Broken ergodicity and memory in the minority game

We study the dynamics of the `batch' minority game with market-impact correction using generating functional techniques to carry out the quenched disorder average. We find that the assumption of weak long-term memory, which one usually makes in order to calculate ergodic stationary states, breaks down when the persistent autocorrelation becomes larger than c_c=0.772... We show that this condition, remarkably, coincides with the AT-line found in an earlier static calculation. This result suggests a new scenario for ergodicity breaking in disordered systems.

ESR theory for interacting 1D quantum wires

We compute the electron spin resonance (ESR) intensity for one-dimensional quantum wires in semiconductor heterostructures, taking into account electron-electron interactions and spin-orbit coupling. The ESR spectrum is shown to be very sensitive to interactions. While in the absence of interactions, the spectrum is a flat band, characteristic threshold singularities appear in the interacting limit. This suggests the practical use of ESR to reveal spin dynamics in a Luttinger liquid.

Emergence of Irrationality: Magnetization Plateaux in Modulated Hubbard Chains

Hubbard chains with periodically modulated coupling constants in a magnetic field exhibit gaps at zero temperature in their magnetic and charge excitations in a variety of situations. In addition to fully gapped situations (plateau in the magnetization curve and charge gap), we have shown [cond-mat/9908398] that plateaux also appear in the presence of massless modes, leading to a plateau with a magnetization m whose value depends continuously on the filling n. Here we detail and extend the arguments leading to such doping-dependent magnetization plateaux. First we analyze the low-lying excitations using Abelian bosonization. We compute the susceptibility and show that due to the constraint of fixed n, it vanishes at low temperatures (thus leading to a magnetization plateau) even in the presence of one massless mode. Next we study correlation functions and show that one component of the superconducting order parameter develops quasi-long-range order on a doping-dependent magnetization plateau. We then use perturbation theory in the on-site repulsion U to compute the width of these plateaux up to first order in U. Finally, we compute groundstate phase diagrams and correlation functions by Lanczos diagonalization of finite clusters, confirming the presence of doping-dependent plateaux and their special properties.

Hubbard ladders in a magnetic field

The behavior of a two leg Hubbard ladder in the presence of a magnetic field is studied by means of Abelian bosonization. We predict the appearance of a new (doping dependent) plateau in the magnetization curve of a doped 2-leg spin ladder in a wide range of couplings. We also discuss the extension to N-leg Hubbard ladders.

Random bond XXZ chains with modulated couplings

The magnetization behavior of q-periodic antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chains under uniform magnetic fields is investigated in a background of disorder exchange distributions. By means of both real space decimation procedures and numerical diagonalizations in XX chains, it is found that for binary disorder the magnetization exhibits wide plateaux at values of 1+2(p-1)/q, where p is the disorder strength. In contrast, no spin gaps are observed in the presence of continuous exchange distributions. We also study the magnetic susceptibility at low magnetic fields. For odd q-modulations the susceptibility exhibits a universal singularity, whereas for q even it displays a non-universal power law behavior depending on the parameters of the distribution.

Doping-dependent magnetization plateaux in p-merized Hubbard chains

We study zero-temperature Hubbard chains with periodically modulated hopping at arbitrary filling n and magnetization m. We show that the magnetization curves have plateaux at certain values of m which depend on the periodicity p and the filling. At commensurate filling n a charge gap opens and then magnetization plateaux correspond to fully gapped situations. However, plateaux also arise in the magnetization curves at fixed n between the commensurate values and then the plateau-value of of m depends continuously on n and can thus also become irrational. In particular for the case of dimerized hopping (p=2) and fixed doping we find that a plateau appears at m=1-n. In this case, there is still a gapless mode on the plateau leading to thermodynamic behavior which is different from a completely gapped situation.

Boundary S-matrix for the Gross-Neveu Model

We study the scattering theory for the Gross-Neveu model on the half-line. We find the reflection matrices for the elementary fermions, and by fusion we compute the ones for the two-particle bound-states, showing that they satisfy non-trivial bootstrap consistency conditions. We also compute more general reflection matrices for the Gross-Neveu model and the nonlinear sigma model, and argue that they correspond to the integrable boundary conditions we identified in our previous paper hep-th/9809178.

Quantum Integrability of Certain Boundary Conditions

We study the quantum integrability of the O(N) nonlinear $σ$ (nls) model and the O(N) Gross-Neveu (GN) model on the half-line. We show that the \nls model is integrable with Neumann, Dirichlet and a mixed boundary condition, and that the GN model is integrable if $ψ_+^a\x=\pmψ_-^a\x$. We also comment on the boundary condition found by Corrigan and Sheng for the O(3) nls model.

Tricritical Ising Model with a Boundary

We study the integrable and supersymmetric massive $\hatϕ_{(1,3)}$ deformation of the tricritical Ising model in the presence of a boundary. We use constraints from supersymmetry in order to compute the exact boundary $S$-matrices, which turn out to depend explicitly on the topological charge of the supersymmetry algebra. We also solve the general boundary Yang-Baxter equation and show that in appropriate limits the general reflection matrices go over the supersymmetry preserving solutions. Finally, we briefly discuss the possible connection between our reflection matrices and boundary perturbations within the framework of perturbed boundary conformal field theory.

Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation and extended symmetry for stable Hall states

We describe a $n$ component abelian Hall fluid as a system of {\it composite bosons} moving in an average null field given by the external magnetic field and by the statistical flux tubes located at the position of the particles. The collective vacuum state, in which the bosons condense, is characterized by a Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov differential equation relative to a $\hat {U}(1)^n$ Wess-Zumino model. In the case of states belonging to Jain's sequences the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation naturally leads to the presence of an $\hat{U}(1)\ot \hat{SU}(n)$ extended algebra. Only the $\hat{U}(1)$ mode is charged while the $\hat{SU}(n)$ modes are neutral, in agreement with recent results obtained in the study of the edge states.

Abelian Hall Fluids and Edge States: a Conformal Field Theory Approach

We show that a Coulomb gas Vertex Operator representation of 2D Conformal Field Theory gives a complete description of abelian Hall fluids: as an euclidean theory in two space dimensions leads to the construction of the ground state wave function for planar and toroidal geometry and characterizes the spectrum of low energy excitations; as a $1+1$ Minkowski theory gives the corresponding dynamics of the edge states. The difference between a generic Hall fluid and states of the Jain's sequences is emphasized and the presence, in the latter case, of of an $\hat {U}(1)\otimes \hat {SU}(n)$ extended algebra and the consequent propagation on the edges of a single charged mode and $n-1$ neutral modes is discussed.
