Persistent currents, deformation and collectivity in the many-boson yrast problem on the circle

Properties of the yrast states of a system of $N$ bosons confined to a one-dimensional ring and interacting via contact forces is examined both variationally and by numerical diagonalizations. The latter allow for obtaining numerical correlated many-body wave functions explicitly. The study of correlation functions involving different yrast states indicates that a quantum phase transition previously detected in the properties of the ground state in the case of attractive two-body interactions is an yrast phenomenon involving the onset of `deformation', in the sense given to this term by Bohr and Mottelson in connection with the description of nuclear spectra, including enhanced transition operators and emergence of a shared intrinsic correlation structure. In this case the moment of inertia of the deformed state is essentially the rigid moment of inertia, `intrinsic' states being essentially degenerate.

Delocalization and superfluidity of ultracold bosonic atoms in a ring lattice

Properties of bosonic atoms in small systems with a periodic quasi one-dimensional circular toroidal lattice potential subjected to rotation are examined by performing exact diagonalization in a truncated many body space. The expansion of the many-body Hamiltonian is considered in terms of the first band Bloch functions, and no assumption regarding restriction to nearest-neighbor hopping (tight-binding approximation) is involved. A finite size version of the zero temperature phase diagrams of Fisher et al. \cite{Fisher} is obtained and the results, in remarkable quantitative correspondence with the results available for larger systems, discussed. Ground state properties relating to superfluidity are examined in the context of two-fluid phenomenology. The basic tool, consisting of the intrinsic inertia associated with small rotation angular velocities in the lab frame, is used to obtain ground state `superfluid fractions' numerically. They are analytically associated with one-body, uniform solenoidal currents in the case of the adopted geometry. These currents are in general incoherent superpositions of contributions from each eigenstate of the associated reduced one-body densities, with the corresponding occupation numbers as weights. Full coherence occurs therefore only when only one eigenstate is occupied by all bosons. The obtained numerical values for the superfluid fractions remain small throughout the parameter region corresponding to the `Mott insulator to superfluid' transition, and saturate at unity only as the lattice is completely smoothed out.

Elementary excitations of a Higgs-Yukawa system

This work investigates the physics of elementary excitations for the so-called relativistic quantum scalar plasma system, also known as the Higgs-Yukawa system. Following the Nemes-Piza-Kerman-Lin many-body procedure, the Random-Phase Approximation (RPA) equations were obtained for this model by linearizing the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations of motion around equilibrium. The resulting equations have a closed solution, from which the spectrum of excitation modes are studied. We show that the RPA oscillatory modes give the one-boson and two-fermion states of the theory. The results indicate the existence of bound states in certain regions in the phase diagram. Applying these results to recent LHC observations concerning the mass of the Higgs boson, we determine limits for the intensity of the coupling constant g of the Higgs-Yukawa model, in the RPA mean-field approximation, for three decay channels of the Higgs boson. Finally, we verify that, within our approximations, only Higgs bosons with masses larger than 190 GeV/c^2 can decay into top quarks.

Quantum entanglement of bound particles under free center of mass dispersion

On the basis of the full analytical solution of the overall unitary dynamics, the time evolution of entanglement is studied in a simple bipartite model system evolving unitarily from a pure initial state. The system consists of two particles in one spacial dimension bound by harmonic forces and having its free center of mass initially localized in space in a minimum uncertainty wave packet. The existence of such initial states in which the bound particles are not entangled is pointed out. The entanglement of the two particles is shown to be independent of the wavepacket mean momentum, and to increase monotonically in a time scale distinct from that of the spreading of the center of mass wavepacket.

Doorway states and the Bose-Hubbard model

We introduce an efficient method to solve the Mott-Hubbard model. The Schrödinger equation is solved by the successive construction of doorway states. The ground state wavefunction derived by this method contains all relevant many-body correlations introduced by the hamiltonian, but the dimensionality of the Hilbert space is greatly reduced. We apply the doorway method to obtain the chemical potential, the on-site fluctuations and the visibility of the interference pattern arising from atoms in a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Excellent agreement with exact numerical calculations as well as recent experimental observations is found.

Dispersion and uncertainty in multislit matter wave diffraction

We show that single and multislit experiments involving matter waves may be constructed to assess correlations between the position and momentum of a single free particle. These correlations give rise to position dependent phases which develop dynamically and may play an important role in the interference patterns. For large enough transverse coherence lenght such interference patterns are noticeably different from those of a classical dispersion free wave.

Quantum dynamics of bosons in a double-well potential: Josephson oscillations, self-trapping and ultralong tunneling times

The dynamics of the population imbalance of bosons in a double-well potential is investigated from the point of view of many-body quantum mechanics in the framework of the two-mode model. For small initial population imbalances, coherent superpositions of almost equally spaced energy eigenstates lead to Josephson oscillations. The suppression of tunneling at population imbalance beyond a critical value is related to a high concentration of initial state population in the region of the energy spectrum with quasi-degenerate doublets resulting in imbalance oscillations with a very small amplitude. For unaccessible long times, however, the system recovers the regime of Josephson oscillations.

Classification of Tripartite Entanglement with one Qubit

We present a method to find the decompositions of tripartite entangled pure states which are smaller than two successive Schmidt decompositions. The method becomes very simple when one of the subsystems is a qubit. In this particular case, we get a classification of states according to their decompositions. Furthermore, we also use this method to classify the entangled states that can be inter-converted through stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). More general tripartite systems are briefly discussed.

