Exact form factors in integrable quantum field theories: the scaling Z(N)-Ising model

A general form factor formula for the scaling Z(N)-Ising model is constructed. Exact expressions for matrix elements are obtained for several local operators. In addition, the commutation rules for order, disorder parameters and para-Fermi fields are derived. Because of the unusual statistics of the fields, the quantum field theory seems to be not related to any classical Lagrangian or field equation.

Low-energy cross section of the 7Be(p,g)8B solar fusion reaction from Coulomb dissociation of 8B

Final results from an exclusive measurement of the Coulomb breakup of 8B into 7Be+p at 254 A MeV are reported. Energy-differential Coulomb-breakup cross sections are analyzed using a potential model of 8B and first-order perturbation theory. The deduced astrophysical S_17 factors are in good agreement with the most recent direct 7Be(p,gamma)8B measurements and follow closely the energy dependence predicted by the cluster-model description of 8B by Descouvemont. We extract a zero-energy S_17 factor of 20.6 +- 0.8 (stat) +- 1.2 (syst) eV b.

Classical and quantum dynamics of a model for atomic-molecular Bose--Einstein condensates

We study a model for a two-mode atomic-molecular Bose--Einstein condensate. Starting with a classical analysis we determine the phase space fixed points of the system. It is found that bifurcations of the fixed points naturally separate the coupling parameter space into four regions. The different regions give rise to qualitatively different dynamics. We then show that this classification holds true for the quantum dynamics.

Behaviour of the energy gap in a model of Josephson coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

In this work we investigate the energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state in a model of two single-mode Bose-Einstein condensates coupled via Josephson tunneling. The energy gap is never zero when the tunneling interaction is non-zero. The gap exhibits no local minimum below a threshold coupling which separates a delocalised phase from a self-trapping phase which occurs in the absence of the external potential. Above this threshold point one minimum occurs close to the Josephson regime, and a set of minima and maxima appear in the Fock regime. Analytic expressions for the position of these minima and maxima are obtained. The connection between these minima and maxima and the dynamics for the expectation value of the relative number of particles is analysed in detail. We find that the dynamics of the system changes as the coupling crosses these points.

Quantum dynamics of a model for two Josephson-coupled Bose--Einstein condensates

In this work we investigate the quantum dynamics of a model for two single-mode Bose--Einstein condensates which are coupled via Josephson tunneling. Using direct numerical diagonalisation of the Hamiltonian, we compute the time evolution of the expectation value for the relative particle number across a wide range of couplings. Our analysis shows that the system exhibits rich and complex behaviours varying between harmonic and non-harmonic oscillations, particularly around the threshold coupling between the delocalised and self-trapping phases. We show that these behaviours are dependent on both the initial state of the system as well as regime of the coupling. In addition, a study of the dynamics for the variance of the relative particle number expectation and the entanglement for different initial states is presented in detail.

Review of the results of the KaoS Collaboration

The production of K+ and of K- mesons in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies of 1 to 2 AGeV has systematically been investigated with the Kaon Spectrometer KaoS. The ratio of the K+ production excitation function for Au+Au and for C+C reactions increases with decreasing beam energy, which is expected for a soft nuclear equation-of-state. A comprehensive study of the K+ and of the K- emission as a function of the size of the collision system, of the collision centrality, of the kaon energy, and of the polar emission angle has been performed. The K-/K+ ratio is found to be nearly constant as a function of the collision centrality and can be explained by the dominance of strangeness exchange. On the other hand the spectral slopes and the polar emission patterns are different for K- and for K+. Furthermore the azimuthal distribution of the particle emission has been investigated. K+ mesons and pions are emitted preferentially perpendicular to the reaction plane as well in Au+Au as in Ni+Ni collisions. In contrast for K- mesons in Ni+Ni reactions an in-plane flow was observed for the first time at these incident enegies.

Observation of different azimuthal emission patterns for K+ and of K- mesons in Heavy Ion Collisions at 1-2 AGeV

Azimuthal distributions of pi+, K+ and K- mesons have been measured in Au+Au reactions at 1.5 AGeV and Ni+Ni reactions at 1.93 AGeV. In semi-central collisions at midrapidity, pi+ and K+ mesons are emitted preferentially perpendicular to the reaction plane in both collision systems. In contrast for K- mesons in Ni+Ni reactions an in-plane elliptic flow was observed for the first time at these incident energies.

Thermal and magnetic properties of integrable spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains with applications to real compounds

The ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains are investigated via exactly solved su(3) and su(4) models with physically motivated chemical potential terms. The analysis involves the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and the High Temperature Expansion (HTE) methods. For the spin-1 chain with large single-ion anisotropy, a gapped phase occurs which is significantly different from the valence-bond-solid Haldane phase. The theoretical curves for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat are favourably compared with experimental data for a number of spin-1 chain compounds. For the spin-3/2 chain a degenerate gapped phase exists starting at zero external magnetic field. A middle magnetization plateau can be triggered by the single-ion anisotropy term. Overall, our results lend further weight to the applicability of integrable models to the physics of low-dimensional quantum spin systems. They also highlight the utility of the exact HTE method.

On the chemical equilibration of strangeness-exchange reaction in heavy-ion collisions

The strangeness-exchange reaction pi + Y -> K- + N is shown to be the dynamical origin of chemical equilibration for K- production in heavy-ion collisions up to beam energies of 10 A GeV. The hyperons occurring in this process are produced associately with K+ in baryon-baryon and meson-baryon interactions. This connection is demonstrated by the ratio K-/K+ which does not vary with centrality and shows a linear correlation with the yield of pions per participant. At incident energies above AGS this correlation no longer holds due to the change in the production mechanism of kaons.

