Robust singlet dimers with fragile ordering in two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of Li$_2$RuO$_3$

When an electronic system has strong correlations and a large spin-orbit interaction, it often exhibits a plethora of mutually competing quantum phases. How a particular quantum ground state is selected out of several possibilities is a very interesting question. However, equally fascinating is how such a quantum entangled state breaks up due to perturbation. This important question has relevance in very diverse fields of science from strongly correlated electron physics to quantum information. Here we report that a quantum entangled dimerized state or valence bond crystal (VBC) phase of Li2RuO3 shows nontrivial doping dependence as we perturb the Ru honeycomb lattice by replacing Ru with Li. Through extensive experimental studies, we demonstrate that the VBC phase melts into a valence bond liquid phase of the RVB (resonating valence bond) type. This system offers an interesting playground where one can test and refine our current understanding of the quantum competing phases in a single compound.

Muon spin rotation and neutron scattering study of the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal compound CeAuAl3

We have investigated the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeAuAl3 using muon spin rotation (muSR), neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. We have also revisited the magnetic, transport and thermal properties. The magnetic susceptibility reveals an antiferromagnetic transition at 1.1 K with a possibility of another magnetic transition near 0.18 K. The heat capacity shows a sharp lambda-type anomaly at 1.1 K in zero-filed, which broadens and moves to higher temperature in applied magnetic field. Our zero-field muSR and ND measurements confirm the existence of a long-range magnetic ground state below 1.2 K. Further the ND study reveals an incommensurate magnetic ordering with a magnetic propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0.52) and a spiral structure of Ce moments coupled ferromagnetically within the ab-plane. Our INS study reveals the presence of two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations at 5.1 meV and 24.6 meV in the paramagnetic phase of CeAuAl3 which can be explained on the basis of the CEF theory. Furthermore, low energy quasi-elastic excitations show a Gaussian line shape below 30 K compared to a Lorentzian line shape above 30 K, indicating a slowdown of spin fluctuation below 30 K. We have estimated a Kondo temperature of TK=3.5 K from the quasi-elastic linewidth, which is in good agreement with that estimated from the heat capacity. This study also indicates the absence of any CEF-phonon coupling unlike that observed in isostructural CeCuAl3. The CEF parameters, energy level scheme and their wave functions obtained from the analysis of INS data explain satisfactorily the single crystal susceptibility in the presence of two-ion anisotropic exchange interaction in CeAuAl3.

Thermal-history dependent magnetoelastic transition in (Mn,Fe)2(P,Si)

The thermal-history dependence of the magnetoelastic transition in (Mn,Fe)2(P,Si) compounds has been investigated using high-resolution neutron diffraction. As-prepared samples display a large difference in paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition temperature compared to cycled samples. The initial metastable state transforms into a lower-energy stable state when the as-prepared sample crosses the PM-FM transition for the first time. This additional transformation is irreversible around the transition temperature and increases the energy barrier which needs to be overcome through the PM-FM transition. Consequently the transition temperature on first cooling is found to be lower than on subsequent cycles characterizing the so-called virgin effect. High temperature annealing can restore the cycled sample to the high-temperature metastable state, which leads to the recovery of the virgin effect. A model is proposed to interpret the formation and recovery of the virgin effect.

Commensurate structural modulation in the charge- and orbitally-ordered phase of the quadruple perovskite (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$

By means of synchrotron x-ray and electron diffraction, we studied the structural changes at the charge order transition $T_{CO}$=176 K in the mixed-valence quadruple perovskite (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$. Below $T_{CO}$ we find satellite peaks indicating a commensurate structural modulation with the same propagation vector q =(1/2,0,-1/2) of the CE magnetic order that appears at low temperature, similarly to the case of simple perovskites like La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$. In the present case, the modulated structure together with the observation of a large entropy change at $T_{CO}$ gives evidence of a rare case of full Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ charge and orbital order consistent with the Goodenough-Kanamori model.

