Density of states for the $π$-flux state with bipartite real random hopping only: A weak disorder approach

Gade [R. Gade, Nucl. Phys. B \textbf{398}, 499 (1993)] has shown that the local density of states for a particle hopping on a two-dimensional bipartite lattice in the presence of weak disorder and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry(chiral unitary universality class) is anomalous in the vicinity of the band center $ε=0$ whenever the disorder preserves the sublattice symmetry. More precisely, using a nonlinear-sigma-model that encodes the sublattice (chiral) symmetry and the absence of time-reversal symmetry she argues that the disorder average local density of states diverges as $|ε|^{-1}\exp(-c|\lnε|^κ)$ with $c$ some non-universal positive constant and $κ=1/2$ a universal exponent. Her analysis has been extended to the case when time-reversal symmetry is present (chiral orthogonal universality class) for which the same exponent $κ=1/2$ was predicted. Motrunich \textit{et al.} [O. Motrunich, K. Damle, and D. A. Huse, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{65}, 064206 (2001)] have argued that the exponent $κ=1/2$ does not apply to the typical density of states in the chiral orthogonal universality class. They predict that $κ=2/3$ instead. We confirm the analysis of Motrunich \textit{et al.} within a field theory for two flavors of Dirac fermions subjected to two types of weak uncorrelated random potentials: a purely imaginary vector potential and a complex valued mass potential. This model is believed to belong to the chiral orthogonal universality class. Our calculation relies in an essential way on the existence of infinitely many local composite operators with negative anomalous scaling dimensions.

Universality of delocalization in unconventional dirty superconducting wires with broken spin-rotation symmetry

In dirty superconducting wires, quasiparticle states at the Fermi level need not be exponentially localized if spin-rotation symmetry is broken [Brouwer {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 1064 (2000)]. Here we present evidence that not-localized states are generic in the thick-wire limit, while for wires of finite thickness delocalization requires fine tuning of the disorder, consistent with earlier results of Motrunich {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 63}, 224204 (2001)]. The thick-wire limit is defined as the simultaneous limit where the length $L$ of the wire and the number $N$ of propagating channels at the Fermi energy are both taken to infinity with their ratio held fixed.

Generalized two-leg Hubbard ladder at half-filling: Phase diagram and quantum criticalities

The ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled two-leg Hubbard ladder with inter-site Coulomb repulsions and exchange coupling is studied by using the strong-coupling perturbation theory and the weak-coupling bosonization method. Considered here as possible ground states of the ladder model are four types of density-wave states with different angular momentum (s-density-wave state, p-density-wave state, d-density-wave state, and f-density-wave state) and four types of quantum disordered states, i.e., Mott insulating states (S-Mott, D-Mott, S'-Mott, and D'-Mott states, where S and D stand for s- and d-wave symmetry). The s-density-wave state, the d-density-wave state, and the D-Mott state are also known as the charge-density-wave (CDW) state, the staggered-flux (SF) state, and the rung-singlet state, respectively. Strong-coupling approach naturally leads to the Ising model in a transverse field as an effective theory for the quantum phase transitions between the SF state and the D-Mott state and between the CDW state and the S-Mott state, where the Ising ordered states correspond to doubly degenerate ground states in the staggered-flux or the charge-density-wave state. From the weak-coupling bosonization approach it is shown that there are three cases in the quantum phase transitions between a density-wave state and a Mott state: the Ising (Z_2) criticality, the SU(2)_2 criticality, and a first-order transition. The quantum phase transitions between Mott states and between density-wave states are found to be the U(1) Gaussian criticality. The ground-state phase diagram is determined by integrating perturbative renormalization-group equations. It is shown that the S-Mott state and the SF state exist in the region sandwiched by the CDW phase and the D-Mott phase.

Zero-modes in the random hopping model

If the number of lattice sites is odd, a quantum particle hopping on a bipartite lattice with random hopping between the two sublattices only is guaranteed to have an eigenstate at zero energy. We show that the localization length of this eigenstate depends strongly on the boundaries of the lattice, and can take values anywhere between the mean free path and infinity. The same dependence on boundary conditions is seen in the conductance of such a lattice if it is connected to electron reservoirs via narrow leads. For any nonzero energy, the dependence on boundary conditions is removed for sufficiently large system sizes.

Occupation of a resonant level coupled to a chiral Luttinger liquid

We consider a resonant level coupled to a chiral Luttinger liquid which can be realized, e.g., at a fractional quantum Hall edge. We study the dependence of the occupation probability n of the level on its energy εfor various values of the Luttinger-liquid parameter g. At g<1/2 a weakly coupled level shows a sharp jump in n(ε) at the Fermi level. As the coupling is increased, the magnitude of the jump decreases until \sqrt{2g}, and then the discontinuity in n(ε) disappears. We show that n(ε) can be expressed in terms of the magnetization of a Kondo impurity as a function of magnetic field.

Phase Diagram of One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model at Half Filling

We reexamine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. We calculate second-order corrections to coupling constants in the g-ology to show that the bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for weak couplings in between the charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons destabilizes the BCDW state and gives rise to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line.

Fokker-Planck equations and density of states in disordered quantum wires

We propose a general scheme to construct scaling equations for the density of states in disordered quantum wires for all ten pure Cartan symmetry classes. The anomalous behavior of the density of states near the Fermi level for the three chiral and four Bogoliubov-de Gennes universality classes is analysed in detail by means of a mapping to a scaling equation for the reflection from a quantum wire in the presence of an imaginary potential.

