Nuclear asymmetry energy and isovector stiffness within the effective surface approximation

The isoscalar and isovector particle densities and the surface tension coefficients at the average binding energy are used to derive analytical expressions of the neutron skin thickness and the isovector stiffness of sharp edged proton-neutron asymmetric nuclei. For most Skyrme forces these quantities are significantly larger than the well known ones. Using the analytical isovector surface energy constants in the framework of the hydrodynamical and the Fermi-liquid droplet models the mean energies and the sum rules of the isovector giant dipole resonances are in fair agreement with the experimental data.

Chaoticity and Shell Effects in the Nearest-Neighbor Distributions

Statistics of the single-particle levels in a deformed Woods-Saxon potential is analyzed in terms of the Poisson and Wigner nearest-neighbor distributions for several deformations and multipolarities of its surface distortions. We found the significant differences of all the distributions with a fixed value of the angular momentum projection of the particle, more closely to the Wigner distribution, in contrast to the full spectra with Poisson-like behavior. Important shell effects are observed in the nearest neighbor spacing distributions, the larger the smaller deformations of the surface multipolarities.

Shell structure and orbit bifurcations in finite fermion systems

We first give an overview of the shell-correction method which was developed by V. M. Strutinsky as a practicable and efficient approximation to the general selfconsistent theory of finite fermion systems suggested by A. B. Migdal and collaborators. Then we present in more detail a semiclassical theory of shell effects, also developed by Strutinsky following original ideas of M. Gutzwiller. We emphasize, in particular, the influence of orbit bifurcations on shell structure. We first give a short overview of semiclassical trace formulae, which connect the shell oscillations of a quantum system with a sum over periodic orbits of the corresponding classical system, in what is usually called the "periodic orbit theory". We then present a case study in which the gross features of a typical double-humped nuclear fission barrier, including the effects of mass asymmetry, can be obtained in terms of the shortest periodic orbits of a cavity model with realistic deformations relevant for nuclear fission. Next we investigate shell structures in a spheroidal cavity model which is integrable and allows for far-going analytical computation. We show, in particular, how period-doubling bifurcations are closely connected to the existence of the so-called "superdeformed" energy minimum which corresponds to the fission isomer of actinide nuclei. Finally, we present a general class of radial power-law potentials which approximate well the shape of a Woods-Saxon potential in the bound region, give analytical trace formulae for it and discuss various limits (including the harmonic oscillator and the spherical box potentials).

Asymmetry and Spin-Orbit Effects in Binding Energy in the Effective Nuclear Surface Approximation

Isoscalar and isovector particle densities are derived analytically by using the approximation of a sharp edged nucleus within the local energy density approach with the proton-neutron asymmetry and spin-orbit effects. Equations for the effective nuclear-surface shapes as collective variables are derived up to the higher order corrections in the form of the macroscopic boundary conditions. The analytical expressions for the isoscalar and isovector tension coefficients of the nuclear surface binding energy and the finite-size corrections to the $β$ stability line are obtained.

Mean first passage time for fission potentials having structure

A schematic model of over-damped motion is presented which permits one to calculate the mean first passage time for nuclear fission. Its asymptotic value may exceed considerably the lifetime suggested by Kramers rate formula, which applies only to very special, favorable potentials and temperatures. The additional time obtained in the more general case is seen to allow for a considerable increment in the emission of light particles.

Analytical perturbative approach to periodic orbits in the homogeneous quartic oscillator potential

We present an analytical calculation of periodic orbits in the homogeneous quartic oscillator potential. Exploiting the properties of the periodic Lam{é} functions that describe the orbits bifurcated from the fundamental linear orbit in the vicinity of the bifurcation points, we use perturbation theory to obtain their evolution away from the bifurcation points. As an application, we derive an analytical semiclassical trace formula for the density of states in the separable case, using a uniform approximation for the pitchfork bifurcations occurring there, which allows for full semiclassical quantization. For the non-integrable situations, we show that the uniform contribution of the bifurcating period-one orbits to the coarse-grained density of states competes with that of the shortest isolated orbits, but decreases with increasing chaoticity parameter $α$.

Periodic Orbits and Deformed Shell Structure

Relationship between quantum shell structure and classical periodic orbits is briefly reviewed on the basis of semi-classical trace formula. Using the spheroidal cavity model, it is shown that three-dimensional periodic orbits, which are born out of bifurcation of planar orbits at large prolate deformations, generate the superdeformed shell structure.

Symmetry Breaking and Bifurcations in the Periodic Orbit Theory: II -- Spheroidal Cavity --

We derive a semiclassical trace formula for the level density of the three-dimensional spheroidal cavity. To overcome the divergences and discontinuities occurring at bifurcation points and in the spherical limit, the trace integrals over the action-angle variables are performed using an improved stationary phase method. The resulting semiclassical level density oscillations and shell energies are in good agreement with quantum-mechanical results. We find that the births of three-dimensional orbits through the bifurcations of planar orbits in the equatorial plane lead to considerable enhancement of shell effect for superdeformed shapes.

Periodic-Orbit Bifurcations and Superdeformed Shell Structure

We have derived a semiclassical trace formula for the level density of the three-dimensional spheroidal cavity. To overcome the divergences occurring at bifurcations and in the spherical limit, the trace integrals over the action-angle variables were performed using an improved stationary phase method. The resulting semiclassical level density oscillations and shell-correction energies are in good agreement with quantum-mechanical results. We find that the bifurcations of some dominant short periodic orbits lead to an enhancement of the shell structure for "superdeformed" shapes related to those known from atomic nuclei.

Symmetry Breaking and Bifurcations in the Periodic Orbit Theory: I: Elliptic Billiard

We derive an analytical trace formula for the level density of the two-dimensional elliptic billiard using an improved stationary phase method. The result is a continuous function of the deformation parameter (eccentricity) through all bifurcation points of the short diameter orbit and its repetitions, and possesses the correct limit of the circular billiard at zero eccentricity. Away from the circular limit and the bifurcations, it reduces to the usual (extended) Gutzwiller trace formula which for the leading-order families of periodic orbits is identical to the result of Berry and Tabor. We show that the circular disk limit of the diameter-orbit contribution is also reached through contributions from closed (periodic and non-periodic) orbits of hyperbolic type with an even number of reflections from the boundary. We obtain the Maslov indices depending on deformation and energy in terms of the phases of the complex error and Airy functions. We find enhancement of the amplitudes near the common bifurcation points of both short-diameter and hyperbolic orbits. The calculated semiclassical level densities and shell energies are in good agreement with the quantum mechanical ones.

Super Shell Structure of the Magnetic Susceptibility

The magnetic susceptibility of electrons confined to a spherical cavity or a circular billiard shows slow oscillations as a function of the number of electrons, which are a new manifestation of the Super Shell Structure found in the free energy of metal clusters. The relationship of the oscillations of the two different quantities is analyzed by means of semiclassical calculations, which are in quantitative agreement with quantal results.
