Hydrodynamics Near a Chiral Critical Point

We introduce a model for the real-time evolution of a relativistic fluid of quarks coupled to non-equilibrium dynamics of the long wavelength (classical) modes of the chiral condensate. We solve the equations of motion numerically in 3+1 space-time dimensions. Starting the evolution at high temperature in the symmetric phase, we study dynamical trajectories that either cross the line of first-order phase transitions or evolve through its critical endpoint. For those cases, we predict the behavior of the azimuthal momentum asymmetry for high-energy heavy-ion collisions at nonzero impact parameter.

High-multiplicity pA collisions and the small-x effective action

I discuss the p_t distributions for high-multiplicity events originating from semi-classical variation of the gluon density of the proton. The multiplicity distribution measures the curvature of the effective action for the small-x gluon fields. For pA collisions at the RHIC and LHC colliders, semi-classically the multiplicity distribution reflects the distribution of saturation momenta of the proton but not that of the nucleus. The average transverse momentum in the central region grows with dN/dy, while the p_t distribution of leading hadrons in the proton fragmentation region should depend less on the multiplicity in the central region.

The deconfined phase near Tc and its decay into hadrons

We sketch an effective theory for the deconfined state of QCD near Tc. This relates the behavior of the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, and its two-point functions, to the pressure. Defining the ``mass'' of three and two gluon states from the imaginary and real parts of the Polyakov loop, while this ratio is 3:2 in perturbation theory, at Tc it is 3:1. We also discuss the decay of the deconfined state into hadrons.

The K/pi ratio from condensed Polyakov loops

We perform a field-theoretical computation of hadron production in large systems at the QCD confinement phase transition associated with restoration of the Z(3) global symmetry. This occurs from the decay of a condensate for the Polyakov loop. From the effective potential for the Polyakov loop, its mass just below the confinement temperature T_c is in between the vacuum masses of the pion and that of the kaon. Therefore, due to phase-space restrictions the number of produced kaons is roughly an order of magnitude smaller than that of produced pions, in agreement with recent results from collisions of gold ions at the BNL-RHIC. From its mass, we estimate that the Polyakov loop condensate is characterized by a (spatial) correlation scale of 1/m_\ell ~ 1/2 fm. For systems of deconfined matter of about that size, the free energy may not be dominated by a condensate for the Polyakov loop, and so the process of hadronization may be qualitatively different as compared to large systems. In that vein, experimental data on hadron abundance ratios, for example K/pi, in high-multiplicity pp events at high energies should be very interesting.

Explosive Decomposition in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collision

Recent results from Au+Au collisions at BNL-RHIC energy hint at explosive hadron production at the QCD transition rather than soft hydrodynamic evolution. We speculate that this is due to a rapid variation of the effective potential for QCD close to Tc. Performing real-time lattice simulations of an effective theory we show that the fast evolution of the potential leads to ``explosive'' spinodal decomposition rather than bubble nucleation or critical slowing down.

Nuclear Broadening Effects on Hard Prompt Photons at Relativistic Energies

We calculate prompt photon production in high-energy nuclear collisions. We focus on the broadening of the intrinsic transverse momenta of the partons in the initial state from nuclear effects, and their influence on the prompt photon p_t distribution. Comparing to WA98 data from Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energy we find evidence for the presence of nuclear broadening at high p_t in this hard process. Below p_t=2.7 GeV the photon distribution is due to small momentum transfer processes. At RHIC energy, the effect of intrinsic transverse momentum on the spectrum of prompt photons is less prominent. The region p_t=3-4 GeV would be the most promising for studying the nuclear broadening effects at that energy. Below p_t=2-3 GeV the contribution from large momentum transfers flattens out, and we expect that region to be dominated by soft contributions.

First-Order Chiral Phase Transition in High-Energy Collisions: Can Nucleation Prevent Spinodal Decomposition?

We discuss homogeneous nucleation in a first-order chiral phase transition within an effective field theory approach to low-energy QCD. Exact decay rates and bubble profiles are obtained numerically and compared to analytic results obtained with the thin-wall approximation. The thin-wall approximation overestimates the nucleation rate for any degree of supercooling. The time scale for critical thermal fluctuations is calculated and compared to typical expansion times for high-energy hadronic or heavy-ion collisions. We find that significant supercooling is possible, and the relevant mechanism for phase conversion might be that of spinodal decomposition. Some potential experimental signatures of supercooling, such as an increase in the correlation length of the scalar condensate, are also discussed.

Hydrodynamic Models for Heavy-Ion Collisions, and beyond

A generic property of a first-order phase transition in equilibrium, and in the limit of large entropy per unit of conserved charge, is the smallness of the isentropic speed of sound in the ``mixed phase''. A specific prediction is that this should lead to a non-isotropic momentum distribution of nucleons in the reaction plane (for energies around 40 AGeV in our model calculation). On the other hand, we show that from present effective theories for low-energy QCD one does not expect the thermal transition rate between various states of the effective potential to be much larger than the expansion rate, questioning the applicability of the idealized Maxwell/Gibbs construction. Experimental data could soon provide essential information on the dynamics of the phase transition.

