Direct observation of cycloidal spin modulation and field-induced transition in Néel-type skyrmion-hosting VOSe$_2$O$_5$

We investigate the spin rotational structure of magnetic skyrmions in a tetragonal polar magnet VOSe2O5 via polarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Spin polarization analysis of the scattered neutrons provides consistent evidence for the cycloidal spin modulation in all the incommensurate phases at zero and non-zero magnetic field along the c axis, including the triangular skyrmion-lattice phase. In the vicinity of the skyrmion phase, we performed extensive SANS measurements to unravel a field-induced incommensurate phase (IC-2 state). We discuss the possibility of anisotropic double-q state as an alternative spin structure to provisional square skyrmion-lattice state.

Anisometric mesoscale nuclear and magnetic texture in sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets

By means of temperature and wavelength-dependent small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on sintered isotropic and textured Nd-Fe-B magnets we provide evidence for the existence of an anisometric structure in the microstructure of the textured magnets. This conclusion is reached by observing a characteristic cross-shaped angular anisotropy in the total unpolarized SANS cross section at temperatures well above the Curie temperature. Comparison of the experimental SANS data to a microstructural model based on the superquadrics form factor allows us to estimate the shape and lower bounds for the size of the structure. Subtraction of the scattering cross section in the paramagnetic regime from data taken at room temperature provides the magnetic SANS cross section. Surprisingly, the anisotropy of the magnetic scattering is very similar to the nuclear SANS signal, suggesting that the nuclear structure is decorated by the magnetic moments via spin-orbit coupling. Based on the computation of the two-dimensional correlation function we estimate lower bounds for the longitudinal and transversal magnetic correlation lengths.

Hidden quantum phase transition in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge: evidence brought by small-angle neutron scattering

The magnetic system of the Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge solid solution is ordered in a spiral spin structure in the whole concentration range of $x \in [0 ÷1]$. The close inspection of the small-angle neutron scattering data reveals the quantum phase transition from the long-range ordered (LRO) to short range ordered (SRO) helical structure upon increase of Fe-concentration at $x \in [0.25 ÷0.4]$. The SRO of the helical structure is identified as a Lorentzian contribution, while LRO is associated with the Gaussian contribution into the scattering profile function. The scenario of the quantum phase transition with $x$ as a driving parameter is similar to the thermal phase transition in pure MnGe. The quantum nature of the SRO is proved by the temperature independent correlation length of the helical structure at low and intermediate temperature ranges with remarkable decrease above certain temperature $T_Q$. We suggest the $x$-dependent modification of the effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida exchange interaction within the Heisenberg model of magnetism to explain the quantum critical regime in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge.
