Unitarity and the Bethe-Salpeter Equation

We investigate the relation between different three-dimensional reductions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the analytic structure of the resultant amplitudes in the energy plane. This correlation is studied for both the $ϕ^2σ$ interaction Lagrangian and the $πN$ system with $s$-, $u$-, and $t$-channel pole diagrams as driving terms. We observe that the equal-time equation, which includes some of the three-body unitarity cuts, gives the best agreement with the Bethe-Salpeter result. This is followed by other 3-D approximations that have less of the analytic structure.

The equivalence theorem and the Bethe-Salpeter equation

We solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for two-particle scattering in a field-theoretical model using two lagrangians related by a field transformation. The kernel of the equation consists of the sum of all tree-level diagrams for each lagrangian. The solutions differ even if all four external particles are put on the mass shell, which implies that observables calculated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation depend on the representation of the theory. We point out that this violation of the equivalence theorem has a simple explanation and should be expected for any Bethe-Salpeter equation with a tree-level kernel. Implications for dynamical models of hadronic interactions are discussed.

Covariant meson-exchange model of the anti-kaon nucleon interaction

A covariant meson-exchange model of the anti-kaon nucleon interaction within the framework of the Bethe-Salpeter equation is presented. With just one free parameter we are able to get a good description of the available experimental data from below threshold to 300 MeV laboratory momentum.

Pion-nucleon scattering in a Bethe-Salpeter approach

A covariant model of elastic pion-nucleon scattering based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation is presented. We obtain a good description of the S- and P-wave phase shifts up to 360 MeV laboratory energy. We also compare results from the K-matrix approach and several 3-dimensional quasipotential equations to the Bethe-Salpeter equation.

Solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for pion-nucleon scattering

A relativistic description of pion-nucleon scattering based on the four-dimensional Bethe-Salpeter equation is presented. The kernel of the equation consists of s- and u-channel nucleon and delta pole diagrams, as well as rho and sigma exchange in the t-channel. The Bethe-Salpeter equation is solved by means of a Wick rotation, and good fits are obtained to the s- and p-wave phase shifts up to 360 MeV pion laboratory energy. The coupling constants determined by the fits are consistent with the commonly accepted values in the literature.

Covariant formulation of pion-nucleon scattering

A covariant model of elastic pion-nucleon scattering based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation is presented. The kernel consists of s- and u-channel nucleon and delta poles, along with rho and sigma exchange in the t-channel. A good fit is obtained to the s- and p-wave phase shifts up to the two-pion production threshold.

Role of retardation in 3-D relativistic equations

Equal-time Green's function is used to derive a three-dimensional integral equation from the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The resultant equation, in the absence of anti-particles, is identical to the use of time-ordered diagrams, and has been used within the framework of $ϕ^2σ$ coupling to study the role of energy dependence and non-locality when the two-body potential is the sum of $σ$-exchange and crossed $σ$ exchange. The results show that non-locality and energy dependence make a substantial contribution to both the on-shell and off-shell amplitudes.
