Accessing transversity via J/Psi production in polarized p-pbar interactions

We discuss the possibility of a direct access to transversity distributions by measuring the double transverse spin asymmetry A_TT in p pbar --> J/Psi + X --> l^- l^+ + X processes at future GSI-HESR experiments with polarized protons and anti-protons. In the J/Psi resonance production region, with 30 < s < 45 GeV^2, both the cross-section and A_TT are expected to be sufficiently large to allow a measurement of h_1^q(x,M^2); numerical estimates are given.

Effects of color superconductivity on the structure and formation of compact stars

We show that if color superconducting quark matter forms in hybrid or quark stars it is possible to satisfy most of recent observational boundaries on masses and radii of compact stellar objects. An energy of the order of $10^{53}$ erg is released in the conversion from a (metastable) hadronic star into a (stable) hybrid or quark star in presence of a color superconducting phase. If the conversion occurs immediately after the deleptonization of the proto-neutron star, the released energy can help Supernovae to explode. If the conversion is delayed the energy released can power a Gamma Ray Burst. A delay between the Supernova and the subsequent Gamma Ray Burst is possible, in agreement with the delay proposed in recent analysis of astrophysical data.

Following Weyl on Quantum Mechanics: the contribution of Ettore Majorana

After a quick historical account of the introduction of the group-theoretical description of Quantum Mechanics in terms of symmetries, as proposed by Weyl, we examine some unpublished papers by Ettore Majorana. Remarkable results achieved by him in frontier research topics as well as in physics teaching point out that the Italian physicist can be well considered as a follower of Weyl in his reformulation of Quantum Mechanics.

Nonextensive statistical effects on the relativistic nuclear equation of state

Following the basic prescriptions of the Tsallis' nonextensive thermodynamics, we study the relativistic nonextensive thermodynamics and the equation of state for a perfect gas at the equilibrium. The obtained results are used to study the relativistic nuclear equation of state in the hadronic and in the quark-gluon plasma phase. We show that small deviations from the standard extensive statistics imply remarkable effects into the shape of the equation of state.

Flavor Asymmetry of the Polarized Light Sea: Models vs. Data

The flavor asymmetry of the polarized light sea, $Δ\bar u - Δ\bar d$, discriminates between different model calculations of helicity densities. We show that the chiral chromodielectric model, differently from models based on a $1/N_c$ expansion, predicts a small value for this asymmetry, what seems in agreement with preliminary HERMES data.

Color Superconductivity in Compact Stars and Gamma Ray Bursts

We study the effects of color superconductivity on the structure and formation of compact stars. We show that it is possible to satisfy most of recent observational boundaries on masses and radii if a diquark condensate forms in a hybrid or a quark star. Moreover, we find that a huge amount of energy, of the order of $10^{53}$ erg, can be released in the conversion from a (metastable) hadronic star into a (stable) hybrid or quark star, if the presence of a color superconducting phase is taken into account. Accordingly to the scenario proposed in Astrophys.J.586(2003)1250, the energy released in this conversion can power a Gamma Ray Burst. This mechanism can explain the recent observations indicating a delay, of the order of days or years, between a few Supernova explosions and the subsequent Gamma Ray Burst.

Gamma Ray Bursts from delayed collapse of neutron stars to quark matter stars

We propose a model to explain how a Gamma Rays Burst can take place days or years after a supernova explosion. Our model is based on the conversion of a pure hadronic star (neutron star) into a star made at least in part of deconfined quark matter. The conversion process can be delayed if the surface tension at the interface between hadronic and deconfined-quark-matter phases is taken into account. The nucleation time (i.e. the time to form a critical-size drop of quark matter) can be extremely long if the mass of the star is small. Via mass accretion the nucleation time can be dramaticaly reduced and the star is finally converted into the stable configuration. A huge amount of energy, of the order of 10$^{52}$--10$^{53}$ erg, is released during the conversion process and can produce a powerful Gamma Ray Burst. The delay between the supernova explosion generating the metastable neutron star and the new collapse can explain the delay proposed in GRB990705 and in GRB011211.

