Josephson effect due to the long-range odd-frequency triplet superconductivity in SFS junctions with Neel domain walls

We consider a SFS Josephson junction made of two superconductors S and a multidomain ferromagnet F with an in-plane magnetization. We assume that the neighboring domains of the ferromagnet are separated by Neel domain walls. An odd-frequency triplet long-range component of superconducting correlations arises in the domain walls and spreads into the domains over a long distance of the order $ξ_T = \sqrt{D / 2 πT}$, where $D$ is the diffusion coefficient (dirty limit is implied). We calculate the contribution of this component to the Josephson current in the situation when conventional short-range components exponentially decay over the thickness of the F layer and can be neglected. In the limit when the thickness of the F layer is much smaller than the penetration length of the long-range component, we find that the junction is in the $π$ state. We also analyze a correction to the density of states due to the long-range triplet component.

Proximity Effects in Ferromagnet/Superconductor Heterostructures

We review the present status of the experimental and theoretical research on the proximity effect in heterostructures composed of superconducting (S) and ferromagnetic (F) thin films. First, we discuss traditional effects originating from the oscillatory behavior of the superconducting pair wave function in the F-layer. Then, we concentrate on recent theoretical predictions for S/F layer systems. These are a) generation of odd triplet superconductivity in the F-layer and b) ferromagnetism induced in the S-layer below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ (inverse proximity effect). The second part of the review is devoted to discussion of experiments relevant to the theoretical predictions of the first part. In particular, we present results of measurements of the critical temperature $T_{c}$ as a function of the thickness of F-layers and we review experiments indicating existence of odd triplet superconductivity, cryptoferromagnetism and inverse proximity effect.

Dephasing of conduction electrons by magnetic impurities in Cu/Ni and Cu/Cr samples: Influence of spin-glass transition on the superconducting proximity effect

The dependence of the superconducting proximity effect on the amount of magnetic impurities in the normal part of Andreev interferometers has been studied experimentally. The dephasing rates obtained from fitting experimental data to quasiclassical theory of the proximity effect are consistent with the spin flip scattering from Cr impurities forming a local moment in the Cu host. In contrast, Ni impurities do not form a local moment in Cu and as a result there is no extra dephasing from Ni as long as Cu/Ni alloy remain paramagnetic.

Comment on ''Superconducting decay length in a ferromagnetic metal''

In the paper " Superconducting decay length in a ferromagnetic metal" by Gusakova, Kupriyanov and Golubov [Pis'ma v ZhETF 83, 487 (2006); cond-mat/0605137], the authors claim that they solved the linearized Eilenberger equation in the ferromagnetic region of an S/F heterostructure at arbitrary mean free path. In this comment we show that the solution suggested by the authors is not correct and explain details of the exact solution found by us in an earlier work several years ago (Phys. Rev. B 64, 134506, (2001).

Odd triplet superconductivity in a superconductor/ferromagnet structure with a spiral magnetic structure

We analyze a superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) system with a spiral magnetic structure in the ferromagnet F for a weak and strong exchange field. The long-range triplet component (LRTC) penetrating into the ferromagnet over a long distance is calculated for both cases. In the dirty limit (or weak ferromagnetism) we study the LRTC for conical ferromagnets. Its spatial dependence undergoes a qualitative change as a function of the cone angle θ. At small angles the LRTC decays in the ferromagnet exponentially in a monotonic way. If the angle θexceeds a certain value, the exponential decay of the LRTC is accompanied by oscillations with a period that depends on θ. This oscillatory behaviour leads to a similar dependence of the Josephson critical current in SFS junctions on the thickness of the F layer. In the case of a strong ferromagnet the LRTC decays over the length which is determined by the wave vector of the magnetic spiral and by the exchange field.

