Influence of the multiband sign changing superconductivity on the vortex cores and on vortex pinning in the new stoichiometric high Tc CaKFe4As4

We study the superconducting density of states and vortex lattice of single crystals of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). This material has a critical temperature of $T_c= 35\,$ K, which is one of the highest among stoichiometric iron based superconductors (FeBSC) and is comparable to $T_c$ found near optimal doping in other FeBSC. Using quasi-particle interference we identify the hole sheets around the zone center and find that two superconducting gaps open in these sheets. The scattering centers are small defects that can be localized in the surface topography and just produce quasiparticle interference, without suppressing the superconducting order parameter. This shows that sign inversion is not within hole bands, but between hole and the electron bands. Vortex core bound states show electron-hole asymmetric bound states due to proximity of the top of one of the hole bands to the Fermi level $E_F$. This places CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ in a similar situation as FeSe or related materials, with a superconducting gap $Δ$ just a few times smaller than $E_F$. On the other hand, we also identify locations showing strong suppression of the superconducting order parameter. Their size is of order of the vortex core size and vortices are pinned at these locations, leading to a disordered vortex lattice.

Subsurface bending and reorientation of tilted vortex lattices in the bulk due to Coulomb-like repulsion at the surface

We study vortex lattices (VLs) in superconducting weak-pinning platelet-like crystals of $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd in tilted fields with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope. We show that vortices exit the sample perpendicular to the surface and are thus bent beneath the surface. The structure and orientation of tilted VL in the bulk are, for large tilt angles, strongly affected by Coulomb-type intervortex repulsion at the surface due to stray fields.

Nodeless multiband superconductivity in stoichiometric single crystalline CaKFe$_4$As$_4$

Measurements of the London penetration depth and tunneling conductance in single crystals of the recently discovered stoicheometric, iron - based superconductor, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ (CaK1144) show nodeless, two effective gap superconductivity with a larger gap of about 6-9 meV and a smaller gap of about 1-4 meV. Having a critical temperature, $T_{c,onset}\approx$35.8 K, this material behaves similar to slightly overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (e.g. $x=$0.54, $T_c \approx$ 34 K)---a known multigap $s_{\pm}$ superconductor. We conclude that the superconducting behavior of stoichiometric CaK1144 demonstrates that two-gap $s_{\pm}$ superconductivity is an essential property of high temperature superconductivity in iron - based superconductors, independent of the degree of substitutional disorder.

Field dependence of the vortex core size probed by STM

We study the spatial distribution of the density of states (DOS) at zero bias N(r) in the mixed state of single and multigap superconductors. We provide an analytic expression for N(r) based on deGennes' relation between DOS and the order parameter that reproduces well Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) data in several superconducting materials. In the single gap superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd, we find that N(r) is governed by a length scale $ξ_H=\sqrt{ϕ_0/2πH}$, which decreases in rising fields. The vortex core size $\cal C$, defined via the slope of the order parameter at the vortex center, $\cal C$ $\propto (d Δ/dr |_{r \to 0})^{-1}$, differs from $ξ_H$ by a material dependent numerical factor. For two gap superconductors 2H-NbSe$_{1.8}$S$_{0.2}$ and 2H-NbS$_2$, we find that $\cal C$ is field independent and has the same value for both bands. We conclude that, independently of the magnetic field induced variation of the order parameter values in both bands, the spatial variation of the order parameter close to the vortex core is the same for all bands.

Magnetic field dependence of the density of states in the multiband superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd

We present very low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on single crystalline samples of the superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd. We find a single fully isotropic superconducting gap. However, the magnetic field dependence of the intervortex density of states is higher than the one expected in a single gap superconductor, and the hexagonal vortex lattice is locked to the square atomic lattice. Such increase in the intervortex density of states and vortex lattice locking have been found in superconductors with multiple superconducting gaps and anisotropic Fermi surfaces. We compare the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ obtained in our sample with previous measurements and explain available data within multiband supercondutivity. We propose that $β$-Bi$_2$Pd is a single gap multiband superconductor. We anticipate that single gap multiband superconductivity can occur in other compounds with complex Fermi surfaces.

Low temperature magnetic transitions of single crystal HoBi

We present resistivity, specific heat and magnetization measurements in high quality single crystals of HoBi, with a residual resistivity ratio of 126. We find, from the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization, an antiferromagnetic transition at 5.7 K, which evolves, under magnetic fields, into a series of up to five metamagnetic phases.

Low-temperature specific heat of graphite and CeSb2: Validation of a quasi-adiabatic continuous method

We present the application of a fast quasi-adiabatic continuous method to the measurement of specific heat at 4He temperatures, which can be used for the study of a wide range of materials. The technique can be performed in the same configuration used for the relaxation method, as the typical time constants between calorimetric cell and thermal sink at 4.2 K are chosen to be of the order of tau~30 s. The accuracy in the absolute values have been tested by comparing them to relaxation-method results obtained in the same samples (performed in situ using the same set-up), with a deviation between the absolute values < 3% in the whole temperature range. This new version of the continuous calorimetric method at low temperatures allows us to completely characterize and measure a sample within a few hours with a high density of data points, whereas when employing other methods we typically need a few days. An exhaustive study has been performed for reproducibility to be tested. In the present work, we have applied this method to two different substances: CeSb2, which exhibits three magnetic transitions at 15.5 K, 11.7 K and 9.5 K, and graphite, both highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and natural crystals. Our results on these graphites are discussed in comparison with previous published data on different kinds of graphite samples.
