Spin-Hall current and spin polarization in an electrically biased SNS Josephson junction

Periodic in time spin-Hall current and spin polarization induced by a dc electric bias has been calculated in a superconductor-normal 2DEG-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction. We assumed that the band energies of electrons in the normal system are splitted due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The transport parameters have been calculated within the diffusion approximation and using perturbation expansion over a small SN contact transparency. We found out that in contrast to the stationary Josephson effect, the spin-Hall current does not turn to zero. Besides a direct proximity effect caused by Cooper pair's transition into a triplet state, the spin current and polarization are also driven by a periodic electric field associated with the charge imbalance.

Equilibrium circular photogalvanic effect in a hybrid superconductor-semiconductor system

A dc electric current can be induced in a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor system under illumination it by a circularly polarized light with the frequency below the energy of semiconductor interband transitions. In conditions when the light beam is unable to create real electron-hole excitations, this phenomenon is reminiscent of the Meissner effect in the static magnetic field. Such an effect can be employed in systems combining cavity photons and superconducting quantum circuits.

Aharonov-Casher oscillations of spin current through a multichannel mesoscopic ring

The Aharonov-Casher (AC) oscillations of spin current through a 2D ballistic ring in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction and external magnetic field has been calculated using the semiclassical path integral method. For classically chaotic trajectories the Fokker-Planck equation determining dynamics of the particle spin polarization has been derived. On the basis of this equation an analytic expression for the spin conductance has been obtained taking into account a finite width of the ring arms carrying large number of conducting channels. It was shown that the finite width results in a broadening and damping of spin current AC oscillations. We found that an external magnetic field leads to appearance of new nondiagonal components of the spin conductance, allowing thus by applying a rather weak magnetic field to change a direction of the transmitted spin current polarization.

AC Josephson Effect Induced by Spin Injection

Pure spin currents can be injected and detected in conductors via ferromagnetic contacts. We consider the case when the conductors become superconducting. A DC pure spin current flowing in one superconducting wire towards another superconductor via a ferromagnet contact induces AC voltage oscillations caused by Josephson tunneling of condensate electrons. Quasiparticles simultaneously counterflow resulting in zero total electric current through the contact. The Josephson oscillations can be accompanied by Carlson-Goldman collective modes leading to a resonance in the voltage oscillation amplitude.

Inverse Spin Hall Effect in SNS Josephson Junctions

We consider DC supercurrents in SNS junctions. Spin-orbit coupling in combination with Zeeman fields can induce an effective vector potential in the normal conductor. As a consequence, an out-of-plane spin-density varying along the transverse direction causes a longitudinal phase difference between the superconducting terminals. The resulting equilibrium phase coherent supercurrent is analogue to the non-equilibrium inverse spin Hall effect in normal conductors. We explicitly compute the effect for the Rashba spin orbit coupling in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with an inhomogeneous perpendicular Zeeman field.

Semiclassical path integral approach on spin relaxations in narrow wires

The semiclassical path integral method has been applied for studying spin relaxation in a narrow 2D strip with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Our numerical calculations show a good agreement with the experimental data, although some features of experimental results are not clear yet. We also calculated the relaxation of a uniform spin-density distribution in the ballistic regime of very narrow wires. With the decreasing wire width, the spin polarization exhibits a transition from the exponential decay to the oscillatory Bessel-like relaxation. The SPI method has been also employed to calculate the relaxation of the particularly long-lived helix mode. A good agreement has been found with calculations based on the diffusion theory.

Spin-Hall effects in a Josephson contact

The Josephson tunneling through a 2D normal contact with the spin-orbit split conduction band has been studied in the diffusive regime. Linearized Usadel equations for triplet components of the pairing function revealed a striking similarity to the equations of spin diffusion driven by the electric field in normal metals. Consequently, we predict that the out-of-plane spin-Hall polarization accumulates towards lateral sample edges and the in-plane polarization is finite throughout the entire normal region. At the same time, the spin-Hall current is absent in the considered case of the stationary Josephson effect.

Spin orientation and spin-Hall effect induced by tunneling electrons

It is shown that a flux of unpolarized electrons across a symmetric double barrier quantum well induces a spin polarization inside the well. Besides, the transmitted current acquires a spin polarized component and the spin-Hall current flows in the planar direction. These phenomena are due to a combined effect of Dresselhaus interaction and the spin-orbit interaction induced by gradients of heterostructure material parameters. In contrast to previous studies of the spin filtering effect, we predict that it can be observed in case of an isotropic distribution of incident electrons.

Spin Injection in Quantum Wells with Spatially Dependent Rashba Interaction

We consider Rashba spin-orbit effects on spin transport driven by an electric field in semiconductor quantum wells. We derive spin diffusion equations that are valid when the mean free path and the Rashba spin-orbit interaction vary on length scales larger than the mean free path in the weak spin-orbit coupling limit. From these general diffusion equations, we derive boundary conditions between regions of different spin-orbit couplings. We show that spin injection is feasible when the electric field is perpendicular to the boundary between two regions. When the electric field is parallel to the boundary, spin injection only occurs when the mean free path changes within the boundary, in agreement with the recent work by Tserkovnyak et al. [cond-mat/0610190].

