Weiss oscillations in the presence of small-angle impurity scattering

We calculate the magnetoresistivity of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a periodic potential within classical transport theory, using realistic models of impurity scattering. The magnetooscillations induced by geometric resonance of the cyclotron orbits in the periodic grating, known as Weiss oscillations, are shown to be affected strongly by the small-angle scattering processes dominant in conventional semiconductor heterostructures. Our results are in full agreement with experimental findings.

Semiclassical theory of transport in a random magnetic field

We study the semiclassical kinetics of 2D fermions in a smoothly varying magnetic field $B({\bf r})$. The nature of the transport depends crucially on both the strength $B_0$ of the random component of $B({\bf r})$ and its mean value $\bar{B}$. For $\bar{B}=0$, the governing parameter is $α=d/R_0$, where $d$ is the correlation length of disorder and $R_0$ is the Larmor radius in the field $B_0$. While for $α\ll 1$ the Drude theory applies, at $α\gg 1$ most particles drift adiabatically along closed contours and are localized in the adiabatic approximation. The conductivity is then determined by a special class of trajectories, the "snake states", which percolate by scattering at the saddle points of $B({\bf r})$ where the adiabaticity of their motion breaks down. The external field also suppresses the diffusion by creating a percolation network of drifting cyclotron orbits. This kind of percolation is due only to a weak violation of the adiabaticity of the cyclotron rotation, yielding an exponential drop of the conductivity at large $\bar{B}$. In the regime $α\gg 1$ the crossover between the snake-state percolation and the percolation of the drift orbits with increasing $\bar{B}$ has the character of a phase transition (localization of snake states) smeared exponentially weakly by non-adiabatic effects. The ac conductivity also reflects the dynamical properties of particles moving on the fractal percolation network. In particular, it has a sharp kink at zero frequency and falls off exponentially at higher frequencies. We also discuss the nature of the quantum magnetooscillations. Detailed numerical studies confirm the analytical findings. The shape of the magnetoresistivity at $α\sim 1$ is in good agreement with experimental data in the FQHE regime near $ν=1/2$.

Non-adiabatic scattering of a classical particle in an inhomogeneous magnetic field

We study the violation of the adiabaticity of the electron dynamics in a slowly varying magnetic field. We formulate and solve exactly a non-adiabatic scattering problem. In particular, we consider scattering on a magnetic field inhomogeneity which models scatterers in the composite-fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. The calculated non-adiabatic shift of the guiding center is exponentially small and exhibits an oscillatory behavior related to the "self-commensurability" of the drifting cyclotron orbit. The analytical results are complemented with a numerical simulation.

Velocity shift of surface acoustic waves due to interaction with composite fermions in a modulated structure

We study the effect of a periodic density modulation on surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation along a 2D electron gas near Landau level filling $ν=1/2$. Within the composite fermion theory, the problem is described in terms of fermions subject to a spatially modulated magnetic field and scattered by a random magnetic field. We find that a few percent modulation induces a large peak in the SAW velocity shift, as has been observed recently by Willett et al. As further support of this theory we find the dc resistivity to be in good agreement with recent data of Smet et al.

Intensity distribution for waves in disordered media: deviations from Rayleigh statistics

We study the intensity distribution function, P(I), for monochromatic waves propagating in quasi one-dimensional disordered medium, assuming that a point source and a point detector are embedded in the bulk of the medium. We find deviations from the Rayleigh statistics at moderately large I and a logarithmically-normal asymptotic behavior of P(I). When the radiation source and the detector are located close to the opposite edges of the sample (on a distance much less then the sample length), an intermediate regime with a stretched-exponential behavior of P(I) emerges.

Quantum Billiards with Surface Scattering: Ballistic Sigma-Model Approach

Statistical properties of energy levels and eigenfunctions in a ballistic system with diffusive surface scattering are investigated. The two-level correlation function, the level number variance, the correlation function of wavefunction intensities, and the inverse participation ratio are calculated.

Weiss Oscillations in Surface Acoustic Wave Propagation

The interaction of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) with a a two-dimensional electron gas in a periodic electric potential and a classical magnetic field is considered. We calculate the attenuation of the SAW and its velocity change and show that these quantities exhibit Weiss oscillations.

Electron-Electron Interaction in Disordered Mesoscopic Systems: Weak Localization and Mesoscopic Fluctuations of Polarizability and Capacitance

The weak localization correction and the mesoscopic fluctuations of the polarizability and the capacitance of a small disordered sample are studied systematically in 2D and 3D geometries. While the grand canonical ensemble calculation gives the positive magnetopolarizability, in the canonical ensemble (appropriate for isolated samples) the sign of the effect is reversed. The magnitude of mesoscopic fluctuations for a single sample exceeds considerably the value of the weak localization correction.

Composite fermions in a long-range random magnetic field: Quantum Hall effect versus Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations

We study transport in a smooth random magnetic field, with emphasis on composite fermions (CF) near half-filling of the Landau level. When either the amplitude of the magnetic field fluctuations or its mean value $\bar B$ is large enough, the transport is of percolating nature. While at $\bar{B}=0$ the percolation effects enhance the conductivity $σ_{xx}$, increasing $\bar B$ (which corresponds to moving away from half-filling for the CF problem) leads to a sharp falloff of $σ_{xx}$ and, consequently, to the quantum localization of CFs. We demonstrate that the localization is a crucial factor in the interplay between the Shubnikov-de Haas and quantum Hall oscillations, and point out that the latter are dominant in the CF metal.

