Two Energy Scales and two Quasiparticle Dynamics in the Superconducting State of Underdoped Cuprates

The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap. Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales, depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: nodal regions near the zeros of the superconducting gap and antinodal regions. While antinodal quasiparticles quickly loose coherence as doping is reduced, coherent nodal quasiparticles persist down to low doping levels. A theoretical analysis using a new sum-rule allows us to relate the low-frequency-dependence of the Raman response to the temperature-dependence of the superfluid density, both controlled by nodal excitations.

Spin dynamics and magnetic order in magnetically frustrated Tb2Sn2O7

We report a study of the geometrically frustrated magnetic material Tb2Sn2O7 by the positive muon spin relaxation technique. No signature of a static magnetically ordered state is detected while neutron magnetic reflections are observed in agreement with a published report. This is explained by the dynamical nature of the ground state of Tb2Sn2O7: the Tb3+ magnetic moment characteristic fluctuation time is ~ 10^{-10} s. The strong effect of the magnetic field on the muon spin-lattice relaxation rate at low fields indicates a large field-induced increase of the magnetic density of states of the collective excitations at low energy.

Nernst effect and disorder in the normal state of high-T_{c} cuprates

We have studied the influence of disorder induced by electron irradiation on the Nernst effect in optimally and underdoped YBa2Cu3O(7-d) single crystals. The fluctuation regime above T_{c} expands significantly with disorder, indicating that the T_{c} decrease is partly due to the induced loss of phase coherence. In pure crystals the temperature extension of the Nernst signal is found to be narrow whatever the hole doping, contrary to data reported in the low-T_{c} cuprates families. Our results show that the presence of "intrinsic" disorder can explain the enhanced range of Nernst signal found in the pseudogap phase of the latter compounds.

ESR study of the single-ion anisotropy in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7

Single-ion anisotropy is of importance for the magnetic ordering of the frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7. The anisotropy parameters for the Gd2Sn2O7 were measured using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. The anisotropy was found to be of the easy plane type, with the main constant D=140mK. This value is 35% smaller than the value of the corresponding anisotropy constant in the related compound Gd2Ti2O7.

Effects of Magnetic and non-Magnetic Impurities on the Superconducting State of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

We report Electronic Raman Scattering measurements on optimally doped Zn and Ni substituted YBCO in A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ channels. We show that the superconducting gap energy is independant of magnetic Ni and non-magnetic Zn substitutions. On the contrary the collective A$_{1g}$ mode follows the critical temperature $T_c$ with two distinct slopes for Ni and Zn, and tracks the magnetic resonance seen in inelastic neutron scattering. We explain the unconventionnal energy dependence of the superconducting gap and discuss the behaviour of the A$_{1g}$ mode within magnetic and non-magnetic impurities.

Influence of parasitic phases on the properties of BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films

We have explored the influence of deposition pressure and temperature on the growth of BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition onto (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Single-phase BiFeO3 films are obtained in a region close to 10-2 mbar and 580C. In non-optimal conditions, X-ray diffraction reveals the presence of Fe oxides or of Bi2O3. We address the influence of these parasitic phases on the magnetic and electrical properties of the films and show that films with Fe2O3 systematically exhibit a ferromagnetic behaviour, while single-phase films have a low bulk-like magnetic moment. Conductive-tip atomic force microscopy mappings also indicate that Bi2O3 conductive outgrowths create shortcuts through the BiFeO3 films, thus preventing their practical use as ferroelectric elements in functional heterostructures.

Magnetic order and spin fluctuations in the spin liquid Tb$\_2$Sn$\_2$O$\_7$

We have studied the spin liquid Tb$\_2$Sn$\_2$O$\_7$ by neutron diffraction and specific heat measurements. Below about 2 K, the magnetic correlations change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. Magnetic order settles in two steps, with a smeared transition at 1.3(1) K then an abrupt transition at 0.87(2) K. A new magnetic structure is observed, not predicted by current models, with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic character. It suggests that the spin liquid degeneracy is lifted by dipolar interactions combined with a finite anisotropy along $<111>$ axes. In the ground state, the Tb$^{3+}$ ordered moment is reduced with respect to the free ion moment (9 $μ\_{\rm B}$). The moment value of 3.3(3) $μ\_{\rm B}$ deduced from the specific heat is much smaller than derived from neutron diffraction of 5.9(1) $μ\_{\rm B}$. This difference is interpreted by the persistence of slow collective magnetic fluctuations down to the lowest temperatures.

Magnetic properties of Yb2Mo2O7 and Gd2Mo2O7 from rare earth Mossbauer measurements

Using 170-Yb and 155-Gd Mossbauer measurements down to 0.03K, we have examined the semiconducting pyrochlore Yb2Mo2O7 where the Mo intra-sublattice interaction is anti-ferromagnetic and the metallic pyrochlore Gd2Mo2O7 where this interaction is ferromagnetic. Additional information was obtained from susceptibility, magnetisation and 172-Yb perturbed angular correlation measurements. The microscopic measurements evidence lattice disorder which is important in Yb2Mo2O7 and modest in Gd2Mo2O7. Magnetic irreversibilities occur at 17K in Yb2Mo2O7 and at 75K in Gd2Mo2O7 and below these temperatures the rare earths carry magnetic moments which are induced through couplings with the Mo sublattice. In Gd2Mo2O7, we observe the steady state Gd hyperfine populations at 0.027K are out of thermal equilibrium, indicating that Gd and Mo spin fluctuations persist at very low temperatures. Frustration is thus operative in this essentially isotropic pyrochlore where the dominant Mo intra-sublattice interaction is ferromagnetic.