Oscillations of Induced Magnetization in Superconductor-Ferromagnet Heterostructures

We study a change in the spin magnetization of a superconductor-ferromagnet (SF) heterostructure, when temperature is lowered below the superconducting transition temperature. It is assumed that the SF interface is smooth on the atomic scale and the mean free path is not too short. Solving the Eilenberger equation we show that the spin magnetic moment induced in the superconductor is an oscillating sign-changing function of the product $hd$ of the exchange field $h$ and the thickness $d$ of the ferromagnet. Therefore the total spin magnetic moment of the system in the superconducting state can be not only smaller (screening) but also greater (anti-screening) than that in the normal state, in contrast with the case of highly disordered (diffusive) systems, where only screening is possible. This surprising effect is due to peculiar periodic properties of localized Andreev states in the system. It is most pronounced in systems with ideal ballistic transport (no bulk disorder in the samples, smooth ideally transparent interface), however these ideal conditions are not crucial for the very existence of the effect. We show that oscillations exist (although suppressed) even for arbitrary low interface transparency and in the presence of bulk disorder, provided that $h τ\gg 1$ ($τ$ -- mean free path). At low interface transparency we solve the problem for arbitrary strength of disorder and obtain oscillating magnetization in ballistic regime ($h τ\gg 1$) and nonoscillating magnetization in diffusive one ($h τ\ll 1$) as limiting cases of one formula.

Observation of Periodic pi-Phase Shifts in Ferromagnet-Superconductor Multilayers

We report complementary studies of the critical temperature and the critical current in ferromagnet (Ni) - superconductor (Nb) multilayers. The observed oscillatory behavior of both quantities upon variation of the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is found to be in good agreement with theory. The length scale of oscillations is identical for both quantities and is set by the magnetic length corresponding to an exchange field of 200 meV in Ni. The consistency between the behavior of the two quantities provides strong evidence for periodic pi- phase shifts in these devices.

Long-range odd triplet superconductivity in SF structures with Neel walls

We consider a multidomain superconductor/ferromagnet (SF) structure with an in-plane magnetization, assuming that the neighboring domains are separated by the Neel domain walls. We show that an odd triplet long-range component arises in the domain walls and spreads into domains over a long distance of the order ξ_T = \sqrt{D/2πT} (in the dirty limit). The density of states variation in the domains due to this component changes over distances of the order ξ_T and turns to zero in the middle of domains if the magnetization rotates in the same direction in all domain walls.

Superconducting phase coherent electron transport in proximity conical ferromagnets

We report superconducting phase-periodic conductance oscillations in ferromagnetic wires with interfaces to conventional superconductors. The ferromagnetic wires were made of Ho, a conical ferromagnet. The distance between the interfaces was much larger than the singlet superconducting penetration depth. We explain the observed oscillations as due to the long-range penetration of an unusual "helical" triplet component of the order parameter that is generated at the superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces and maintained by the intrinsic rotating magnetization of Ho.

Odd Triplet Superconductivity and Related Phenomena in Superconductor-Ferromagnet Structures

We consider novel unusual effects in superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) structures. In particular we analyze the triplet component (TC) of the condensate generated in those systems. This component is odd in frequency and even in the momentum, which makes it insensitive to non-magnetic impurities. If the exchange field is not homogeneous in the system the triplet component is not destroyed even by a strong exchange field and can penetrate the ferromagnet over long distances. Some other effects considered here and caused by the proximity effect are: enhancement of the Josephson current due to the presence of the ferromagnet, induction of a magnetic moment in superconductors resulting in a screening of the magnetic moment, formation of periodic magnetic structures due to the influence of the superconductor, etc. We compare the theoretical predictions with existing experiments.

Long-range thermoelectric effects in mesoscopic superconductor-normal metal structures

We consider a mesoscopic four-terminal superconductor/normal metal (S/N) structure in the presence of a temperature gradient along the N wire. A thermoemf arises in this system even in the absence of the thermoelectric quasiparticle current if the phase difference between the superconductors is not zero. We show that the thermoemf is not small in the case of a negligible Josephson coupling between two superconductors. It is also shown that the thermoelectric voltage has two maxima: one at a low temperature and another at a temperature close to the critical temperature. The obtained temperature dependence of the thermoemf describes qualitatively experimental data.

Alternative mechanism of the sign-reversal effect in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions

We consider a simple model of a multidomain superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) Josephson junction. Sign-alternating magnetization $M$ in domains leads to a spatial modulation of the phase difference $ϕ(x)$. Due to this modulation the Josephson critical current $I_{c}$ may have a different sign depending on the ratio of the magnetic flux in a domain, 4$πMa(2d_{F}),$ to the magnetic flux quantum. This phase modulation, but not a nonmonotonic dependence of the local critical current density $j_{c}$, may be the reason for oscillations of the current $I_{c}$ {\bf \}as a function of the F layer thickness $2d_{F} $ or temperature, observed in experiments.