First evidence for different freeze-out conditions for kaons and antikaons observed in heavy-ion collisions

Differential production cross sections of K- and K+ mesons have been measured in Ni+Ni and Au+Au collisions at a beam energy of 1.5 AGeV. The K-/K+ ratio is found to be nearly constant as a function of the collision centrality and system size. The spectral slopes and the polar emission pattern differ for K- and K+ mesons. These observations indicate that K+ mesons decouple earlier from the fireball than K- mesons.

K+ and K- production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS-energies

The production and the propagation of K+ and of K- mesons in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies of 1 to 2 AGeV have systematically been investigated with the Kaon Spectrometer KaoS at the SIS at the GSI. The ratio of the K+ production excitation function for Au+Au and for C+C reactions increases with decreasing beam energy, which is expected for a soft nuclear equation-of-state. At 1.5 AGeV a comprehensive study of the K+ and of the K- emission as a function of the size of the collision system, of the collision centrality, of the kaon energy, and of the polar emission angle has been performed. The K-/K+ ratio is found to be nearly constant as a function of the collision centrality. The spectral slopes and the polar emission patterns are different for K- and for K+. These observations indicate that K+ mesons decouple earlier from the reaction zone than K- mesons.

Coulomb dissociation of 8B and the low-energy cross section of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B solar fusion reaction

An exclusive measurement of the Coulomb breakup of 8B into 7Be+p at 254 A MeV allowed to study the angular correlations of the breakup particles. These correlations demonstrate clearly that E1 multipolarity dominates and that E2 multipolarity can be neglected. By using a simple single-particle model for 8B and treating the breakup in first-order perturbation theory, we extract a zero-energy S factor of S-(17)(0) = 18.6 +- 1.2 +- 1.0 eV b.

Note on the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz approach to the quantum phase diagram of the strong coupling ladder compounds

We investigate the low-temperature phase diagram of the exactly solved su(4) two-leg spin ladder as a function of the rung coupling $J_{\perp}$ and magnetic field $H$ by means of the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). In the absence of a magnetic field the model exhibits three quantum phases, while in the presence of a strong magnetic field there is no singlet ground state for ferromagnetic rung coupling. For antiferromagnetic rung coupling, there is a gapped phase in the regime H < H_{c1}, a fully polarized gapped phase for H > H_{c2} and a Luttinger liquid magnetic phase in the regime H_{c1} < H < H_{c2}. The critical behaviour derived using the TBA is consistent with the existing experimental, numerical and perturbative results for the strong coupling ladder compounds. This includes the spin excitation gap and the critical fields H_{c1} and H_{c2}, which are in excellent agreement with the experimental values for the known strong coupling ladder compounds (5IAP)_2CuBr_4 2H_2 O, Cu_2(C_5 H_{12} N_2)_2 Cl_4 and (C_5 H_{12} N)_2 CuBr_4. In addition we predict the spin gap $Δ\approx J_{\perp}-{1/2}J_{\parallel}$ for the weak coupling compounds with $J_{\perp} \sim J_{\parallel}$, such as (VO)_2 P_2 O_7, and also show that the gap opens for arbitrary $J_{\perp}/ J_{\parallel}$.

Exact solvability in contemporary physics

We review the theory for exactly solving quantum Hamiltonian systems through the algebraic Bethe ansatz. We also demonstrate how this theory applies to current studies in Bose-Einstein condensation and metallic grains which are of nanoscale size.

Thermodynamic properties of an integrable quantum spin ladder with boundary impurities

An integrable quantum spin ladder based on the SU(4) symmetry algebra with boundary defects is studied in the framework of boundary integrability. Five nontrivial solutions of the reflection equations lead to different boundary impurities. In each case the energy spectrum is determined using the quantum inverse scattering method. The thermodynamic properties are investigated by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. In particular, the susceptibility and the magnetization of the model in the vicinity of the critical points are derived along with differing magnetic properites for antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic impurity couplings at the edges. The results are applicable to the strong coupling ladder compounds, such as Cu_2(C_5 H_12 N_2)_2 Cl_4.

Magnetic Susceptibility of an integrable anisotropic spin ladder system

We investigate the thermodynamics of a spin ladder model which possesses a free parameter besides the rung and leg couplings. The model is exactly solved by the Bethe Ansatz and exhibits a phase transition between a gapped and a gapless spin excitation spectrum. The magnetic susceptibility is obtained numerically and its dependence on the anisotropy parameter is determined. A connection with the compounds KCuCl3, Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4 and (C5H12N)2CuBr4 in the strong coupling regime is made and our results for the magnetic susceptibility fit the experimental data remarkably well.

A supersymmetric U_{q}[osp(2|2)]-extended Hubbard model with boundary fields

A strongly correlated electron system associated with the quantum superalgebra ${U}_q[{osp}(2|2)]$ is studied in the framework of the quantum inverse scattering method. By solving the graded reflection equation, two classes of boundary-reflection $K$-matrices leading to four kinds of possible boundary interaction terms are found. Performing the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we diagonalize the two-level transfer matrices which characterize the charge and the spin degrees of freedom, respectively. The Bethe-ansatz equations, the eigenvalues of the transfer matrices and the energy spectrum are presented explicitly. We also construct two impurities coupled to the boundaries. In the thermodynamic limit, the ground state properties and impurity effects are discussed.
