Quark-gluon vertex in a momentum subtraction scheme

We compute the quark-gluon vertex in quenched QCD, in the Landau gauge using an off-shell mean-field O(a)-improved fermion action. The running coupling is calculated in an `asymmetric' momentum subtraction scheme (MOM~). We obtain a crude estimate for Lambda_MSbar=170+/-65 MeV, which is considerably lower than other determinations of this quantity. However, substantial systematic errors remain.

Heavy quark distribution functions in heavy baryons

Using the Bethe-Salpeter (B-S) equations for heavy baryons Lambda_Q, Sigma_Q, Xi_Q and Omega_Q (Q=b or c), which were established in previous work, we calculate the heavy quark distribution functions in these baryons. The numerical results indicate that these distribution functions have an obvious peak at some fraction, alpha_0, of the baryon's light-cone ``plus'' momentum component carried by the heavy quark, and that as m_Q becomes heavier this peak becomes sharper and closer to 1. The dependence of the distribution functions on various input parameters in the B-S model is also discussed. The results are seen to be qualitatively similar to an existing phenomenological model.

Infinite Volume and Continuum Limits of the Landau-Gauge Gluon Propagator

We extend a previous improved action study of the Landau gauge gluon propagator, by using a variety of lattices with spacings from $a = 0.17$ to 0.41 fm, to more fully explore finite volume and discretization effects. We also extend a previously used technique for minimizing lattice artifacts, the appropriate choice of momentum variable or ``kinematic correction'', by considering it more generally as a ``tree-level correction''. We demonstrate that by using tree-level correction, determined by the tree-level behavior of the action being considered, it is possible to obtain scaling behavior over a very wide range of momenta and lattice spacings. This makes it possible to explore the infinite volume and continuum limits of the Landau-gauge gluon propagator.

Regularization-independent study of renormalized non-perturbative quenched QED

A recently proposed regularization-independent method is used for the first time to solve the renormalized fermion Schwinger-Dyson equation numerically in quenched QED$_4$. The Curtis-Pennington vertex is used to illustrate the technique and to facilitate comparison with previous calculations which used the alternative regularization schemes of modified ultraviolet cut-off and dimensional regularization. Our new results are in excellent numerical agreement with these, and so we can now conclude with confidence that there is no residual regularization dependence in these results. Moreover, from a computational point of view the regularization independent method has enormous advantages, since all integrals are absolutely convergent by construction, and so do not mix small and arbitrarily large momentum scales. We analytically predict power law behaviour in the asymptotic region, which is confirmed numerically with high precision. The successful demonstration of this efficient new technique opens the way for studies of unquenched QED to be undertaken in the near future.

Regularization-independent studies of nonperturbative field theory

We propose a regularization-independent method for studying a renormalizable field theory nonperturbatively through its Dyson-Schwinger equations. Using QED_4 as an example, we show how the coupled equations determining the nonperturbative fermion and photon propagators can be written entirely in terms of renormalized quantities, which renders the equations manifestly finite in a regularization-independent manner. As an illustration of the technique, we apply it to a study of the fermion propagator in quenched QED_4 with the Curtis-Pennington electron-photon vertex. At large momenta the mass function, and hence the anomalous mass dimension gamma_m(alpha), is calculated analytically and we find excellent agreement with previous work. Finally, we show that for the CP vertex the perturbation expansion of gamma_m(alpha) has a finite radius of convergence.

Infrared Behavior of the Gluon Propagator on a Large Volume Lattice

The first calculation of the gluon propagator using an order a^2 improved action with the corresponding order a^2 improved Landau gauge fixing condition is presented. The gluon propagator obtained from the improved action and improved Landau gauge condition is compared with earlier unimproved results on similar physical lattice volumes of 3.2^3 \times 6.4 fm^4. We find agreement between the improved propagator calculated on a coarse lattice with lattice spacing a = 0.35 fm and the unimproved propagator calculated on a fine lattice with spacing a = 0.10 fm. This motivates us to calculate the gluon propagator on a coarse large-volume lattice 5.6^3 \times 11.2 fm^4. The infrared behavior of previous studies is confirmed in this work. The gluon propagator is enhanced at intermediate momenta and suppressed at infrared momenta. Therefore the observed infrared suppression of the Landau gauge gluon propagator is not a finite volume effect.

