Consistency of Lambda-Lambda hypernuclear events

Highlights of Lambda-Lambda emulsion events are briefly reviewed. Given three accepted events, shell-model predictions based on p-shell Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopic studies are shown to reproduce the Lambda-Lambda (LL) binding energies of LL10Be and LL13B in terms of the LL binding energy of LL6He. Predictions for other species offer judgement on several alternative assignments of the LL13B KEK-E176 event, and on the assignments LL11Be and LL12Be suggested recently for the KEK-E373 HIDA event. The predictions of the shell model, spanning a wide range of A values, are compared with those of cluster models, where the latter are available.

Evidence for 6ΛH

Evidence for the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6ΛH is presented from the FINUDA experiment at DAΦNE, Frascati, studying (π+, π-) pairs in coincidence from the K- +6Li \rightarrow 6 H+π+ production reaction followed by 6ΛH \rightarrow 6He + π- weak decay. The production rate of 6ΛH undergoing this two-body π- decay is determined to be (2.9\pm2.0)\cdot10-6/K-. Its binding energy, evaluated jointly from production and decay, is BΛ(6ΛH) = (4.0\pm1.1) MeV with respect to 5H+Λ. A systematic difference of (0.98 \pm 0.74) MeV between BΛ values derived separately from decay and from production is tentatively assigned to the 6ΛH 0+g.s. \rightarrow 1+ excitation.

K^- nuclear potentials from in-medium chirally motivated models

A self consistent scheme for constructing K^- nuclear optical potentials from subthreshold in-medium Kbar-N s-wave scattering amplitudes is presented and applied to analysis of kaonic atoms data and to calculations of K^- quasibound nuclear states. The amplitudes are taken from a chirally motivated meson-baryon coupled-channel model, both at the Tomozawa-Weinberg leading order and at the next to leading order. Typical kaonic atoms potentials are characterized by a real part -Re V(K^-;chiral)=(85+/-5) MeV at nuclear matter density, in contrast to half this depth obtained in some derivations based on in-medium Kbar-N threshold amplitudes. The moderate agreement with data is much improved by adding complex rho- and rho^2-dependent phenomenological terms, found to be dominated by rho^2 contributions that could represent Kbar-NN -> YN absorption and dispersion, outside the scope of meson-baryon chiral models. Depths of the real potentials are then near 180 MeV. The effects of p-wave interactions are studied and found secondary to those of the dominant s-wave contributions. The in-medium dynamics of the coupled-channel model is discussed and systematic studies of K^- quasibound nuclear states are presented.

Meson Assisted Strange Dibaryons

The state of the art in dibaryons with strangeness is reviewed, including the K^{-}pp dibaryon which signals the onset of antikaon-nuclear binding. A new type of strange dibaryons is highlighted, where the primary binding mechanism is provided by strong p-wave pion interactions, as demonstrated by a quasibound (I=3/2,JP=2+) pion-hyperon-nucleon dibaryon calculation.

Nuclear medium effects from hadronic atoms

The state of the art in the study of pionic, kaonic and Sigmionic atoms, along with the in-medium nuclear interactions deduced for these hadrons, is reviewed. A special emphasis is placed on recent developments in antikaon-nuclear physics, where a strongly attractive density dependent antikaon-nuclear potential of order 150-200 MeV in nuclear matter emerges by fitting K^- atom data. This has interesting repercussions on antikaon quasibound nuclear states, on the composition of strange hadronic matter and on kaon condensation in self bound hadronic systems.

Chirally motivated K^- nuclear potentials

In-medium subthreshold KbarN scattering amplitudes calculated within a chirally motivated meson-baryon coupled-channel model are used self consistently to confront K^- atom data across the periodic table. Substantially deeper K^- nuclear potentials are obtained compared to the shallow potentials derived in some approaches from threshold amplitudes, with Re V_{chiral} = -(85+/-5) MeV at nuclear matter density. When KbarNN contributions are incorporated phenomenologically, a very deep K^- nuclear potential results, Re V_{chiral+phen.} = -(180+/-5) MeV, in agreement with density dependent potentials obtained in purely phenomenological fits to the data. Self consistent dynamical calculations of K^- nuclear quasibound states are reported and discussed.

Shell-model predictions for double-Lambda hypernuclei

It is shown how the recent shell-model determination of Lambda-N spin dependent interaction terms in Lambda hypernuclei allows for a reliable deduction of Lambda-Lambda separation energies in Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei across the nuclear p shell. Comparison is made with the available data, highlighting 11(Lambda-Lambda)Be and 12(Lambda-Lambda)Be which have been suggested as possible candidates for the KEK-E373 Hida event.

