Effects of composite pions on the chiral condensate within the PNJL model at finite temperature

We investigate the effect of composite pions on the behaviour of the chiral condensate at finite temperature within the Polyakov-loop improved NJL model. To this end we treat quark-antiquark correlations in the pion channel (bound states and scattering continuum) within a Beth-Uhlenbeck approach that uses medium-dependent phase shifts. A striking medium effect is the Mott transition which occurs when the binding energy vanishes and the discrete pion bound state merges the continuum. This transition is triggered by the lowering of the continuum edge due to the chiral restoration transition. This in turn also entails a modification of the Polyakov-loop so that the SU(3) center symmetry gets broken at finite temperature and dynamical quarks (and gluons) appear in the system, taking over the role of the dominant degrees of freedom from the pions. At low temperatures our model reproduces the chiral perturbation theory result for the chiral condensate while at high temperatures the PNJL model result is recovered. The new aspect of the current work is a consistent treatment of the chiral restoration transition region within the Beth-Uhlenbeck approach on the basis of mesonic phase shifts for the treatment of the correlations.

Mott-hadron resonance gas and lattice QCD thermodynamics

A unified equation of state for quark-hadron matter is presented in the generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck form. It follows from a $Φ-$derivable approach to the thermodynamic potential where the ansatz for the $Φ$ functional contains all 2PI diagrams at two-loop order formed with quark cluster Green's functions for quark, diquark, meson and baryon propagators. We present numerical results using an effective model for the generic behaviour of hadron masses and phase shifts at finite temperature which shares basic features with recent developments within the PNJL model for correlations in quark matter. We obtain the transition between a hadron resonance gas phase and the quark gluon plasma where the Mott dissociation of hadrons is encoded in the hadronic phase shifts. The resulting thermodynamics is in very good agreement with recent lattice QCD simulations.

Mott dissociation of pions and kaons in hot, dense quark matter

We describe the Mott dissociation of pions and kaons within a Beth-Uhlenbeck approach based on the PNJL model, which allows for a unified description of bound, resonant and scattering states. Within this model we evaluate the temperature and chemical potential dependent modification of the phase shifts both in the pseudoscalar and scalar isovector meson channels for $N_f=2+1$ quark flavors. We show that the character change of the pseudoscalar bound states to resonances in the continuum at the Mott transition temperature is signaled by a jump of the phase shift at the threshold from $π$ to zero, in accordance with the Levinson theorem. In particular, we demonstrate the importance of accounting for the scattering continuum states, which ensures that the total phase shift in each of the meson channels vanishes at high energies, thus eliminating mesonic correlations from the thermodynamics at high temperatures. In this way, we prove that the present approach provides a unified description of the transition from a meson gas to a quark-gluon plasma. We discuss the occurrence of an anomalous mode for mesons composed of quarks with unequal masses which is particularly pronounced for $K^+$ and $κ^+$ states at finite densities a a possible mechanism to explain the "horn" effect for the $K^+/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions.

Pion and kaon in the Beth-Uhlenbeck approach

In the present work the Mott effect for pions and kaons is described within a Beth- Uhlenbeck approach on the basis of the PNJL model. The contribution of these degrees of freedom to the thermodynamics is encoded in the temperature dependence of their phase shifts. A comparison with results from $N_f = 2 + 1$ lattice QCD thermodynamics is performed.

Polyakov-loop suppression of colored states in a quark-meson-diquark plasma

A quark-meson-diquark plasma is considered within the PNJL model for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in quark matter. Based on a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach to mesons and diquarks we present the thermodynamics of this system including the Mott dissociation of mesons and diquarks at finite temperature. A striking result is the suppression of the diquark abundance below the chiral restoration temperature by the coupling to the Polyakov loop, because of their color degree of freedom. This is understood in close analogy to the suppression of quark distributions by the same mechanism. Mesons as color singlets are unaffected by the Polyakov-loop suppression. At temperatures above the chiral restoration mesons and diquarks are both suppressed due to the Mott effect, whereby the positive resonance contribution to the pressure is largely compensated by the negative scattering contribution in accordance with the Levinson theorem.

