Proximity-induced transport in hybrid mesoscopic normal-superconducting metal structures

Using an approach based on quasiclassical Green's functions we present a theoretical study of transport in mesoscopic S/N structures in the diffusive limit. The subgap conductance in S/N structures with barriers (zero bias and finite bias anomalies) are discused. We also analyse the temperature dependence of the conductance variation $δS(T)$ for a Andreev interferometer. We show that besides the well know low temperature maximum a second maximum near $T_c$ may appear. We present the results of studies on the Josephson effect in 4 terminal S/N/S contacts and on the possible sign reversal of the Josephson critical current.

Anomalous transport in normal-superconducting and ferromagnetic-superconducting nanostructures

We have calculated the temperature dependence of the conductance variation ($δS(T)$) of mesoscopic superconductor normal metal(S/N) structures, in the diffusive regime, analysing both weak and strong proximity effects. We show that in the case of a weak proximity effect there are two peaks in the dependence of $δS(T)$ on temperature. One of them (known from previous studies) corresponds to a temperature $T_1$ of order of the Thouless energy ($ε_{Th}$), and another, newly predicted maximum, occurs at a temperature $T_2$ where the energy gap in the superconductor $Δ(T_2)$ is of order $ε_{Th}$. In the limit $L_ϕ<L$ the temperature $T_1$ is determined by $D \hbar /L^2_ϕ$ ($L_ϕ$ is the phase breaking length), and not $ε_{Th}$. We have also calculated the voltage dependence $ δS(V)$ for a S/F structure (F is a ferromagnet) and predict non-monotonic behaviour at voltages of order the Zeeman splitting.

Sub-gap conductance in ferromagnetic-superconducting mesoscopic structures

We study the sub-gap conductance of a ferromagnetic mesoscopic region attached to a ferromagnetic and a superconducting electrode by means of tunnel junctions. In the absence of the exchange field, the ratio $r= γ/ ε_T$ of the two tunnel junction resistances determines the behaviour of the sub-gap conductance which possesses a zero-bias peak for $r\gg 1$ and for $r\ll 1$ a peak at finite voltage. We show that the inclusion of the exchange field leads to a peak splitting for $r\ll 1$, while it shifts the zero-bias anomaly to finite voltages for $r\gg 1$.

Dynamics of Fluxon Lattice in Two Coupled Josephson Junctions

We study theoretically the dynamics of a fluxon Lattice (FL) in two coupled Josephson junctions. We show that when the velocity of the moving FL exceeds certain values $(V_{a,b})$, sharp resonances arise in the system which are related to the excitation of the optical and acoustic collective modes. In the interval $(V_a, V_b)$ a reconstruction of the FL occurs. We also establish that one can excite localized nonlinear distortions (dislocations) which may propagate through the FL and carry an arbitrary magnetic flux.

Conductance suppression in normal metal-superconductor mesoscopic strucutres

Using a scattering matrix approach and quasiclassical Green's function technique, we calculate the conductance of the S/N system (see Fig.1). We establish that the difference between the superconducting and normal state conductance $(δG = G_s - G_n)$ is negative for large S/N interface resistances $(R_{S/N})$ and changes sign with decreasing $R_{S/N}$. The comparision of the result obtained with experimental data is carried out.

Collective oscillations in superconductors revisited

In the recent paper Ohashi and Takada (OT) made statements that in the clean limit considered by us (AV) in 1975, weakly damped collective oscillations in superconductors do not exist due to the Landau damping and their spectrum differs from that obtained in AV. In this Comment we would like to note that these statements arise as a result of a misunderstanding of the term "clean" case. OT considered the limit of frequencies larger, than elastic scattering rate, meanwhile AV obtained weakly damped mode in the case when temperature is larger than scattering rate, the frequencies being smaller (!) than elastic scattering rate. All these problems were discussed in our review article in 1979 which was, presumably, unknown to OT.

Method of quasiclassical Green's functions in the theory of transport phenomena in superconducting mesoscopic structures

A short introduction to the theory of matrix quasiclassical Green's functions is given and possible applications of this theory to transport properties of mesoscopic superconducting-normal metal (S/N) structures are considered. We discuss a simplified version of these equations in the diffusive regime and in the case of a weak proximity effect. These equations are used for the calculation of the conductance of different S/N structures. Long-range, phase-coherent effects are studied in a 4-terminal S/N/S structures under conditions when the Josephson critical current is negligible. It is shown that the Josephson effects may be observed in this system if an additional current flows through the N electrode.

