Cosmological Recombination of Lithium and its Effect on the Microwave Background Anisotropies

The cosmological recombination history of lithium, produced during Big--Bang nucleosynthesis, is presented using updated chemistry and cosmological parameters consistent with recent cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements. For the popular set of cosmological parameters, about a fifth of the lithium ions recombine into neutral atoms by a redshift $z\sim 400$. The neutral lithium atoms scatter resonantly the CMB at 6708 Åand distort its intensity and polarization anisotropies at observed wavelengths around $\sim 300 μ$m, as originally suggested by Loeb (2001). The modified anistropies resulting from the lithium recombination history are calculated for a variety of cosmological models and found to result primarily in a suppression of the power spectrum amplitude. Significant modification of the power spectrum occurs for models which assume a large primordial abundance of lithium. While detection of the lithium signal might prove difficult, if offers the possibility of inferring the lithium primordial abundance and is the only probe proposed to date of the large-scale structure of the Universe for $z\sim 500-100$.

E1 transitions between states with n = 1 to 6 in helium-like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, silicon, and argon

Wavelengths and transition rates are given for E1 transitions between singlet S, P, D, and F states, between triplet S, P, and D states, and between triplet P and singlet S states in ions of astrophysical interest: helium-like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, silicon, and argon. All possible E1 transitions between states with J < 4 and n < 7 are considered. Energy levels and wave functions used in calculations of the transition rates are obtained from relativistic configuration-interaction calculations that include both Coulomb and Breit interactions.

Long-range interaction of two metastable rare-gas atoms

We present semiempirical calculations of long-range van der Waals interactions for two interacting metastable rare-gas atoms Ne through Xe. Dispersion coefficients $C_6$ are obtained for homonuclear molecular potentials asymptotically connecting to the $ns(3/2)_{2} + ns(3/2)_{2}$ atomic states. The estimated uncertainty of the calculated $C_6$ dispersion coefficients is 4%.

The dipole polarizability of the hydrogen molecular ion

A procedure is described for the precise nonrelativistic evaluation of the dipole polarizabilities of H_2^+ and D_2^+ that avoids any approximation based on the size of the electron mass relative to the nucleus mass. The procedure is constructed so that sum rules may be used to assess the accuracy of the calculation. The resulting polarizabilities are consistent with experiment within the error bars of the measurements and are far more precise than values obtained by other theoretical methods.

Rate coefficients for rovibrational transitions in H_2 due to collisions with He

We present quantum mechanical and quasiclassical trajectory calculations of cross sections for rovibrational transitions in ortho- and para-H_2 induced by collisions with He atoms. Cross sections were obtained for kinetic energies between 10^-4 and 3 eV, and the corresponding rate coefficients were calculated for the temperature range 100<T<4000 K. Comparisons are made with previous calculations.

Variational calculations on the hydrogen molecular ion

We present high-precision non-relativistic variational calculations of bound vibrational-rotational state energies for the $H_2^+$ and $D_2^+$ molecular ions in each of the lowest electronic states of $Σ_g$, $Σ_u$, and $Π_u$ symmetry. The calculations are carried out including coupling between $Σ$ and $Π$ states but without using the Born-Oppenheimer or any adiabatic approximation. Convergence studies are presented which indicate that the resulting energies for low-lying levels are accurate to about $10^{-13}$. Our procedure accounts naturally for the lambda-doubling of the $Π_u$ state.

Charge Transfer Between Neutral Atoms and Highly Ionized Species: Implications for ISO Observations

We estimate rate coefficients for charge transfer between neutral hydrogen and helium and moderate to highly ionized heavy elements. Although charge transfer does not have much influence on hot collisionally ionized plasmas, its effects on photoionized plasmas can be profound. We present several photoionization models which illustrate the significant effect of charge transfer on the far infrared lines detected by ISO.

Long-range interactions of lithium atoms

The long-range interactions of two atoms, of an atom and a dielectric wall, of an atom and a perfectly conducting wall, and of an atom between two perfectly conducting walls are calculated, including the effects of retardation, for Li using dynamic polarizabilities determined from highly correlated, variationally determined wave functions.

Variational calculations of dispersion coefficients for interactions between H, He, and Li atoms

The dispersion coefficients $C_6$, $C_8$, and $C_{10}$ for the interactions between H, He, and Li are calculated using variational wave functions in Hylleraas basis sets with multiple exponential scale factors. With these highly correlated wave functions, significant improvements are made upon previous calculations and our results provide definitive values for these coefficients.

Radiative association and inverse predissociation of oxygen atoms

The formation of $\mbox{O}_2$ by radiative association and by inverse predissociation of ground state oxygen atoms is studied using quantum-mechanical methods. Cross sections, emission spectra, and rate coefficients are presented and compared with prior experimental and theoretical results. At temperatures below 1000~K radiative association occurs by approach along the $1\,{}^3Π_u$ state of $\mbox{O}_2$ and above 1000~K inverse predissociation through the $\mbox{B}\,{}^3Σ_u^-$ state is the dominant mechanism. This conclusion is supported by a quantitative comparison between the calculations and data obtained from hot oxygen plasma spectroscopy.
