Precise measurement of the $\gamma$-decay probability of the Hoyle state with a new triple coincidence-detection method

We measured the $\gamma$-decay probability of the Hoyle state with a new method of triple coincidence detection of a scattered $\alpha$ particle, a recoil $\rm ^{12}C$ nucleus, and a $\gamma$ ray in inelastic alpha scattering on $\rm ^{12}C$. This method successfully enabled a low-background measurement and a precise determination of the $\gamma$-decay probability of the Hoyle state as $\Gamma_\mathrm{\gamma}/\Gamma=[4.00 \pm 0.22 \mathrm{(sta.)} \pm 0.18 \mathrm{(sys.)}]\times10^{-4}$, which is consistent with the previous literature value. Therefore, we concluded that the literature value can be reliably used in the study of nucleosynthesis in the universe.

ELIGANT-TN -- ELI Gamma Above Neutron Threshold: The Thermal Neutron setup

Here we present the thermal neutron counter from the ELI Gamma Above Neutron Threshold setup at the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics. We describe the mechanical design of the setup, the properties of the ${}^{3}$He gas counters, and the hardware data-acquisition electronics and software digital signal processing. The performance of the complete detector array is demonstrated via Geant4 and MCNP simulations, and measurements with typical neutron sources. The analysis procedure for experimental measurements are outlined with a in-beam test experiment with an $\alpha$ beam to measure the ${}^{13}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\mathrm{n}_{0}){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ cross-section branching ratios.

Competition between the neutron-proton pair break-ups delineating the level structure of 202Po

High-spin spectroscopic study of $^{202}$Po ($Z$ = 84, $N$ = 118) has been carried out using the $^{195}$Pt($^{12}$C, 5n)$^{202}$Po fusion-evaporation reaction. An extended level scheme has been proposed up to an excitation energy of $E_x\approx$ 8 MeV and angular momentum of 27$\hbar$, with the addition of 57 newly observed $\gamma$-ray transitions, along with the revisions in the placement of 8 already known transitions and the multipolarities of 4 of these transitions. The energy of the unobserved 8$^+ \rightarrow 6^+$ transition has been proposed to be 9.0(5) keV, which resolves the uncertainty in the excitation energy of the levels above the 6$^{+}$ state. Three new sequences of $M1$ transitions have also been identified in the high excitation energy regime and included in the proposed level scheme. The large-scale shell model calculations for $Z>82$ and $N<126$ valence space have been carried out using PBPOP interaction which explained the overall level scheme for both the positive and negative parity states. The calculations successfully reproduced the purity of the proton $\pi h_{9/2}$ dominated $8^+$ isomeric state, and also explained the missing $E2$ decay of the ${12}^+$ isomeric state in terms of changing nucleonic configurations.

Nuclear level density of ${}^{128}$Te from $(\mathrm{p},\mathrm{p}'\gamma)$ scattering and complementary photonuclear data

We have extracted the nuclear level density of ${}^{128}$Te from a $(\mathrm{p},\mathrm{p} '\gamma)$ scattering experiment using the large-volume \labr\ and \cebr\ detectors from ELI-NP at the 9~MV Tandem facilities at IFIN-HH. The decay data were normalised using photonuclear data, resulting in nuclear level densities without intrinsic model dependencies from the constant temperature or Fermi gas models. The deduced nuclear level density follows in between the expectations from these two models, but we observe a clear divergence from a microscopic model based on the Skyrme force.

Statistical properties and photon strength functions of the ${}^{112,114}$Sn isotopes below the neutron separation threshold

Here, we report on the measurements of the $\gamma$-ray strength functions and nuclear level densities of ${}^{112,114}$Sn performed for the first time at the 9~MV Tandem accelerator facilities at IFIN-HH using the Oslo method. We extract thermodynamic properties and gross and fine properties of the pygmy dipole resonance for systematic comparison in the chain of Sn isotopes. The results are compared with microscopic models implemented in the TALYS reaction code and the fully microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model for the underlying nuclear structure of the dipole strength in ${}^{112,114}$Sn. The quasiparticle-phonon model results show the importance of complex configurations to the low-energy dipole response in the pygmy dipole resonance energy region. The experimental data are further included in the cross-section and reaction rate calculations for the $(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ reaction of the $p$-process nuclei ${}^{112,114}$Sn showing a significant increase in reaction rates at high temperatures compared to existing nuclear databases.

