Electroweak corrections to Higgs-strahlung off W/Z bosons at the Tevatron and the LHC with HAWK

The associate production of Higgs bosons with W or Z bosons, known as Higgs-strahlung, is an important search channel for Higgs bosons at the hadron colliders Tevatron and LHC for low Higgs-boson masses. We refine a previous calculation of next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections (and recalculate the QCD corrections) upon including the leptonic decay of the W/Z bosons, thereby keeping the fully differential information of the 2-lepton + Higgs final state. The gauge invariance of the W/Z-resonance treatment is ensured by the use of the complex-mass scheme. The electroweak corrections, which are at the level of -(5-10)% for total cross sections, further increase in size with increasing transverse momenta p_T in differential cross sections. For instance, for p_T,H >~ 200GeV, which is the interesting range at the LHC, the electroweak corrections to WH production reach about -14% for M_H = 120GeV. The described corrections are implemented in the HAWK Monte Carlo program, which was initially designed for the vector-boson-fusion channel, and are discussed for various distributions in the production channels pp / p \bar p -> H + l nu_l / l^-l^+ / nu_l \bar nu_l + X.

Standard Model Higgs-Boson Branching Ratios with Uncertainties

We present an update of the branching ratios for Higgs-boson decays in the Standard Model. We list results for all relevant branching ratios together with corresponding uncertainties resulting from input parameters and missing higher-order corrections. As sources of parametric uncertainties we include the masses of the charm, bottom, and top quarks as well as the QCD coupling constant. We compare our results with other predictions in the literature.

Electroweak corrections to charged-current e+e- --> 4 fermion processes - technical details and further results

The complete electroweak O(alpha) corrections have been calculated for the charged-current four-fermion production processes e+e- --> nu_tau tau+ mu- anti-nu_mu, u anti-d mu- anti-nu_mu, and u anti-d s anti-c. Here, technical details of this calculation are presented. These include the algebraic reduction of spinor chains to a few standard structures and the consistent implementation of the finite width of the W boson. To this end, a generalization of the complex-mass scheme to the one-loop level is proposed, and the practical application of this method is described. Finally, the effects of the complete O(alpha) corrections to various differential cross sections of physical interest are discussed and compared to predictions based on the double-pole approximation, revealing that the latter approximation is not sufficient to fully exploit the potential of a future linear collider in an analysis of W-boson pairs at high energies.

Complete electroweak O(alpha) corrections to charged-current e+e- --> 4fermion processes

The complete electroweak O(alpha) corrections are calculated for the charged-current four-fermion production processes e+e- --> nu_tau tau+ mu- anti-nu_mu, u anti-d mu- anti-nu_mu, and u anti-d s anti-c. The calculation is performed using complex gauge-boson masses, supplemented by complex couplings to restore gauge invariance. The evaluation of the occurring one-loop tensor integrals, which include 5- and 6-point functions, requires new techniques. Explicit numerical results are presented for total cross sections in the energy range from the W-pair-production threshold region up to a scattering energy of 2TeV. A comparison with the predictions based on the "double-pole approximation" (DPA) provided by the generator RacoonWW reveals corrections beyond DPA of < 0.5% in the energy range 170-300GeV, in agreement with previous estimates for the intrinsic DPA uncertainty. The difference to the DPA increases to 1-2% for sqrt{s} = 1-2TeV. At threshold, where the DPA becomes unreliable, the full O(alpha) calculation corrects an improved Born approximation (IBA) by about 1.6%, also consistent with an error estimate of the IBA.

NLO QCD corrections to WWbb production at hadron colliders

Top-antitop quark pairs belong to the most abundantly produced and precisely measurable heavy-particle signatures at hadron colliders and allow for crucial tests of the Standard Model and new-physics searches. Here we report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to hadronic WWbb production, which provides a complete NLO description of the production of top-antitop pairs and their subsequent decay into W bosons and bottom quarks, including interferences, off-shell effects, and non-resonant backgrounds. Numerical predictions for the Tevatron and the LHC are presented.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables

This Report summarizes the results of the first 10 months' activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Sections Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the status-of-art on Higgs Physics at the LHC integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The Report is more than a mere collection of the proceedings of the general meetings. The subgroups have been working in different directions. An attempt has been made to present the first Report from these subgroups in a complete and homogeneous form. The subgroups' contributions correspondingly comprise the main parts of the Report. A significant amount of work has been performed in providing higher-order corrections to the Higgs-boson cross sections and pinning down the theoretical uncertainty of the Standard Model predictions. This Report comprises explicit numerical results on total cross sections, leaving the issues of event selection cuts and differential distributions to future publications. The subjects for further study are identified.

Z+jet production at the LHC: Electroweak radiative corrections

The investigation of weak bosons $V$ ($V=\mathrm{W}^{\pm}$, $\mathrm{Z}$) produced with or without associated hard QCD jets will be of great phenomenological interest at the LHC. Owing to the large cross sections and the clean decay signatures of the vector bosons, weak-boson production can be used to monitor and calibrate the luminosity of the collider, to constrain the PDFs, or to calibrate the detector. Moreover, the $Z$+jet(s) final state constitutes an important background to a large variety of signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model. To match the excellent experimental accuracy that is expected at the LHC, we have worked out a theoretical next-to-leading-order analysis of $V$+jet production at hadron colliders. The focus of this talk will be on new results on the full electroweak corrections to $Z(\to l^-l^+)$+jet production at the LHC. All off-shell effects are included in our approach, and the finite lifetime of the $Z$ boson is consistently accounted for using the complex-mass scheme. In the following, we briefly introduce the calculation and discuss selected phenomenological implications of our results.

