Study of CeNi4Mn by neutron diffraction

We report neutron diffraction measurements on CeNi4Mn, which has recently been identified as a soft ferromagnet (Tc ~ 140 K) with a sizeable spin-transport polarization. Our data show conclusively that the Mn atoms occupy a unique site (4c) in the unit cell, which has the symmetry of the cubic MgCu4Sn-type structure. We infer a moment of 4.6 mu_B on Mn at 17 K, which is oriented ferromagnetically along the {101} plane. The amplitude of the Mn vibrational motion is found to be larger than that of Ce and Ni atoms at all temperatures, thereby lending support to theoretical prediction of rattling phonon modes in this compound.

The Ellis wormhole with `tachyon matter'

The Ellis wormhole is known to be an exact solution of the Einstein--scalar system where the scalar field has negative kinetic energy (phantom). We show here that the same geometry (in 3+1 dimensions) can also be obtained with `tachyon matter' as a source term in the field equations and a positive cosmological constant. The kink--like tachyon field profile and the nature of the tachyon potential are analyzed. It is shown that the field configuration and the spacetime are stable against linear scalar perturbations. Finally, we comment on extensions of the 3+1 dimensional Ellis wormhole (with tachyon matter source) in diverse dimensions (d=2+1 and d>4).

Cosmology with decaying tachyon matter

We investigate the case of a homogeneous tachyon field coupled to gravity in a spatially flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime. Assuming the field evolution to be exponentially decaying with time we solve the field equations and show that, under certain conditions, the scale factor represents an accelerating universe, following a phase of decelerated expansion. We make use of a model of dark energy (with p=-ρ) and dark matter (p=0) where a single scalar field (tachyon) governs the dynamics of both the dark components. We show that this model fits the current supernova data as well as the canonical \LambdaCDM model. We give the bounds on the parameters allowed by the current data.

Relativistic particle, fluid and plasma mechanics coupled to gravity

In this introductory review article, we explore the special relativistic equations of particle motions and the consequent derivation of Einstein's famous formula $E=mc^2$. Next, we study the special relativistic electromagnetic field equations and generalizations of Lorentz equations of motion for charged particles. We then introduce the special relativistic gravitational field as a symmetric second order tensor field. Particle motions in the presence of static gravity are explored which could be used to study planetary dynamics, revealing perihelion shifts. Next, we investigate the system of consisting of pressureless plasmas and neutral perfect fluids coupled to the gravitational field. In that arena, we derive the relativistic Euler equation. Finally, we investigate the relativistic dynamics of a perfect fluid plasma and extensions to viscous flow and derive the relativistic Navier-Stokes equation.

Quantum behavior of a charged particle in an axial magnetic field

We study some aspects of the quantum theory of a charged particle moving in a time-independent, uni-directional magnetic field. When the field is uniform, we make a few clarifying remarks on the use of angular momentum eigenstates and momentum eigenstates with the diamagnetism of a free electron gas as an example. When the field is non-uniform but weakly varying, we discuss both perturbative and non-perturbative methods for studying a quantum mechanical system. As an application, we derive the quantized energy levels of a charged particle in a Helmholtz coil, which go over to the usual Landau levels in the limit of a uniform field.

Low Temperature Neutron Diffraction Study of MnTe

Investigation of transport and magnetic properties of MnTe at low temperatures sInvestigation of transport and magnetic properties of MnTe at low temperatures showed anomalies like negative coefficient of resistance below 100K and a sharp rise in susceptibility at around 83K similar to a ferromagnetic transition. Low temperature powder neutron diffraction experiments were therefore carried out to understand the underlying phenomena responsible for such anomalous behavior. Our study indicates that the rise in susceptibility at low temperatures is due to strengthening of ferromagnetic interaction within the plane over the inter plane antiferromagnetic interactions.

The gravitating perfect fluid-scalar field equations: quintessence and tachyonic

The system consisting of a self gravitating perfect fluid and scalar field is considered in detail. The scalar fields considered are the quintessence and ``tachyonic'' forms which have important application in cosmology. Mathematical properties of the general system of equations are studied including the algebraic and differential identities as well as the eigenvalue structure. The Cauchy problem for both quintessence and the tachyon is presented. We discuss the initial constraint equations which must be satisfied by the initial data. A Cauchy evolution scheme is presented in the form of a Taylor series about the Cauchy surface. Finally, a simple numerical example is provided to illustrate this scheme.

