Brazilian Report on Dark Matter 2024

One of the key scientific objectives for the next decade is to uncover the nature of dark matter (DM). We should continue prioritizing targets such as weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), Axions, and other low-mass dark matter candidates to improve our chances of achieving it. A varied and ongoing portfolio of experiments spanning different scales and detection methods is essential to maximize our chances of discovering its composition. This report paper provides an updated overview of the Brazilian community's activities in dark matter and dark sector physics over the past years with a view for the future. It underscores the ongoing need for financial support for Brazilian groups actively engaged in experimental research to sustain the Brazilian involvement in the global search for dark matter particles

Seesaw Limit of the Nelson-Barr Mechanism

We investigate how the solution to the strong CP problem and the explanation for the observed fermion mass hierarchies can be intrinsically related. Specifically, we explore the Nelson-Barr mechanism and identify its "seesaw limit", where light quark masses are suppressed by large CP-violating terms. Upon adding three (two) vector-like quarks that mix with the down-type (up-type) quark sector of the Standard Model, we demonstrate how the lack of CP violation in the strong sector and the observed quark mass hierarchy can be simultaneously achieved.

Axion-Photon Interaction from Nonminimal Dimension-5 Lorentz-Violating Operators

In this paper, we discuss various possible schemes for the perturbative generation of the axion-photon interaction term in different Lorentz-breaking extensions of QED, involving operators with mass dimensions up to 5. We demonstrate explicitly that there are only a few schemes allowing to generate a finite axion-photon interaction term from one-loop radiative corrections, and within all these schemes, the generated term turns out to be ambiguous.

Jets and Photons Spectroscopy of Higgs-ALP Interactions

Axion-like particles (ALPs) and Higgs bosons can interact in scalar sectors beyond the Standard Model, leading the Higgs boson to decay into pairs of gluons and photons through the ALP interaction and giving rise to resonances in the decay products of the process $h\to aa\to gg+γγ$, resembling a spectral lines analysis. We explore this signature to constrain an ALP effective field theory formulation and show that the forthcoming runs of the LHC will be capable to probe the ALP-Higgs interaction in the ALP mass range from 0.5 to 60 GeV using an automatized search strategy that adapts to different ALP masses in inclusive jets plus photons final states. Such interaction can also be tested in mass regions where the two and four-photon search channels are currently ineffective.

Brazilian Community Report on Dark Matter

This white paper summarizes the activities of the Brazilian community concerning dark matter physics and highlights the importance of financial support to Brazilian groups that are deeply involved in experimental endeavours. The flagships of the Brazilian dark matter program are the Cherenkov Telescope Array, DARKSIDE, SBN and LHC experiments, but we emphasize that smaller experiments such as DAMIC and CONNIE constitute important probes to dark sectors as well and should receive special attention. Small experimental projects showing the potential to probe new regions of parameter space of dark matter models are encouraged. On the theoretical and phenomenological side, some groups are devoted to astrophysical aspects such as the dark matter density profile while others explore the signature of dark matter models at colliders, direct and indirect detection experiments. In summary, the Brazilian dark matter community that was born not long ago has grown tremendously in the past years and now plays an important role in the hunt for a dark matter particle.

Fermion Mass Hierarchy and Double Seesaw Mechanism in a 3-3-1 Model with an Axion

We present a model based on the $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry that relates the mass hierarchy of the fermions with the solution to the strong CP problem through the $U(1)_{PQ}$ Peccei-Quinn symmetry. This last symmetry arises accidentally with the imposition of a discrete $Z_9$ symmetry, which also secludes the different scales in the double seesaw mechanism taking place in the neutrino sector. The symmetry breakdown is performed by three scalar triplets plus a scalar singlet hosting an axion field, whose particle excitation can be a component of dark matter. We show a mechanism where a small effective vev is generated for a scalar triplet which is supposed to have a bare mass above the energy scale where the $SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ symmetry is broken. Combined with the energy scale in which the $U(1)_{PQ}$ is broken, such a mechanism gives rise to a natural hierarchy to the fermions. Beyond the Standard Model particle content, the model predicts an invisible axion, $a$, three GeV neutrinos, $N_{iL}$, plus several new particles at the TeV scale which are: five vector bosons, $U^\pm$, $V^0$, $V^{0\dagger}$, and $Z^\prime$; one up-type $U$, and two down-type $D_a$ quarks; and at least a CP-even, $H_1$, plus non-hermitian neutral, $ϕ^0$, $ϕ^{0\dagger}$, scalar bosons. The model may be tested by looking for the possible production of such particles at the LHC.