Scalar one-loop 4-point integrals

We provide a complete set of results for the scalar 4-point function appearing in one-loop calculations in QCD, QED, the electroweak Standard Model and popular extensions thereof. Complex internal masses, which are needed for calculations involving unstable particles, are supported throughout, whereas complex momenta are not supported. In particular, for the most general, regular case we present two independent results in terms of 72 and 32 dilogarithms. In addition we list explicit results for all soft- and/or collinear-singular cases in dimensional regularization, mass regularization, and in regularizations of mixed type. The exceptional case with a vanishing modified Cayley determinant, which hardly appears in applications, is not considered.

A proposal for a standard interface between Monte Carlo tools and one-loop programs

Many highly developed Monte Carlo tools for the evaluation of cross sections based on tree matrix elements exist and are used by experimental collaborations in high energy physics. As the evaluation of one-loop matrix elements has recently been undergoing enormous progress, the combination of one-loop matrix elements with existing Monte Carlo tools is on the horizon. This would lead to phenomenological predictions at the next-to-leading order level. This note summarises the discussion of the next-to-leading order multi-leg (NLM) working group on this issue which has been taking place during the workshop on Physics at TeV colliders at Les Houches, France, in June 2009. The result is a proposal for a standard interface between Monte Carlo tools and one-loop matrix element programs.

NLO QCD corrections to pp -> t anti-t b anti-b + X at the LHC

We report on the calculation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top anti-top bottom anti-bottom (ttbb) final states at the LHC, which deliver a serious background contribution to the production of a Higgs boson (decaying into a bottom anti-bottom pair) in association with a top anti-top pair. While the corrections significantly reduce the unphysical scale dependence of the leading-order cross section, our results predict an enhancement of the ttbb production cross section by a K-factor of about 1.8.

Two-loop electroweak Sudakov logarithms for massive fermion scattering

We study the asymptotic behaviour of two-loop electroweak corrections at energies Q >> M_W, where logarithms of the type ln(Q/M_W) become dominant. The calculation of the leading and next-to-leading logarithmic terms for massless and massive fermion-scattering processes is summarized. The derivations are performed diagrammatically within the spontaneously broken electroweak theory. We find that the soft and collinear singularities resulting from photons can be factorized into a QED-like term and that, up to logarithms of the Z-W mass ratio, the effects of symmetry breaking cancel. This result supports resummation prescriptions that are based on a symmetric SU(2)xU(1) theory matched with QED at the electroweak scale.

Precision calculations for H -> WW/ZZ -> 4fermions with PROPHECY4f

PROPHECY4f is a Monte Carlo event generator for precise simulations of the Higgs-boson decay H -> WW/ZZ -> 4fermions, supporting leptonic, semileptonic, and four-quark final states. Both electroweak and QCD corrections are included. Treating the intermediate gauge bosons as resonances, the calculation covers the full Higgs-boson mass range above, near, and below the gauge-boson pair thresholds. In this article we pay particular attention to the recently implemented option of PROPHECY4f to generate unweighted events.

Strong and electroweak corrections to the production of Higgs+2jets via weak interactions at the LHC

Radiative corrections of strong and electroweak interactions are presented at next-to-leading order for the production of a Higgs boson plus two hard jets via weak interactions at the LHC. The calculation includes all weak-boson fusion and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams as well as the corresponding interferences. The electroweak corrections, which are discussed here for the first time, reduce the cross sections by 5%, and thus are of the same order of magnitude as the QCD corrections. As argued in previous papers, where s-channel diagrams and interferences were neglected, the QCD corrections connected to interference effects are small.

Logarithmic electroweak corrections to e+ e- -> nue anti-nue W+ W-

We consider W-boson scattering at high-energy e+ e- colliders and study one-loop logarithmic electroweak corrections within the Standard Model assuming a light Higgs boson. We present explicit analytical results for W+ W- -> W+ W-. Using the equivalent vector-boson approximation, we have implemented these corrections into a Monte Carlo program for the process e+ e- -> nue anti-nue W+ W-. The quality of the equivalent vector-boson approximation and of the logarithmic high-energy approximation for the electroweak corrections is discussed in detail. The impact of the radiative effects is quantitatively analysed. The corrections are negative and their size, typically of the order of 10%, increases with energy reaching up to -20% and -50% at the ILC and CLIC, respectively.

Radiative corrections to the semileptonic and hadronic Higgs-boson decays H -> W W/Z Z -> 4 fermions

The radiative corrections of the strong and electroweak interactions are calculated for the Higgs-boson decays H -> WW/ZZ -> 4f with semileptonic or hadronic four-fermion final states in next-to-leading order. This calculation is improved by higher-order corrections originating from heavy-Higgs-boson effects and photonic final-state radiation off charged leptons. The W- and Z-boson resonances are treated within the complex-mass scheme, i.e. without any resonance expansion or on-shell approximation. The calculation essentially follows our previous study of purely leptonic final states. The electroweak corrections are similar for all four-fermion final states; for integrated quantities they amount to some per cent and increase with growing Higgs-boson mass M_H, reaching 7-8% at M_H \sim 500 GeV. For distributions, the corrections are somewhat larger and, in general, distort the shapes. Among the QCD corrections, which include corrections to interference contributions of the Born diagrams, only the corrections to the squared Born diagrams turn out to be relevant. These contributions can be attributed to the gauge-boson decays, i.e. they approximately amount to α_s/πfor semileptonic final states and 2α_s/πfor hadronic final states. The discussed corrections have been implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator PROPHECY4F.
