SN 2025aico: Early observations of a faint Type IIb supernova with a low-mass envelope

We aimed to investigate the physical properties and the underlying explosion mechanisms of the Type IIb SN 2025aico. Through a comprehensive analysis of early-phase optical light curves and spectroscopic data, we aim to constrain the fundamental explosion parameters and evaluate the physical state of the event. We present early multi-band optical imaging and low-resolution optical spectroscopic follow-up observations of the Type IIb SN 2025aico, spanning approximately 70 days from the explosion. We constrain the properties of SN 2025aico by utilizing a hybrid model that combines shock-cooling emission and radioactively powered diffusion, as well as by analyzing the spectroscopic evolution. We use various approaches to constrain the 56Ni mixing from early data, and also compared our spectra with models to constrain the properties of the progenitor. The explosion epoch of SN 2025aico is estimated to be MJD 61032.69, while the rise time in the r_M-band is 22.30 +/- 0.70 days. The peak pseudo-bolometric luminosity in the optical bands is L_opt = (4.07 +/- 0.10) x 10^41 erg/s. The fitting yields a moderate to relatively low 56Ni mass of M_Ni = 0.033 +0.006/-0.004 M_sun and an ejecta mass of M_ej = 2.79 +0.21/-0.18 M_sun. The photospheric velocity near the bolometric peak, measured from the Fe II lambda 5169 line, is 6450 +180/-160 km/s. The derived envelope properties suggest a compact He-star progenitor possessing an H-rich envelope of M_env approx. 0.01 M_sun and a radius of R_env approx. 6-10 R_sun. The derived physical properties of SN 2025aico indicate an origin from a moderate-mass, stripped He-star in a compact binary system, characterized by a minimal residual hydrogen envelope. The explosion itself demonstrates weak to moderate 56Ni mixing throughout the ejecta.

Pulsars in Globular Clusters With the SKAO

Globular clusters (GCs) are highly efficient factories of radio pulsars: per unit of stellar mass, they contain about 1000 times more pulsars than in the Galactic field. Thus far, 345 radio pulsars have been found in GCs. These can be used as precision probes of the structure, gas content, magnetic field, and dynamic history of their host clusters; some of them are also highly interesting in their own right because they probe exotic stellar evolution scenarios, the physics of dense matter, accretion, gravity, etc. One of them (PSR~J0514$-$4002E) might even be the first pulsar - black hole system known. Deep searches with SKA telescopes will only require one to a few tied-array beams, and can be done during early commissioning of the telescopes, before an all-sky pulsar survey using hundreds to thousands of tied-array beams is feasible. Even a conservative approach predicts discoveries only with the core of SKA-MID AA*. Eventually, SKA-MID AA4 is expected to increase the number of discoveries even more, leading to more than doubling the current known population. Thus, a dedicated search for pulsars in GCs will fully utilise the best possible natural laboratories to study various branches of physics and astrophysics, including the properties of dense matter, stellar evolution, and the dynamical history of these GCs.

Surface Interactions in Photon Monte Carlo Simulations

We implement a comprehensive simulation of photon surface interactions using a Monte Carlo approach. This is effective in simulating the interaction of light with telescope mirrors and lenses. We use a full electromagnetic solution to simulate the wavelength and angular dependence at surfaces. This includes bare interfaces, monolayer interfaces, protected layer coatings, and multilayer coatings. We handle special cases when multilayer data is incomplete or when there is photo-conversion in the interface as with sensors. We implement interactions with surface micro-roughness and predict the corresponding angular distribution using a Monte Carlo implementation of the Harvey-Shack scatter theory for a microroughness power spectrum. Finally, we simulate surface interaction with contamination from dust or condensation using Mie scattering applied efficiently to individual contaminants. The combination of these implementations can efficiently simulate rough to polished surfaces of arbitrary materials that are fully cleaned or dusty. The observational consequences includes complex wavelength and spatial-dependent photometric errors, the dominant effect of the wings of point-spread-functions, dust rings, and wavelength and angle-dependent throughput losses. We find agreement with the point-spread-function wings of WIYN ODI observations of bright stars and properties of dust rings, and demonstrate the ability to disentangle mirror microroughness from the turbulence PSF patterns. The comprehensive numerical implementation of surface interactions has wide applicability in non-astronomical applications as well.