Semiclassical coherent state propagator for systems with spin

We derive the semiclassical limit of the coherent state propagator for systems with two degrees of freedom of which one degree of freedom is canonical and the other a spin. Systems in this category include those involving spin-orbit interactions and the Jaynes-Cummings model in which a single electromagnetic mode interacts with many independent two-level atoms. We construct a path integral representation for the propagator of such systems and derive its semiclassical limit. As special cases we consider separable systems, the limit of very large spins and the case of spin 1/2.

Generalization of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory: one and two quasiparticle excitations

We present a generalization of the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (HFB) theory in which the coupling between one and two quasi-particles is taken into account. This is done by writing the excitation operators as linear combinations of one and two HFB quasi-particles. The excitation energies and the quasi-particle amplitudes are given by generalized Bogoliubov equations. The excitation spectrum has two branches. The first one is a discrete branch which is gapless and has a phonon character at large wave-length and, contrarily to HFB, is always stable. This branch is detached from a continuum branch whose threshold, at fixed total momentum, coincides with the two quasi-particle threshold of the HFB theory. The gap between these two branches at P=0 is equal to two times the HFB gap, which then provides for the relevant energy scale. We also give numerical results for a specific case.

Molecular Signatures in Hybrid Atomic/Molecular Bose-Einstein Condensates

As it was proposed and recently verified experimentally, the mechanism of Feshbach resonance in a condensate can create a second condensate component of molecules that coexists with the atomic condensate. In this work we investigate signatures of the presence of the molecular condensate through the equilibrium properties and collective excitations of the hybrid system of atoms and molecules, subjected to a trap, employing a time-dependent variational ansatz. We show that the shape of the condensate changes significantly by the presence of the molecules and that modes unique to this hybrid system appear at observable frequencies.

Phases of quantum states in completely positive non-unitary evolution

We define an operational notion of phases in interferometry for a quantum system undergoing a completely positive non-unitary evolution. This definition is based on the concepts of quantum measurement theory. The suitable generalization of the Pancharatnan connection allows us to determine the dynamical and geometrical parts of the total phase between two states linked by a completely positive map. These results reduce to the knonw expressions of total, dynamical and geometrical phases for pure and mixed states evolving unitarily.

Excitation of Triple Giant Resonances in Heavy-Ion Reactions

We calculate the cross-section for the excitation and subsequent decay of triple giant resonances(TGDR) in several nuclei excited with heavy ions. The recently developed coherent plus incoherent theory for excitation in conjunction with the hybrid decay model of Dias-Hussein-Adhikari are used for the purpose. It is emphasized that the direct decay of TGDR is expected to deviate appreciably from the harmonic limit especially at low bombarding energies, owing to the incoherent contribution.

Equilibrium and stability properties of a coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

The equilibrium and stability properties of a coupled two-component BEC is studied using a variational method and the one-dimensional model of Williams and collaborators. The variational parameters are the population fraction, translation and scaling transformation of the condensate densities, assumed to have a Gaussian shape. We study the equilibrium and stability properties as a function of the strength of the laser field and the traps displacement. We find many branches of equilibrium configurations, with a host of critical points. In all cases, the signature of the onset of criticality is the collapse of a normal mode which is a linear combination of the out of phase translation and an in phase breathing oscillation of the condensate densities. Our calculations also indicate that we have symmetry breaking effects when the traps are not displaced

Stern-Gerlach Entanglement in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Entanglement of spin and position variables produced by spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields of Stern-Gerlach type acting on spinor Bose-Einstein condensates may lead to interference effects at the level of one-boson densities. A model is worked out for these effects which is amenable to analytical calculation for gaussian shaped condensates. The resulting interference effects are sensitive to the spin polarization properties of the condensate.

Sensitivity to Initial Conditions in Quantum Dynamics: an Analytical Semiclassical Expansion

We construct a class of systems for which quantum dynamics can be expanded around a mean field approximation with essentially classical content. The modulus of the quantum overlap of mean field states naturally introduces a classical distance between classical phase points. Using this fact we analytically show that the time rate of change (trc) of two neighbouring classical trajectories is directly proportional to the trc of quantum correlations. Coherence loss and nonlocality effects appear as corrections to mean field dynamics and we show that they can be given in terms of classical trajectories and generalized actions. This result is a first step in the connection between quantum and classically chaotic dynamics in the same sense of semiclassical expansions for the density of states. We apply the results to the nonintegrable (classically chaotic) version of the N-atom Jaynes-Cummings model.

Anomalous anapole moment of an exotic nucleus

Using the information on the nuclear structure of exotic neutron-rich halo nucleus $^{11}$Be, we evaluate the parity violating anapole moment in its ground state. The resulting value $κ(^{11}$Be)$=0.17$ is fifteen times bigger than the typical value of the anapole moment of a normal nucleus of the same mass, and in fact exceeds by few times anapole moments of any known neutron-odd nuclei (e.g., kappa(^{11}Be) > 2|κ(^{207}Pb)|. It is also few times bigger than the neutral current contribution to the lepton-nucleus interaction.

Interfering with decay of a single photon in microwave cavities through single photon quantum non-demolition scheme

The decay of a single photon in a microwave cavity is shown to be retarded by interaction with a resonant two-level atom in the experimental setup recently developed by Nogues and co-workers [see G. Nogues, A. Rauschenbeutel, S. Osnaghi, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond and S. Haroche, Nature vol 400, 239(1999)]. The effect may be interpreted in terms of the temporary removal of the photon from the cavity thereby protecting it from the effects of the environment to wich the cavity is coupled. Realistic parameters lead to a significative increase of the survival probability of the photon subsequently to the monitoring interaction.
