Some model-independent phenomenological consequences of flexible brane worlds

In this work we will review the main properties of brane-world models with low tension. Starting from very general principles, it is possible to obtain an effective action for the relevant degrees of freedom at low energies (branons). Using the cross sections for high-energy processes involving branons, we set bounds on the different parameters appearing in these models. We also show that branons provide a WIMP candidate for dark matter in a natural way. We consider cosmological constraints on its thermal and non-thermal relic abundances. We derive direct detection limits and compare those limits with the preferred parameter region in the case in which the EGRET excess in the diffuse galactic gamma rays is due to dark matter annihilation. Finally we will discuss the constraints coming from the precision tests of the Standard Model and the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

A f(R) gravity without cosmological constant

In this work we consider the possibility of describing the current evolution of the universe, without the introduction of any cosmological constant or dark energy (DE), by modifying the Einstein-Hilbert (EH) action. In the context of the f(R) gravities within the metric formalism, we show that it is possible to find an action without cosmological constant which exactly reproduces the behavior of the EH action with cosmological constant. In addition the f(R) action is analytical at the origin having Minkowski and Schwarzschild as vacuum solutions. The found f(R) action is highly non-trivial and must be written in terms of hypergeometric functions but, in spite of looking somewhat artificial, it shows that the cosmological constant, or more generally the DE, is not a logical necessity.

Branon Phenomenology

In brane-world models with low tension, the fluctuations of the brane along the extra dimensions (branons) are the only relevant new low-energy modes. Such branon fields are in general massive, stable and weakly interacting, and accordingly they are natural candidates to explain the universe missing mass problem. On the other hand, the branon phenomenology is very rich because they couple to all the Standard Model particles. Distinctive branon signals could be observed in next colliders and in dark matter searches.

Branon radiative corrections to collider physics and precision observables

In the context of brane-world scenarios, we study the effects produced by the exchange of virtual massive branons. A one-loop calculation is performed which generates higher-dimensional operators involving SM fields suppressed by powers of the brane tension scale. We discuss constraints on this scenario from colliders such as HERA, LEP and Tevatron and prospects for future detections at LHC or ILC. The most interesting phenomenology comes from new four-particles vertices induced by branon radiative corrections, mainly from four fermion interactions. The presence of flexible branes modifies also the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the electroweak precision observables.

Dark matter clues in the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We study the possibility to explain the non-baryonic dark matter abundance and improve the present fits on the muon anomalous magnetic moment through the same new physics. The only viable way to solve simultaneously both problems which is known to date is by using supersymmetric theories. However in this work we show that massive brane fluctuations (branons) in large extra-dimensions models can provide a more economical alternative to supersymmetry. This is so because the low-energy branon physics depends effectively on only three parameters. Next collider experiments, such as LHC or ILC, will be sensitive to branon phenomenology in the natural parameter region where the theory is able to account for the two effects.

Dark matter from extra dimensions

In brane-world models with low tension, massive branons are natural candidates for dark matter. The phenomenology of these WIMP-like particles is completely determined by their mass, the brane tension and, in the case of effects due to radiative corrections, by the cutoff setting the scale of validity of the branon effective theory. In this paper, we review the main constraints on branon physics coming from colliders, astrophysics and cosmological observations, and include more recent limits obtained from electroweak precision measurements.

A new dark matter candidate in low-tension brane-worlds

Brane world theories contain additional degrees of freedom related to the geometry of the extra dimension space which can be understood as brane oscillations (branons). In the case where the fundamental gravitational scale is much larger than the brane tension scale, these branons are the only extra degrees of freedom at low energies coming from the extra dimensions. Branons are generically stable, weakly interacting and massive. They could be produced in the next generation colliders and at the same time they are natural WIMP like candidates for dark matter.

Branon search in hadronic colliders

In the context of the brane-world scenarios with compactified extra dimensions, we study the production of brane fluctuations (branons) in hadron colliders ($p \bar p$, $pp$ and $e^\pm p$) in terms of the brane tension parameter $f$, the branon mass $M$ and the number of branons $N$. From the absence of monojets events at HERA and Tevatron (run I), we set bounds on these parameters and we also study how such bounds could be improved at Tevatron (run II) and the future LHC. The single photon channel is also analyzed for the two last colliders.

