T violation without complex entries in lepton mixing matrix

We demonstrate that T invariance can be violated even when Pontecorvo--Maki--Nakagawa--Sakata lepton mixing matrix is real. We obtain a sufficient condition of T violation in neutrino oscillations in matter and electromagnetic field. In the two-flavor model we derive the T-violating spin-flavor transition probabilities. Then we prove that the transition probabilities for neutrino in moving medium in electromagnetic field differ from those for antineutrino in matter composed of antiparticles and electromagnetic field only in the sign of the T-violating term.

Resonance enhancement of neutrino oscillations due to transition magnetic moments

We prove that a resonance enhancement of neutrino oscillations in magnetic field is possible due to transition magnetic moments and demonstrate that this resonance is strictly connected to the neutrino polarization. To study the main properties of this resonance, we obtain the probabilities of transitions between neutrino states with definite flavor and helicity in inhomogeneous electromagnetic field in the adiabatic approximation. Since the resonance is present only when the adiabaticity condition is fulfilled, we also obtain and discuss this condition.

Spin rotation of neutrinos produced by compact magnetized astrophysical objects

We study the propagation of neutrinos from compact astrophysical objects with strong magnetic field, such as magnetars. Both neutrino spin rotation and oscillations in a realistic three-flavor model are taken into account. We solve the neutrino evolution equation in the magnetic field near the object and obtain the probabilities of all possible spin-flavor transitions. Assuming that neutrinos are produced in the interior of the star being in their left-handed state with electron flavor, we use these spin-flavor transition probabilities to estimate the fraction of neutrinos, which change their helicity during propagation to the Earth and thus become unobservable. Using the model of the magnetar with dipolar magnetic field, we demonstrate anisotropy in the left-handed and right-handed neutrino fluxes from such astrophysical objects.

Neutrino flavor oscillations and spin rotation in matter and electromagnetic field

We obtain a relativistically covariant wave equation for neutrinos in dense matter and electromagnetic field, which describes both flavor oscillations and neutrino spin rotation. Using this equation we construct a quasi-classical theory of these phenomena. We obtain the probabilities of arbitrary spin-flavor transitions assuming the external conditions to be constant. We demonstrate that the resonance behavior of the transition probabilities is possible only when the neutrino flavor states cannot be described as superpositions of the mass eigenstates. We discover that a resonance, which is similar to the Mikheev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein resonance, takes place for neutrinos in magnetic field due to the transition magnetic moments. This resonance gives an opportunity to determine, whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles.

Stationary and non-stationary solutions of the evolution equation for neutrino in matter

We study solutions of the equation which describes the evolution of a neutrino propagating in dense homogeneous medium in the framework of the quantum field theory. In the two-flavor model the explicit form of Green function is obtained, and as a consequence the dispersion law for a neutrino in matter is derived. It is shown that there exist both the solutions describing the stationary states and the solutions describing the spin-flavor coherent states of the neutrino. The stationary states may be different from the mass eigenstates, and the wave function of a state with a definite flavor should be constructed as a linear combination of the wave functions of the stationary states with coefficients, which depend on the mixing angle in matter. In the ultra-relativistic limit the wave functions of the spin-flavor coherent states coincide with the solutions of the quasi-classical evolution equation. Quasi-classical approximation of the wave functions of spin-flavor coherent states is used to calculate the probabilities of transitions between neutrino states with definite flavor and helicity.

Particle quantum states with indefinite mass and neutrino oscillations

In this work we develop a mathematical formalism which allows obtaining oscillation formula for neutrino of any energy. We demonstrate that in the ultra-relativistic limit the results obtained in this new approach agree with the previously used phenomenological theory which is only applicable to ultra-relativistic neutrinos. To this end we do the following. The Hilbert spaces of particle states are constructed in such a way that the neutrinos are combined in a multiplet with its components being considered as different quantum states of a single particle. The same is done for the charged leptons and the down- and up-type quarks. In the theory based on the Lagrangian of the fermion sector of the Standard Model modified in accordance with this construction, the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations arises as a direct consequence of the general principles of quantum field theory. Using the example of the pion decay, when the resulting neutrino has to be ultra-relativistic, it is shown that the neutrino states produced in the decay process can be described by a superposition of states with different masses and identical canonical momenta with very high accuracy.

Neutrino oscillations in dense matter

We propose a modification of the electroweak theory, where the fermions with the same electroweak quantum numbers are combined in multiplets and are treated as different quantum states of a single particle. The developed approach enables one to calculate the probabilities of the processes taking place in the detector at long distances from the particle source. Calculations of higher-order processes including the computation of the contributions due to radiative corrections can be performed in the framework of the perturbation theory using the regular diagram technique. As a result, we obtain the analog to the Dirac--Schwinger equation of quantum electrodynamics describing neutrino oscillations and its spin rotation in dense matter.

Does the Borexino experiment have enough resolution to detect the neutrino flavor day-night asymmetry?

