Integrable lattices and their sublattices II. From the B-quadrilateral lattice to the self-adjoint schemes on the triangular and the honeycomb lattices

An integrable self-adjoint 7-point scheme on the triangular lattice and an integrable self-adjoint scheme on the honeycomb lattice are studied using the sublattice approach. The star-triangle relation between these systems is introduced, and the Darboux transformations for both linear problems from the Moutard transformation of the B-(Moutard) quadrilateral lattice are obtained. A geometric interpretation of the Laplace transformations of the self-adjoint 7-point scheme is given and the corresponding novel integrable discrete 3D system is constructed.

Integrable lattices and their sub-lattices: from the discrete Moutard (discrete Cauchy-Riemann) 4-point equation to the self-adjoint 5-point scheme

We introduce the sub-lattice approach, a procedure to generate, from a given integrable lattice, a sub-lattice which inherits its integrability features. We consider, as illustrative example of this approach, the discrete Moutard 4-point equation and its sub-lattice, the self-adjoint 5-point scheme on the star of the square lattice, which are relevant in the theory of the integrable Discrete Geometries and in the theory of discrete holomorphic and harmonic functions (in this last context, the discrete Moutard equation is called discrete Cauchy-Riemann equation). We use the sub-lattice point of view to derive, from the Darboux transformations and superposition formulas of the discrete Moutard equation, the Darboux transformations and superposition formulas of the self-adjoint 5-point scheme. We also construct, from algebro-geometric solutions of the discrete Moutard equation, algebro-geometric solutions of the self-adjoint 5-point scheme. We finally use these solutions to construct explicit examples of discrete holomorphic and harmonic functions, as well as examples of quadrilateral surfaces in $\RR^3$.

An integrable generalization of the Toda law to the square lattice

We generalize the Toda lattice (or Toda chain) equation to the square lattice; i.e., we construct an integrable nonlinear equation, for a scalar field taking values on the square lattice and depending on a continuous (time) variable, characterized by an exponential law of interaction in both discrete directions of the square lattice. We construct the Darboux-Backlund transformations for such lattice, and the corresponding formulas describing their superposition. We finally use these Darboux-Backlund transformations to generate examples of explicit solutions of exponential and rational type. The exponential solutions describe the evolution of one and two smooth two-dimensional shock waves on the square lattice.

Geometric discretization of the Bianchi system

We introduce the dual Koenigs lattices, which are the integrable discrete analogues of conjugate nets with equal tangential invariants, and we find the corresponding reduction of the fundamental transformation. We also introduce the notion of discrete normal congruences. Finally, considering quadrilateral lattices "with equal tangential invariants" which allow for harmonic normal congruences we obtain, in complete analogy with the continuous case, the integrable discrete analogue of the Bianchi system together with its geometric meaning. To obtain this geometric meaning we also make use of the novel characterization of the circular lattice as a quadrilateral lattice whose coordinate lines intersect orthogonally in the mean.

Darboux transformations for 5-point and 7-point self-adjoint schemes and an integrable discretization of the 2D Schrodinger operator

With this paper we begin an investigation of difference schemes that possess Darboux transformations and can be regarded as natural discretizations of elliptic partial differential equations. We construct, in particular, the Darboux transformations for the general self adjoint schemes with five and seven neighbouring points. We also introduce a distinguished discretization of the two-dimensional stationary Schrodinger equation, described by a 5-point difference scheme involving two potentials, which admits a Darboux transformation.

The discrete KP and KdV equations over finite fields

We propose the algebro-geometric mothod of construction of solutions of the discrete KP equation over a finite field. We also perform the corresponding reduction to the finite field version of the discrete KdV equation. We write down formulas which allow to construct multisoliton solutions of the equations starting from vacuum wave functions on arbitrary non-singular curve.

Asymptotic lattices and their integrable reductions I: the Bianchi and the Fubini-Ragazzi lattices

We review recent results on asymptotic lattices and their integrable reductions. We present the theory of general asymptotic lattices in R^3 together with the corresponding theory of their Darboux-type transformations. Then we study the discrete analogues of the Bianchi surfaces and their transformations. Finally, we present the corresponding theory of the discrete analogues of the isothermally-asymptotic (Fubuni-Ragazzi) nets.

The integrable discretization of the Bianchi-Ernst system

We present the constraint for the discrete Moutard equation which gives the integrable discretization of the Bianchi-Ernst system. We also derive the discrete analogue of the Bianchi transformation between solutions of such a system (the Darboux-Backlund transformation in soliton terminology). We finally obtain the superposition of discrete Bianchi transformations.

Transformations of Quadrilateral Lattices

Motivated by the classical studies on transformations of conjugate nets, we develop the general geometric theory of transformations of their discrete analogues: the multidimensional quadrilateral lattices, i.e. lattices x: Z^N -> R^M, whose elementary quadrilaterals are planar. Our investigation is based on the discrete analogue of the theory of the rectilinear congruences, which we also present in detail. We study, in particular, the discrete analogues of the Laplace, Combescure, Levy, radial and fundamental transformations and their interrelations. The composition of these transformations and their permutability is also investigated from a geometric point of view. The deep connections between "transformations" and "discretizations" is also investigated for quadrilateral lattices. We finally interpret these results within the D-bar formalism.

Multidimensional Quadrilateral Lattices are Integrable

The notion of multidimensional quadrilateral lattice is introduced. It is shown that such a lattice is characterized by a system of integrable discrete nonlinear equations. Different useful formulations of the system are given. The geometric construction of the lattice is also discussed and, in particular, it is clarified the number of initial--boundary data which define the lattice uniquely.

Geometric Discretisation of the Toda System

The Laplace sequence of the discrete conjugate nets is constructed. The invariants of the nets satisfy, in full analogy to the continuous case, the system of difference equations equivalent to the discrete version of the generalized Toda equation.