Fission fragment mass distribution in $^{210}$Po and $^{213}$At

Background: The influence of shell effect on the dynamics of the fusion fission process and it's evolution with excitation energy in the pre-actinide Hg-Pb region in general is a matter of intense research in recent years. In particular, a strong ambiguity remains for the neutron shell closed $^{210}$Po nucleus regarding the role of shell effect in fission around $\approx$ 30 - 40 MeV of excitation energy. Purpose: We have measured the fission fragment mass distribution of $^{210}$Po populated using fusion of $^{4}$He + $^{206}$Pb at different excitation energies and compare the result with recent theoretical predictions as well as with our previous measurement for the same nucleus populated through a different entrance channel. Mass distribution in the fission of the neighbouring nuclei $^{213}$At is also studied for comparison. Methods: Two large area Multi-wire Proportional Counters (MWPC) were used for complete kinematical measurement of the coincident fission fragments. The time of flight differences of the coincident fission fragments were used to directly extract the fission fragment mass distributions. Results: The measured fragment mass distribution for the reactions $^{4}$He + $^{206}$Pb and $^{4}$He + $^{209}$Bi were symmetric and the width of the mass distributions were found to increase monotonically with excitation energy above 36.7 MeV and 32.9 MeV, respectively, indicating the absence of shell effects at the saddle. However, in the fission of $^{210}$Po, we find minor deviation from symmetric mass distributions at the lowest excitation energy (30.8 MeV). Conclusion: Persistence of shell effect in fission fragment mass distribution of $^{210}$Po was observed at the excitation energy $\approx$ 31 MeV as predicted by the theory; at higher excitation energy, however, the present study reaffirms the absence of any shell correction in the fission of $^{210}$Po.

High Spin Spectroscopy and Shape Evolution in 105Cd

High spin states in 105Cd were studied using 16O beam on 92Mo reaction at an incident beam energy of 75 MeV. The level scheme of 105Cd has been observed up to an excitation energy of 10.8 MeV with the addition of 30 new gamma transitions to the previous work. Spin and parity for most of the reported levels are assigned from the DCO ratios and linear polarization measurements. The microscopic origin of the investigated band structures is discussed in the context of triaxial projected shell model. The energies of observed positive and negative parity bands agree with the predictions of the TPSM by considering triaxial deformation for the observed excited band structures. The shape evolution with increasing angular momentum is explained in the framework of Cranked Shell Model and the Total Routhian Surface calculations.

Simulations of beta-decay of 6He in an Electrostatic Ion Trap

Trapped radioactive atoms present exciting opportunities for the study of fundamental interactions and symmetries. For example, detecting beta decay in a trap can probe the minute experimental signal that originates from possible tensor or scalar terms in the weak interaction. Such scalar or tensor terms affect, e.g., the angular correlation between a neutrino and an electron in the beta-decay process, thus probing new physics of beyond-the-standard-model nature. The present system focuses on a novel use of an innovative ion trapping device, the Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap. Such a trap has not been previously considered for Fundamental Interaction studies and exhibits potentially very significant advantages over other schemes. These advantages include improved injection efficiency of the radionuclide under study, an extended field-free region, ion-beam kinematics for better efficiency and ease-of operation and the potential for a much larger solid angle for the electron and recoiling atom counters. The beta-decay of trapped 6He is discussed and preliminary Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation and error-analysis considerations are presented.

Linear Polarization Measurements for High-Spin States in 146Gd

A {\gamma}-ray linear polarization measurement has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 146Gd nucleus. High-spin states in this nucleus were populated in a reaction 115In + 34S at 140 MeV incident energy. Linearly polarized {\gamma} - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the {\pi}(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to J{\pi} = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.