The Earth's density distribution can be approximately considered piecewise continuous at the scale of two-flavor oscillations of neutrinos with energies about 1 MeV. This quite general assumption appears to be enough to analytically calculate the day-night asymmetry factor. Using the explicit time averaging procedure, we show that, within the leading-order approximation, this factor is determined by the electron density immediately before the detector, i.e. in the Earth's crust. Within the approximation chosen, the resulting asymmetry factor does not depend either on the properties of the inner Earth's layers or on the substance and the dimensions of the detector. For beryllium neutrinos, we arrive at the asymmetry factor estimation of about $-4 \times 10^{-4}$, which is at least one order of magnitude beyond the present experimental resolution, including that of the Borexino experiment.

Pure quantum states of a neutrino with rotating spin in dense magnetized matter

The problem of neutrino spin rotation in dense matter and in strong electromagnetic fields is solved in accordance with the basic principles of quantum mechanics. We obtain a complete system of wave functions for a massive Dirac neutrino with an anomalous magnetic moment which are the eigenfunctions of the kinetic momentum operator and have the form of nonspreading wave packets. These wave functions enable one to consider the states of neutrino with rotating spin as pure quantum states and can be used for calculating probabilities of various processes with the neutrino in the framework of the Furry picture.

Neutrino-antineutrino pair production by a photon in a dense matter

The possibility of radiative effects that are due to interaction of fermions with a dense matter is investigated. Neutrino-antineutrino photo-production is studied. The rate of this process is calculated in the Furry picture. It is demonstrated that this effect does not disappear even if the medium refractive index is assumed to be equal to unity. The rate obtained strongly depends on the polarization states of the particles involved. This leads to evident spatial asymmetries, which may have certain consequences observable in astrophysical and cosmological studies.

Radiation and self-polarization of neutral fermions in quasi-classical description

A Lorentz invariant formalism for quasi-classical description of electromagnetic radiation from a neutral spin 1/2 particle with an anomalous magnetic moment moving in an external electromagnetic field is developed. In the high symmetry fields, for which analytical solutions to the Bargmann--Michel--Telegdi equation are known, the so called self-polarization axes, i. e. directions of preferred polarization of particles in the radiation process, are found. Expressions for the radiative transition probability and spectral-angular distribution of the radiation emitted by a polarized particle are obtained in the fields under consideration.

Radiative Effects in the Standard Model Extension

The possibility of radiative effects induced by the Lorentz and CPT non-invariant interaction term for fermions in the Standard Model Extension is investigated. In particular, electron-positron photo-production and photon emission by electrons and positrons are studied. The rates of these processes are calculated in the Furry picture. It is demonstrated that the rates obtained in the framework of the model adopted strongly depend on the polarization states of the particles involved. As a result, ultra-relativistic particles produced should occupy states with a preferred spin orientation, i.e., photons have the sign of polarization opposite to the sign of the effective potential, while charged particle are preferably in the state with the helicity coinciding with the sign of the effective potential. This leads to evident spatial asymmetries which may have certain consequences observable at high energy accelerators, and in astrophysical and cosmological studies.

High energy neutrino spin light

The quantum theory of spin light (electromagnetic radiation emitted by a Dirac massive neutrino propagating in dense matter due to the weak interaction of a neutrino with background fermions) is developed. In contrast to the Cherenkov radiation, this effect does not disappear even if the medium refractive index is assumed to be equal to unity. The formulas for the transition rate and the total radiation power are obtained. It is found out that radiation of photons is possible only when the sign of the particle helicity is opposite to that of the effective potential describing the interaction of a neutrino (antineutrino) with the background medium. Due to the radiative self-polarization the radiating particle can change its helicity. As a result, the active left-handed polarized neutrino (right-handed polarized antineutrino) converting to the state with inverse helicity can become practically ``sterile''. Since the sign of the effective potential depends on the neutrino flavor and the matter structure, the spin light can change a ratio of active neutrinos of different flavors. In the ultra relativistic approach, the radiated photons averaged energy is equal to one third of the initial neutrino energy, and two thirds of the energy are carried out by the final ``sterile'' neutrinos.

Radiative transitions of high energy neutrino in dense matter

The quantum theory of the ``spin light'' (electromagnetic radiation emitted by a massive neutrino propagating in dense matter due to the weak interaction of a neutrino with background fermions) is developed. Since the sign of the effective potential depends on the neutrino flavor and the matter structure, the ``spin light'' can change a ratio of active neutrinos of different flavors. In the ultra relativistic approach, the radiated photons averaged energy is equal to one third of the initial neutrino energy, and two thirds of the energy are carried out by the final ``sterile'' neutrinos. This fact can be important for the understanding of the ``dark matter'' formation mechanism on the early stages of evolution of the Universe.

Neutrino Oscillations in Electromagnetic Fields

Oscillations of neutrinos $ν_L \leftrightarrow ν_R$ in presence of an arbitrary electromagnetic field are considered. We introduce the Hamiltonian for the neutrino spin evolution equation that accounts for possible effects of interaction of neutrino magnetic $μ$ and electric $ε$ dipole moments with the transversal (in respect to the neutrino momentum) and also the longitudinal components of electromagnetic field. Using this Hamiltonian we predict the new types of resonances in the neutrino oscillations $ν_L \leftrightarrow ν_R$ in the presence of the field of an electromagnetic wave and in combination of an electromagnetic wave and constant magnetic field. The possible influence of the longitudinal magnetic field on neutrino oscillations is emphasized.