Quadrupolar Singlet Ground State of Praseodymium in a Modulated Pyrochlore

The complex structure and magnetism of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ was investigated by neutron scattering and EXAFS. Pr has an approximate doublet ground-state and the first excited state is a singlet. This overall crystal field level scheme is similar to metallic Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which is also reported here. While the B-site (Ru) is well ordered throughout, this is not the case for the A-site (Pr/Bi). A distribution of the Pr-O2 bond length indicates the Pr environment is not uniform even for $x=0$. The Bi environment is highly disordered ostensibly due to the 6s lone pairs on Bi$^{3+}$. Correspondingly we find the non-Kramers doublet ground state degeneracy otherwise anticipated for Pr in the pyrochlore structure is lifted so as to produce a quadrupolar singlet ground state with a spatially varying energy gap. For $x=0$, below T$_N$, the Ru sublattice orders antiferromagnetically, with propagation vector \textbf{k}= (0,0,0), as for Y$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$. No ordering associated with the Pr sublattice is observed down to 100 mK. The low energy magnetic response of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ features a broad spectrum of magnetic excitations associated with inhomogeneous splitting of the Pr quasi-doublet ground state. For $x=0$ ($x=0.97$) the spectrum is temperature dependent (independent). It appears disorder associated with Bi alloying enhances the inhomogeneous Pr crystal field level splitting so that inter-site interactions become irrelevant for $x=0.97$. The structural complexity for the A-site may be reflected in the hysteretic uniform magnetization of B-site ruthenium in the Néel phase.

The magnetic and structural properties near the Lifshitz point in Fe1+xTe

We construct a phase diagram of the parent compound Fe1+xTe as a function of interstitial iron x in terms of the electronic, structural, and magnetic properties. For a concentration of x < 10%, Fe1+xTe undergoes a "semimetal" to metal transition at approximately 70 K that is also first-order and coincident with a structural transition from a tetragonal to a monoclinic unit cell. For x ~ 14%, Fe1+xTe undergoes a second-order phase transition at approximately 58 K corresponding to a "semimetal" to "semimetal" transition along with a structural orthorhombic distortion. At a critical concentration of x ~ 11%, Fe1+xTe undergoes two transitions: the higher temperature one is a second-order transition to an orthorhombic phase with incommensurate magnetic ordering and temperature-dependent propagation vector, while the lower temperature one corresponds to nucleation of a monoclinic phase with a nearly commensurate magnetic wavevector. While both structural and magnetic transitions display similar critical behavior for x < 10% and near the critical concentration of x ~ 11%, samples with large interstitial iron concentrations show a marked deviation between the critical response indicating a decoupling of the order parameters. Analysis of temperature dependent inelastic neutron data reveals incommensurate magnetic fluctuations throughout the Fe1+xTe phase diagram are directly connected to the "semiconductor"-like resistivity above T_N and implicates scattering from spin fluctuations as the primary reason for the semiconducting or poor metallic properties. The results suggest that doping driven Fermi surface nesting maybe the origin of the gapless and incommensurate spin response at large interstitial concentrations.

Magnetoelastic effects in doped Fe2P

We use combine high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD) with density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the exchange striction at the Curie temperature (TC) of Fe2P and to examine the effect of boron and carbon doping on the P site. We find a significant contraction of the basal plane on heating through TC with a simultaneous increase of the c-axis that results in a small overall volume change of ~0.01%. At the magnetic transition the FeI-FeI distance drops significantly and becomes shorter than FeI-FeII . The shortest metal-metalloid (FeI-PI) distance also decreases sharply. Our DFT model reveals the importance of the latter as this structural change causes a redistribution of the FeI moment along the c-axis (Fe-P chain). We are able to understand the site preference of the dopants, the effect of which can be linked to the increased moment on the FeI-site, brought about by strong magneto-elasticity and changes in the electronic band structure.

Field-induced long-range magnetic order in the spin-singlet ground state system YbAl3C3: Neutron diffraction study

The $4f$-electron system YbAl$_3$C$_3$ with a non-magnetic spin-dimer ground state has been studied by neutron diffraction in an applied magnetic field. A long-range magnetic order involving both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components has been revealed above the critical field H$_C\sim $ 6T at temperature T=0.05K. The magnetic structure indicates that the geometrical frustration of the prototype hexagonal lattice is not fully relieved in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase. The suppression of magnetic ordering by the remanent frustration is the key factor stabilizing the non-magnetic singlet ground state in zero field. Temperature dependent measurements in the applied field H=12T revealed that the long-range ordering persists up to temperatures significantly higher than the spin gap indicating that this phase is not directly related to the singlet-triplet excitation. Combining our neutron diffraction results with the previously published phase diagram, we support the existence of an intermediate disordered phase as the first excitation from the non-magnetic singlet ground state. Based on our results, we propose YbAl$_3$C$_3$ as a new material for studying the quantum phase transitions of heavy-fermion metals under the influence of geometrical frustration.

