Narrow spectral artifact investigation and mitigation in LIGO data from the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run

We present efforts to identify, characterize, and mitigate narrow spectral artifacts in LIGO detector data during the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run. Narrow spectral artifacts in gravitational-wave detectors are non-astrophysical noise sources that can degrade searches for narrowband persistent gravitational waves. Identifying and, where possible, mitigating these noise sources is one of the core efforts of the LIGO Detector Characterization group. Key software tools have been updated and new tools deployed for the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run to facilitate investigations and data monitoring. We discuss these tool upgrades, and present several identified narrowband artifacts that have been successfully investigated and mitigated in LIGO data. Regardless of whether artifacts are mitigated or not, narrowband persistent gravitational-wave searches require information on which frequency bands contain non-astrophysical artifacts. Minimizing the number of bands containing non-astrophysical artifacts is essential to maximize the potential for discovery of a new class of gravitational-wave signals.

Newman-Penrose scalars and black hole equations of state

In this work we explore the connections between Newman-Penrose scalars, including the Penrose-Rindler $\mathcal{K}$-curvature, with the equation of state of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Reissner-Nordström black holes. After briefly reviewing the equation of state for these black holes from the point of view of both the Extended Phase Space and the Horizon Thermodynamics approaches, a geometric splitting is given for such an equation in terms of the non vanishing Newman-Penrose scalars which define the $\mathcal{K}$-curvature at the horizon. From this splitting, a possible thermodynamical interpretation is developed for such scalars in the context of the black hole thermodynamics approaches initially discussed. Afterwards, the square root of the Bel-Robinson tensor is employed to propose conditions at the horizons in terms of pressures or energy densities, which can be understood as alternative thermodynamical definitions of these surfaces.

SAdS black holes and spacetime atoms: a heuristic approach

In this work, both extended phase space and holographic equipartition approaches are employed to develop an exact Van der Waals description of non--rotating $D=4$ SAdS black holes as an ensemble of spacetime atoms. After a possible microscopical interaction model is introduced, statistical mechanics techniques, with certain heuristic gravitational constraints, are used to derive the equation of state and the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy. The procedure is generalized to the charged $D=4$ SAdS black hole and to arbitrary $D\ge 3$ dimensions for the uncharged cases.
