On alternating-conjugate splitting methods

The new class of alternating-conjugate splitting methods is presented and analyzed. They are obtained by concatenating a given composition involving complex coefficients with the same composition but with the complex conjugate coefficients. We show that schemes of this type exhibit a good long time behavior when applied to linear unitary and linear Hamiltonian systems, in contrast with other methods based on complex coefficients, and study in detail their preservation properties. We also present new schemes within this class up to order 6 that exhibit a better efficiency than state-of-the-art splitting methods with real coefficients for some classes of problems.

Approximating exponentials of commutators by optimized product formulas

Trotter product formulas constitute a cornerstone quantum Hamiltonian simulation technique. However, the efficient implementation of Hamiltonian evolution of nested commutators remains an under explored area. In this work, we construct optimized product formulas of orders 3 to 6 approximating the exponential of a commutator of two arbitrary operators in terms of the exponentials of the operators involved. The new schemes require a reduced number of exponentials and thus provide more efficient approximations than other previously published alternatives. They can also be used as basic methods in recursive procedures to increase the order of approximation. We expect this research will improve the efficiency of quantum control protocols, as well as quantum algorithms such as the Zassenhaus-based product formula, Magnus operator-based time-dependent simulation, and product formula schemes with modified potentials.

Runge-Kutta-Nyström symplectic splitting methods of order 8

Different families of Runge-Kutta-Nyström (RKN) symplectic splitting methods of order 8 are presented for second-order systems of ordinary differential equations and are tested on numerical examples. They show a better efficiency than state-of-the-art symmetric compositions of 2nd-order symmetric schemes and RKN splitting methods of orders 4 and 6 for medium to high accuracy. For some particular examples, they are even more efficient than extrapolation methods for high accuracies and integrations over relatively short time intervals.

Applying splitting methods with complex coefficients to the numerical integration of unitary problems

We explore the applicability of splitting methods involving complex coefficients to solve numerically the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We prove that a particular class of integrators are conjugate to unitary methods for sufficiently small step sizes when applied to problems defined in the group $\mathrm{SU}(2)$. In the general case, the error in both the energy and the norm of the numerical approximation provided by these methods does not possess a secular component over long time intervals, when combined with pseudo-spectral discretization techniques in space.