Magnetic order and the electronic ground state in the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7

We report a combined muon spin relaxation/rotation, bulk magnetization, neutron scattering, and transport study of the electronic properties of the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. We observe the onset of strongly hysteretic behavior in the temperature dependent magnetization below 120 K, and an abrupt increase in the temperature dependent resistivity below 8 K. Zero field muon spin relaxation measurements show that the hysteretic magnetization is driven by a transition to a magnetically disordered state, and that below 8 K a complex magnetically ordered ground state sets in, as evidenced by the onset of heavily damped spontaneous muon precession. Our measurements point toward the absence of a true metal-to-insulator phase transition in this material and suggest that Nd2Ir2O7 lies either within or on the metallic side of the boundary of the Dirac semimetal regime within its topological phase diagram.

Multiferroic properties and magnetic structure of Sm1-xYxMnO3

We have successfully induced multiferroic behavior in the A-type antiferromagnet SmMnO3 by the substitution of Y at the Sm site. A magnetic transition develops at 24 K for Sm1-xYxMnO3 (x=0.4,0.5) which is not present in the parent compound. This transition coincides with the onset of electric order, with an electric polarization measured along the c axis. It is proposed that the effect of Y doping is to bring about a subtle distortion of the MnO6 octahedra, causing a magnetic ordering of the Mn3+ moments similar to that reported for the well studied multiferroic TbMnO3. Following on from our previous study on polycrystalline samples, we present measurements of the magnetic and electric properties of single crystal Sm0.6Y0.4MnO3 and Sm0.5Y0.5MnO3. The data are summarized in a phase diagram for each of the principal crystallographic axes for the x=0.5 compound. Powder neutron diffraction experiments on SmMnO3 and Sm0.6Y0.4MnO3 show that the Y substitution causes a change in the Mn-O-Mn bond angle towards the value found for TbMnO3. The magnetic structure of Sm0.6Y0.4MnO3 has been shown to consist of two phases: a sinusoidal ordering of the Mn3+ moments below 50 K and a cycloidal ordering below 27 K. The cycloidal ordering occurs at the same temperature as the previously observed ferroelectric polarization, suggesting a similar multiferroic mechanism to that found in TbMnO3.

Multiferroicity and spiral magnetism in FeVO$_4$ with quenched Fe orbital moments

FeVO$_4$ has been studied by heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, electric polarization and single crystal neutron diffraction experiments. The triclinic crystal structure is made of \emph{S}-shaped clusters of six Fe$^{3+}$ ions, linked by VO$_4^{3-}$ groups. Two long-range magnetic ordering transitions occur at T$_{N1}$=22K and T$_{N2}$=15K. Both magnetic structures are incommensurate. That stable below T$_{N1}$ is collinear with amplitude modulated moments whereas below T$_{N2}$ the arrangement is non-collinear with a helicoidal modulation. Below T$_{N2}$, \fevo becomes weakly ferroelectric coincidentally with the loss of the collinearity of the magnetic structure. We conclude that \fevo provides another example of frustrated spiral magnet similar to the classical TbMnO$_3$ compound. However, \fevo has quenched orbital moments and a particular structure clarifying the respective role of anisotropy and magnetic frustration in this type of multiferroic materials.

The nature of the magnetic order in Ca3Co2O6

We present a detailed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction study of the spin chain compound Ca3Co2O6. Below 25 K, the system orders magnetically with a modulated partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure. We give a description of the magnetic interactions in the system which is consistent with this magnetic structure. Our study also reveals that the long-range magnetic order co-exists with a shorter range order with a correlation length scale of 180 A in the ab plane. Remarkably, on cooling, the volume of material exhibiting short range order increases at the expense of the long-range order.

Electric field switching of antiferromagnetic domains in YMn2O5: a probe of the multiferroic mechanism

We employ neutron spherical polarimetry to determine the nature and population of the coexisting antiferromagnetic domains in multiferroic YMn2O5. By applying an electric field, we prove that reversing the electrical polarization results in the population inversion of two types of in-plane domains, related to each other by inversion. Our results are completely consistent with the exchange striction mechanism of ferroelectricity, and support a unified model where cycloidal ordering is induced by coupling to the main magnetic order parameter.

