A simple approach to the quantum theory of nonlinear fiber optics

We put forth an approach to obtain a quantum master equation for the propagation of light in nonlinear fiber optics by relying on simple quantum pictures of the processes (linear and nonlinear) occurring along propagation in an optical fiber. This equation is shown to be in excellent agreement with the classical Generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation and predicts the effects of self-steepening and spontaneous Raman scattering. Last, we apply these results to the analysis of two cases of relevance in quantum technologies: single-photon frequency translation and spontaneous four-wave mixing.

A geometrical view of scalar modulation instability

We present a novel approach to the analysis of a full model of scalar modulation instability (MI) by means of a simple geometrical description in the power vs. frequency plane. This formulation allows to relate the shape of the MI gain to any arbitrary dispersion profile of the medium. As a result, we derive a straightforward explanation of the non-trivial dependence of the cutoff power on high-order dispersion and obtain explicitly the power that maximizes the gain. Our approach puts forth a powerful tool to synthesize a desired MI gain with the potential application to a vast number of parametric-amplification and supercontinuum-generation devices whose functioning relies upon modulation instability.

Stochastic resonance between dissipative structures in a bistable noise-sustained dynamics

We study an extended system that without noise shows a monostable dynamics, but when submitted to an adequate multiplicative noise, an effective bistable dynamics arise. The stochastic resonance between the attractors of the \textit{noise-sustained dynamics} is investigated theoretically in terms of a two-state approximation. The knowledge of the exact nonequilibrium potential allows us to obtain the output signal-to-noise ratio. Its maximum is predicted in the symmetric case for which both attractors have the same nonequilibrium potential value.