Comment on "Density of states and reflectionless tunneling in an NS junction with a barrier

In a recent paper Schechter, Imry and Levinson (cond-mat/9709248) \cite{r1} analysed the density-of-states (DOS) and the conductance of a S/N junction with a barrier. They showed that the DOS in the N conductor near the barrier is strongly affected by the superconductor if the energy $ε$ is small: $l_{n} \sqrt{ε/D}{\ll} Γ{\ll} 1$, where $l_{n}$ is the mean free path, $D$ is the diffusion constant, and $Γ$ is the barrier transmittance. We would like to note that this problem was analysed in several papers with the use of different approaches. In particular, the author has calculated the DOS and the conductance of S/N structures with a barrier using quasiclassical matrix Green's function technique well developed in the theory of superconductivity \cite{r2}. It was shown that in an 1-d S/N structure a pseudogap appears in the N conductor near the S/N interface, and the DOS approaches it's normal value at energies $ε$ exceeding an energy $ε_{N}$ related to the interface transmittance; here $ε_{N}=D/(2 R_{b} σ)^{2}$, $R_{b}$ is the interface resistance per unit area, and $σ$ is the specific conductivity of the N conductor. It was shown that peculiarities in the DOS at small energies lead to a subgap conductance at zero temperature. This subgap conductance is caused by a component of the current which is known in the theory of the Josephson effect as the interference current. Therefore, the results for the DOS and the conductance in Ref \cite{r1} are similar to the ones obtained earlier, but their interpretation of the subgap conductance differs from that given in Ref.\cite{r2} because they use another approach for the calculation of the conductance .

Fluctuation Conductivity in Mesoscopic Superconductor - Normal Metal Contacts

The fluctuation conduction of NSN and SNS contacts above T_c are analyzed. For NSN contacts, both Aslamazov-Larkin and Maki- Thompson corrections to the conduction are found to be of the same order and diverge for T_c^* < T_c according to the law (T - T_c^*)^-1. For SNS contacts, the Aslamazov - Larkin correction vanishes, while the Maki - Thompson correction is essential for contacts shorter than the phase-breaking length.

Boundary conditions for quasiclassical equations in the theory of superconductivity

In this paper we derive effective boundary conditions connecting the quasiclassical Green's function through tunnel barriers in superconducting - normal hybrid (S-N or S-S') structures in the dirty limit. Our work extends previous treatments confined to the small transparency limit. This is achieved by an expansion in the small parameter $r^{-1}=T/2(1-T)$ where T is the transparency of the barrier. We calculate the next term in the $r^{-1}$ expansion for both the normal and the superconducting case. In both cases this involves the solution of an integral equation, which we obtain numerically. While in the normal case our treatment only leads to a quantitative change in the barrier resistance $R_b$, in the superconductor case, qualitative different boundary conditions are derived. To illustrate the physical consequences of the modified boundary conditions, we calculate the Josephson current and show that the next term in the $r^{-1}$ expansion gives rise to the second harmonic in the current-phase relation.

Re-entrance of the metallic conductance in a mesoscopic proximity superconductor

We present an experimental study of the diffusive transport in a normal metal near a superconducting interface, showing the re-entrance of the metallic conductance at very low temperature. This new mesoscopic regime comes in when the thermal coherence length of the electron pairs exceeds the sample size. This re-entrance is suppressed by a bias voltage given by the Thouless energy and can be strongly enhanced by an Aharonov Bohm flux. Experimental results are well described by the linearized quasiclassical theory.

Resistive transport in a mesoscopic proximity superconductor

We review transport measurements in a normal metal (N) in contact with one or two superconducting (S) islands. From the experiment, we distinguish the Josephson coupling, the mesoscopic fluctuations and the proximity effect. In a loop-shaped N conductor, we observe large h/2e-periodic magnetoresistance oscillations that decay with temperature T with a 1/T power-law. This behaviour is the signature of the long-range coherence of the low-energy electron pairs induced by the Andreev reflection at the S interface. At temperature and voltage below the Thouless energy $\hbar D / L^2$, we observe the re-entrance of the metallic resistance. Experimental results agree with the linearized quasiclassical theory.

Proximity and Josephson effects in superconductor - two dimensional electron gas planar junctions

The DC Josephson effect is theoretically studied in a planar junction in which a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) infinite in lateral directions is in contact with two superconducting electrodes placed on top of the 2DEG. An energy gap in the excitation spectrum is created in the 2DEG due to the proximity effect. It is shown that under certain conditions, the region of the 2DEG underneath the superconductors is analogous to a superconducting region with an order parameter $\varepsilon_g\exp(iϕ)$\/, where $\varepsilon_g~(\varepsilon_g<Δ)$\/ depends on the interface transmittance and the Fermi velocity mismatch between the superconductors and the 2DEG.