Structural phase transition and magnetism in hexagonal srmno

The structural and magnetic properties of the hexagonal four-layer form of SrMnO$_3$ have been investigated by combining magnetization measurements, electron diffraction and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Below 350K, there is subtle structural phase transition from hexagonal symmetry (space group $P6_3/mmc$) to orthorhombic symmetry (space group $C222_1$) where the hexagonal metric is preserved. The second-order phase transition involves a slight tilting of the corner-sharing Mn$_{2}$O$_{9}$ units composed of 2 face-sharing MnO$_6$ octahedra and the associated displacement of Sr$^{2+}$ cations. The phase transition is described in terms of symmetry-adapted displacement modes of the high symmetry phase. Upon further cooling, long range magnetic order with propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,0)$ sets in below 300K. The antiferromagnetic structure, analyzed using representation theory, shows a considerably reduced magnetic moment indicating the crucial role played by direct exchange between Mn centers of the Mn$_{2}$O$_{9}$ units.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br) studied by single crystal neutron diffraction

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction studies have been carried out on single crystals of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br). A model of the magnetic structure associated with the propagation vectors k'Cl ~ -0.150,0.422,1/2 and k'Br ~ -0.172,0.356,1/2 and stable below TN=18 K for X=Cl and TN=11 K for X=Br is proposed. A feature of the model, common to both the bromide and chloride, is a canted coplanar motif for the 4 Cu2+ spins on each tetrahedron which rotates on a helix from cell to cell following the propagation vector. The Cu2+magnetic moment determined for X=Br, 0.395(5)muB, is significantly less than for X=Cl, 0.88(1)muB at 2K. The magnetic structure of the chloride associated with the wave-vector k' differs from that determined previously for the wave vector k~0.150,0.422,1/2 [O. Zaharko et.al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 217206 (2004)].

Incommensurate magnetism in the coupled spin tetrahedra system Cu2Te2O5Cl2

Neutron scattering studies on powder and single crystals have provided new evidences for unconventional magnetism in Cu2Te2O5Cl2. The compound is built from tetrahedral clusters of S=1/2 Cu2+ spins located on a tetragonal lattice. Magnetic ordering, emerging at TN=18.2 K, leads to a very complex multi-domain, most likely degenerate, ground state, which is characterized by an incommensurate (ICM) wave vector k ~ [0.15, 0.42,1/2]. The Cu2+ ions carry a magnetic moment of 0.67(1) mB/ Cu2+ at 1.5 K and form a four helices spin arrangement with two canted pairs within the tetrahedra. A domain redistribution is observed when a magnetic field is applied in the tetragonal plane (Hc≈0.5 T), but not for H||c up to 4 T. The excitation spectrum is characterized by two well-defined modes, one completely dispersionless at 6.0 meV, the other strongly dispersing to a gap of 2 meV. The reason for such complex ground state and spin excitations may be geometrical frustration of the Cu2+ spins within the tetrahedra, intra- and inter-tetrahedral couplings having similar strengths and strong Dzyaloshinski-Moriya anisotropy. Candidates for the dominant intra- and inter-tetrahedral interactions are proposed.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in $Cu_2 Te_2 O_5 X_2$ (X=Cl,Br) studied by neutron diffraction

We present the results of the first neutron powder and single crystal diffraction studies of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems ${\CuTeX}$ (X=Cl, Br). Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vectors ${\bf{k}_{Cl}}\approx[0.150,0.422,\half]$, ${\bf{k}_{Br}}\approx[0.158,0.354,\half]$ sets in below $T_{N}$=18 K for X=Cl and 11 K for X=Br. No simple collinear antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic arrangements of moments within Cu${}^{2+}$ tetrahedra fit these observations. Fitting the diffraction data to more complex but physically reasonable models with multiple helices leads to a moment of 0.67(1)$μ_B$/Cu${}^{2+}$ at 1.5 K for the Cl-compound. The reason for such a complex ground state may be geometrical frustration of the spins due to the intra- and inter-tetrahedral couplings having similar strengths. The magnetic moment in the Br- compound, calculated assuming it has the same magnetic structure as the Cl compound, is only 0.51(5)$μ_B$/Cu${}^{2+}$ at 1.5 K. In neither compound has any evidence for a structural transition accompanying the magnetic ordering been found.

Single crystal structural study of the charge ordered phase of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3: electronic localization beyond the atomic level

In the R1/2D1/2MnO3 manganites (R: rare earth, D: divalent cation), the structural phase transition at Tco is commonly interpreted as a concomitant charge and orbital ordering (CO/OO) process driven by a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect and Coulomb repulsion forces. Full crystal structure refinement, from a neutron diffraction experiment below Tco on a Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 single crystal, gives us a model for the displacement of atoms with respect to the high temperature (HT) phase that invalidates the standard model based on the CO/OO picture. An alternative picture is that the phase transition and charge localization at Tco arise from a spatially ordered condensation of ferromagnetic Mn-Mn pairs, in which Mn atoms keeps an intermediate valence state.