Hierarchical Fermions and Detectable $Z^\prime$ from Effective Two-Higgs-Triplet 3-3-1 Model

We develop a ${\rm SU}(3)_C\otimes {\rm SU}(3)_L\otimes {\rm U}(1)_X$ model where the number of fermion generations is fixed by cancellation of gauge anomalies, being a type of 3-3-1 model with new charged leptons. Similarly to the economical 3-3-1 models, symmetry breaking is achieved effectively with two scalar triplets so that the spectrum of scalar particles at the TeV scale contains just two CP even scalars, one of which is the recently discovered Higgs boson, plus a charged scalar. Such a scalar sector is simpler than the one in the Two Higgs Doublet Model, hence more attractive for phenomenological studies, and has no FCNC mediated by scalars except for the ones induced by the mixing of SM fermions with heavy fermions. We identify a global residual symmetry of the model which guarantees mass degeneracies and some massless fermions whose masses need to be generated by the introduction of effective operators. The fermion masses so generated require less fine-tuning for most of the SM fermions and FCNC are naturally suppressed by the small mixing between the third family of quarks and the rest. The effective setting is justified by an ultraviolet completion of the model from which the effective operators emerge naturally. A detailed particle mass spectrum is presented, and an analysis of the $Z^\prime$ production at the LHC run II is performed to show that it could be easily detected by considering the invariant mass and transverse momentum distributions in the dimuon channel.

A White Paper on keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter

We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. The paper ends with an extensive review of current and future astrophysical and laboratory searches, highlighting new ideas and their experimental challenges, as well as future perspectives for the discovery of sterile neutrinos.

Generation of higher derivatives operators and electromagnetic wave propagation in a Lorentz-violation scenario

We study the perturbative generation of higher-derivative operators as corrections to the photon effective action, which are originated from a Lorentz violation background. Such corrections are obtained, at one-loop order, through the proper-time method, using the zeta function regularization. We focus over the lowest order corrections and investigate their influence in the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the vacuum, in the presence of a strong, constant magnetic field. This is a setting of experimental relevance, since it bases active efforts to measure non linear electromagnetic effects. After surprising cancellations of Lorentz violating corrections to the Maxwell's equation, we show that no effects of the kind of Lorentz violation we consider can be detected in such a context.

Axion Like Particles and the Inverse Seesaw Mechanism

Light pseudoscalars known as axion like particles (ALPs) may be behind physical phenomena like the Universe transparency to ultra-energetic photons, the soft $γ$-ray excess from the Coma cluster, and the 3.5 keV line. We explore the connection of these particles with the inverse seesaw (ISS) mechanism for neutrino mass generation. We propose a very restrictive setting where the scalar field hosting the ALP is also responsible for generating the ISS mass scales through its vacuum expectation value on gravity induced nonrenormalizable operators. A discrete gauge symmetry protects the theory from the appearance of overly strong gravitational effects and discrete anomaly cancellation imposes strong constraints on the order of the group. The anomalous U$(1)$ symmetry leading to the ALP is an extended lepton number and the protective discrete symmetry can be always chosen as a subgroup of a combination of the lepton number and the baryon number.

Non-perturbative fixed points and renormalization group improved effective potential

The stability conditions of a renormalization group improved effective potential have been discussed in the case of scalar QED and QCD with a colorless scalar. We calculate the same potential in these models assuming the existence of non-perturbative fixed points associated to a conformal phase. In the case of scalar QED the barrier of instability found previously is barely displaced as we approach the fixed point, and in the case of QCD with a colorless scalar not only the barrier is changed but the local minimum of the potential is also changed.

A compact 341 model at TeV scale

We build a gauge model based on the SU(3)_c x SU(4)_L x U(1)_X symmetry where the scalar spectrum needed to generate gauge boson and fermion masses has a smaller scalar content than usually assumed in literature. We compute the running of its abelian gauge coupling and show that a Landau pole shows up at the TeV scale, a fact that we use to consistently implement those fermion masses that are not generated by Yukawa interactions, including neutrino masses. This is appropriately achieved by non renormalizable effective operators, suppressed by the Landau pole scale. Also, SU(3)_c x SU(3)_L x U(1)_N models embedded in this gauge structure are bound to be strongly coupled at this same energy scale, contrary to what is generally believed, and neutrino mass generation is rather explained through the same effective operators used in the larger gauge group. Besides, their nice features, as the existence of cold dark matter candidates and the ability to reproduce the observed standard model Higgs-like phenomenology, are automatically inherited by our model. Finally, our results imply that this model is constrained to be observed or discarded soon, since it must be realized at the currently probed energy scale in LHC.

Is There a Hidden Principle in the Higgs Boson Decay to Photons?

It is remarkable that the measured Higgs boson mass is so close to the value which maximizes the Higgs decay rate to photons as predicted by the Standard Model. In this work we explore the consequences to assume that an $\sim 125$ GeV Higgs boson mass is not accidental, but fixed by some fundamental principle that enforces it to maximize its decay rate into photons. The principle is motivated by the evidence that only a very small volume of the parameters space of the Standard Model, which contains their measured values, could lead to a maximal Higgs boson with that mass. If the principle actually holds, several Standard Model features get fixed, as the number of fermion families, quark colors, and the CP nature of the new boson, for example. We also illustrate how such principle can place strong bounds on new physics scenarios as a Higgs dark portal model and a Two Higgs Doublet Model.

