Numerical cubature on scattered data by adaptive interpolation

We construct cubature methods on scattered data via resampling on the support of known algebraic cubature formulas, by different kinds of adaptive interpolation (polynomial, RBF, PUM). This approach gives a promising alternative to other recent methods, such as direct meshless cubature by RBF or least-squares cubature formulas.

Anisotropic weights for RBF-PU interpolation with subdomains of variable shapes

The partition of unity (PU) method, performed with local radial basis function (RBF) approximants, has already been proved to be an effective tool for solving interpolation or collocation problems when large data sets are considered. It decomposes the original domain into several subdomains or patches so that only linear systems of relatively small size need to be solved. In research on such partition of unity methods, such subdomains usually consist of spherical patches of a fixed radius. However, for particular data sets, such as track data, ellipsoidal patches seem to be more suitable. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a scheme based on a priori error estimates for selecting the sizes of such variable ellipsoidal subdomains. We jointly solve for both these domain decomposition parameters and the anisotropic RBF shape parameters on each subdomain to achieve superior accuracy in comparison to the standard partition of unity method.

Adaptive meshless refinement schemes for RBF-PUM collocation

In this paper we present an adaptive discretization technique for solving elliptic partial differential equations via a collocation radial basis function partition of unity method. In particular, we propose a new adaptive scheme based on the construction of an error indicator and a refinement algorithm, which used together turn out to be ad-hoc strategies within this framework. The performance of the adaptive meshless refinement scheme is assessed by numerical tests.

Adaptive control of necklace states in a photonic crystal waveguide

Resonant cavities with high quality factor and small mode volume provide crucial enhancement of light-matter interactions in nanophotonic devices that transport and process classical and quantum information. The production of functional circuits containing many such cavities remains a major challenge as inevitable imperfections in the fabrication detune the cavities, which strongly affects functionality such as transmission. In photonic crystal waveguides, intrinsic disorder gives rise to high-Q localized resonances through Anderson localization, however their location and resonance frequencies are completely random, which hampers functionality. We present an adaptive holographic method to gain reversible control on these randomly localized modes by locally modifying the refractive index. We show that our method can dynamically form or break highly transmitting necklace states, which is an essential step towards photonic-crystal based quantum networks and signal processing circuits.

Measurement of the profiles of disorder-induced localized resonances in photonic crystal waveguides by local tuning

Near the band edge of photonic crystal waveguides, localized modes appear due to disorder. We demonstrate a new method to elucidate spatial profile of the localized modes in such systems using precise local tuning. Using deconvolution with the known thermal profile, the spatial profile of a localized mode with quality factor ($Q$) $>10^5$ is successfully reconstructed with a resolution of $2.5 \ μ$m.

Partition of unity interpolation using stable kernel-based techniques

In this paper we propose a new stable and accurate approximation technique which is extremely effective for interpolating large scattered data sets. The Partition of Unity (PU) method is performed considering Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) as local approximants and using locally supported weights. In particular, the approach consists in computing, for each PU subdomain, a stable basis. Such technique, taking advantage of the local scheme, leads to a significant benefit in terms of stability, especially for flat kernels. Furthermore, an optimized searching procedure is applied to build the local stable bases, thus rendering the method more efficient.

Efficient computation of partition of unity interpolants through a block-based searching technique

In this paper we propose a new efficient interpolation tool, extremely suitable for large scattered data sets. The partition of unity method is used and performed by blending Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) as local approximants and using locally supported weight functions. In particular we present a new space-partitioning data structure based on a partition of the underlying generic domain in blocks. This approach allows us to examine only a reduced number of blocks in the search process of the nearest neighbour points, leading to an optimized searching routine. Complexity analysis and numerical experiments in two- and three-dimensional interpolation support our findings. Some applications to geometric modelling are also considered. Moreover, the associated software package written in \textsc{Matlab} is here discussed and made available to the scientific community.

Computing Topology Preservation of RBF Transformations for Landmark-Based Image Registration

In image registration, a proper transformation should be topology preserving. Especially for landmark-based image registration, if the displacement of one landmark is larger enough than those of neighbourhood landmarks, topology violation will be occurred. This paper aim to analyse the topology preservation of some Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) which are used to model deformations in image registration. Matérn functions are quite common in the statistic literature (see, e.g. \cite{Matern86,Stein99}). In this paper, we use them to solve the landmark-based image registration problem. We present the topology preservation properties of RBFs in one landmark and four landmarks model respectively. Numerical results of three kinds of Matérn transformations are compared with results of Gaussian, Wendland's, and Wu's functions.

Theory of Slow Light Enhanced Four-Wave Mixing in Photonic Crystal Waveguides

The equations for Four-Wave-Mixing in a Photonic Crystal waveguide are derived accurately. The dispersive nature of slow-light enhancement, the impact of Bloch mode reshaping in the nonlinear overlap integrals and the tensor nature of the third order polarization are therefore taken into account. Numerical calculations reveal substantial differences with simpler models, which increase with decreasing group velocity. We predict that the gain for a 1.3 mm long, unoptimized GaInP waveguide will exceed 10 dB if the pump power exceeds 1 W.

Disorder-induced coherent scattering in slow-light photonic crystal waveguides

We present light transmission measurements and frequency-delay reflectometry maps for GaAs photonic crystal membranes, which show the transition from propagation with a well defined group velocity to a regime completely dominated by disorder-induced coherent scattering. Employing a self-consistent optical scattering theory, with only statistical functions to describe the structural disorder, we obtain an excellent agreement with the experiments using no fitting parameters. Our experiments and theory together provide clear physical insight into naturally occurring light localization and multiple coherent-scattering phenomena in slow-light waveguides.
