Indirect Effect of Supersymmetric Triplets in Stop Decays

We study an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with a zero hypercharge triplet, and the effect that such a particle has on stop decays. This model has the capability of predicting a 125.5 GeV Higgs even in the presence of light stops and it can modify the diphoton rate by means of the extra charged fermion triplet coupled to the Higgs. Working in the limit where the scalar triplet decouples, and with small values of mA, we find that the fermion triplet can greatly affect the branching ratios of the stops, even in the absence of a direct stop-triplet coupling. We compare the triplet extension with the MSSM and discuss how the additional fields affect the search for stop pair production.

Minimum tomography of two entangled qutrits using local measurements of one-qutrit SIC-POVM

An experimental demonstration of two-qutrit state tomography via one-qutrit symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) is presented. A two-qutrit state is encoded in the transversal paths of a spontaneous parametric down-converted photon pair. A spatial light modulator allows to implement the necessary 81 POVM elements to reconstruct the state. The quality of the reconstruction is evaluated by comparing independent measurements with the predicted results calculated with the reconstructed state. Entanglement in the system is calculated via negativity and generalized robustness from the two-qutrit reconstructed density operator.

The Least Supersymmetric Signals at the LHC

We study the implications at the LHC for the minimal (least) version of the supersymmetric standard model. In this model supersymmetry is broken by gravity and extra gauge interactions effects, providing a spectrum similar in several aspects to that in natural supersymmetric scenarios. Having the first two generations of sparticles partially decoupled means that any significant signal can only involve gauginos and the third family of sfermions. In practice, the signals are dominated by gluino production with subsequent decays into the stop sector. As we show, for gluino masses below 2300 GeV, a discovery at the LHC is possible at \sqrt{s}=14 TeV, but will require large integrated luminosities.

Characterization of fiducial states in prime dimensions via mutually unbiased bases

In this work we present some new properties of fiducial states in prime dimensions. We parameterize fiducial operators on eigenvectors bases of displacement operators, which allows us to find a manifold $Ω$ of hermitian operators satisfying $\mathrm{Tr}(ρ)=\mathrm{Tr}(ρ^2)=1$ for any $ρ$ in $Ω$. This manifold contains the complete set of fiducial pure states in every prime dimension. Indeed, any quantum state $ρ\geq0$ belonging to $Ω$ is a fiducial pure state. Also, we present an upper bound for every probability associated to mutually unbiased decomposition of fiducial states. This bound allows us to prove that every fiducial state tends to be mutually unbiased to the maximal set of mutually unbiased bases in higher prime dimensions. Finally, we show that any $ρ$ in $Ω$ minimizes an entropic uncertainty principle related to the second order Rényi entropy.

Quantum teleportation via maximum-confidence quantum measurements

We investigate the problem of teleporting unknown qudit states via pure quantum channels with nonmaximal Schmidt rank. This process is mapped to the problem of discriminating among nonorthogonal symmetric states which are linearly dependent and equally likely. It is shown that by applying an optimized maximum-confidence (MC) measurement for accomplishing this task, one reaches the maximum possible teleportation fidelity after a conclusive event in the discrimination process, which in turn occurs with the maximum success probability. In this case, such fidelity depends only on the Schmidt rank of the channel and it is larger than the optimal one achieved, deterministically, by the standard teleportation protocol. Furthermore, we show that there are quantum channels for which it is possible to apply a k-stage sequential MC measurement in the discrimination process such that a conclusive event at any stage leads to a teleportation fidelity above the aforementioned optimal one and, consequently, increases the overall success probability of teleportation with a fidelity above this limit.

