Renormalization group improvement of the effective potential in a (1+1) dimensional Gross-Neveu model

In this work, we investigate the consequences of the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) in the determination of the effective potential and the study of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) in an Gross-Neveu (GN) model with N fermions fields in (1+1) dimensional space-time, which can be applied as a model to describe certain properties of the polyacetylene. The classical Lagrangian of the model is scale invariant, but radiative corrections to the effective potential can lead to dimensional transmutation, when a dimensionless parameter (coupling constant) of the classical Lagrangian is exchanged for a dimensionful one, a dynamically generated mass for the fermion fields. For the model we are considering, perturbative calculations of the effective potential and renormalization group functions up to three loops are available, but we use the RGE and the leading logs approximation to calculate an improved effective potential, including contributions up to six loops orders. We then perform a systematic study of the general aspects of DSB in the GN model with finite N, comparing the results we obtain with the ones derived from the original unimproved effective potential we started with.

Effective potential and dynamical symmetry breaking up to five loops in a massless abelian Higgs model

In this paper, we investigate the application of the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) in the determination of the effective potential and the study of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) in a massless Abelian Higgs (AH) model with an N-component complex scalar field in (3+1) dimensional spacetime. The classical Lagrangian of this model has scale invariance, which can be broken by radiative corrections to the effective potential. It is possible to calculate the effective potential using the RGE and the renormalization group functions that are obtained directly from loop calculations of the model and, using the leading logs approximation, information about higher loop orders can be included in the effective potential thus obtained. To show this, we use the renormalization group functions reported in the literature, obtained with a four loop calculation, and obtain a five loop approximation to the effective potential, in doing so, we have to properly take into account the fact that the model has multiple scales, and convert the functions that were originally calculated in the minimal subtraction (MS) renormalization scheme to another scheme which is adequate for the RGE method. This result is then used to study the DSB, and we present evidence for a rich structure of classical vacua, depending on the value of gauge coupling constant and number of scalar fields, which are considered as free parameters.

Effective Superpotential and the Renormalization Group Equation in a Supersymmetric Chern-Simons-Matter Model in the Superfield Formalism

We studied the Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) mechanism in a supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in $\left(2+1\right)$ dimensions coupled to $N$ matter superfields in the superfield formalism. For this purpose, we developed a mechanism to calculate the effective superpotencial $K_{\mathrm{eff}}\left(σ_{\mathrm{cl}},α\right)$, where $σ_{\mathrm{cl}}$ is a background superfield, and $α$ a gauge-fixing parameter that is introduced in the quantization process. The possible dependence of the effective potential on the gauge parameter have been studied in the context of quantum field theory. We developed the formalism of the Nielsen identities in the superfield language, which is the appropriate formalism to study DSB when the effective potential is gauge dependent. We also discuss how to calculate the effective superpotential via the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) from the knowledge of the renormalization group functions of the theory, i.e., $β$ functions and anomalous dimensions $γ$. We perform a detailed calculation of these functions at two loops, finding that these do not depend on $α$, and therefore, by using the RGE, we calculate the effective superpotencial $K_{\mathrm{eff}}$, showing that it is also independent of $α$. Then we discuss the improvement of the calculation of $K_{\mathrm{eff}}$ by summing up leading logarithms, and we compare this improvement with the one obtained in the non supersymmetric version of the model. Finally, we study the DSB finding that it is operational for all reasonable values of the free parameters, while the improvement obtained from the RGE in general only produces a small quantitative correction in the results, instead of the more dramatic qualitative change found in non supersymmetric models.

Twisted Supersymmetry in a Deformed Wess-Zumino Model in (2+1) Dimensions

Non-anticommutative deformations have been studied in the context of supersymmetry (SUSY) in three and four space-time dimensions, and the general picture is that highly nontrivial to deform supersymmetry in a way that still preserves some of its important properties, both at the formal algebraic level (e.g., preserving the associativity of the deformed theory) as well as at the physical level (e.g., maintaining renormalizability). The Hopf algebra formalism allows the definition of algebraically consistent deformations of SUSY, but this algebraic consistency does not guarantee that physical models build upon these structures will be consistent from the physical point of view. We will investigate a deformation induced by a Drinfel'd twist of the ${\cal N}=1$ SUSY algebra in three space-time dimensions. The use of the Hopf algebra formalism allows the construction of deformed ${\cal N}=1$ SUSY algebras that should still preserve a deformed version of supersymmetry. We will construct the simplest deformed version of the Wess-Zumino model in this context, but we will show that despite the consistent algebraic structure, the model in question is not invariant under SUSY transformation and is not renormalizable. We will comment on the relation of these results with previous ones discussed in the literature regarding similar four-dimensional constructions.

Nielsen Identity and the Renormalization Group Functions in an Abelian Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Model in the Superfield Formalism

In this paper we study the Nielsen identity for the supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model in the superfield formalism, in three spacetime dimensions. The Nielsen identity is essential to understand the gauge invariance of the symmetry breaking mechanism, and it is calculated by using the BRST invariance of the model. We discuss the technical difficulties in applying this identity to the complete effective superpotential, but we show how we can study in detail the gauge independence of one part of the effective superpotential, $K_{eff}$. We calculate the renormalization group functions of the model for arbitrary gauge-fixing parameter, finding them to be independent of the gauge choice. This result can be used to argue that $K_{eff}$ also does not depend on the gauge parameter. We discuss the possibility of the extension of these results to the complete effective superpotential.

Renormalization Group Improvement and Dynamical Breaking of Symmetry in a Supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter Model

In this work, we investigate the consequences of the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) in the determination of the effective superpotential and the study of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) in an N = 1 supersymmetric theory including an Abelian Chern-Simons superfield coupled to N scalar superfields in (2+1) dimensional spacetime. The classical Lagrangian presents scale invariance, which is broken by radiative corrections to the effective superpotential. We calculate the effective superpotential up to two-loops by using the RGE and the beta functions and anomalous dimensions known in the literature. We then show how the RGE can be used to improve this calculation, by summing up properly defined series of leading logs (LL), next-to-leading logs (NLL) contributions, and so on... We conclude that even if the RGE improvement procedure can indeed be applied in a supersymmetric model, the effects of the consideration of the RGE are not so dramatic as it happens in the non-supersymmetric case.

Non-perturbative fixed points and renormalization group improved effective potential

The stability conditions of a renormalization group improved effective potential have been discussed in the case of scalar QED and QCD with a colorless scalar. We calculate the same potential in these models assuming the existence of non-perturbative fixed points associated to a conformal phase. In the case of scalar QED the barrier of instability found previously is barely displaced as we approach the fixed point, and in the case of QCD with a colorless scalar not only the barrier is changed but the local minimum of the potential is also changed.
