turn, require enhanced capabilities of the RHIC detectors and accelerator. In this report we discuss the scientific opportunities for an upgraded RHIC facility - RHIC II - in conjunction with improved capabilities of the two large RHIC detectors, PHENIX and STAR. We focus solely on heavy flavor probes. Their production rates are calculable using the well-established techniques of perturbative QCD and their sizable interactions with the hot QCD medium provide unique and sensitive measurements of its crucial properties making them one of the key diagnostic tools available to us.

Pion Production by Protons on a Thin Beryllium Target at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c Incident Proton Momenta

An analysis of inclusive pion production in proton-beryllium collisions at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c proton beam momentum has been performed. The data were taken by Experiment 910 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The differential $π^+$ and $π^-$ production cross sections ($d^2σ/dpdΩ$) are measured up to 400 mRad in $θ_π$ and up to 6 GeV/c in $p_π$. The measured cross section is fit with a Sanford-Wang parameterization.

J/Psi -> ee and J/Psi -> μμMeasurements in AuAu and pp Collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

First results are presented from J/Psi -> ee and J/Psi -> μμmeasurements by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. These results are from a preliminary analysis of dielectrons from AuAu and pp data and dimuons from pp data measured in the RHIC run 2. A total cross section for J/Psi production in sqrt{s} = 200 GeV pp collisions of 3.8 \pm 0.6 (stat) \pm 1.3 (sys) microbarns is found. The J/Psi -> ee yield is presented versus number of binary collisions.

Inclusive Soft Pion Production from 12.3 and 17.5 GeV/c Protons on Be, Cu and Au

Differential cross-sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged pions in the momentum range 0.1 to 1.2 GeV/c in interactions of 12.3 and 17.5 GeV/c protons with Be, Cu, and Au targets. The measurements were made by Experiment 910 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron in Brookhaven National Laboratory. The cross-sections are presented as a function of pion total momentum and production polar angle $θ$ with respect to the beam.

Semi-Inclusive Lambda and Kshort Production in p-Au Collisions at 17.5 GeV/c

The first detailed measurements of the centrality dependence of strangeness production in p-A collisions are presented. Lambda and Kshort dn/dy distributions from 17.5 GeV/c p-Au collisions are shown as a function of "grey" track multiplicity and the estimated number of collisions, nu, made by the proton. The nu dependence of the Lambda yield deviates from a scaling of p-p data by the number of participants, increasing faster than this scaling for nu<=5 and saturating for larger nu. A slower growth in Kshort multiplicity with nu is observed, consistent with a weaker nu dependence of K-Kbar production than Y-K production.
