The ages, masses and star-formation rates of spectroscopically confirmed z~6 galaxies in CANDELS

We report the results of a study exploring the stellar populations of 13 luminous (L>L*), spectroscopically confirmed, galaxies in the redshift interval 5.5 = 300 Myr, the degeneracies introduced by dust extinction mean that only two of these objects actually require a >300 Myr old stellar population to reproduce the observed photometry. Moreover, when considering only smoothly-varying star-formation histories, we observe a clear tension between the data and models such that a galaxy SED template with an old age is often chosen in order to try and fit objects with blue UV-slopes but red UV-to-optical colours. To break this tension we explore SED fitting with two-component models (burst plus on-going star-formation) and allow for nebular emission. On average, the inclusion of nebular emission leads to lower stellar-mass estimates (median offset 0.18 dex), moderately higher specific star-formation rates, and allows for a wider range of plausible stellar ages. However, based on our SED modelling, we find no strong evidence for extremely young ages in our sample (<50 Myr). Finally, considering all of the different star-formation histories explored, we find that the median best-fitting ages are of the order 200-300 Myr and that the objects with the tightest constraints indicate ages in the range 50-200 Myr (Abridged).

AGNs as main contributors to the UV ionizing emissivity at high redshifts: predictions from a Lambda-CDM model with linked AGN/galaxy evolution

We have evaluated the contribution of the AGN population to the ionization history of the Universe based on a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution in the CDM cosmological scenario. The model connects the growth of black holes and of the ensuing AGN activity to galaxy interactions. In the model we have included a self consistent physical description of the escape of ionizing UV photons; this is based on the blast-wave model for the AGN feedback we developed in a previous paper to explain the distribution of hydrogen column densities in AGNs of various redshifts and luminosities, due to absorption by the host galaxy gas. The model predicts UV luminosity functions for AGNs which are in good agreement with those derived from the observations especially at low and intermediate redshifts (z=3). At higher redshifts (z>5) the model tends to overestimate the data at faint luminosities. Critical biases both in the data and in the model are discussed to explain such apparent discrepancies. The predicted hydrogen photoionization rate as a function of redshift is found to be consistent with that derived from the observations. All that suggests to reconsider the role of the AGNs as the main driver of the ionization history of the Universe.

First observation of the hyper superheavy hydrogen 6ΛH

Three candidate events of the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6ΛH were uniquely identified in the FINUDA experiment at DAΦNE, Frascati, by observing π+ mesons from the (K-stop,π+) production reaction on 6Li targets, in coincidence with π-mesons from 6ΛH \rightarrow 6He+π- weak decay. Details of the experiment and the analysis of its data are reported, leading to an estimate of (2.9\pm2.0)\cdot10-6/K- stop for the 6ΛH production rate times the two-body π- weak decay branching ratio. The 6ΛH binding energy with respect to 5H + Λ was determined jointly from production and decay to be BΛ = (4.0 \pm 1.1) MeV, assuming that 5H is unbound with respect to 3H + 2n by 1.7 MeV. The binding energy determined from production is higher, in each one of the three events, than that determined from decay, with a difference of (0.98 \pm 0.74) MeV here assigned to the 0+g.s. \rightarrow 1+ excitation. The consequences of this assignment to Λ hypernuclear dynamics are briefly discussed.

Enhanced star formation rates in AGN hosts with respect to inactive galaxies from PEP-Herschel observations

We compare the average star formation (SF) activity in X-ray selected AGN hosts with mass-matched control inactive galaxies, including star forming and quiescent sources, at 0.5 10sigma) for bright AGNs. However, when comparing to star forming galaxies only, AGN hosts are broadly consistent with the locus of their `main sequence'. We investigate the relative far-IR luminosity distributions of active and inactive galaxies, and find a higher fraction of PACS detected, hence normal and highly star forming systems among AGN hosts. Although different interpretations are possible, we explain our findings as a consequence of a twofold AGN growth path: faint AGNs evolve through secular processes, with instantaneous AGN accretion not tightly linked to the current total SF in the host, while luminous AGNs co-evolve with their hosts through periods of enhanced AGN activity and SF, possibly through major mergers. While an increased SF with respect to non-AGNs of similar mass is expected in the latter, we interpret the modest SF offsets measured in low-Lx AGN hosts as either a) generated by non-synchronous accretion and SF histories in a merger scenario or b) due to possible connections between instantaneous SF and accretion that can be induced by smaller scale (non-major merger) mechanisms. Far-IR luminosity distributions favour the latter scenario.

