Perturbative approach to the infrared gluon propagator in the maximal Abelian gauge

The inclusion of a mass-like term for the gluon in Yang-Mills theories quantized in the Landau gauge has proven to be an effective way of reproducing lattice results for gauge-fixed correlation functions within perturbative computations. Since those quantities are gauge dependent, it is natural to question how general this prescription is for describing the infrared behavior of gluon and Faddeev-Popov ghost propagators in different gauges. In this work, we provide a systematic investigation of this issue in the maximal Abelian gauge, which cannot be deformed into the Landau gauge and has been investigated in gauge-fixed lattice simulations. We compute the one-loop non-Abelian and diagonal gluon propagators and perform fits to lattice data in the case of $SU(2)$. Our results show that the transverse component of the non-Abelian gluon propagator as well as the diagonal gluon propagator, are in good agreement with lattice data in the infrared.

Gauge copies and the fate of background independence in Yang-Mills theories: a leading order analysis

In this work we investigate the effects of the Gribov prescription to get rid of zero-modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator, at one-loop order in perturbation theory, in the Landau-DeWitt gauge. Quantum fluctuations are taken around a transverse background gauge field. The one-loop effective action is explicitly computed, and the behavior of the gauge and ghost fields propagators are carefully investigated. At one-loop and for generic transverse background configurations the effective action is found to be \textit{not} background invariant, as expected, due to a non-vanishing background contribution. The gauge field propagator has the same form as in the case {where the} background is a trivial field, $i.e.$ with complex conjugate poles, which are modified by the corresponding gap equation. The ghost-anti-ghost propagator still displays its enhanced $\sim p^{-4}$ behavior.

Infinitesimal Gribov copies in gauge-fixed topological Yang-Mills theories

We study the Gribov problem in four-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theories following the Baulieu-Singer approach in the (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges. This is a gauge-fixed approach that allows to recover the topological spectrum, as first constructed by Witten, by means of an equivariant (or constrained) BRST cohomology. As standard gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theories suffer from the gauge copy (Gribov) ambiguity, one might wonder if and how this has repercussions for this analysis. The resolution of the small (infinitesimal) gauge copies, in general, affects the dynamics of the underlying theory. In particular, treating the Gribov problem for the standard Landau gauge condition in non-topological Yang-Mills theories strongly affects the dynamics of the theory in the infrared. In the current paper, although the theory is investigated with the same gauge condition, the effects of the copies turn out to be completely different. In other words: in both cases, the copies are there, but the effects are very different. As suggested by the tree-level exactness of the topological model in this gauge choice, the Gribov copies are shown to be inoffensive at the quantum level. To be more precise, following Gribov, we discuss the path integral restriction to the Gribov horizon. The associated gap equation, which fixes the so-called Gribov parameter, is however shown to only possess a trivial solution, making the restriction obsolete. We relate this to the absence of radiative corrections in both gauge and ghost sectors. We give further evidence by employing the renormalization group which shows that, for this kind of topological model, the gap equation indeed forbids the introduction of a massive Gribov parameter.

More about the renormalization properties of topological Yang-Mills theories

Quantum properties of topological Yang-Mills theory in (anti-)self-dual Landau gauge were recently investigated by the authors. We extend the analysis of renormalizability for two generalized classes of gauges; each of them depending on one gauge parameter. The (anti-)self-dual Landau gauge is recovered at the vanishing of each gauge parameter. The theory shows itself to be renormalizable in these classes of gauges. Moreover, we discuss the ambiguity on the choice of the renormalization factors (which is not present in usual Yang-Mills theories) and argue a possible origin of such ambiguity.

$f(R, R_{μν}^2)$ at one loop

We compute the one-loop divergences in a theory of gravity with Lagrangian of the general form $f(R,R_{μν}R^{μν})$, on an Einstein background. We also establish that the one-loop effective action is invariant under a duality that consists of changing certain parameters in the relation between the metric and the quantum fluctuation field. Finally, we discuss the unimodular version of such a theory and establish its equivalence at one-loop order with the general case.

