Bulk diffusion of 1D exclusion process with bond disorder

Given a doubly infinite sequence of positive numbers {c_k: k in Z} satisfying a LLN with limit A, we consider the nearest-neighbor simple exclusion process on Z where c_k is the probability rate of jumps between k and k+1. If A is infinite we require an additional minor technical condition. By extending a method developed by K. Nagy, we show that the diffusively rescaled process has hydrodynamic behavior described by the heat equation with diffusion constant 1/A. In particular, the process has diffusive behavior for finite A and subdiffusive behavior for infinite A.

Invariance principle for Mott variable range hopping and other walks on point processes

We consider a random walk on a homogeneous Poisson point process with energy marks. The jump rates decay exponentially in the A-power of the jump length and depend on the energy marks via a Boltzmann--like factor. The case A=1 corresponds to the phonon-induced Mott variable range hopping in disordered solids in the regime of strong Anderson localization. We prove that for almost every realization of the marked process, the diffusively rescaled random walk, with arbitrary start point, converges to a Brownian motion whose diffusion matrix is positive definite, and independent of the environment. Finally, we extend the above result to other point processes including diluted lattices.

Hydrodynamic limit of symmetric exclusion processes in inhomogeneous media

In \cite{J} M. Jara has presented a method, reducing the proof of the hydrodynamic limit of symmetric exclusion processes to an homogenization problem, as unified approach to recent works on the field as \cite{N}, \cite{F1}, \cite{F2} and \cite{FJL}. Although not stated in \cite{J}, the reduction of the hydrodynamic limit to an homogenization problem was already obtained (in a different way) in \cite{N}, \cite{F1}. This alternative and very simple relation between the two problems goes back to an idea of K.\ Nagy \cite{N}, is stated in \cite{F1}[Section B] for exclusion processes on $\bbZ^d$ and, as stressed in \cite{F2}, is completely general. The above relation has been applied to \cite{N}, \cite{F1}, \cite{F2} and \cite{FJL} and could be applied to other symmetric exclusion processes, mentioned in \cite{J}. In this short note we briefly recall this unified approach in a complete general setting. Finally, we recall how the homogenization problem has been solved in the above previous works.

Diffusivity in one-dimensional generalized Mott variable-range hopping models

We consider random walks in a random environment which are generalized versions of well-known effective models for Mott variable-range hopping. We study the homogenized diffusion constant of the random walk in the one-dimensional case. We prove various estimates on the low-temperature behavior which confirm and extend previous work by physicists.

Recurrence and transience for long-range reversible random walks on a random point process

We consider reversible random walks in random environment obtained from symmetric long--range jump rates on a random point process. We prove almost sure transience and recurrence results under suitable assumptions on the point process and the jump rate function. For recurrent models we obtain almost sure estimates on effective resistances in finite boxes. For transient models we construct explicit fluxes with finite energy on the associated electrical network.

Random walks and exclusion processes among random conductances on random infinite clusters: homogenization and hydrodynamic limit

We consider a stationary and ergodic random field {ω(b)} parameterized by the family of bonds b in Z^d, d>1. The random variable ω(b) is thought of as the conductance of bond b and it ranges in a finite interval [0,c_0]. Assuming that the set of bonds with positive conductance has a unique infinite cluster C, we prove homogenization results for the random walk among random conductances on C. As a byproduct, applying the general criterion of \cite{F} leading to the hydrodynamic limit of exclusion processes with bond-dependent transition rates, for almost all realizations of the environment we prove the hydrodynamic limit of simple exclusion processes among random conductances on C. The hydrodynamic equation is given by a heat equation whose diffusion matrix does not depend on the environment. We do not require any ellipticity condition. As special case, C can be the infinite cluster of supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation.

Averaging and large deviation principles for fully-coupled piecewise deterministic Markov processes and applications to molecular motors

We consider Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes (PDMPs) with a finite set of discrete states. In the regime of fast jumps between discrete states, we prove a law of large number and a large deviation principle. In the regime of fast and slow jumps, we analyze a coarse-grained process associated to the original one and prove its convergence to a new PDMP with effective force fields and jump rates. In all the above cases, the continuous variables evolve slowly according to ODEs. Finally, we discuss some applications related to the mechanochemical cycle of macromolecules, including strained--dependent power--stroke molecular motors. Our analysis covers the case of fully--coupled slow and fast motions.