The Quest for an Intermediate-Scale Accidental Axion and Further ALPs

The recent detection of the cosmic microwave background polarimeter experiment BICEP2 of tensor fluctuations in the B-mode power spectrum basically excludes all plausible axion models where its decay constant is above $10^{13}$ GeV. Moreover, there are strong theoretical, astrophysical, and cosmological motivations for models involving, in addition to the axion, also axion-like particles (ALPs), with decay constants in the intermediate scale range, between $10^9$ GeV and $10^{13}$ GeV. Here, we present a general analysis of models with an axion and further ALPs and derive bounds on the relative size of the axion and ALP photon (and electron) coupling. We discuss what we can learn from measurements of the axion and ALP photon couplings about the fundamental parameters of the underlying ultraviolet completion of the theory. For the latter we consider extensions of the Standard Model in which the axion and the ALP(s) appear as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons from the breaking of global chiral $U(1)$ (Peccei-Quinn (PQ)) symmetries, occuring accidentally as low energy remnants from exact discrete symmetries. In such models, the axion and the further ALP are protected from disastrous explicit symmetry breaking effects due to Planck-scale suppressed operators. The scenarios considered exploit heavy right handed neutrinos getting their mass via PQ symmetry breaking and thus explain the small mass of the active neutrinos via a seesaw relation between the electroweak and an intermediate PQ symmetry breaking scale. We show some models that can accommodate simultaneously an axion dark matter candidate, an ALP explaining the anomalous transparency of the universe for $γ$-rays, and an ALP explaining the recently reported 3.55 keV gamma line from galaxies and clusters of galaxies, if the respective decay constants are of intermediate scale.

Generation of Axion-Like Couplings via Quantum Corrections in a Lorentz Violating Background

Light pseudoscalars, or axion like particles (ALPs), are much studied due to their potential relevance to the fields of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The most relevant coupling of ALPs from the viewpoint of current experimental searches is to the photon: in this work, we study the generation of this coupling as an effect of quantum corrections, originated from an underlying Lorentz violating background. Most interestingly, we show that the interaction so generated turns out to be Lorentz invariant, thus mimicking the standard ALPs coupling to the photon that is considered in the experiments. This consideration implies that violations of spacetime symmetries, much studied as possible consequences of physics in very high energy scales, might infiltrate in other realms of physics in unsuspected ways. Additionally, we conjecture that a similar mechanism can also generate Lorentz invariant couplings involving scalar particles and photons, playing a possible role in the phenomenology of Higgs bosons.

A Model with Chiral Quarks of Electric Charges -4/3 and 5/3

We present a new model based on the SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) symmetry, in which there is a new consistent set of chiral fermion fields that renders the model free from anomalies. The new fermions do not share the usual family structure of the Standard Model and some of them have exotic electric charges, as the quarks X and Y with electric charge 5/3 and -4/3, respectively. Interestingly, the model contains a new heavy neutral lepton which may be a dark matter candidate. Two Higgs doublets are present in our construction, so that two CP even scalars are present in the model particle spectrum. One of them is similar to Standard Model Higgs boson, while the other one couples mainly with the new exotic fermions. We performed a discovery analysis showing that the 8 TeV LHC can find the Y quark from single and pair production with masses from 300 GeV up to ~ 750 GeV. We also show that the new spectrum does not contribute significantly to the oblique EW parameters, and that dangerous flavor changing neutral currents are suppressed. Characteristic signatures from the other new fermions in the model are also commented.

An $S_3$ Model for Lepton Mass Matrices with Nearly Minimal Texture

We propose a simple extension of the electroweak standard model based on the discrete $S_3$ symmetry that is capable of realizing a nearly minimal Fritzsch-type texture for the Dirac mass matrices of both charged leptons and neutrinos. This is achieved with the aid of additional $Z_5$ and $Z_3$ symmetries, one of which can be embedded in $U(1)_{B-L}$. Five complex scalar singlet fields are introduced in addition to the SM with right-handed neutrinos. Although more general, the modified texture of the model retains the successful features of the minimal texture without fine-tuning; namely, it accommodates the masses and mixing of the leptonic sector and relates the emergence of large leptonic mixing angles with the seesaw mechanism. For large deviations of the minimal texture, both quasidegenerate spectrum or inverted hierarchy are allowed for neutrino masses.

Jets Plus Same-Sign Dileptons Signatures from Fermionic Leptoquarks at the LHC

Within the 3-3-1 model framework, we consider the production and decay of fermionic leptoquarks into a striking experimental signature at the LHC: a narrow resonance at the $b$ jet plus same-sign dileptons channel. The data already accumulated by the LHC collaborations may hide a large number of events associated to the production and decay of such exotic quarks, allowing one to investigate large portions of the parameters space of the model. The observation or not of such events would shed light on the construction of models presenting heavy exotic quarks.