Spin-Hall interface resistance in terms of Landauer type spin dipoles

We considered the nonequlibrium spin dipoles induced around spin independent elastic scatterers by the intrinsic spin-Hall effect associated with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The normal to 2DEG spin polarization has been calculated in the diffusion range around the scatterer. We found that although around each impurity this polarization is finite, the corresponding macroscopic spin density, obtained via averaging of individual spin dipole distributions over impurity positions is zero in the bulk. At the same time, the spin density is finite near the boundary of 2DEG, except for a special case of a hard wall boundary. The boundary value of the spin polarization can be associated with the interface spin-Hall resistance determining the additional energy dissipation due to spin accumulation.

Spin cloud induced around an elastic scatterer by the intrinsic spin-Hall effect

Similar to the Landauer electric dipole created around an impurity by the electric current, a spin polarized cloud of electrons can be induced by the intrinsic spin-Hall effect near a spin independent elastic scatterer. It is shown that in the ballistic range around the impurity, such a cloud appears in the case of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, even though the bulk spin-Hall current is absent.

Spin-Hall effect on edge magnetization and electric conductance of a 2D semiconductor strip

The intrinsic spin-Hall effect on spin accumulation and electric conductance in a diffusive regime of a 2D electron gas has been studied for a 2D strip of a finite width. It is shown that the spin polarization near the flanks of the strip, as well as the electric current in the longitudinal direction exhibit damped oscillations as a function of the width and strength of the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction. Cubic terms of this interaction are crucial for spin accumulation near the edges. As expected, no effect on the spin accumulation and electric conductance have been found in case of Rashba spin-orbit interaction.

Strain-Induced Coupling of Spin Current to Nanomechanical Oscillations

We propose a setup which allows to couple the electron spin degree of freedom to the mechanical motions of a nanomechanical system not involving any of the ferromagnetic components. The proposed method employs the strain induced spin-orbit interaction of electrons in narrow gap semiconductors. We have shown how this method can be used for detection and manipulation of the spin flow through a suspended rod in a nanomechanical device.

Spin-Hall conductivity of a disordered 2D electron gas with Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction

The spin-Hall conductivity of a disordered 2D electron gas has been calculated for an arbitrary spin-orbit interaction. We have found that in the diffusive regime of electron transport, in accordance with previous calculations, the dc spin-Hall conductivity of a homogeneous system turns to zero due to impurity scattering when the spin-orbit coupling is represented only by the Rashba interaction. However, when the Dresselhaus interaction is taken into account, the spin-Hall current is not zero. We also considered the spin-Hall currents induced by an inhomogeneous electric field. It is shown that a time dependent electric charge induces a vortex of spin-Hall currents.

Generation of spin current and polarization under dynamic gate control of spin-orbit interaction in low-dimensional semiconductor systems

Based on the Keldysh formalism, the Boltzmann kinetic equation and the drift diffusion equation have been derived for studying spin polarization flow and spin accumulation under effect of the time dependent Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a semiconductor quantum well. The time dependent Rashba interaction is provided by time dependent electric gates of appropriate shapes. Several examples of spin manipulation by gates have been considered. Mechanisms and conditions for obtaining the stationary spin density and the induced rectified DC spin current are studied.

Spin relaxation dynamics of quasiclassical electrons in ballistic quantum dots with strong spin-orbit coupling

We performed path integral simulations of spin evolution controlled by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the semiclassical regime for chaotic and regular quantum dots. The spin polarization dynamics have been found to be strikingly different from the D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) spin relaxation in bulk systems. Also an important distinction have been found between long time spin evolutions in classically chaotic and regular systems. In the former case the spin polarization relaxes to zero within relaxation time much larger than the DP relaxation, while in the latter case it evolves to a time independent residual value. The quantum mechanical analysis of the spin evolution based on the exact solution of the Schroedinger equation with Rashba SOI has confirmed the results of the classical simulations for the circular dot, which is expected to be valid in general regular systems. In contrast, the spin relaxation down to zero in chaotic dots contradicts to what have to be expected from quantum mechanics. This signals on importance at long time of the mesoscopic echo effect missed in the semiclassical simulations.

Spin Current Generation and Detection in the Presence of AC Gate

We predict that in a narrow gap III-V semiconductor quantum well or a wire an observable spin current can be generated with a time dependent gate to modify the Rashba spin-orbit coupling constant. Methods to rectify the so generated AC current are discussed. An all-electric method of spin current detection is suggested, which measures the voltage on the gate in the vicinity of a 2D electron gas carrying a time dependent spin current. Both the generation and detection do not involve any optical or magnetic mediators.

Quantum oscillations of spin current through a III-V semiconductor loop

We have investigated the transport of spin polarization through a classically chaotic semiconductor loop with a strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We found that if the escape time of a particle is long enough, the configuration averaged spin conductance oscillates strongly with the geometric spin phase. We predict a sizable rotation of spin polarization along its flowing path across the loop from the injector to the collector. We have also discovered a quantized universal spin relaxation in a 2D reservoir connected to such a semiconductor loop.