Upper bounds on SUSY masses from the LHC

The LHC is already putting bounds on the Higgs mass. In this paper we use those bounds to put constrains on the MSSM parameter space coming from the fact that, in supersymmetry, the Higgs mass is a function of the masses of sparticles, and therefore an upper bound on the Higgs mass translates into an upper bound for the masses for superparners. We show that, although current bounds do not constrain yet the MSSM parameter space from above, once the Higgs mass bound improves big regions of this parameter space will be excluded, putting upper bounds on SUSY masses. On the other hand, for the case of split-SUSY we will show that, for moderate or large tanβ, the present bounds on the Higgs mass already imply that the common mass for scalars cannot be greater than 10^{11} GeV. We show how these bounds will evolve as long LHC improves the limits on the Higgs mass.

Maximum-confidence discrimination among symmetric qudit states

We study the maximum-confidence (MC) measurement strategy for discriminating among nonorthogonal symmetric qudit states. Restricting to linearly dependent and equally likely pure states, we find the optimal positive operator valued measure (POVM) that maximizes our confidence in identifying each state in the set and minimizes the probability of obtaining inconclusive results. The physical realization of this POVM is completely determined and it is shown that after an inconclusive outcome, the input states may be mapped into a new set of equiprobable symmetric states, restricted, however, to a subspace of the original qudit Hilbert space. By applying the MC measurement again onto this new set, we can still gain some information about the input states, although with less confidence than before. This leads us to introduce the concept of "sequential maximum-confidence" (SMC) measurements, where the optimized MC strategy is iterated in as many stages as allowed by the input set, until no further information can be extracted from an inconclusive result. Within each stage of this measurement our confidence in identifying the input states is the highest possible, although it decreases from one stage to the next. In addition, the more stages we accomplish within the maximum allowed, the higher will be the probability of correct identification. We will discuss an explicit example of the optimal SMC measurement applied in the discrimination among four symmetric qutrit states and propose an optical network to implement it.

Singlet deflected anomaly/gauge mediation

We study an extension of the standard anomaly/gauge mediation scenario where the messenger fields have direct interactions with an extra gauge singlet. This realizes a phenomenologically viable NMSSM-like scenario free of the mu-b_mu problem. Current cosmological constraints imply a small size for the anomaly-mediation contributions, unless some source of R-parity violation is permitted. In the latter case the allowed regions in the parameter space can be substantially larger than in the corresponding gauge-mediation scenario.

Exploring singlet deflection of gauge mediation

We embed the Next-to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model into gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking and study the phenomenology of scenarios where the gauge-mediation contributions to soft parameters are deflected by superpotential interactions of the gauge singlet with the messenger fields and the Higgs doublets. This kind of models provide a satisfactory solution to the mu-b_mu problem of gauge mediation, compatible with the adequate pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking and a realistic spectrum with supersymmetric partners at the TeV scale without requiring a significant fine tuning.

Experimental quantum tomography of photonic qudits via mutually unbiased basis

We present the experimental quantum tomography of 7- and 8-dimensional quantum systems based on projective measurements in the mutually unbiased basis (MUB-QT). One of the advantages of MUB-QT is that it requires projections from a minimal number of bases to be performed. In our scheme, the higher dimensional quantum systems are encoded using the propagation modes of single photons, and we take advantage of the capabilities of amplitude- and phase-modulation of programmable spatial light modulators to implement the MUB-QT.

Interference and complementarity for two-photon hybrid entangled states

In this work we generate two-photon hybrid entangled states (HES), where the polarization of one photon is entangled with the transverse spatial degree of freedom of the second photon. The photon pair is created by parametric down-conversion in a polarization-entangled state. A birefringent double-slit couples the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of these photons and finally, suitable spatial and polarization projections generate the HES. We investigate some interesting aspects of the two-photon hybrid interference, and present this study in the context of the complementarity relation that exists between the visibilities of the one- and two-photon interference patterns.