Inhomogeneous cosmologies with tachyonic dust as dark matter

A cosmology is considered driven by a stress-energy tensor consisting of a perfect fluid, an inhomogeneous pressure term (which we call a ``tachyonic dust'' for reasons which will become apparent) and a cosmological constant. The inflationary, radiation dominated and matter dominated eras are investigated in detail. In all three eras, the tachyonic pressure decreases with increasing radius of the universe and is thus minimal in the matter dominated era. The gravitational effects of the dust, however, may still strongly affect the universe at present time. In case the tachyonic pressure is positive, it enhances the overall matter {\em density} and is a candidate for dark matter. In the case where the tachyonic pressure is negative, the recent acceleration of the universe can be understood without the need for a cosmological constant. The ordinary matter, however, has positive energy density at all times. In a later section, the extension to a variable cosmological term is investigated and a specific model is put forward such that recent acceleration and future re-collapse is possible.

Laser Generated Magnetic Pulses: Hot Electron Propagation in Conducting and Dielectric Material

We report experimental evidence of electrostatic inhibition of fast electrons, generated in a highly resistive material upon irradiation with an intense ultra-short ($10^{16} W/cm^{2}$, $100 fmsec$) laser pulse. The experiment involves measurement of temporal evolution of self-generated magnetic pulses using pump-probe polarimetry. A comparison is made between the temporal behaviour of magnetic pulses generated with Aluminum and Glass targets. It is found that in contrast to Aluminium, self-generated magnetic pulse decays much faster in glass. This is attributed to the absence of return shielding currents in glass, which results in build up of electrostatic field, which in turn inhibits the movement of fast electrons. Fitting of experimental measurements using a one dimensional model, yields estimate of conductivity of Aluminium and glass, and penetration depth of hot electrons in these materials.

Supersymmetric and Deformed Harry Dym hierarchies

In this talk, we describe our recent results on the supersymmetrization of the Harry Dym hierarchy as well as a newly constructed deformed Harry Dym hierarchy which is integrable with two arbitrary parameters. In various limits of these parameters, the deformed hierarchy reduces to various known integrable systems.

General solutions of Einstein's spherically symmetric gravitational equations with junction conditions

Einstein's spherically symmetric interior gravitational equations are investigated. Following Synge's procedure, the most general solution of the equations is furnished in case $T^{1}_{1}$ and $T^{4}_{4}$ are prescribed. The existence of a total mass function, $M(r,t)$, is rigorously proved. Under suitable restrictions on the total mass function, the Schwarzschild mass $M(r,t)=m$, implicitly defines the boundary of the spherical body as $r=B(t)$. Both Synge's junction conditions as well as the continuity of the second fundamental form are examined and solved in a general manner. The weak energy conditions for an \emph{arbitrary boost} are also considered. The most general solution of the spherically symmetric anisotropic fluid model satisfying both junction conditions is furnished. In the final section, various exotic solutions are explored using the developed scheme including gravitational instantons, interior $T$-domains and $D$-dimensional generalizations.

Study of Coherent and Incoherent Plasma Emissions: Role of Plasma Wave Excitation and Breaking

Here we experimentally map the dynamics of electron plasma waves in laser solid interaction. We do time resolved measurements of second harmonic and hard X-ray generation from interaction of intense ($10^{16} W cm^{-2}$, 100 fs, 800nm) laser with a pre-plasma generated on a solid surface. The parameter space explored in this time resolved study includes variation of scale length, laser polarization and laser intensity in conjunction. These measurements done together brings novel features of strongly driven electron plasma wave behavior, which have not been explored experimentally so far. We model the results in terms of Resonance Absorption and Wave-Breaking mechanisms. The Harmonic and X-ray emission show contrasting behaviour, which indicates pitfalls in trying to increase harmonic efficiencies by brute force. However by simple adjustments, we observe that hard X-rays can be enhanced or controlled upto two orders of magnitude and second harmonic upto one order of magnitude under optimum conditions. These results should help us understand the governing mechanisms for short wavelength generation and fast particle generation to develop more efficient sources for application purposes.

