Admixture of an s-wave component to the d-wave gap symmetry in high-temperature superconductors

Neutron crystal-field spectroscopy experiments in the Y- and La-type high-temperature superconductors HoBa2Cu3O6.56, HoBa2Cu4O8, and La1.81Sr0.15Ho0.04CuO4 are reviewed. By this bulk-sensitive technique, information on the gap function is obtained from the relaxation behavior of crystal-field transitions associated with the Ho3+ ions which sit as local probes close to the superconducting copper-oxide planes. The relaxation data exhibit a peculiar change from a convex to a concave shape between the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the pseudogap temperature T* which can only be modelled satisfactorily if the gap function of predominantly d-wave symmetry includes an s-wave component of the order of 20-25%, independent of the doping level. Moreover, our results are compatible with an unusual temperature dependence of the gap function in the pseudogap region (Tc<T<T*), i.e., a breakup of the Fermi surface into disconnected arcs.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-trimer compounds Ca3Cu3-xNix(PO4)4 (x=0,1,2)

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed for the spin-trimer compounds Ca3Cu3-xNix(PO4)4 (x=0,1,2) in order to study the dynamic magnetic properties. The observed excitations can be associated with transitions between the low-lying electronic states of linear Cu-Cu-Cu, Cu-Cu-Ni, and Ni-Cu-Ni trimers which are the basic constituents of the title compounds. The exchange interactions within the trimers are well described by the Heisenberg model with dominant antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions J. For x=0 we find JCu-Cu=-4.74(2) meV which is enhanced for x=1 to JCu-Cu=-4.92(6) meV. For x=1 and x=2 we find JCu-Ni=-0.85(10) meV and an axial single-ion anisotropy parameter DNi=-0.7(1) meV. While the x=0 and x=1 compounds do not exhibit long-range magnetic ordering down to 1 K, the x=2 compound shows antiferromagnetic ordering below TN=20 K, which is compatible with the molecular-field parameter 0.63(12) meV derived by neutron spectroscopy.

Real and marginal isotope effects in cuprate superconductors

We critically review recent and earlier results on isotope effects in cuprate superconductors and emphasize that the sample preparation and the isotope exchange and back exchange are crucial in understanding and interpreting the data. Only extremely careful preparation techniques yield reliable results and permit differentiation between real isotope effects and marginal ones. The former are substantial and highlight the lattice vibrational importance in cuprate superconductors.

Quantum Statistics of Interacting Dimer Spin Systems

The compound TlCuCl3 represents a model system of dimerized quantum spins with strong interdimer interactions. We investigate the triplet dispersion as a function of temperature by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. By comparison with a number of theoretical approaches we demonstrate that the description of Troyer, Tsunetsugu, and Wuertz [Phys. Rev. B 50, 13515 (1994)] provides an appropriate quantum statistical model for dimer spin systems at finite temperatures, where many-body correlations become particularly important.