Decoherence in a double-slit quantum eraser

We study and experimentally implement a double-slit quantum eraser in the presence of a controlled decoherence mechanism. A two-photon state, produced in a spontaneous parametric down conversion process, is prepared in a maximally entangled polarization state. A birefringent double-slit is illuminated by one of the down-converted photons, and it acts as a single-photon two-qubits controlled not gate that couples the polarization with the transversal momentum of these photons. The other photon, that acts as a which-path marker, is sent through a Mach-Zehnder-like interferometer. When the interferometer is partially unbalanced, it behaves as a controlled source of decoherence for polarization states of down-converted photons. We show the transition from wave-like to particle-like behavior of the signal photons crossing the double-slit as a function of the decoherence parameter, which depends on the length path difference at the interferometer.

Data Provenance: Use Cases for the ESO archive, and Interactions with the Virtual Observatory

In the Virtual Observatory era, where we intend to expose scientists (or software agents on their behalf) to a stream of observations from all existing facilities, the ability to access and to further interpret the origin, relationships, and processing steps on archived astronomical assets (their Provenance) is a requirement for proper observation selection, and quality assessment. In this article we present the different use cases Data Provenance is needed for, the challenges inherent to building such a system for the ESO archive, and their link with ongoing work in the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA).

Quantum tomography via equidistant states

We study the possibility of performing quantum state tomography via equidistant states. This class of states allows us to propose a non-symmetric informationally complete POVM based tomographic scheme. The scheme is defined for odd dimensions and involves an inversion which can be analytically carried out by Fourier transform.

Conclusive inner product modification

The task of changing the overlap between two quantum states can not be performed by making use of a unitary evolution only. However, by means of a unitary-reduction process it can be probabilistically modified. Here we study in detail the problem of mapping two known pure states onto other two states in such a way that the final inner product between the outcome states is different from the inner product of the initial states. In this way we design an optimal non-orthogonal quantum state preparation scheme by starting from an orthonormal basis. In this scheme the absolute value of the inner product can be reduced only probabilistically whereas it can be increased deterministically. Our analysis shows that the phases of the involved inner products play an important role in the increase of the success probability of the desired process.

Controlling the transverse correlation in QPM parametric down-conversion

In this work we study the transverse spatial correlation of the pair of photons generated via the process of spontaneous parametric frequency down-conversion, in periodically poled non-linear crystals illuminated by a pulsed laser beam. It is well known that the two-photon state generated in quasi-phase matching (QPM) configurations depends explicitly on the characteristics of the pump beam, on the crystal modulated non-linearity, and on the detection geometry. This has allowed the development of several techniques for controlling the biphoton spectral and spatial properties. Here we discuss another technique for implementing the spatial entanglement modification in QPM gratings. We show, theoretically and experimentally, that in nearly collinear geometries, the spatial shape modulation of the pump beam allows for the control of the biphoton transverse spatial correlation.

SUSY without the Little Hierarchy

We propose a simple gauge extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), where the fine tuning in the Higgs mass parameters is highly reduced. The Higgs boson is insensitive to high energies because of supersymmetry and also because it is a pseudo-Goldstone boson of a global symmetry (referred to as double protection or super-little Higgs mechanism). A large shift in the Higgs quartic self coupling is obtained via a non-decoupling D-term coming from an extra gauge group, resulting in a Higgs that can be as heavy as 135 GeV with a tuning milder than 10%. With an appropriate choice of quantum numbers one can achieve that the additional quartic is generated without a corresponding shift in the Higgs mass, thus preserving the double protection of the Higgs. The model predicts the existence of several top-partner fermions one of which can be as light as 700 GeV, while the ordinary MSSM states could be as light as 400 GeV. In addition to many new particles in the multi-TeV range there would also be an axion-like state very weakly coupled to standard model (SM) matter which could be in the sub-GeV regime, and sterile neutrinos which could be light.

Unambiguous modification of nonorthogonal single and two photon polarization states

In this work we propose a probabilistic method which allows an unambiguous modification of two non-orthogonal quantum states. We experimentally implement this protocol by using two-photon polarization states generated in the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion. In the experiment, for codifying initial quantum states, we consider single photon states and heralded detection. We show that the application of this protocol to entangled states, it allows a fine control of the amount of entanglement of the initial state.