NGC 1851A: Revealing an ongoing three-body encounter in a dense globular cluster

PSR J0514$-$4002A is a binary millisecond pulsar located in the globular cluster NGC 1851. The pulsar has a spin period of 4.99 ms, an orbital period of 18.8 days, and is in a very eccentric ($e = 0.89$) orbit around a massive companion. In this work, we present the updated timing analysis of this system, obtained with an additional 1 yr of monthly observations using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and 2.5 yrs of observations using the MeerKAT telescope. This has allowed for a precise measurement of the proper motion of the system, implying a transverse velocity of $30\,\pm\,7\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ relative to the cluster. This is smaller than the cluster's escape velocity and consistent with the pulsar's association to NGC 1851. We have confirmed a large second spin frequency derivative and large associated jerk, which has increased the spin frequency derivative by a factor of 27 since the mid-2000s. The third spin frequency derivative showed that the strength of this jerk has increased by $\sim 65\%$ in the same time period. We take the effect of the changing acceleration into account and this allows for much improved estimates of the orbital period derivative. The large and fast-increasing jerk implies the presence of a third body in the vicinity of the pulsar (no counterpart is detectable within distance limit in HST images). Based on our measured parameters, we constrain the mass, distance and orbital parameters for this third body. The induced tidal contributions to the post-Keplerian parameters are small, and the precise measurement of these parameters allowed us to obtain precise mass measurements for the system: $M_\mathrm{tot} = 2.4734(3)$ M$_{\odot}$, $M_\mathrm{p} = 1.39(3)$ M$_{\odot}$, $M_\mathrm{c} = 1.08(3)$ M$_{\odot}$. This indicates that the pulsar's companion is a massive white dwarf and resolves the earlier ambiguity regarding its nature.

Weak Lensing analysis of Abell 2390 using short exposures

We present a weak lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 2390 at z = 0.23 using second moment shape measurements made in 411 short 60s exposures. The exposures are obtained in three broadband photometric filters (g, r, i) using WIYN-ODI. Shape measurement in individual exposures is done using a moment matching algorithm. Forced measurement is used when the moment matching algorithm fails to converge at low signal to noise ratio (SNR). The measurements made in individual images are combined using inverse error weight to obtain accurate shape of sources and hence recover shear. We use PhoSim simulations to validate shear measurements recovered by our pipeline. We find the mass of Abell 2390 is in agreement with previously published results. We also find the E-Mode maps show filamentary structures consistent with baryonic structures and recovers most clusters/groups of galaxies found using Optical and X-Ray data. Thus we demonstrate the feasibility of using Weak Lensing to map large scale structure of the universe. We also find the central portion of the cluster has a bimodal mass distribution and the relative orientation of the peaks are similar to X-Ray. We discuss earlier research on this galaxy cluster and show that a late stage merger accounts for all the observed data.

Discovery and timing of ten new millisecond pulsars in the globular cluster Terzan 5

We report the discovery of ten new pulsars in the globular cluster Terzan 5 as part of the Transients and Pulsars with MeerKAT (TRAPUM) Large Survey Project. We observed Terzan 5 at L-band (856--1712 MHz) with the MeerKAT radio telescope for four hours on two epochs, and performed acceleration searches of 45 out of 288 tied-array beams covering the core of the cluster. We obtained phase-connected timing solutions for nine discoveries, covering nearly two decades of archival observations from the Green Bank Telescope for all but one. Highlights include PSR J1748$-$2446ao which is an eccentric ($e = 0.32$) wide-orbit (orbital period $P_{\rm b} = 57.55$ d) system. We were able to measure the rate of advance of periastron ($\dotω$) for this system allowing us to determine a total mass of $3.17 \pm \, 0.02\, \rm M_{\odot}$. With a minimum companion mass ($M_{\rm c}$) of $\sim 0.8\, \rm M_{\odot}$, PSR J1748$-$2446ao is a candidate double neutron star (DNS) system. If confirmed to be a DNS, it would be the fastest spinning pulsar ($P = 2.27$ ms) and the longest orbital period measured for any known DNS system. PSR J1748$-$2446ap has the second highest eccentricity for any recycled pulsar ($e \sim 0.905$) and for this system we can measure the total mass ($1.997 \pm 0.006\, \rm M_{\odot}$) and also estimate the individual pulsar and companion masses. PSR J1748$-$2446ar is an eclipsing redback (minimum $M_{\rm c} \sim 0.34\, \rm M_{\odot}$) system whose properties confirm it to be the counterpart to a previously published source identified in radio and X-ray imaging. With these discoveries, the total number of confirmed pulsars in Terzan 5 is 49, the highest for any globular cluster so far. These discoveries further enhance the rich set of pulsars known in Terzan 5 and provide scope for a deeper understanding of binary stellar evolution, cluster dynamics and ensemble population studies.