The blue UV slopes of z~4 Lyman break galaxies: implications for the corrected star formation rate density

We plan to analyse dust extinction in Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) by introducing a new and more reliable approach to their selection and to the characterization of their distribution of UV slopes beta, using deep IR images from HST. We exploit deep WFC3 IR observations of the ERS and HUDF fields over GOODS-South, combined with HST-ACS optical data, to select z~4 LBGs through a new (B-V) vs. (V-H) colour diagram. The UV slope of the selected galaxies is robustly determined by a linear fit over their observed I, Z, Y, J magnitudes, coherently with the original definition of beta. The same fit is used to determine their rest-frame UV magnitudes M1600 through a simple interpolation. We estimate the effect of observational uncertainties with detailed simulations that we also exploit, under a parametric maximum-likelihood approach, to constrain the probability density function of UV slopes PDF(beta) as a function of rest-frame magnitude. We find 142 and 25 robust LBGs in the ERS and HUDF fields respectively, limiting our sample to S/N(H)>10 objects. Our newly defined criteria improve the selection of z~4 LBGs and allow us to exclude red interlopers at lower redshift, especially z~3-3.5 objects. We find that z~4 LBGs are characterized by blue UV slopes, suggesting a low dust extinction: all L \simeq-2.1, while brighter objects only are slightly redder ( -1.9). We find an intrinsic dispersion ~ 0.3 for PDF(beta) at all magnitudes. The SFRD at z~4 corrected according to these estimates turns out to be lower than previously found: log(SFRD)\simeq-1.09 M_sun/yr/Mpc^3. Finally, we discuss how the UV slope of z~4 galaxies changes as a function of the dust-corrected UV magnitude (i.e. SFR) showing that most galaxies with a high SFR (> 80 M_sun/yr) are highly extincted objects. The evolving slope of the stellar mass function at 0.6 <= z < 4.5 from deep WFC3 data

We used Early Release Science (ERS) observations taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) in the GOODS-S field to study the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) at 0.6<=z<4.5. Deep WFC3 near-IR data (for Y as faint as 27.3, J and H as faint as 27.4 AB mag at 5 sigma), as well as deep Ks (as faint as 25.5 at 5 sigma) Hawk-I band data, provide an exquisite data set with which determine in an unprecedented way the low-mass end of the GSMF, allowing an accurate probe of masses as low as M~7.6 10^9 Msun at z~3. Although the area used is relatively small (~33 arcmin^2), we found generally good agreement with previous studies on the entire mass range. Our results show that the slope of the faint-end increases with redshift, from alpha=-1.44+/-0.03 at z~0.8 to alpha=-1.86+/-0.16 at z~3, although indications exist that it does not steepen further between z~3 and z~4. This result is insensitive to any uncertainty in the M* parameter. The steepness of the GSMF faint-end solves the well-known disagreement between the stellar mass density (SMD) and the integrated star formation history at z>2. However, we confirm the that there appears to be an excess of integrated star formation with respect to the SMD at z<2, by a factor of ~2-3. Our comparison of the observations with theoretical predictions shows that the models forecast a greater abundance of low mass galaxies, at least up to z~3, as well as a dearth of massive galaxies at z~4 with respect to the data, and that the predicted SMD is generally overestimated at z<~2.

Evidence for 6ΛH

Evidence for the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6ΛH is presented from the FINUDA experiment at DAΦNE, Frascati, studying (π+, π-) pairs in coincidence from the K- +6Li \rightarrow 6 H+π+ production reaction followed by 6ΛH \rightarrow 6He + π- weak decay. The production rate of 6ΛH undergoing this two-body π- decay is determined to be (2.9\pm2.0)\cdot10-6/K-. Its binding energy, evaluated jointly from production and decay, is BΛ(6ΛH) = (4.0\pm1.1) MeV with respect to 5H+Λ. A systematic difference of (0.98 \pm 0.74) MeV between BΛ values derived separately from decay and from production is tentatively assigned to the 6ΛH 0+g.s. \rightarrow 1+ excitation.