Dynamics of Phase Transitions in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

We present several possibilities offered by the reaction dynamics of dissipative heavy ion collisions to study in detail the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state, $EOS$. In particular we discuss isospin effects on the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, {\it Isospin Distillation}, and on collective flows. We stress the importance of a microscopic relativistic structure of the effective interaction in the isovector channel. The possibility of an {\it early} transition to deconfined matter in high isospin density regions is also suggested. We finally select {\it Eleven} observables, in different beam energy regions, that appear rather sensitive to the isovector part of the nuclear $EOS$, in particular in more exclusive experiments.

Isospin dependence of the critical quark-deconfinement densities

We explore the dependence of the critical density, separating hadronic matter from a mixed phase of quarks and hadrons, on the ratio $Z/A$. We use both the MIT bag model and the Color Dielectric Model to describe the quark dynamics, while for the hadronic phase we employ various relativistic equations of state. We find that, if the parameters of quark models are fixed so that the existence of quark stars is allowed, then the critical density drops dramatically in the range $Z/A \sim $ 0.3--0.4. Moreover, for $Z/A \sim $ 0.3 the critical density is only slightly larger than the saturation density of symmetric nuclear-matter. This opens the possibility to verify the Witten-Bodmer hypothesis on absolute stability of quark matter using ground-based experiments in which neutron-rich nuclei are tested.

Non-Standard Time Reversal and Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries

A system of quarks interacting with chiral fields is shown to provide a physical realization of a "non-standard" time reversal for particle multiplets which mixes the multiplet components. We argue that, if the internal structure of the nucleon is governed by a chiral dynamics, the so-called T-odd quark distribution functions are not forbidden by time-reversal invariance and hence might be non vanishing. This agrees with some other recent results. From a phenomenological point of view, this would give rise to single-spin asymmetries in inclusive processes involving a transversely polarized nucleon: in particular, in pion lepto- and hadro-production and in Drell-Yan processes.

Fast Electronics for the Dafne Transverse Feedback Systems

Transverse feedback systems for controlling the vertical coupled-bunch instabilities in the positron and electron main rings are installed at DAFNE. They started to be operative respectively from June and September 2000. For the horizontal plane, similar systems have been installed in summer 2001 with less kicker power. Design specifications and the basic system concepts are presented. Real time bunch-by-bunch offset correction is implemented using digital signal processors and dual-port RAM's. Fast analog to digital sampling is performed at the maximum bunch frequency (368 MHz). The system manages at full speed a continuous flow of 8-bits data and it has the capability to invert the sign or put to zero the output for any combination of bunches. A conversion from digital to analog produces the output correcting signal.

Non-Standard Time Reversal for Particle Multiplets and the Spin-Flavor Structure of Hadrons

We show that a system of quarks interacting with chiral fields provides a physical representation of a ``non-standard'' time reversal for particle multiplets proposed by Weinberg. As an application, we argue that, if the internal structure of hadrons is described by a chiral lagrangian, the so-called time-reversal-odd quark distribution functions might not be forbidden by time-reversal invariance.

Stability of strange quark matter: MIT bag versus Color Dielectric Model

We discuss the properties of strange matter, in particular the minimum of the energy per baryon number as a function of the strangeness fraction. We utilize both the MIT bag model and the Color Dielectric Model and compare the energy per baryon with the masses of hyperons having the corresponding strangeness fraction, which are coherently calculated within both models. We also take into account the perturbative exchange of gluons. The results obtained in the two approaches allow to discuss the stability of strangelets. While the MIT bag model and the double minimum version of the Color Dielectric Model allow the existence of strangelets, the single minimum version of the Color Dielectric Model excludes this possibility.

Gluon Spin in a Quark Model

We compute the gluon polarization $ΔG$ and the gluon total angular momentum $J_g$ in the Isgur-Karl quark model. Taking into account self-interaction contributions, we obtain for both quantities a positive value of about 0.24 at the model scale $μ_0^2 \simeq 0.25$ GeV$^2$. This estimate is reasonably close to the expectation from polarized deep inelastic scattering analyses.

Double-Spin Transverse Asymmetries in Drell-Yan Processes

We calculate the double-spin transverse asymmetries for the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in p-p and p-anti p collisions. We assume the transverse and the longitudinal polarization densities to be equal at a very small scale, as it is suggested by confinement model results. Using a global fit for the longitudinal distributions, we find transverse asymmetries of order of 10^-2 at most, in the accessible kinematic regions.
