Surrogate-accelerated parameterisation of physics-based Li-ion battery models

Physics-based lithium-ion battery models provide access to physically meaningful internal electrochemical states and processes, but cell-specific parameter inference from terminal current-voltage data is computationally expensive and limited by identifiability. We present a surrogate-accelerated inverse framework based on a single-particle model with electrolyte dynamics (SPMe). Its forward map uses our Artiphy surrogate framework for rapid, differentiable evaluation of voltage and selected internal states. After rescaling to remove exact structural redundancies, we infer non-redundant transport, kinetic and capacity parameter groups, including concentration-dependent solid and electrolyte diffusivities. Synthetic voltage data from a Doyle-Fuller-Newman (DFN) model under a WLTP-like current protocol provide a benchmark with known reference parameters and controlled model discrepancy. The inferred SPMe reproduces the benchmark voltage with an error of order 1 mV and recovers electrode capacities well. Positive-electrode diffusivity is recovered accurately over much of the probed stoichiometric range. Local sensitivity and Fisher-information analysis identifies correlated kinetic-Ohmic and electrolyte-transport directions, and shows how localised information and the global diffusivity parameterisation can yield narrow Fisher-curvature envelopes despite weak voltage sensitivity to negative-electrode diffusion over much of the drive cycle. These results represent a step towards rapid physics-based in-silico parameterisation and reduced reliance on destructive cell characterisation.

A fast and accurate method for inferring solid-state diffusivity in lithium-ion battery active materials: improving upon the classical GITT approach

Data collected using the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and application of the Sand equation is a ubiquitous method for inferring the solid-state diffusivity in lithium-ion battery active materials. However, the experiment is notoriously time-consuming and the Sand equation relies on assumptions whose applicability can be questionable. We propose a novel methodology, termed Inference from a Consistent Model (ICM), which enables inference of solid-state diffusivity using the same physical model employed for prediction, and is applicable to more general and quick-to-measure data. We infer the diffusivity (as a function of inserted lithium concentration) by minimising the residual sum of squares between data and solutions to a spherically-symmetric nonlinear diffusion model in a single representative active material particle. Using data harvested from the NMC cathode of a commercial LG M50 cell we demonstrate that the ICM is robust, and yields more accurate diffusivity estimates, while relying on data that are five times faster to collect than that required by the classical approach. Moreover, there is good reason to believe that further speed ups could be achieved when other types of data are available. This work contributes towards developing faster and more reliable techniques in parameter inference for lithium-ion batteries, and the code required to deploy ICM is provided to facilitate its adoption in future research.

Gravitational wave interactions in $Λ_3$ models of dark energy

We argue that cubic order interactions between two scalar gravitons and one tensor graviton are ubiquitous in models of dark energy where the strong coupling scale is $Λ_3$. These interactions can potentially provide efficient decay channels for gravitational waves. They can also lead to gradient instabilities of the scalar perturbations in the presence of large amplitude gravitational waves, e.g. those detected by LIGO/Virgo. In contrast with models in scalar-tensor theories, there is an infinite number of higher order interactions in generic $Λ_3$ models, which make it difficult to predict the fate of these instabilities inferred from cubic order interactions.

Spinning Guest Fields during Inflation: Leftover Signatures

We consider the possibility of extra spinning particles during inflation, focussing on the spin-2 case. Our analysis relies on the well-known fully non-linear formulation of interacting spin-2 theories. We explore the parameter space of the corresponding inflationary Lagrangian and identify regions therein exhibiting signatures within reach of upcoming CMB probes. We provide a thorough study of the early and late-time dynamics ensuring that stability conditions are met throughout the cosmic evolution. We characterise in particular the gravitational wave spectrum and three-point function finding a local-type non-Gaussianity whose amplitude may be within the sensitivity range of both the LiteBIRD and CMB-S4 experiments.

Vainshtein Mechanism in Generalised Massive Gravity

We present a non-linear analysis of perturbations around cosmological solutions in Generalised Massive gravity. This Lorentz invariant theory is an extension of de Rham, Gabadadze, Tolley massive gravity that propagates $5$ degrees of freedom while allowing stable open FLRW cosmologies. For a minimal model that supports a self-accelerating background, we study the dynamics of non-linear perturbations. We find that the equation for the scalar graviton is distinct from the analogues in Horndeski and DHOST theories. We numerically solve the equation to find a new type of nonlinear solution for the scalar mode, and confirm the presence of a Vainshtein screening mechanism. We show that the PPN parameter approaches its GR value at solar system scales and satisfies the current bounds.