A first survey of the ghost-gluon vertex in the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

As the restriction of the gauge fields to the Gribov region is taken into account, it turns out that the resulting gauge field propagators display a nontrivial infrared behavior, being very close to the ones observed in lattice gauge field theory simulations. In this work, we explore for the first time a higher correlation function in the presence of the Gribov horizon: the ghost-anti-ghost-gluon interaction vertex, at one-loop level. Our analytical results (within the so-called Refined Gribov Zwanziger theory) are fairly compatible with lattice YM simulations, as well as with solutions from the Schwinger-Dyson equations. This is an indication that the RGZ framework can provide a reasonable description in the infrared not only of gauge field propagators, but also of higher correlation functions, such as interaction vertices.

The universal character of Zwanziger's horizon function in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories

In light of the recently established BRST invariant formulation of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory, we show that Zwanziger's horizon function displays a universal character. More precisely, the correlation functions of local BRST invariant operators evaluated with the Yang-Mills action supplemented with a BRST invariant version of the Zwanziger's horizon function and quantized in an arbitrary class of covariant, color invariant and renormalizable gauges which reduce to the Landau gauge when all gauge parameters are set to zero, have a unique, gauge parameters independent result, corresponding to that of the Landau gauge when the restriction to the Gribov region $Ω$ in the latter gauge is imposed. As such, thanks to the BRST invariance, the cut-off at the Gribov region $Ω$ acquires a gauge independent meaning in the class of the physical correlators.

The ghost-gluon vertex in the presence of the Gribov horizon

We consider Yang-Mills theories quantized in the Landau gauge in the presence of the Gribov horizon via the refined Gribov Zwanziger (RGZ) framework. As the restriction of the gauge path integral to the Gribov region is taken into account, the resulting gauge field propagators display a nontrivial infrared behavior, being very close to the ones observed in lattice gauge field theory simulations. In this work, we explore a higher correlation function in the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger theory: the ghost-gluon interaction vertex, at one-loop level. We show explicit compatibility with kinematical constraints, as required by the Ward identities of the theory, and obtain analytical expressions in the limit of vanishing gluon momentum. We find that the RGZ results are nontrivial in the infrared regime, being compatible with lattice YM simulations in both SU(2) and SU(3), as well as with solutions from Schwinger-Dyson equations in different truncation schemes, Functional Renormalization Group analysis, and the RG-improved Curci-Ferrari model.

Topological Yang-Mills theories in self-dual and anti-self-dual Landau gauges revisited

We reconsider the renormalizability of topological Yang-Mills field theories in (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges. By employing algebraic renormalization techniques we show that there is only one independent renormalization. Moreover, due to the rich set of Ward identities, we are able to obtain some important exact features of the (connected and one-particle irreducible) two-point functions. Specifically, we show that all two-point functions are tree-level exact.

Gauges and functional measures in quantum gravity II: Higher derivative gravity

We compute the one-loop divergences in a higher-derivative theory of gravity including Ricci tensor squared and Ricci scalar squared terms, in addition to the Hilbert and cosmological terms, on an (generally off-shell) Einstein background. We work with a two-parameter family of parametrizations of the graviton field, and a two-parameter family of gauges. We find that there are some choices of gauge or parametrization that reduce the dependence on the remaining parameters. The results are invariant under a recently discovered "duality" that involves the replacement of the densitized metric by a densitized inverse metric as the fundamental quantum variable.

Renormalizability of the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action in the linear covariant gauges

The Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework takes into account the existence of equivalent gauge field configurations in the gauge-fixing quantization procedure of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories. Recently, this setup was extended to the family of linear covariant gauges giving rise to a local and BRST-invariant action. In this paper, we give an algebraic proof of the renormalizability of the resulting action to all orders in perturbation theory.

A non-perturbative study of matter field propagators in Euclidean Yang-Mills theory in linear covariant, Curci-Ferrari and maximal Abelian gauges

In this work, we study the propagators of matter fields within the framework of the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger theory, which takes into account the effects of the Gribov copies in the gauge-fixing quantization procedure of Yang-Mills theory. In full analogy with the pure gluon sector of the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action, a non-local long-range term in the inverse of the Faddeev-Popov operator is added in the matter sector. Making use of the recent BRST invariant formulation of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework achieved in [Capri et al 2016], the propagators of scalar and quark fields in the adjoint and fundamental representations of the gauge group are worked out explicitly in the linear covariant, Curci-Ferrari and maximal Abelian gauges. Whenever lattice data are available, our results exhibit good qualitative agreement.