Determination and Control of Oxygen Stoichiometry in the Cuprate Bi2sr2cuo6+D

The relatively low Tc of Bi2Sr2CuO6+D allows to study normal-state down to low temperatures and the non-substituted compound is intrinsically strongly overdoped. Hole concentration can be adjusted trough oxygen excess, but few data exist in the literature about the quantitative control of D. The synthesis, achieved in air by solid-state reaction, needs long-time annealing to obtain pure phase with stoichiometric cationic ratios. Thermogravimetric techniques were used to explore oxygen non-stoichiometry. Absolute oxygen content was determined by reduction with hydrogen, while the oxygen exchange was studied between 300 C and 670 C with different PO2. Oxygen excess varies between 0.14 and 0.18, with possibly two regimes of oxygen intercalation. These results are compared to Bi-2212.

Failure of the empirical OCT law in the Bi2Sr2CuO6+d compound

We have studied the evolution of the thermoelectric power S(T) with oxygen doping of single-layered Bi2Sr2CuO6+d thin films and ceramics in the overall superconducting (Tc, S290K) phase diagram. While the universal relation between the room-temperature thermopower S290K and the critical temperature is found to hold in the strongly overdoped region (d>0.14), a strong violation is observed in the underdoped part of the phase diagram. The observed behaviour is compared with other cuprates and the different scenarios are discussed.

Thermopower in Overdoped Region of Cuprates

The thermoelectric power S(T) of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d is studied as a function of oxygen doping in the strongly overdoped region of the phase diagram (T, d). As other physical properties in this region, diffusion thermopower Sdiff(T) also shows an important deviation from conventional Fermi liquid behaviour. This departure from T-linear S(T) dependence together with the results of susceptibility on the same samples suggest that the origin of the observed non-metallic behaviour is the existence of a singularity in the density of states near the Fermi level. The doping and temperature dependence of themopower is compared with a tight-binding band model.

Anomalous Electronic Susceptibility in Bi2sr2cuo6+d

We report magnetic susceptibility performed on overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6+d powders as a function of oxygen doping d and temperature T. The decrease of the spin susceptibility chis with increasing T is confirmed. At sufficient high temperature, chis presents an unusual linear temperature dependence chis=chis0 -chi1T . Moreover, a linear correlation between chi1 and chis0 for increasing hole concentration has been displayed. These non conventional metal features will be discussed in terms of a singular narrow-band structures.

Evidence for two distinct energy scales in the Raman spectra of YBa2(CuNi)O6.95

We report low energy electronic Raman scattering from Ni-substituted YBa2Cu3O6.95 single crystals with Tc ranging from 92.5 K to 78 K. The fully symmetrical A1g channel and the B1g channel which is sensitive to the dx2-y2 gap maximum have been explored. The energy of the B1g pair-breaking peak remains constant under Ni doping while the energy of the A1g peak scales with Tc (EA1g/Tc=5). Our data show that the A1g peak tracks the magnetic resonance peak observed in inelastic neutron scattering yielding a key explanation to the long-standing problem of the origin the A1g peak.

Anomalous electronic susceptibility in Bi2Sr2CuO6+d and comparison with other overdoped cuprates

We report magnetic susceptibility performed on overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6+d powders as a function of oxygen doping d and temperature T. The decrease of the spin susceptibility with increasing T is confirmed. At sufficient high temperature, the spin susceptibility Chi_s presents an unusual linear temperature dependence Chi_s ~ Chi_s0 -Chi_1 T. Moreover, a linear correlation between Chi_1 and Chi_s0 for increasing hole concentration is displayed. A temperature Tchi, independent of hole doping characterizes this scaling. Comparison with other cuprates of the literature(LSCO, Tl-2201 and Bi-2212), over the same overdoped range, shows similarities with above results. These non conventional metal features will be discussed in terms of a singular narrow-band structure.

Thermopower in the strongly overdoped region of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d superconductor

The evolution of the thermoelectric power S(T) with doping, p, of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d ceramics in the strongly overdoped region is studied in detail. Analysis in term of drag and diffusion contributions indicates a departure of the diffusion from the T-linear metallic behavior. This effect is increased in the strongly overdoped range (p~0.2-0.28) and should reflect the proximity of some topological change.

First Order Transition in the Spin Dynamics of Geometrically Frustrated Yb2Ti2O7

Using neutron diffraction, 170Yb Mossbauer and muSR spectroscopies, we have examined the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 where the Yb3+ S'=1/2 ground state has planar anisotropy. Below ~0.24K, the temperature of the known specific heat lambda transition, there is no long range magnetic order. We show that the transition corresponds to a first order change in the fluctuation rate of the Yb3+ spins. Above the transition temperature, the rate, in the GHz range, follows a thermal excitation law, whereas below, the rate, in the MHz range, is essentially temperature independent indicative of a quantum fluctuation regime.