Hydrodynamic behavior of one dimensional subdiffusive exclusion processes with random conductances

Consider a system of particles performing nearest neighbor random walks on the lattice $\ZZ$ under hard--core interaction. The rate for a jump over a given bond is direction--independent and the inverse of the jump rates are i.i.d. random variables belonging to the domain of attraction of an $\a$--stable law, $0<\a<1$. This exclusion process models conduction in strongly disordered one-dimensional media. We prove that, when varying over the disorder and for a suitable slowly varying function $L$, under the super-diffusive time scaling $N^{1 + 1/α}L(N)$, the density profile evolves as the solution of the random equation $\partial_t ρ= \mf L_W ρ$, where $\mf L_W$ is the generalized second-order differential operator $\frac d{du} \frac d{dW}$ in which $W$ is a double sided $\a$--stable subordinator. This result follows from a quenched hydrodynamic limit in the case that the i.i.d. jump rates are replaced by a suitable array $\{ξ_{N,x} : x\in\bb Z\}$ having same distribution and fulfilling an a.s. invariance principle. We also prove a law of large numbers for a tagged particle.

The alternating marked point process of h-slopes of the drifted Brownian motion

We show that the slopes between h-extrema of the drifted 1D Brownian motion form a stationary alternating marked point process, extending the result of J. Neveu and J. Pitman for the non drifted case. Our analysis covers the results on the statistics of h-extrema obtained by P. Le Doussal, C. Monthus and D. Fisher via a Renormalization Group analysis and gives a complete description of the slope between h-extrema covering the origin by means of the Palm--Khinchin theory. Moreover, we analyze the behavior of the Brownian motion near its h-extrema.

Mott law as upper bound for a random walk in a random environment

We consider a random walk on the support of an ergodic simple point process on R^d, d>1, furnished with independent energy marks. The jump rates of the random walk decay exponentially in the jump length and depend on the energy marks via a Boltzmann-type factor. This is an effective model for the phonon-induced hopping of electrons in disordered solids in the regime of strong Anderson localization. Under mild assumptions on the point process we prove an upper bound of the asymptotic diffusion matrix of the random walk in agreement with Mott law. A lower bound in agreement with Mott law was proved in \cite{FSS}.

Mott law as lower bound for a random walk in a random environment

We consider a random walk on the support of a stationary simple point process on $R^d$, $d\geq 2$ which satisfies a mixing condition w.r.t.the translations or has a strictly positive density uniformly on large enough cubes. Furthermore the point process is furnished with independent random bounded energy marks. The transition rates of the random walk decay exponentially in the jump distances and depend on the energies through a factor of the Boltzmann-type. This is an effective model for the phonon-induced hopping of electrons in disordered solids within the regime of strong Anderson localization. We show that the rescaled random walk converges to a Brownian motion whose diffusion coefficient is bounded below by Mott's law for the variable range hopping conductivity at zero frequency. The proof of the lower bound involves estimates for the supercritical regime of an associated site percolation problem.

Spectral characterisation of ageing: the REM-like trap model

We review the ageing phenomenon in the context of simplest trap model, Bouchaud's REM-like trap model from a spectral theoretic point of view. We show that the generator of the dynamics of this model can be diagonalised exactly. Using this result, we derive closed expressions for correlation functions in terms of complex contour integrals that permit an easy investigation into their large time asymptotics in the thermodynamic limit. We also give a `grand canonical' representation of the model in terms of the Markov process on a Poisson point process . In this context we analyse the dynamics on various time scales.

Hydrodynamic limit of a disordered lattice gas

We consider a model of lattice gas dynamics in the d-dimensional cubic lattice in the presence of disorder. If the particle interaction is only mutual exclusion and if the disorder field is given by i.i.d. bounded random variables, we prove the almost sure existence of the hydrodynamical limit in dimension d>2. The limit equation is a non linear diffusion equation with diffusion matrix characterized by a variational principle.
