Study of the partial wave structure of $π^0η$ photoproduction on protons

Analysis of the partial wave structure of gamma p --> pi0 eta p reaction is presented in the energy region from threshold up to the total center of mass energy W = 1.9 GeV. Angular distributions measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS hermetic detector system at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are expanded in terms of spherical harmonics. The relation of the extracted moments to the partial wave structure of the reaction amplitude is discussed and compared with predictions from model calculations.

Coherent π0η photoproduction on s-shell nuclei

Coherent photoproduction of π0η on the deuteron, He3 and He4 nuclei is considered in the energy region from threshold to the lab photon energy 1.2 GeV. The transition amplitude is derived using impulse approximation. Effects of pion absorption are included by means of the Fernbach-Serber-Taylor model. Interaction of the produced η-mesons with the recoiled nucleus is taken into account for the reactions on d and He3. The corresponding ηd and ηHe3 scattering amplitudes are obtained as solutions of the few-body equations for ηNN and η-3N systems. Impact of this interaction on the differential cross section in the region of small relative η-nuclear momenta is discussed.

Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry $I^{\odot}$ in the photoproduction of $π^0$-pairs off the proton and off the neutron

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of neutral pion pairs in the reactions $\vecγp\rightarrow pπ^0π^0$ and $\vecγd\rightarrow (n)pπ^0π^0$, $\vecγd\rightarrow (p)nπ^0π^0$ off free protons and off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons and tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Decay photons from the $π^0$ mesons, recoil protons, and recoil neutrons were detected in the 4$π$ covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. After kinematic reconstruction of the final state, excellent agreement was found between the results for free and quasi-free protons. This demonstrates that the free-nucleon behavior of such observables can be extracted from measurements with quasi-free nucleons, which is the only possibility for the neutron. Contrary to expectations, the measured asymmetries are very similar for reactions off protons and neutrons. The results are compared to the predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID reaction model and (for the proton) also to the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel analysis.

Double pion photoproduction off nuclei - are there effects beyond final-state interaction?

Photoproduction of $π^{0}π^{0}$ and $π^{0}π^{\pm}$ pairs from nuclei has been measured over a wide mass range ($^2$H, $^{7}$Li, $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{\rm nat}$Pb) for photon energies from threshold to 600 MeV. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and a 4$π$ electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. A shift of the pion-pion invariant mass spectra for heavy nuclei to small invariant masses has been observed for $π^0$ pairs but also for the mixed-charge pairs. The precise results allow for the first time a model-independent analysis of the influence of pion final-state interactions. The corresponding effects are found to be large and must be carefully considered in the search for possible in-medium modifications of the $σ$-meson. Results from a transport model calculation reproduce the shape of the invariant-mass distributions for the mixed-charge pairs better than for the neutral pairs, but also for the latter differences between model results and experiment are not large, leaving not much room for $σ$-in-medium modification.

A Truncated partial wave analysis of a complete experiment for photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon

A truncated partial wave analysis for the photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon is discussed with respect to the determination of a complete set of observables. For the selection of such a set we have applied a criterion previously developed for photo- and electrodisintegration of a deuteron, which allows one to find a 'minimal' set of observables for determining the partial wave amplitudes up to possible discrete ambiguities. The question of resolving the remaining ambiguities by invoking additional observables is discussed for the simplest case, when the partial wave expansion is truncated at the lowest total angular momentum of the final state $J_{max}=1/2$. The resulting 'fully' complete set, allowing an unambiguous determination of the partial wave amplitudes, is presented.

Coherent photoproduction of pi^0- and eta-mesons off 7Li

Coherent photoproduction of $π^0$-mesons from threshold ($E_{th} \approx$ 136 MeV) throughout the $Δ$-resonance region and of $η$-mesons close to the production threshold ($E_{th} \approx$ 570 MeV for $η$) has been measured for $^7$Li nuclei. The experiment was performed using the tagged-photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4$π$ solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeter. The reactions were identified by a combined invariant-mass and missing-energy analysis. A comparison of the pion data to plane-wave impulse modelling tests the nuclear mass form factor. So far coherent $η$-production had been only identified for the lightest nuclear systems ($^2$H and $^3$He). For $^3$He a large enhancement of the cross section above plane-wave approximations had been reported, indicating the formation of a quasi-bound state. The present Li-data for $η$-production agree with a plane-wave approximation. Contrary to $^3$He, neither a threshold enhancement of the total cross section nor a deviation of the angular distributions from the expected form-factor dependence were observed.

Study of the gamma p --> pi0 pi0 p reaction with the Crystal Ball/TAPS at the Mainz

The gamma p --> pi0 pi0 p reaction has been measured from threshold to 1.4 GeV using the Crystal Ball and TAPS photon spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron. The experimental results include total and differential cross sections as well as specific angular distributions, which were used to extract partial-wave amplitudes. In particular, the energy region below the D13(1520) resonance was studied.