Self-Consistent Atmosphere Representation and Interaction in Photon Monte Carlo Simulations

We present a self-consistent representation of the atmosphere and implement the interactions of light with the atmosphere using a photon Monte Carlo approach. We compile global climate distributions based on historical data, self-consistent vertical profiles of thermodynamic quantities, spatial models of cloud variation and cover, and global distributions of four kinds of aerosols. We then implement refraction, Rayleigh scattering, molecular interactions, Tyndall-Mie scattering to all photons emitted from astronomical sources and various background components using physics first principles. This results in emergent image properties that include: differential astrometry and elliptical point spread functions predicted completely to the horizon, arcminute-scale spatial-dependent photometry variations at 20 mmag for short exposures, excess background spatial variations at 0.2% due the atmosphere, and a point spread function wing due to water droplets. We reproduce the well-known correlations in image characteristics: correlations in altitude with absolute photometry (overall transmission) and relative photometry (spectrally-dependent transmission), anti-correlations of altitude with differential astrometry (non-ideal astrometric patterns) and background levels, and an anti-correlation in absolute photometry with cloud depth. However, we also find further subtle correlations including an anti-correlation of temperature with background and differential astrometry, a correlation of temperature with absolute and relative photometry, an anti-correlation of absolute photometry with humidity, a correlation of humidity with Lunar background, a significant correlation of PSF wing with cloud depth, an anti-correlation of background with cloud depth, and a correlation of lunar background with cloud depth.

Computation of a new error bound for tensor complementarity problem with P tensor

We propose a new error bound for the solution of tensor complementarity problem TCP$(q, \mathcal{A})$ given that $\mathcal{A}$ is a $P$-tensor and $q$ is a real vector. We show that the proposed error bound is sharper than the earlier version of error bound available in the literature. We establish absolute and relative error bound for TCP$(q, \mathcal{A})$ where $\mathcal{A}$ is an even order positive diagonal tensor. Keywords: Tensor complementarity problem, $P$-tensor, global error bound, positively homogeneous operator.

Column competent tensors and tensor complementarity problem

In multilinear algebra, some special classes of matrices are extended to higher order structured tensors. The local $w$-uniqueness solution to the linear complementarity problem can be identified by the column competent matrix. Motivated by this $w$-uniqueness property, we introduce column competent tensor in the context of tensor complementarity problem. We consider some important properties. In the theory of linear complementarity problem, column competent matrices are introduced to study local $w$-uniqueness property of LCP solution. We present the inheritance property and invariance property of column competent tensors. We study the tensor complementarity problem using column competent tensors and several results are established. Some examples are illustrated to support the results. Bounded Homotopy Path Approach to Find the Solution of Linear Complementarity Problems

In this article, we introduce a new homotopy function to trace the trajectory by applying modified homotopy continuation method for finding the solution of the linear complementarity problem. Earlier several authors attempted to propose homotopy functions based on original problems. We propose the homotopy function based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition of the corresponding quadratic programming problem. The proposed approach extends the processability of the larger class of linear complementarity problem and overcomes the limitations of other existing homotopy approaches. We show that the homotopy path approaching the solution is smooth and bounded with positive tangent direction of the homotopy path. Various classes of numerical examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the superiority of the algorithm among other existing iterative methods.

On Some Properties of $K$- type Block Matrices in the context of Complementarity Problem

In this article we introduce $K$-type block matrices which include two new classes of block matrices namely block triangular $K$-matrices and hidden block triangular $K$-matrices. We show that the solution of linear complementarity problem with $K$-type block matrices can be obtained by solving a linear programming problem. We show that block triangular $K$-matrices satisfy least element property. We prove that hidden block triangular $K$-matrices are $Q_0$ and processable by Lemke's algorithm. The purpose of this article is to study properties of $K$-type block matrices in the context of the solution of linear complementarity problem.