Observing compact quark matter droplets in relativistic nuclear collisions

Compactness is introduced as a new method to search for the onset of the quark matter transition in relativistic heavy ion collisions. That transition supposedly leads to stronger compression and higher compactness of the source in coordinate space. That effect could be observed via pion interferometry. We propose to measure the compactness of the source in the appropriate principal axis frame of the compactness tensor in coordinate space.

The directed flow maximum near c_s=0

We investigate the excitation function of quark-gluon plasma formation and of directed in-plane flow of nucleons in the energy range of the BNL-AGS and for the E(Lab)=40AGeV Pb+Pb collisions performed recently at the CERN-SPS. We employ the three-fluid model with dynamical unification of kinetically equilibrated fluid elements. Within our model with first-order phase transition at high density, droplets of QGP coexisting with hadronic matter are produced already at BNL-AGS energies, E(Lab)=10AGeV. A substantial decrease of the isentropic velocity of sound, however, requires higher energies, E(Lab)=40AGeV. We show the effect on the flow of nucleons in the reaction plane. According to our model calculations, kinematic requirements and EoS effects work hand-in-hand at E(Lab)=40AGeV to allow the observation of the dropping velocity of sound via an increase of the directed flow around midrapidity as compared to top BNL-AGS energy.

On the Observation of Phase Transitions in Collisions of Elementary Matter

We investigate the excitation function of directed flow, which can provide a clear signature of the creation of the QGP and demonstrate that the minimum of the directed flow does not correspond to the softest point of the EoS for isentropic expansion. A novel technique measuring the compactness is introduced to determine the QGP transition in relativistic-heavy ion collisions: The QGP transition will lead to higher compression and therefore to higher compactness of the source in coordinate space. This effect can be observed by pion interferometry. We propose to measure the compactness of the source in the appropriate principal axis frame of the compactness tensor in coordinate space.

Dynamics of Hot Bulk QCD Matter: from the Quark-Gluon Plasma to Hadronic Freeze-Out

We introduce a combined macroscopic/microscopic transport approach employing relativistic hydrodynamics for the early, dense, deconfined stage of the reaction and a microscopic non-equilibrium model for the later hadronic stage where the equilibrium assumptions are not valid anymore. Within this approach we study the dynamics of hot, bulk QCD matter, which is expected to be created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at the SPS, the RHIC and the LHC. Our approach is capable of self-consistently calculating the freeze-out of the hadronic system, while accounting for the collective flow on the hadronization hypersurface generated by the QGP expansion. In particular, we perform a detailed analysis of the reaction dynamics, hadronic freeze-out, and transverse flow.

Hadron yields from thermalized minijets at RHIC and LHC

We calculate the yields of pions, kaons, and $ϕ$-mesons for RHIC and LHC energies assuming thermodynamical equilibration of the produced minijets, and using as input results from pQCD for the energy densities at midrapidity. In the calculation of the production of partons and of transverse energy one has to account for nuclear shadowing. By using two parametrizations for the gluon shadowing one derives energy densities differing strongly in magnitude. In this publication we link those perturbatively calculated energy densities of partons via entropy conservation in an ideal fluid to the hadron multiplicities at chemical freeze-out.

First-order chiral phase transition may naturally lead to the ``quenched'' initial condition and strong soft-pion fields

We propose a novel mechanism for DCC formation in a first-order chiral phase transition. In this case the effective potential for the chiral order parameter has a local minimum at $Φ\sim 0$ in which the chiral field can be ``trapped''. If the expansion is sufficiently fast a bubble of disoriented chiral field can emerge and decouple from the rest of the fireball. The bubble may overshoot the mixed phase and subsequently supercool until the barrier disappears, when the potential resembles that at T=0. This situation corresponds to the initial condition realized in a ``quench''. Thus, the subsequent alignment in the vacuum direction leads to strong amplification of low momentum modes of the pion field. We propose that these DCCs could accompany the previously suggested baryon rapidity fluctuations.

Hadronic freeze-out following a first order hadronization phase transition in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We analyze the hadronic freeze-out in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC in a transport approach which combines hydrodynamics for the early, dense, deconfined stage of the reaction with a microscopic non-equilibrium model for the later hadronic stage at which the hydrodynamic equilibrium assumptions are not valid. With this ansatz we are able to self-consistently calculate the freeze-out of the system and determine space-time hypersurfaces for individual hadron species. The space-time domains of the freeze-out for several hadron species are found to be actually four-dimensional, and differ drastically for the individual hadrons species. Freeze-out radii distributions are similar in width for most hadron species, even though the Omega-baryon is found to be emitted rather close to the phase boundary and shows the smallest freeze-out radii and times among all baryon species. The total lifetime of the system does not change by more than 10% when going from SPS to RHIC energies.

Antiflow of Nucleons at the Softest Point of the EoS

We investigate flow in semi-peripheral nuclear collisions at AGS and SPS energies within macroscopic as well as microscopic transport models. The hot and dense zone assumes the shape of an ellipsoid which is tilted by an angle Theta with respect to the beam axis. If matter is close to the softest point of the equation of state, this ellipsoid expands predominantly orthogonal to the direction given by Theta. This antiflow component is responsible for the previously predicted reduction of the directed transverse momentum around the softest point of the equation of state.