Branon dark matter

In the brane-world scenario, our universe is understood as a three dimensional hypersurface embedded in a higher dimensional space-time. The fluctuations of the brane along the extra dimensions are seen from the four-dimensional point of view as new fields whose properties are determined by the geometry of the extra space. We show that such branon fields can be massive, stable and weakly interacting, and accordinlgy they are natural candidates to explain the universe missing mass problem. We also consider the possibility of producing branons non-thermally and their relevance in the cosmic coincidence problem. Finally we show that some of the branon distinctive signals could be detected in future colliders and in direct or indirect dark matter searches.

Dark Geometry

Extra-dimensional theories contain additional degrees of freedom related to the geometry of the extra space which can be interpreted as new particles. Such theories allow to reformulate most of the fundamental problems of physics from a completely different point of view. In this essay we concentrate on the brane fluctuations which are present in brane-worlds, and how such oscillations of the own space-time geometry along curved extra dimensions can help to resolve the Universe missing mass problem. The energy scales involved in these models are low compared to the Planck scale, and this means that some of the brane fluctuations distinctive signals could be detected in future colliders and in direct or indirect dark matter searches.

Branons as dark matter

In the brane-world scenario with low tension, brane fluctuations (branons) together with the Standard Model particles are the only relevant degrees of freedom at low energies. Branons are stable, weakly interacting, massive particles and their relic abundance can account for the dark matter of the universe. In a certain range of the parameter space, they could be detectable by future direct search experiments.

Cosmological and astrophysical limits on brane fluctuations

We consider a general brane-world model parametrized by the brane tension scale $f$ and the branon mass $M$. For low tension compared to the fundamental gravitational scale, we calculate the relic branon abundance and its contribution to the cosmological dark matter. We compare this result with the current observational limits on the total and hot dark matter energy densities and derive the corresponding bounds on $f$ and $M$. Using the nucleosynthesis bounds on the number of relativistic species, we also set a limit on the number of light branons in terms of the brane tension. Finally, we estimate the bounds coming from the energy loss rate in supernovae explosions due to massive branon emission.

Brane-world dark matter

We show that, in the context of brane-world scenarios with low tension $τ=f^4$, massive brane fluctuations are natural dark matter candidates. We calculate the present abundances for both hot(warm) and cold branons in terms of the branon mass $M$ and the tension scale $f$. The results are compared with the current experimental bounds on these parameters. We also study the prospects for their detection in direct search experiments and comment on their characteristic signals in the indirect ones.

Limits on the brane fluctuations mass and on the brane tension scale from electron-positron colliders

In the context of the brane-world scenarios with compactified large extra dimensions, we study the production of the possible massive brane oscillations (branons) in electron-positron colliders. We compute their contribution to the electroweak gauge bosons decay width and to the single-photon and single-Z processes. With LEP-I results and assuming non observation at LEP-II, we present exclusion plots for the brane tension $τ= f^4$ and the branon mass $M$. Prospects for the next generation of electron-positron colliders are also considered.

Phenomenological implications of brane world scenarios with low tension

The recent proposal of theories with compactified large extra dimensions is reviewed. We pay especial attention to brane world models with low tension where the only relevant degrees of freedom at low energies are the Standard Model (SM) particles and the branons, which are transversal brane oscillations. By using an effective Lagrangian, we study some phenomenological consequences of these scenarios in a model independent way.

Rho and Sigma Mesons in Unitarized Thermal ChPT

We present our recent results for the rho and sigma mesons considered as resonances in pion-pion scattering in a thermal bath. We use chiral perturbation theory to fourth order in p for the low energy behaviour, then extend the analysis via the unitarization method of the Inverse Amplitude into the resonance region. The width of the rho broadens about twice the amount required by phase space considerations alone, its mass staying practically constant up to temperatures of order 150 MeV. The sigma meson behaves in accordance to chiral symmetry restoration expectations.