Mott-hadron resonance gas and lattice QCD thermodynamics

We present an effective model for the generic behaviour of hadron masses and phase shifts at finite temperature which shares basic features with recent developments within the PNJL model for correlations in quark matter. On this basis we obtain the transition between a hadron resonance gas phase and the quark gluon plasma in the spirit of the generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach where the Mott dissociation of hadrons is encoded in the hadronic phase shifts. Here we restrict ourselves to low-lying hadronic channels and perform a discussion of recent lattice QCD thermodynamics results from this perspective. We find agreement in the asymptotic regions while for the description of the transition itself the inclusion of further hadronic channels as well as a selfconsistent determination of the continuum thresholds is required.

NJL model approach to diquarks and baryons in quark matter

We describe baryons as quark-diquark bound states at finite temperature and density within the NJL model for chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in quark matter. Based on a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach to mesons and diquarks we present in a first step the thermodynamics of quark-diquark matter which includes the Mott dissociation of diquarks at finite temperature. In a second step we solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the baryon as a quark-diquark bound state in quark-diquark matter. We obtain a stable, bound baryon even beyond the Mott temperature for diquark dissociation since the phase space occupation effect (Pauli blocking for quarks and Bose enhancement for diquarks) in the Bethe-Salpeter kernel for the nucleon approximately cancel so that the nucleon mass follows the in-medium behaviour of the quark and diquark masses towards chiral restoration. In this situation the baryon is obtained as a "borromean" three-quark state in medium because the two-particle state (diquark) is unbound while the three-particle state (baryon) is bound.

Mott-Anderson freeze-out and the strange matter "horn"

We discuss the $\sqrt{s}$-dependence of the $K^+/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions (the "horn" effect) within a Mott-Anderson localization model for chemical freeze-out. The different response of pion and kaon radii to the hot and dense hadronic medium results in different freeze-out conditions. We demonstrate within a simple model that this circumstance enhances the "horn" effect relative to statistical models with universal chemical freeze-out.

Generalized Beth--Uhlenbeck approach to mesons and diquarks in hot, dense quark matter

An important first step in the program of hadronization of chiral quark models is the bosonization in meson and diquark channels. This procedure is presented at finite temperatures and chemical potentials for the SU(2) flavor case of the NJL model with special emphasis on the mixing between scalar meson and scalar diquark modes which occurs in the 2SC color superconducting phase. The thermodynamic potential is obtained in the gaussian approximation for the meson and diquark fields and it is given the Beth-Uhlenbeck form. This allows a detailed discussion of bound state dissociation in hot, dense matter (Mott effect) in terms of the in-medium scattering phase shift of two-particle correlations. It is shown for the case without meson-diquark mixing that the phase shift can be separated into a continuum and a resonance part. In the latter, the Mott transition manifests itself by a change of the phase shift at threshold by π in accordance with Levinson's theorem, when a bound state transforms to a resonance in the scattering continuum. The consequences for the contribution of pionic correlations to the pressure are discussed by evaluating the Beth-Uhlenbeck equation of state in different approximations. A similar discussion is performed for the scalar diquark channel in the normal phase. Further developments and applications of the developed approach are outlined.

Pion and sigma meson dissociation in a modified NJL model at finite temperature

We investigate pion and sigma meson correlations in hot quark matter within a modified NJL model. Special emphasis is on the transformation of mesonic bound states to resonances (Mott dissociation) when due to the partial chiral symmetry restoration with increasing temperature the threshold of quark-antiquark continuum states drops below the meson mass at the corresponding Mott temperature. The description is based on evaluating the polarization functions for quark-antiquark (meson) correlations as a function of the temperature and the results can be represented by introducing modulus and phase of the complex propagator functions for the mesonic states. We study the effect of modelling confinement by introducing a low-momentum cutoff in loop integrals. We make the ansatz that this cutoff is identified with the dynamically generated quark mass gap and find an increase of the continuum threshold which makes the otherwise unbound sigma meson a bound state in the vacuum. We discuss the in-medium behavior of the mesonic phase shifts including the Mott effect and find accordance with the Levinson theorem.