Induced Ferromagnetism due to Superconductivity in Superconductor-Ferromagnet structures

We consider a superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) structure and assume that above the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ the magnetic moment exists only in F. {In a simple model of the ferromagnet (the exchange field is of the ferromagnetic type for all energies)}we show by an explicit calculation that below $T_{c}$ the magnetic moment may penetrate the superconductor. {In this model} its direction in S is opposite {to the magnetization of free electrons} in the ferromagnet. The magnetization spreads over a large distance which is of the order of the superconducting coherence length $ξ_{S}$ and can much exceed the ferromagnet film thickness. At the same time the magnetic moment in the ferromagnet is reduced. This inverse proximity effect may explain the reduction in magnetization observed in recent experiments and may lead to a strong interaction between the ferromagnetic layers in F/S/F structures.

Spin screening of magnetic moments in superconductors

We consider ferromagnetic particles embedded into a superconductor and study the screening of their magnetic moments by the spins of the Cooper pairs in the superconductor. It is shown that a magnetic moment opposite to the one of the ferromagnetic particle is induced in the superconductor. In the case of a small itinerant ferromagnet grain and low temperatures the full screening of the magnetic moment takes place, \textit{% i.e} the absolute value of the total magnetic moment induced in the superconductor is equal to the one of the ferromagnetic particle. In type II superconductors the proposed screening by spins of the conduction electrons can be much stronger than the conventional screening by Meissner currents.

Prospects for time reversal invariance studies with the use of five-fold correlation

Advantages of investigation of time reversal invariance violation with the use of three-fold (P,T-odd) and five-fold (P-even,T-odd) correlations in the interaction of resonance neutrons with nuclei are briefly considered. Possible enhancements of T-odd effects in both cases are discussed. It is shown that the study of five-fold correlation is a perspective way to test time reversal invariance. Prospects to realize dynamical nuclear alignment method for measurements of five-fold correlation are described.

Residual Resistance in a 2DES: A Phenomenological Approach

We consider a simple phenomenological model of a semiconductor with absolute negative conductance in a magnetic field. We find the form of the domains of the electric field and current which arise as a result of an instability of a uniform state. We show that in both Corbino disc and Hall bar samples the residual conductance and resistance are negative and exponentially small; they decrease exponentially with increasing length L_{x,y}.

Manifestation of triplet superconductivity in superconductor-ferromagnet structures

We study proximity effects in a multilayered superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) structure with arbitrary relative directions of the magnetization ${\bf M}$. If the magnetizations of different layers are collinear the superconducting condensate function induced in the F layers has only a singlet component and a triplet one with a zero projection of the total magnetic moment of the Cooper pairs on the ${\bf M}$ direction. In this case the condensate penetrates the F layers over a short length $ξ_J$ determined by the exchange energy $J$. If the magnetizations ${\bf M}$ are not collinear the triplet component has, in addition to the zero projection, the projections $\pm1$. The latter component is even in the momentum, odd in the Matsubara frequency and penetrates the F layers over a long distance that increases with decreasing temperature and does not depend on $J$ (spin-orbit interaction limits this length). If the thickness of the F layers is much larger than $ξ_J$, the Josephson coupling between neighboring S layers is provided only by the triplet component, so that a new type of superconductivity arises in the transverse direction of the structure. The Josephson critical current is positive (negative) for the case of a positive (negative) chirality of the vector ${\bf M}$. We demonstrate that this type of the triplet condensate can be detected also by measuring the density of states in F/S/F structures.

Current-voltage characteristics and the zero-resistance state in a 2DEG

We study the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) with microwave induced negative conductance in a magnetic field. We show that due to the Hall effect, strictly speaking there is no distinction between N- and S-shaped CVCs. Instead the observed CVC depends on the experimental setup with, e.g., an N-shaped CVC in a Corbino disc geometry corresponding to an S-shaped CVC in a Hall bar geometry in a strong magnetic field. We argue that instabilities of homogeneous states in regions of negative differential conductivity lead to the observation of zero resistance in Hall bars and zero conductance in Corbino discs and we discuss the structure of current and electric field domains.
