Thickness dependence of magnetization reversal and magnetostriction in FeGa thin films

Among the magnetostrictive alloys the one formed of iron and gallium (called "Galfenol" from its U.S. Office of Naval Research discoverers in the late 90's) is attractive for its low hysteresis, good tensile stress, good machinability and its rare-earth free composition. One of its applications is its association with a piezoelectric material to form a extrinsic multiferroic composite as an alternative to the rare room temperature intrinsic multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$. This study focuses on thin Fe$_{0.81}$Ga$_{0.19}$ films of thickness 5, 10, 20 and 60 nm deposited by sputtering onto glass substrates. Magnetization reversal study reveals a well-defined symmetry with two principal directions independent of the thickness. The magnetic signature of this magnetic anisotropy decreases with increasing FeGa thickness due to an increase of the non-preferential polycrystalline arrangement, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. Thus when magnetic field is applied along these specific directions, magnetization reversal is mainly coherent for the thinnest sample as seen from the transverse magnetization cycles. Magnetostriction coefficient reaches 20 ppm for the 5 nm film and decreases for thicker samples, where polycrystalline part with non-preferential orientation prevails.

Effect of the metal-to-wire ratio on the high-frequency magnetoimpedance of glass-coated CoFeBSi amorphous microwires

High frequency [1-500 MHz] measurements of the magnetoimpedance (MI) of glass-coated Co$_{69.4}$Fe$_{3.7}$B$_{15.9}$Si$_{11}$ microwires are carried out with various metal-to-wire diameter ratios. A twin-peak, anhysteretic behaviour is observed as a function of magnetic field. A maximum in the normalized impedance, $ΔZ$/$Z$, appears at different values of the frequency $f$, 125, 140 and 85 MHz with the corresponding diameter ratio $p$ = 0.80, 0.55 and 0.32. We describe the measurement technique and interpret our results with a thermodynamic model that leads to a clearer view of the effects of $p$ on the maximum value of MI and the anisotropy field. The behavior of the real and imaginary components of impedance is also investigated; they display a resonance that becomes a function of the DC field $H_{DC}$ for values larger or equal to $H_{K}$ the circumferential anisotropy field for each $p $ value. These results are interpreted in terms of a rotation model of the outer shell magnetization.

Metal-to-glass ratio and the Magneto-Impedance of glass-covered CoFeBSi microwires at high frequencies

Giant magnetoimpedance in Vitrovac amorphous ribbons over [0.3-400 MHz] frequency range

Giant magneto impedance (GMI) effect for as-cast Vitrovac$^{\textrm{\scriptsize\textregistered}}$ amorphous ribbons (Vacuumschmelze, Germany) in two configurations (parallel and normal to the ribbon axis) is studied over the frequency range [0.3-400 MHz] and under static magnetic fields -160 Oe $< H_{dc} < $+160 Oe. A variety of peak features and GMI ratio values, falling within a small field range, are observed and discussed.

Theoretical and Experimental Approach to Spin Dynamics in Thin Magnetic Films

The Landau-Lifshitz (L-L) equation describing the time dependence of the magnetisation vector is numerically integrated fully without any simplifying assumptions in the time domain and the magnetisation time series obtained is Fourier transformed (FFT) to yield the permeability spectrum up to 10 GHz. The non linear results are compared to the experimental results obtained on magnetic amorphous thin films of Co-Zr, Co-Zr-Re. We analyse our results with the frequency response obtained directly from the Landau-Lifshitz equation as well as with the second order Gilbert frequency response.

Combustion Models in Finance

Combustion reaction kinetics models are used for the description of a special class of bursty Financial Time Series. The small number of parameters they depend upon enable financial analysts to predict the time as well as the magnitude of the jump of the value of the portfolio. Several Financial Time Series are analysed within this framework and applications are given.