Spin correlations in the two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder in a magnetic field

We study the ground-state spin correlations in the gapless incommensurate regime of a S=1/2 XXZ chain and a two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder under a magnetic field, in which the gapless excitations form a Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid. We calculate numerically the two-spin correlation functions and the local magnetization in the two models using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. By fitting the numerical results for an open XXZ chain of 100 spins to correlation functions of a Gaussian model, we determine the TL-liquid parameter K and the amplitudes of the correlation functions. The value of K estimated from the fits is in excellent agreement with the exact value obtained from the Bethe ansatz. We apply the same method to the open ladder consisting of 200 spins and determine the dependence of K on the magnetization M. The K-M relation changes drastically depending on the ratio of the coupling constants in the leg and rung directions. We also discuss implications of these results to experiments on the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T_1 and dynamical spin structure factors.

Edge Singularity for the Optically Induced Kondo Effect in a Quantum Dot

We analyze the optically induced Kondo effect in the absorption spectrum for a quantum dot with an even number of electrons, for which the Kondo effect does not occur in the ground state. The Kondo exchange couplings generated for photo-excited states can be either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic, which may result in different types of the edge singularities, depending on the microscopic parameters of the dot. We discuss critical properties in the spectrum by using low-energy effective field theory.

Localization and delocalization in dirty superconducting wires

We present Fokker-Planck equations that describe transport of heat and spin in dirty unconventional superconducting quantum wires. Four symmetry classes are distinguished, depending on the presence or absence of time-reversal and spin rotation invariance. In the absence of spin-rotation symmetry, heat transport is anomalous in that the mean conductance decays like $1/\sqrt{L}$ instead of exponentially fast for large enough length $L$ of the wire. The Fokker-Planck equations in the presence of time-reversal symmetry are solved exactly and the mean conductance for quasiparticle transport is calculated for the crossover from the diffusive to the localized regime.

Numerical renormalization-group study of spin correlations in one-dimensional random spin chains

We calculate the ground-state two-spin correlation functions of spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg chains with random exchange couplings using the real-space renormalization group scheme. We extend the conventional scheme to take account of the contribution of local higher multiplet excitations in each decimation step. This extended scheme can provide highly accurate numerical data for large systems. The random average of staggered spin correlations of the chains with random antiferromagnetic (AF) couplings shows algebraic decay like $1/r^2$, which verifies the Fisher's analytic results. For chains with random ferromagnetic (FM) and AF couplings, the random average of generalized staggered correlations is found to decay more slowly than a power-law, in the form close to $1/\ln(r)$. The difference between the distribution functions of the spin correlations of the random AF chains and of the random FM-AF chains is also discussed.

Nonuniversality in quantum wires with off-diagonal disorder: a geometric point of view

It is shown that, in the scaling regime, transport properties of quantum wires with off-diagonal disorder are described by a family of scaling equations that depend on two parameters: the mean free path and an additional continuous parameter. The existing scaling equation for quantum wires with off-diagonal disorder [Brouwer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 862 (1998)] is a special point in this family. Both parameters depend on the details of the microscopic model. Since there are two parameters involved, instead of only one, localization in a wire with off-diagonal disorder is not universal. We take a geometric point of view and show that this nonuniversality follows from the fact that the group of transfer matrices is not semi-simple. Our results are illustrated with numerical simulations for a tight-binding model with random hopping amplitudes.

Dynamical spin correlations in Heisenberg ladder under magnetic field and correlation functions in SO(5) ladder

The zero-temperature dynamical spin-spin correlation functions are calculated for the spin-1/2 two-leg Heisenberg ladder in a magnetic field above the lower critical field Hc1. The dynamical structure factors are calculated which exhibit both massless and massive excitations. These modes appear in different sectors characterized by the parity in the rung direction and by the momentum in the direction of the chains. The structure factors have power-law singularities at the lower edges of their support. The results are also applicable to spin-1 Heisenberg chain. The implications are briefly discussed for various correlation functions and the pi-resonance in the SO(5) symmetric ladder model.

Density of states in coupled chains with off-diagonal disorder

We compute the density of states (d.o.s.) in N coupled chains with random hopping. At zero energy, the d.o.s. shows a singularity that strongly depends on the parity of N. For odd N, the d.o.s. is proportional to 1/(E (\ln |E|)^3), with and without time-reversal symmetry. For even N, the d.o.s. is proportional to \ln |E| in the presence of time-reversal symmetry, while there is a pseudogap, d.o.s. proportional to E \ln |E|, in the absence of time-reversal symmetry.

Phenomenology of the superconducting state in Sr2RuO4

The symmetry of the superconducting phase of Sr2RuO4 is identified as the odd-parity pairing state d(k)=\hat{z}(k_x \pm i k_y) based on recent experiments. The experimental evidence for the so-called orbital dependent superconductivity leads to a single-band description of superconductivity based on spin fluctuation mechanism. It is shown that the state \hat{z}(k_x \pm i k_y) can be stabilized by the spin fluctuation feedback mechanism analogous to the A-phase in 3He and by spin-orbit coupling effects.

Anderson localization due to random magnetic field in two dimensions

Results of large-scale numerical simulations are reported on the Anderson localization in a two-dimensional square lattice tight-binding model with random flux. Localization lengths, fluctuations of the conductance, and the density of states are computed for quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Numerical results indicate that the model exhibits the same critical behavior as the one studied by Gade and Wegner. It is argued that all the states except a zero-energy state are localized and the density of states has a singularity in the center of the band. The energy scale below which the density of states increases is found to be extremely small.

Josephson current carried by Andreev levels in superconducting quantum point contacts

The dc Josephson effect in a superconducting quantum point contact, where supercurrent flows through a small number of channels, is reviewd. The central role of Andreev levels is emphasized which carry the whole supercurrent in short symmetric Josephson junctions including tunnel junctions. A simple intuitive view of the dc Josephson effect in a quantum point contact is given in terms of multiple Andreev reflections. The quantization of the critical current in superconducting quantum point contacts is briefly discussed.