Improved Landau Gauge Fixing and Discretisation Errors

Lattice discretisation errors in the Landau gauge condition are examined. An improved gauge fixing algorithm in which order a^2 errors are removed is presented. Order a^2 improvement of the gauge fixing condition displays the secondary benefit of reducing the size of higher-order errors. These results emphasise the importance of implementing an improved gauge fixing condition.

1/m_Q Corrections to the Bethe-Salpeter Equation for Λ_{Q} in the Diquark Picture

Corrections of order 1/m_Q (Q=b or c) to the Bethe-Salpeter (B-S) equation for Λ_Q are analyzed on the assumption that the heavy baryon Λ_Q is composed of a heavy quark and a scalar, light diquark. It is found that in addition to the one B-S scalar function in the limit m_Q -> \infty, two more scalar functions are needed at the order 1/m_Q. These can be related to the B-S scalar function in the leading order. The six form factors for the weak transition Λ_b -> Λ_c are expressed in terms of these wave functions and the results are consistent with heavy quark effective theory to order 1/m_Q. Assuming the kernel for the B-S equation in the limit m_Q -> \infty to consist of a scalar confinement term and a one-gluon-exchange term we obtain numerical solutions for the B-S wave functions, and hence for the $Λ_b \to Λ_c$ form factors to order 1/m_Q. Predictions are given for the differential and total decay widths for Λ_b -> Λ_c l \barν, and also for the nonleptonic decay widths for Λ_b -> Λ_c plus a pseudoscalar or vector meson, with QCD corrections being also included.

The quark propagator in momentum space

The quark propagator is calculated in the Landau gauge at beta=6.0. A method for removing the dominant, tree-level lattice artefacts is presented, enabling a calculation of the momentum-dependent dynamical quark mass.

Asymptotic Scaling and Infrared Behavior of the Gluon Propagator

The Landau gauge gluon propagator for the pure gauge theory is evaluated on a 32^3x64 lattice with a physical volume of (3.35^3x6.7)fm^4. Comparison with two smaller lattices at different lattice spacings allows an assessment of finite volume and finite lattice spacing errors. Cuts on the data are imposed to minimize these errors. Scaling of the gluon propagator is verified between beta=6.0 and beta=6.2. The tensor structure is evaluated and found to be in good agreement with the Landau gauge form, except at very small momentum values, where some small finite volume errors persist. A number of functional forms for the momentum dependence of the propagator are investigated. The form D(q^2)=D_ir+D_uv, where D_ir(q^2) ~ (q^2+M^2)^-ηand D_uv is an infrared regulated one-loop asymptotic form, is found to provide an adequate description of the data over the entire momentum region studied - thereby bridging the gap between the infrared confinement region and the ultraviolet asymptotic region. The best estimate for the exponent ηis 3.2(+0.1/-0.2)(+0.2/-0.3), where the first set of errors represents the uncertainty associated with varying the fitting range, while the second set of errors reflects the variation arising from different choices of infrared regulator in D_uv. Fixing the form of D_uv, we find that the mass parameter M is (1020+/-100)MeV.

Discretisation Errors in Landau Gauge on the Lattice

Lattice discretisation errors in the Landau gauge condition are examined. An improved gauge fixing algorithm in which ${\cal O}(a^2)$ errors are removed is presented. ${\cal O}(a^2)$ improvement of the gauge fixing condition improves comparison with continuum Landau gauge in two ways: 1) through the elimination of ${\cal O}(a^2)$ errors and 2) through a secondary effect of reducing the size of higher-order errors. These results emphasise the importance of implementing an improved gauge fixing condition.