Evolution of the observed Ly-alpha luminosity function from z = 6.5 to z = 7.7: evidence for the epoch of reionization ?

Aims. Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) can be detected out to very high redshifts during the epoch of reionization. The evolution of the LAE luminosity function with redshift is a direct probe of the Ly-alpha transmission of the intergalactic medium (IGM), and therefore of the IGM neutral-hydrogen fraction. Measuring the Ly-alpha luminosity function (LF) of LAEs at redshift z = 7.7 therefore allows us to constrain the ionizing state of the Universe at this redshift. Methods. We observed three 7.5'x7.5' fields with the HAWK-I instrument at the VLT with a narrow band filter centred at 1.06 $μ$m and targeting LAEs at redshift z ~ 7.7. The fields were chosen for the availability of multiwavelength data. One field is a galaxy cluster, the Bullet Cluster, which allowed us to use gravitational amplification to probe luminosities that are fainter than in the field. The two other fields are subareas of the GOODS Chandra Deep Field South and CFHTLS-D4 deep field. We selected z=7.7 LAE candidates from a variety of colour criteria, in particular from the absence of detection in the optical bands. Results. We do not find any LAE candidates at z = 7.7 in ~2.4 x 10^4 Mpc^3 down to a narrow band AB magnitude of ~ 26, which allows us to infer robust constraints on the Ly-alpha LAE luminosity function at this redshift. Conclusions. The predicted mean number of objects at z = 6.5, derived from somewhat different LFs of Hu et al. (2010), Ouchi et al. (2010), and Kashikawa et al. (2011) are 2.5, 13.7, and 11.6, respectively. Depending on which of these LFs we refer to, we exclude a scenario with no evolution from z = 6.5 to z = 7.7 at 85% confidence without requiring a strong change in the IGM Ly-alpha transmission, or at 99% confidence with a significant quenching of the IGM Ly-alpha transmission, possibly from a strong increase in the high neutral-hydrogen fraction between these two redshifts.

The $A(K^-_{stop},π^\pmΣ^\mp)A'$ reaction on p-shell nuclei

This letter is concerned with the study of the $K^-_{stop}A\rightarrow π^\pmΣ^\mp A'$ reaction in p-shell nuclei, i.e., $^{6,7}Li$, $^9Be$, $^{13}C$ and $^{16}O$. The $π^\pmΣ^\mp / K^-_{stop}$ emission rates are reported as a function of $A$. These rates are discussed in comparison with previous findings. The ratio $π^-Σ^+/π^+Σ^-$ in p-shell nuclei is found to depart largely from that on hydrogen, which provides support for large in-medium effects possibly generated by the sub-threshold $Λ(1405)$. The continuum momentum spectra of prompt pions and free sigmas are also discussed as well as the $π^\pmΣ^\mp$ missing mass behavior and the link with the reaction mechanism. The apparatus used for the investigation is the FINUDA spectrometer operating at the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory (LNF-INFN, Italy).

Faint high-redshift AGN in the Chandra Deep Field South: the evolution of the AGN luminosity function and black hole demography

We present detection and analysis of faint X-ray sources in the Chandra deep field south (CDFS) using the 4 Msec Chandra observation and adopting a new detection algorithm, based on a targeted search at the position of known high-z galaxies. This optimized technique results in the identification of 54 z>3 AGNs, 29 of which are new detections. Applying stringent completeness criteria, we derive AGN luminosity functions in the redshift bins 3-4, 4-5 and >5.8 and for 42.75 3 (18+17-10%). Their optical counterparts are not strongly reddened and we thus conclude that the size of the X-ray absorber is likely smaller than the dust sublimation radius. We finally report the discovery of a highly star-forming galaxy at z=3.47. If confirmed, this would be one of the farthest objects in which stellar sources are detected in X-rays.