Unified framework for Early Dark Energy from $α$-attractors

One of the most appealing approaches to ease the Hubble tension is the inclusion of an early dark energy (EDE) component that adds energy to the Universe in a narrow redshift window around the time of recombination and dilutes faster than radiation afterwards. In this paper, we analyze EDE in the framework of $α$-attractor models. As well known, the success in alleviating the Hubble tension crucially depends on the shape of the energy injection. We show how different types of energy injections can be easily obtained, thanks to the freedom in choosing the functional form of the potential inspired by $α$-attractor models. To confirm our intuition we perform an MCMC analysis for three representative cases and find indeed that $H_0$ is significantly larger than in $Λ$CDM like in other EDE models. Unlike axion-driven EDE models with super Planckian decay constant, the curvature of EDE models required by the data is natural in the context of recent theoretical developments in $α$-attractors.

Cosmic Acceleration and Growth of Structure in Massive Gravity

We introduce a cosmological model in the framework of Generalised Massive Gravity. This theory is an extension of non-linear massive gravity with a broken translation symmetry in the Stückelberg space. In a recent work, we showed the existence of cosmological solutions stable against linear perturbations. In the present paper, we build up on the previous result and study the evolution of the background solutions and the linear perturbations. At the background level, we find that the mass terms act like a fluid with time dependent equation of state $w < -1$ at late times. At linear order, we derive the Poisson's equation. We find that the scalar graviton mode invokes anisotropic stress, which brings a modification with respect to LCDM in the effective Newton's constant and the growth rate of matter perturbations. Moreover, we study the propagation of gravitational waves and find that the tensor modes acquire a time dependent mass.

A larger value for $H_0$ by an evolving gravitational constant

We provide further evidence that a massless cosmological scalar field with a non-minimal coupling to the Ricci curvature of the type $M^2_{\rm pl}(1+ξσ^n/M_{\rm pl}^n) $ alleviates the existing tension between local measurements of the Hubble constant and its inference from CMB anisotropies and baryonic acoustic oscillations data in presence of a cosmological constant. In these models, the expansion history is modified compared to $Λ$CDM at early time, mimicking a change in the effective number of relativistic species, and gravity weakens after matter-radiation equality. Compared to $Λ$CDM, a quadratic ($n=2$) coupling increases the Hubble constant when {\em Planck} 2018 (alone or in combination with BAO and SH0ES) measurements data are used in the analysis. Negative values of the coupling, for which the scalar field decreases, seem favored and consistency with Solar System can be naturally achieved for a large portion of the parameter space without the need of any screening mechanism. We show that our results are robust to the choice of $n$, also presenting the analysis for $n=4$.

Massive gravity with non-minimal coupling

We propose new massive gravity theories with 5 dynamical degrees of freedom. We evade uniqueness theorems regarding the form of the kinetic and potential terms by adopting the "generalized massive gravity" framework, where a global translation invariance is broken. By exploiting the rotation symmetry in the field space, we determine two novel classes of theories. The first one is an extension of generalized massive gravity with a non-minimal coupling. On the other hand, the second theory produces a mass term that is different from de Rham, Gabadadze, Tolley construction and trivially has 5 degrees of freedom. Both theories allows for stable cosmological solutions without infinite strong coupling, which are free of ghost and gradient instabilities.

Stable Cosmology in Generalised Massive Gravity

We present a thorough analysis of the cosmological perturbations in Generalised Massive Gravity. This is an extension of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley theory where the translation invariance in the Stückelberg field space is broken. This allows the mass parameters to be promoted to functions of the Stückelberg fields. We consider an exact cosmological background in this theory and study the stability of perturbations. We derive conditions to avoid ghost, gradient and tachyonic instability. The cosmology is an extension of the self-accelerating branch of the constant mass parameter theory, but now all five massive graviton polarisations propagate. For concreteness, we consider a minimal version of the theory where cosmology undergoes an accelerated expansion at late times and show that the perturbative stability is preserved for a range of parameters.

Role of matter in gravitation: going beyond the Einstein-Maxwell theory

For field theories in curved spacetime, defining how matter gravitates is part of the theory building process. In this letter, we adopt Bekenstein's multiple geometries approach to allow part of the matter sector to follow the geodesics on a general pseudo-Riemannian geometry, constructed from a tensor and a $U(1)$ gauge field. This procedure allows us to generate a previously unknown corner of vector-tensor theories. In the Jordan frame, apparent high-derivative terms of the vector field are reduced by integrating out an auxiliary variable, at the cost of introducing new matter interactions. As a simple example, we consider a conformal relation between different geometries and demonstrate the presence of an auxiliary degree. We conclude with a discussion of applications, in particular for the early universe.