Partial wave expansion for photoproduction of two pseudoscalars on a nucleon

The amplitudes for photoproduction of two pseudoscalars on a nucleon are expanded in the overall c.m. frame in a model independent way with respect to the contribution of the final state partial wave of total angular momentum $J$ and its projection on the normal to the plane spanned by the momenta of the final particles. The expansion coefficients which are analogues to the multipole amplitudes for single meson photoproduction contain the complete information about the reaction dynamics. Results of an explicit evaluation are presented for the moments $W_{jm}$ of the inclusive angular distribution of an incident photon beam with respect to the c.m.\ coordinate system defined by the final particles taking photoproduction of $π^0π^0$ and $π^0η$ as an example.

Polarization observables in $π^0η$-photoproduction on the proton

For $π^0η$-photoproduction on the nucleon formal expressions are developed for the five-fold differential cross section and the recoil polarization including beam and target polarizations. The polarization observables are described by various beam, target and beam-target asymmetries for polarized photons and/or polarized nucleons. They are given as bilinear hermitean forms in the reaction matrix elements divided by the unpolarized cross section. Numerical results for the linear and circular beam asymmetries for $γp\toπ^0ηp$ are obtained within an isobar model and are compared with existing data. Predictions are also given for the target asymmetry $T_{11}$, and the beam-target asymmetries $T^c_{10}$ and $T^c_{11}$ for circularly polarized photons.

Photoproduction of $η'$-mesons off the deuteron

Quasi-free photoproduction of $η'$ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $η'$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $γn \rightarrow nη'$ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $η'$-production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. The data are compared to model calculations taking into account contributions from nucleon resonances and $t$-channel exchanges.

Study of the gp-->etap reaction with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron(MAMI-C)

The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses and to thelatest SAID and MAID fits that have included our data.

First measurement of the circular beam asymmetry in the gamma p --> pi0 eta p reaction

The circular photon asymmetry for pi0 eta photoproduction on the proton was measured for the first time at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI C accelerator using the Crystal Ball/TAPS photon spectrometer. The experimental results are interpreted within a phenomenological isobar model that confirms the dominant role of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance. The measured asymmetry allows us to identify small contributions from positive-parity resonances via interference terms with the dominant D33 amplitude.

Isobar model analysis of pi0-eta photoproduction on protons

Photoproduction of pi0-eta on protons in the energy range from threshold to 1.4 GeV is discussed. The data for representative angular distributions recently obtained at MAMI C are analyzed using an isobar model. The isobars considered are Delta(1232) and S11(1535) for pi0-p and eta-p states, respectively. In accordance with the results of earlier works the main features of the reaction are explained through the dominance of the D33 wave with a relatively small admixture of positive parity resonances. Comparison with recent experimental results for the photon beam asymmetry is carried out.

Photoproduction of pi^0 eta on protons and the Delta(1700)D_{33} resonance

Total and differential cross sections for the reaction gamma p -> pi^o eta p have been measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector using the tagged photon facility at the MAMI C accelerator in Mainz. In the energy range E_gamma=0.95-1.4 GeV the reaction is dominated by the excitation and sequential decay of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance. Angular distributions measured with high statistics allow us to determine the ratio of hadronic decay widths Γ_{ηΔ}/Γ_{πS11} and the ratio of the helicity amplitudes A_{3/2}/A_{1/2} for this resonance.

Beam-Helicity Asymmetries in Double Pion Photoproduction off the Proton

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz in the three isospin channels $\vecγp\to π^{+}π^0n$, $\vecγp\to π^{0}π^0p$ and $\vecγp\to π^{+}π^{-}p$ . The circularly polarized photons, produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons, were tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Charged pions and the decay photons of $π^0$ mesons were detected in a $~4π$ electromagnetic calorimeter which combined the Crystal Ball detector with the TAPS detector. The precisely measured asymmetries are very sensitive to details of the production processes and are thus key observables in the modeling of the reaction dynamics.

Analysis of angular distributions in gamma N \to pi0 eta N

Angular distributions in the final state of pi0-eta photoproduction on nucleons are considered. As a formal base the familiar isobar model is used in which the (pi0 eta N) state is a product of the resonance decay into eta-Delta(1232) and pi-S_{11}(1535) channels. One of the principal assumptions used is that in the actual energy region the reaction is dominated by a single resonance state. The developed formalism can serve as a tool for testing spin and parity of that resonance.

Photoproduction of eta-mesons on the deuteron above S11(1535) in the presence of a narrow P11(1670) resonance

Incoherent photoproduction of eta-mesons on the deuteron is considered. The main attention is paid to the region above the S11(1535) resonance where rather narrow resonance like structure in the total cross section extracted for gamma n -> eta n has been reported. The corresponding experimental results are analyzed from the phenomenological standpoint within the model containing a baryon P11 with the mass about 1670 MeV and a width less than 30 MeV. This resonance was suggested in some recent works as a nonstrange member of the pentaquark antidecuplet with J^P=1/2^+. The calculation is also performed for the polarized and nonpolarized angular distributions of $η$ mesons. In addition, we present our predictions for the cross sections of the neutral kaons and double pion photoproduction, where the same narrow P11(1670) resonance is assumed to contribute through the decay into K^0 Lambda and pi Delta configuration.