The suppression of superconductivity in Mn substituted MgCNi$_{3}$

We report the effect of doping Mn in the isostructural MgCNi$_{3-x}$Mn$_{x}$ (x = 0-0.05) compounds. Magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, magneto-resistance, and specific heat studies show evidence of localized moments and Kondo effect in samples with x$\neq$0. The rapid suppression of superconductivity ($\sim$ -21K/at.% Mn) in these compounds is a consequence of pair breaking effects due to moment formation on Mn.

Conferences with Internet Web-Casting as Binding Events in a Global Brain: Example Data From Complexity Digest

There is likeness of the Internet to human brains which has led to the metaphor of the world-wide computer network as a `Global Brain'. We consider conferences as 'binding events' in the Global Brain that can lead to metacognitive structures on a global scale. One of the critical factors for that phenomenon to happen (similar to the biological brain) are the time-scales characteristic for the information exchange. In an electronic newsletter- the Complexity Digest (ComDig) we include webcasting of audio (mp3) and video (asf) files from international conferences in the weekly ComDig issues. Here we present the time variation of the weekly rate of accesses to the conference files. From those empirical data it appears that the characteristic time-scales related to access of web-casting files is of the order of a few weeks. This is at least an order of magnitude shorter than the characteristic time-scales of peer reviewed publications and conference proceedings. We predict that this observation will have profound implications on the nature of future conference proceedings, presumably in electronic form.

Higher Dimensional Wormhole Geometries with Compact Dimensions

This paper studies wormhole solutions to Einstein gravity with an arbitrary number of time dependent compact dimensions and a matter-vacuum boundary. A new gauge is utilized which is particularly suited for studies of the wormhole throat. The solutions possess arbitrary functions which allow for the description of infinitely many wormhole systems of this type and, at the stellar boundary, the matter field is smoothly joined to vacuum. It turns out that the classical vacuum structure differs considerably from the four dimensional theory and is therefore studied in detail. The presence of the vacuum-matter boundary and extra dimensions places interesting restrictions on the wormhole. For example, in the static case, the radial size of a weak energy condition (WEC) respecting throat is restricted by the extra dimensions. There is a critical dimension, D=5, where this restriction is eliminated. In the time dependent case, one \emph{cannot} respect the WEC at the throat as the time dependence actually tends the solution towards WEC violation. This differs considerably from the static case and the four dimensional case.

Transforming the World Wide Web into a Complexity-Based Semantic Network

The aim of this paper is to introduce the idea of the Semantic Web to the Complexity community and set a basic ground for a project resulting in creation of Internet-based semantic network of Complexity-related information providers. Implementation of the Semantic Web technology would be of mutual benefit to both the participants and users and will confirm self-referencing power of the community to apply the products of its own research to itself. We first explain the logic of the transition and discuss important notions associated with the Semantic Web technology. We then present a brief outline of the project milestones.

Neural Net Model for Featured Word Extraction

Search engines perform the task of retrieving information related to the user-supplied query words. This task has two parts; one is finding "featured words" which describe an article best and the other is finding a match among these words to user-defined search terms. There are two main independent approaches to achieve this task. The first one, using the concepts of semantics, has been implemented partially. For more details see another paper of Marko et al., 2002. The second approach is reported in this paper. It is a theoretical model based on using Neural Network (NN). Instead of using keywords or reading from the first few lines from papers/articles, the present model gives emphasis on extracting "featured words" from an article. Obviously we propose to exclude prepositions, articles and so on, that is, English words like "of, the, are, so, therefore, " etc. from such a list. A neural model is taken with its nodes pre-assigned energies. Whenever a match is found with featured words and userdefined search words, the node is fired and jumps to a higher energy. This firing continues until the model attains a steady energy level and total energy is now calculated. Clearly, higher match will generate higher energy; so on the basis of total energy, a ranking is done to the article indicating degree of relevance to the user's interest. Another important feature of the proposed model is incorporating a semantic module to refine the search words; like finding association among search words, etc. In this manner, information retrieval can be improved markedly.

Spherical Gravitating Systems of Arbitrary Dimension

We study spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein field equations under the assumption that the space-time may possess an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. The general solution of Synge is extended to describe systems of any dimension. Arbitrary dimension analogues of known four dimensional solutions are also presented, derived using the above scheme. Finally, we discuss the requirements for the existence of Birkhoff's theorems in space-times of arbitrary dimension with or without matter fields present. Cases are discussed where the assumptions of the theorem are considerably weakened yet the theorem still holds. We also discuss where the weakening of certain conditions may cause the theorem to fail.