On the viability of bigravity cosmology

We revisit the question of viability of bigravity cosmology as a candidate for dark energy. In the context of the low energy limit model, where matter couples to a single metric, we study linear perturbations around homogeneous and isotropic backgrounds to derive the Poisson's equation for the Newtonian potential. Extending to second order perturbations, we identify the Vainshtein radius below which non-linear scalar self interactions conspire to reproduce GR on local scales. We combine all of these results to determine the parameter space that allows a late time de-Sitter attractor compatible with observations and a successful Vainsthein mechanism. We find that the requirement on having a successful Vainsthein mechanism is not compatible with the existence of cosmological solutions at early times.

Generalising the matter coupling in massive gravity: a search for new interactions

Massive gravity theory introduced by de Rham, Gabadadze, Tolley (dRGT) is restricted by several uniqueness theorems that protect the form of the potential and kinetic terms, as well as the matter coupling. These restrictions arise from the requirement that the degrees of freedom match the expectation from Poincaré representations of a spin--2 field. Any modification beyond the dRGT form is known to invalidate a constraint that the theory enjoys and revive a dangerous sixth mode. One loophole is to exploit the effective nature of the theory by pushing the sixth mode beyond the strong coupling scale without completely removing it. In this paper, we search for modifications to dRGT action by coupling the matter sector to an arbitrary metric constructed out of the already existing degrees of freedom in the dRGT action. We formulate the conditions that such an extension should satisfy in order to prevent the sixth mode from contaminating the effective theory. Our approach provides a new perspective for the "composite coupling" which emerges as the unique extension up to four-point interactions.

Revisiting the cuscuton as a Lorentz-violating gravity theory

The cuscuton is a scalar field with infinite speed of propagation. It was introduced in the context of cosmology but it has also been claimed to resemble Horava gravity in a certain limit. Here we revisit the cuscuton theory as a Lorentz-violating gravity theory. We clarify its relation with Horava gravity and Einstein-aether theory, analyze its causal structure, and consider its initial value formulation. Finally, we discuss to which extent the cuscuton theory can be used as a proxy for Horava gravity in the context of gravitational collapse and formation of universal horizons.

Stable cosmology in ghost-free quasidilaton theory

We present a novel cosmological solution in the framework of extended quasidilaton theory which underwent scrutiny recently. We only consider terms that do not generate the Boulware-Deser degree of freedom, hence the "ghost-free" quasidilaton theory, and show three new branches of cosmological evolution therein. One of the solutions passes the perturbative stability tests. This new solution exhibits a late time self-acceleration and all graviton polarizations acquire masses that converge to a constant in the asymptotic future. Moreover, all modes propagate at the speed of light. We propose that this solution can be used as a benchmark model for future phenomenological studies.

Role of matter in extended quasidilaton massive gravity

The extended quasidilaton theory is one of the simplest Lorentz-invariant massive gravity theories which can accommodate a stable self-accelerating vacuum solution. In this paper we revisit this theory and study the effect of matter fields. For a matter sector that couples minimally to the physical metric, we find hints of a Jeans type instability in the IR. In the analogue k-essence field set-up, this instability manifests itself as an IR ghost for the scalar field perturbation, but this can be interpreted as a classical instability that becomes relevant below some momentum scale in terms of matter density perturbations. We also consider the effect of the background evolution influenced by matter on the stability of the gravity sector perturbations. In particular, we address the previous claims of ghost instability in the IR around the late time attractor. We show that, although the matter-induced modification of the evolution potentially brings tension to the stability conditions, one goes beyond the regime of validity of the effective theory well before the solutions become unstable. We also draw attention to the fact that the IR stability conditions are also enforced by the existence requirements of consistent background solutions.

Jeans' Ghost

We show that a massless canonical scalar field minimally coupled to general relativity can become a tachyonic ghost at low energies around a background in which the scalar's gradient is spacelike. By performing a canonical transformation we demonstrate that this low energy ghost can be recast, at the level of the action, in a form of a fluid that undergoes a Jeans-like instability affecting only modes with large wavelength. This illustrates that low-energy tachyonic ghosts do not lead to a catastrophic quantum vacuum instability, unlike the usual high-energy ghost degrees of freedom.
