Lithography-free Fabrication of High Quality Substrate-supported and Freestanding Graphene devices

We present a lithography-free technique for fabrication of clean, high quality graphene devices. This technique is based on evaporation through hard Si shadow masks, and eliminates contaminants introduced by lithographical processes. We demonstrate that devices fabricated by this technique have significantly higher mobility values than those by standard electron beam lithography. To obtain ultra-high mobility devices, we extend this technique to fabricate suspended graphene samples with mobility as high as 120,000 cm^2/Vs.

Spatial mapping of the Dirac point in monolayer and bilayer graphene

We have mapped the Dirac point in exfoliated monolayer and bilayer graphene using spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements at low temperature. The Dirac point shifts in energy at different locations in graphene. However, a cross correlation with the topography shows no correlation indicating that topographic features such as ripples are not the primary source of the variation. Rather, we attribute the shift of the Dirac point to random charged impurities located near the graphene. Our findings emphasize the need to advance exfoliated graphene sample preparation to minimize the effect of impurities.

Mapping the Dirac point in gated bilayer graphene

We have performed low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on exfoliated bilayer graphene on SiO2. By varying the back gate voltage we observed a linear shift of the Dirac point and an opening of a band gap due to the perpendicular electric field. In addition to observing a shift in the Dirac point, we also measured its spatial dependence using spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The spatial variation of the Dirac point was not correlated with topographic features and therefore we attribute its shift to random charged impurities.

Spatially resolved spectroscopy of monolayer graphene on SiO2

We have carried out scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on exfoliated monolayer graphene on SiO$_2$ to probe the correlation between its electronic and structural properties. Maps of the local density of states are characterized by electron and hole puddles that arise due to long range intravalley scattering from intrinsic ripples in graphene and random charged impurities. At low energy, we observe short range intervalley scattering which we attribute to lattice defects. Our results demonstrate that the electronic properties of graphene are influenced by intrinsic ripples, defects and the underlying SiO$_2$ substrate.

Pulsar glitch substructure and pulsar interiors

Pulsar timing at the Mt Pleasant observatory focused on Vela, which could be tracked for 18 hours of the day. These nearly continuous timing records extend over 24 years allowing a great insight into details of timing noise, micro glitches and other more exotic effects. It has been found that the spin up for the Vela pulsar occurs instantaneously to within the uncertainties of the data. The potential for new, higher resolution data, to unveil insights of the Neutron Star interiors is discussed.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Very Forward and Very Backward Neutral Particle Production for Polarized Proton Collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

In the 2001-2002 running period of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), transversely polarized protons were accelerated to 100 GeV for the first time, with collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. We present results from this run for single transverse spin asymmetries for inclusive production of neutral pions, photons and neutrons of the energy region 20 - 100 GeV for forward and backward production for angles between 0.3 mrad and 2.2 mrad with respect to the polarized proton direction. An asymmetry of A_N = (-0.090 +- 0.006 +- 0.009) x (1.0^{+0.47}_{-0.24}) was observed for forward neutron production, where the errors are statistical and systematic, and the scale error is from the beam polarization uncertainty. The forward photon and pi^0, and backward neutron, photon, and pi^0 asymmetries were consistent with zero. The large neutron asymmetry indicates a strong interference between a spin-flip amplitude, such as one pion exchange which dominates lower energy neutron production, and remaining spin non-flip amplitudes such as Reggeon exchange.

Atom-by-atom extraction using scanning tunneling microscope tip-cluster interaction

We investigate atomistic details of a single atom extraction process realized by using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip-cluster interaction on a Ag(111) surface at 6 K. Single atoms are extracted from a silver cluster one atom at a time using small tunneling biases less than 35 mV and a threshold tunneling resistance of 47 kOhm. A combination of total energy calculations and molecular dynamics simulations shows a lowering of the atom extraction barrier upon approaching the tip to the cluster. Thus, a mere tuning of the proximity between the tip and the cluster governs the extraction process and is sufficient to extract an atom. The atomically precise control and reproducibility of the process are demonstrated by repeatedly extracting single atoms from a silver cluster on an atom-by-atom basis.

eRHIC Detector Design Studies - Implications and Constraints on the ep (A) Interaction-Region Design

An electron-proton/ion collider facility (eRHIC) is under consideration at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Such a new facility will require the design and construction of a new optimized detector profiting from the world's first ep collider facility HERA at DESY. The detailed design is closely coupled to the design of the interaction region and thus to the machine development work in general. Implications and constraints on the ep(A) interaction-region design will be discussed.

Measurement of Analyzing Power for Proton-Carbon Elastic Scattering in the Coulomb-Nuclear Interference Region with a 22-GeV/c Polarized Proton Beam

The analyzing power for proton-carbon elastic scattering in the coulomb-nuclear interference region of momentum transfer, $9.0\times10^{-3}<-t<4.1\times10^{-2}$ (GeV/$c)^{2}$, was measured with a 21.7 GeV/$c$ polarized proton beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ratio of hadronic spin-flip to non-flip amplitude, $r_5$, was obtained from the analyzing power to be $\text{Re} r_5=0.088\pm 0.058$ and $\text{Im} r_5=-0.161\pm 0.226$.

The Physics Case for Polarized Protons at HERA

Several important and unique measurements, within the standard model and of possible physics beyond it, could be made with {\em polarized HERA} in which both the proton and the electron beams are polarized. With a $\sim$820 GeV proton beam and a $\sim$27.6 GeV electron beam, the polarized HERA will enable $\vec{e}-\vec{p}$ collisions with $\sqrt{s} \sim 300$ GeV and access spin variables in the kinematic range, $10^{-5} \le x_{\rm Bj} \le 0.6$ and $0 \le Q^{2} \le 10^{5}$, using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at DESY. This will be an increase of two orders of magnitude in both $x$ and $Q^{2}$ range compared to the presently explored range from fixed target experiments at CERN, SLAC and DESY. No other approved or planned spin experiment or accelerator facility will access the low $x$ and high $Q^{2}$ regions possible with HERA. Measurements performed with the polarized HERA collider will include the polarized structure function $g_{1}(x,Q^{2})$ at very low $x$, the polarized gluon distribution $ΔG(x,Q^{2})$ from pQCD analysis of $g_{1}$, and from the production of di-jet events and high-p$_{T}$ hadrons in photon gluon fusion process and in photoproduction, the weak structure functions, the valence quark distribution functions from semi-inclusive asymmetries, parton distributions inside polarized photon, and information on helicity structure of possible new physics beyond the standard model. With such a rich and broad physics program possible for HERA,not polarizing the proton beam would be a great opportunity lost.

A Study of the Polarized Structure Function g_1^p(x,Q^2) and the Polarized Gluon Distribution Delta g(x,Q^2) at HERA

We present estimates of possible data on spin-dependent asymmetries in inclusive scattering of high energy polarized electrons by high energy polarized protons at HERA with their statistical errors and discuss systematic errors. We show that these data will provide important information on the low-x behavior of the polarized structure function g_1, and will reduce the uncertainty in the determination of the first moment of the polarized gluon distribution Delta g(x,Q^2) obtained from the QCD analysis of g_1 in NLO. Furthermore, using asymmetries for di-jet events from a polarized HERA would substantially reduce the uncertainty in the shape of Delta g(x,Q^2). Using the information on Delta g(x,Q^2) from the di-jet analysis in conjunction with the NLO QCD analysis of g_1 will provide an accurate determination of Delta g(x,Q^2) and its first moment.