Equivalence between the Lovelock-Cartan action and a constrained gauge theory

We show that the four-dimensional Lovelock-Cartan action can be derived from a massless gauge theory for the $SO(1,3)$ group with an additional BRST trivial part. The model is originally composed by a topological sector and a BRST exact piece and has no explicit dependence on the metric, the vierbein or a mass parameter. The vierbein is introduced together with a mass parameter through some BRST trivial constraints. The effect of the constraints is to identify the vierbein with some of the additional fields, transforming the original action into the Lovelock-Cartan one. In this scenario, the mass parameter is identified with Newton's constant while the gauge field is identified with the spin-connection. The symmetries of the model are also explored. Moreover, the extension of the model to a quantum version is qualitatively discussed.

Non-perturbative aspects of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in linear covariant gauges: Nielsen identities and a BRST invariant two-point correlation function

In order to construct a gauge invariant two-point function in a Yang-Mills theory, we propose the use of the all-order gauge invariant transverse configurations A^h. Such configurations can be obtained through the minimization of the functional A^2_{min} along the gauge orbit within the BRST invariant formulation of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework recently put forward in [1,2] for the class of the linear covariant gauges. This correlator turns out to provide a characterization of non-perturbative aspects of the theory in a BRST invariant and gauge parameter independent way. In particular, it turns out that the poles of are the same as those of the transverse part of the gluon propagator, which are also formally shown to be independent of the gauge parameter entering the gauge condition through the Nielsen identities. The latter follow from the new exact BRST invariant formulation introduced before. Moreover, the correlator enables us to attach a BRST invariant meaning to the possible positivity violation of the corresponding temporal Schwinger correlator, giving thus for the first time a consistent, gauge parameter independent, setup to adopt the positivity violation of as a signature for gluon confinement. Finally, in the context of gauge theories supplemented with a fundamental Higgs field, we use to probe the pole structure of the massive gauge boson in a gauge invariant fashion.

Remarks on the effects of the Gribov copies on the infrared behavior of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theory

In this paper, we discuss non-perturbative infrared features of Yang-Mills theory in Euclidean space-time dimensions greater than four in the Landau gauge and within the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework, which enables us to take into account the existence of gauge copies by restricting the domain of integration in the path integral to the Gribov region. Evidences for a decoupling/massive solution for the gluon propagator in higher dimensions are provided. This behavior is strengthened the bigger the dimension is. Further, we show that, by a dimensional reduction of the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action from five to four dimensions, a non-perturbative coupling between the inverse of the Faddeev-Popov operator and the scalar field corresponding to the fifth component of the gauge field naturally arises, being in agreement with the recently proposed mechanism \cite{Capri:2014bsa} to generalize the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger construction to the matter sector.

Non-perturbative BRST quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in Curci-Ferrari gauges

In this paper we address the issue of the non-perturbative quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Curci-Ferrari gauge. In particular, we construct a Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action for this gauge which takes into account the presence of gauge copies as well as the dynamical formation of dimension two condensates. This action enjoys a non-perturbative BRST symmetry recently proposed in \cite{Capri:2015ixa}. Finally, we give attention to the gluon propagator in different space-time dimensions.

Aspects of the refined Gribov-Zwanziger action in linear covariant gauges

We prove the renormalizability to all orders of a refined Gribov-Zwanziger type action in linear covariant gauges in four-dimensional Euclidean space. In this model, the Gribov copies are taken into account by requiring that the Faddeev-Popov operator is positive definite with respect to the transverse component of the gauge field, a procedure which turns out to be analogous to the restriction to the Gribov region in the Landau gauge. The model studied here can be regarded as the first approximation of a more general nonperturbative BRST invariant formulation of the refined Gribov-Zwanziger action in linear covariant gauges obtained recently in [Phys. Rev. D 92, no. 4, 045039 (2015) and arXiv:1605.02610 [hep-th]]. A key ingredient of the set up worked out in [Phys. Rev. D 92, no. 4, 045039 (2015) and arXiv:1605.02610 [hep-th]] is the introduction of a gauge invariant field configuration $\mathbf{A}_μ$ which can be expressed as an infinite non-local series in the starting gauge field $A_μ$. In the present case, we consider the approximation in which only the first term of the series representing $\mathbf{A}_μ$ is considered, corresponding to a pure transverse gauge field. The all order renormalizability of the resulting action gives thus a strong evidence of the renormalizability of the aforementioned more general nonperturbative BRST invariant formulation of the Gribov horizon in linear covariant gauges.