Fluctuations of Conductance Peak Spacings in the Coulomb Blockade Regime: Role of Electron-Electron Interaction

We study influence of electron-electron interaction on statistics of Coulomb blockade peak spacings in disordered quantum dots. It is shown that the interaction combined with fluctuations of eigenfunctions of the Fermi sea, enhances the peak spacing fluctuations, in accordance with recent experiments. In addition, account of the spin degrees of freedom leads to a pronounced odd-even structure for weak interaction ($e^2/ε\ll v_F$); in the opposite case ($e^2/ε\gtrsim v_F$) this structure is washed out.

Composite fermions in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect: Transport at finite wavevector

We consider the conductivity tensor for composite fermions in a close to half-filled Landau band in the temperature regime where the scattering off the potential and the trapped gauge field of random impurities dominates. The Boltzmann equation approach is employed to calculate the quasiclassical transport properties at finite effective magnetic field, wavevector and frequency. We present an exact solution of the kinetic equation for all parameter regimes. Our results allow a consistent description of recently observed surface acoustic wave resonances and other findings.

Quantum corrections to the conductivity of fermion - gauge field models: Application to half filled Landau level and high-$T_c$ superconductors

We calculate the Altshuler-Aronov type quantum correction to the conductivity of $2d$ charge carriers in a random potential (or random magnetic field) coupled to a transverse gauge field. The gauge fields considered simulate the effect of the Coulomb interaction for the fractional quantum Hall state at half filling and for the $t-J$ model of high-$T_c$ superconducting compounds. We find an unusually large quantum correction varying linearly or quadratically with the logarithm of temperature, in different temperature regimes.

Gor'kov and Eliashberg Linear Response Theory: Rigorous Derivation and Limits of Applicability

A rigorous microscopic calculation of the polarizability of disordered mesoscopic particles within the grand canonical ensemble is given in terms of the supersymmetry method. The phenomenological result of Gor'kov and Eliashberg is confirmed. Thus the underlying assumptions of their method are justified. This encourages application of RMT in the Gor'kov--Eliashberg style to more complicated situations.

Correlations of Eigenfunctions in Disordered Systems

Correlations of eigenfunctions, $\langle|ψ_k(r_1)|^2|ψ_l(r_2)|^2\rangle$, in a disordered system are investigated. We derive general formulae expressing these correlation functions in terms of the supermatrix sigma-model. In particular case of weak localization regime we find that the correlations of the same eigenfunction are proportional to $g^{-1}$ for large distances, while the correlations of two different eigenfunctions cross over from $g^{-1}$ behavior for $r_1=r_2$ to $g^{-2}$ one for $\vert r_1 - r_2 \vert \gg l$, with $g$ and $l$ being the dimensionless conductance and the mean free path, respectively.

Quasiclassical approach to impurity effect on magnetooscillations in 2D metals

We develop a quasiclassical method based on the path integral formalism, to study the influence of disorder on magnetooscillations of the density of states and conductivity. The treatment is appropriate for electron systems in the presence of a random potential with large correlation length or a random magnetic field, which are characterisitic features of various 2D electronic systems presently studied in experiment. In particular, we study the system of composite fermions in the fractional quantum Hall effect device, which are coupled to the Chern--Simons field and subject to a long--range random potential.

Distribution of local density of states in disordered metallic samples: logarithmically normal asymptotics

Asymptotical behavior of the distribution function of local density of states (LDOS) in disordered metallic samples is studied with making use of the supersymmetric $σ$--model approach, in combination with the saddle--point method. The LDOS distribution is found to have the logarithmically normal asymptotics for quasi--1D and 2D sample geometry. In the case of a quasi--1D sample, the result is confirmed by the exact solution. In 2D case a perfect agreement with an earlier renormalization group calculation is found. In 3D the found asymptotics is of somewhat different type: $P(ρ)\sim \exp(-\mbox{const}\,|\ln^3ρ|)$.

Theory of Shubnikov--De Haas Oscillations Around the $ν=1/2$ Filling Factor of the Landau Level: Effect of Gauge Field Fluctuations

We present a theory of magnetooscillations around the $ν=1/2$ Landau level filling factor based on a model with a fluctuating Chern--Simons field. The quasiclassical treatment of the problem is appropriate and leads to an unconventional $\exp\left[-(π/ω_cτ^*_{1/2})^4\right]$ behavior of the amplitude of oscillations. This result is in good qualitative agreement with available experimental data.

Single Particle Relaxation in a Random Magnetic Field

We consider the single particle relaxation rate of 2D electrons subject to a random magnetic field. The density of states (DOS) oscillations in a uniform magnetic field (in addition to a random one) are studied. We define a gauge invariant single particle relaxation time as a parameter describing the amplitude of DOS oscillations. Unlike the conventional case of random potential scattering the broadening of the Landau levels does not depend on magnetic field.