The lesser role of starbursts for star formation at z=2

Two main modes of star formation are know to control the growth of galaxies: a relatively steady one in disk-like galaxies, defining a tight star formation rate (SFR)-stellar mass sequence, and a starburst mode in outliers to such a sequence which is generally interpreted as driven by merging. Such starburst galaxies are rare but have much higher SFRs, and it is of interest to establish the relative importance of these two modes. PACS/Herschel observations over the whole COSMOS and GOODS-South fields, in conjunction with previous optical/near-IR data, have allowed us to accurately quantify for the first time the relative contribution of the two modes to the global SFR density in the redshift interval 1.5 1000M(sun)/yr, off-sequence sources significantly contribute to the SFR density (46+/-20%). We conclude that merger-driven starbursts play a relatively minor role for the formation of stars in galaxies, whereas they may represent a critical phase towards the quenching of star formation and morphological transformation in galaxies.

Spectroscopic confirmation of z~7 LBGs: probing the earliest galaxies and the epoch of reionization

We present the final results from our ultra-deep spectroscopic campaign with FORS2 at the ESO/VLT for the confirmation of z~7 "z--band dropout" candidates selected from our VLT/Hawk-I imaging survey over three independent fields. In particular we report on two newly discovered galaxies at redshift ~6.7 in the NTT deep field: both galaxies show a Ly-alpha emission line with rest-frame EWs of the order 15-20 A and luminosities of 2-4 X 10^{42} erg/s. We also present the results of ultra-deep observations of a sample of i-dropout galaxies, from which we set a solid upper limit on the fraction of interlopers. Out of the 20 z-dropouts observed we confirm 5 galaxies at 6.7 < z < 7.1. This is systematically below the expectations drawn on the basis of lower redshift observations: in particular there is a significant lack of objects with intermediate Ly-alpha EWs (between 20 and 55 A). We conclude that the trend for the fraction of Ly-alpha emission in LBGs that is constantly increasing from z~3 to z~6 is most probably reversed from z~6 to z~7. Explaining the observed rapid change in the LAE fraction among the drop-out population with reionization requires a fast evolution of the neutral fraction of hydrogen in the Universe. Assuming that the Universe is completely ionized at z=6 and adopting the semi-analytical models of Dijkstra et al. (2011), we find that our data require a change of the neutral hydrogen fraction of the order Delta chi_{HI} ~ 0.6 in a time Delta z ~ 1, provided that the escape fraction does not increase dramatically over the same redshift interval.

An X-ray underluminous cluster of galaxies in the 4Ms CDFS observations

[Abridged] We use the large public spectroscopic database available in the GOODS-South field to estimate the dynamical mass and the virialization status of cluster ClG 0332-2747 at z=0.734. Cluster members selected from their photometric redshift are used with spectroscopic ones to analyse the galaxy population of the cluster. In the newly released Chandra 4Ms observations we detect a faint extended X-ray emission associated to the cluster. Finally, we compare the optical and X-ray properties of ClG 0332-2747 with the predictions of a well tested semianalytic model. We estimate the velocity dispersion and the virial mass considering all 44 spectroscopic members, or 20 red-sequence members only. We obtain sigma_v=634 +/- 105 Km/s, M_200=3.07 ^{+1.57}_{-1.16}~10^{14} M_sun in the former case, and slightly lower values in the latter case. The cluster appears to have reached the virial equilibrium: it shows a perfectly Gaussian velocity distribution and no evidence for substructures. ClG 0332-2747 contains a high fraction of bright red galaxies, and is dominated by a very massive (1.1 x 10^{12} M_sun) old brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), suggesting that it formed at an early epoch. We detect a faint extended X-ray source centered on the BCG, with a total X-ray luminosity of L_X ~ 2 x 10^{42} erg s^-1 (0.1-2.4 keV). This L_X is lower by a factor of ~10-20 than expected according to the M-L_X relation. We provide a possible explanation of this discrepancy as due to the effects of AGN feedback on the ICM: the semianalytic model reproduces the M-L_X relation measured from "X-ray bright" clusters, and it predicts a high scatter at low masses due to heating and expulsion of the cluster gas. Interestingly, in the model clusters with an evolved galaxy population like ClG 0332-2747 present the largest scatter in X-ray luminosity.