Vector meson dominance and the rho meson

We discuss the properties of vector mesons, in particular the rho^0, in the context of the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model. This provides a unified framework to study several aspects of the low energy QCD sector. Firstly, we show that in the HLS model the physical photon is massless, without requiring off field diagonalization. We then demonstrate the equivalence of HLS and the two existing representations of vector meson dominance, VMD1 and VMD2, at both tree level and one loop order. Finally the S matrix pole position is shown to provide a model and process independent means of specifying the rho mass and width, in contrast to the real axis prescription currently used in the Particle Data Group tables.

Bethe-Salpeter Equation for Heavy Baryons ω_{Q}^{(*)} in the Diquark Picture

In the heavy quark limit, the heavy baryons ω_{Q}^{(*)} (ωcould be Σ, Ξor Ωand Q=b or c) are regarded as composed of a heavy quark and an axial vector, light diquark with good spin and isospin quantum numbers. Based on this diquark picture we establish the Bethe-Salpeter (B-S) equation for ω_{Q}^{(*)} in the limit where the heavy quark has infinite mass, m_Q -> \infty. It is found that in this limit there are three components in the B-S wave function for ω_{Q}^{(*)}. Assuming the kernel to consist of a scalar confinement term and a one-gluon-exchange term we derive three coupled integral equations for the three B-S scalar functions in the covariant instantaneous approximation. Numerical solutions for the three B-S scalar functions are presented, including a discussion about their dependence on the various input parameters. These solutions are applied to calculate the Isgur-Wise functions ξ(ω) and ζ(ω) for the weak transitions Ω_{b}^{(*)} \to Ω_{c}^{(*)}. Using these we give predictions for the Cabibbo-allowed nonleptonic decay widths and up-down asymmetries for Ω_{b} \to Ω_{c}^{(*)} plus a pseudoscalar or vector meson.

Chiral symmetry breaking in dimensionally regularized nonperturbative quenched QED

In this paper we study dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in dimensionally regularized quenched QED within the context of Dyson-Schwinger equations. In D < 4 dimensions the theory has solutions which exhibit chiral symmetry breaking for all values of the coupling. To begin with, we study this phenomenon both numerically and, with some approximations, analytically within the rainbow approximation in the Landau gauge. In particular, we discuss how to extract the critical coupling alpha_c = pi/3 relevant in four dimensions from the D dimensional theory. We further present analytic results for the chirally symmetric solution obtained with the Curtis-Pennington vertex as well as numerical results for solutions exhibiting chiral symmetry breaking. For these we demonstrate that, using dimensional regularization, the extraction of the critical coupling relevant for this vertex is feasible. Initial results for this critical coupling are in agreement with cut-off based work within the currently achievable numerical precision.

Lattice study of the Kink soliton and the zero-mode problem for phi4 in two dimensions

We study the $λϕ^4_{1+1}$ kink solion and the zero-mode contribution to the Kink soliton mass in regions beyond the semiclassical regime. The calculations are done in the non-trivial scaling region and where appropriate the results are compared with the continuum, semiclassical values. We show, as a function of parameter space, where the zero-mode contributions become significant.

Hidden Symmetry and Georgi's Vector Limit

We study the generation of vector meson masses in the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model of low energy QCD. After demoting the HLS to a hidden global symmetry (HGS), the rho is explicitly shown to be massless for any value of the HS parameter "a" and the chiral partner of the pion appears as the Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous breaking of the HGS, closely resembling the predictions of Georgi's vector limit.

The structure of the gluon propagator

The gluon propagator has been calculated for quenched QCD in the Landau gauge at beta=6.0 for volumes 16^3x48 and 32^3x64, and at beta=6.2 for volume 24^3x48$. The large volume and different lattice spacings allow us to identify and minimise finite volume and finite lattice spacing artefacts. We also study the tensor structure of the gluon propagator, confirming that it obeys the lattice Landau gauge condition.