A low escape fraction of ionizing photons of L>L* Lyman break galaxies at z=3.3

We present an upper limit for the relative escape fraction (f_{esc}^{rel}) of ionizing radiation at z~3.3 using a sample of 11 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) with deep imaging in the U band obtained with the Large Binocular Camera, mounted on the prime focus of the Large Binocular Telescope. We selected 11 LBGs with secure redshift in the range 3.27 =30.7(AB)mag at 1 sigma. We derive a 1 sigma upper limit of f_{esc}^{rel}~5%, which is one of the lowest values found in the literature so far at z~3.3. Assuming that the upper limit for the escape fraction that we derived from our sample holds for all galaxies at this redshift, the hydrogen ionization rate that we obtain (Gamma_{-12}<0.3 s^{-1}) is not enough to keep the IGM ionized and a substantial contribution to the UV background by faint AGNs is required. Since our sample is clearly still limited in size, larger z~3 LBG samples, at similar or even greater depths are necessary to confirm these results on a more firm statistical basis.

A critical analysis of the UV Luminosity Function at redshift~7 from deep WFC3 data

The study of the Luminosity Function (LF) of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=7 is important for ascertaining their role in the reionization of the Universe. We perform a detailed and critical analysis of the statistical and systematic errors in the z~7 LF determination: we have assembled a large sample of candidate LBGs at z~7 from different surveys, spanning a large variety of areas and depths. In particular, we have combined data from the deep (J<27.4) and ultradeep (J<29.2) surveys recently acquired with the new WFC3 NIR camera on HST, over the GOODS-ERS and the HUDF fields, with ground based surveys in wide and shallow areas from VLT and Subaru. We have used public ACS images in the z-band to select z-dropout galaxies, and other public data both in the blue (BVI) and in the red bands to reject possible low-redshift interlopers. We have compared our results with extensive simulations to quantify the observational effects of our selection criteria as well as the effects of photometric scatter, color selections or the morphology of the candidates. We have found that the number density of faint LBGs at z~7 is only marginally sensitive to the color selection adopted, but it is strongly dependent from the assumption made on the half light distributions of the simulated galaxies, used to correct the observed sample for incompleteness. The slope of the faint end of the LBGs LF has thus a rather large uncertainty, due to the unknown distribution of physical sizes of the z~7 LBGs. We conclude that galaxies at z~7 are unable to reionize the Universe unless there is a significant evolution in the clumpiness of the IGM or in the escape fraction of ionising photons or, alternatively, there is a large population of z~7 LBGs with large physical dimensions but still not detected by the present observations.

Study of some two-body non-mesonic decays of $^4_Λ$He and $^5_Λ$He

The Non-Mesonic (NM) decay of $^4_Λ{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^5_Λ{\mathrm{He}}$ in two-body channels has been studied by the FINUDA Collaboration. Two-body NM decays of hypernuclei are rare and the existing observations and theoretical calculations are scarce. The $^4_Λ{\mathrm{He}}\rightarrow d+d,\; p+t$ decay channels simultaneously observed by FINUDA on several nuclei are compared: the $pt$ channel is the dominant one. The decay yields for the two decay channels are assessed for the first time: they are $(1.37\pm 0.37)\times 10^{-5}/K^-_{stop}$ and $(8.3\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-5}/K^-_{stop}$, respectively. Due to the capability of FINUDA of identifying $^5_Λ{\mathrm{He}}$ hypernuclei, a few $^5_Λ{\mathrm{He}}\rightarrow d+t$ decay events have also been observed. The branching ratio for this decay channel has been measured for the first time: $(3.0\pm 2.3)\times 10^{-3}$.

Hypernuclear spectroscopy with K$^-$ at rest on $^7$Li, $^9$Be, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$O

The FINUDA experiment collected data to study the production of hypernuclei on different nuclear targets. The hypernucleus formation occurred through the strangeness-exchange reaction $K^-_{stop} + \; ^AZ \rightarrow \; ^A_ΛZ + π^-$. From the analysis of the momentum of the emerging $π^-$, binding energies and formation probabilities of $^7_Λ$Li, $^9_Λ$Be, $^{13}_Λ$C and $^{16}_Λ$O have been measured and are here presented. The behavior of the formation probability as a function of the atomic mass number A is also discussed.