Comment on "Five-Body Cluster Structure of the Double-Lambda Hypernucleus Lambda-Lambda-11Be"

Hiyama et al. [PRL 104 (2010) 212502] have recently reported on a pioneering five-body alpha-alpha-n-Lambda-Lambda cluster-model calculation of Lambda-Lambda-11Be in order to confront a possible interpretation of the KEK-E373 HIDA event. Unfortunately, a six-body alpha-alpha-n-n-Lambda-Lambda calculation of Lambda-Lambda-12Be to confront another possible interpretation is beyond reach at present. Using experimental B-Lambda values with small corrections based on recently determined Lambda-N spin-dependent interaction parameters, we obtain binding-energy shell-model estimates for both Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei, concluding that neither Lambda-Lambda-11Be nor Lambda-Lambda-12Be provide satisfactory interpretation of the HIDA event. The shell model approach is tested by reproducing the measured double-Lambda binding energy of the double-Lambda hypernucleus Lambda-Lambda-13B.

Constraints on the threshold K- nuclear potential from FINUDA (stopped K-, pi-) hypernuclear spectra

1s(Lambda) hypernuclear formation rates in stopped K- reactions on several p-shell targets are derived from hypernuclear formation spectra measured recently by the FINUDA Collaboration and are compared with calculated 1s(Lambda) formation rates based on a KbarN coupled channels chiral model. The calculated rates are about 15% of the derived rates, depending weakly on the depth of the threshold K- nuclear potential. The A dependence of the calculated rates is in fair agreement with that of the derived rates, showing a slight preference for a deep density dependent K- nuclear potential of depth (150-200) MeV at nuclear matter density over a shallow potential of depth about 50 MeV. These new features originate from a substantial energy and density dependence found for the in-medium subthreshold (K- n --> pi- Lambda) branching ratio that serves as input to the K- capture at rest calculations.

Lambda-hypernuclear production in stopped (K-,pion) reactions reexamined

DWIA calculations of Lambda-hypernuclear production rates in stopped K- reactions on several p-shell targets used recently in experiments by the FINUDA Collaboration are reported. Chirally motivated K- + N -> pion + Lambda in-medium transition amplitudes are employed and the sensitivity of the calculated rates to the initial K- atomic wavefunctions and final pion distorted waves is studied. The calculated rates are compared with measured rates, wherever available, confirming earlier observations that (i) the calculated rates are generally lower than the measured rates, and (ii) the deeper the K- nuclear potential, the worse is the discrepancy. The A dependence of the calculated 1s Lambda hypernuclear production rates is discussed for the first time, providing a useful tool in resolving the issue of depth of the K- nuclear potential near threshold.

Multi-$\bar{K}$ hypernuclei

Relativistic mean field calculations of multi-$\bar{K}$ hypernuclei are performed by adding $K^-$ mesons to particle-stable configurations of nucleons, $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons. For a given hypernuclear core, the calculated $\bar{K}$ separation energy $B_{\bar{K}}$ saturates with the number of $\bar{K}$ mesons for more than roughly 10 mesons, with $B_{\bar{K}}$ bounded from above by 200 MeV. The associated baryonic densities saturate at values 2-3 times nuclear-matter density within a small region where the $\bar{K}$-meson densities peak, similarly to what was found for multi-$\bar{K}$ nuclei. The calculations demonstrate that particle-stable multistrange $\{N,Λ,Ξ\}$ configurations are stable against strong-interaction conversions $Λ\to N \bar{K}$ and $Ξ\to N \bar{K} \bar{K}$, confirming and strengthening the conclusion that kaon condensation is unlikely to occur in strong-interaction self-bound strange hadronic matter.

New results on Mesonic Weak Decay of $p$-shell $Λ$-Hypernuclei

The FINUDA experiment performed a systematic study of the charged mesonic weak decay channel of $p$-shell $Λ$-hypernuclei. Negatively charged pion spectra from mesonic decay were measured with magnetic analysis for the first time for ${^{7}_ΛLi}$, ${^{9}_ΛBe}$, ${^{11}_ΛB}$ and ${^{15}_ΛN}$. The shape of the $π^{-}$ spectra was interpreted through a comparison with pion distorted wave calculations that take into account the structure of both hypernucleus and daughter nucleus. Branching ratios $Γ_{π^{-}}/Γ_{tot}$ were derived from the measured spectra and converted to $π^{-}$ decay rates $Γ_{π^{-}}$ by means of known or extrapolated total decay widths $Γ_{tot}$ of $p$-shell $Λ$-hypernuclei. Based on these measurements, the spin-parity assignment $1/2^+$ for ${^{7}_ΛLi}$ and $5/2^+$ for ${^{11}_ΛB}$ ground-state are confirmed and a spin-parity $3/2^+$ for ${^{15}_ΛN}$ ground-state is assigned for the first time.

DUSEL Theory White Paper

The NSF has chosen the site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) to be in Lead, South Dakota. In fact, the state of South Dakota has already stepped up to the plate and contributed its own funding for the proposed lab, see http://www.sanfordlaboratoryathomestake.org/index.html. The final decision by NSF for funding the Initial Suite of Experiments for DUSEL will be made early in 2009. At that time the NSF Science Board must make a decision. Of order 200 experimentalists have already expressed an interest in performing experiments at DUSEL. In order to assess the interest of the theoretical community, the Center for Cosmology and Astro-Particle Physics (CCAPP) at The Ohio State University (OSU) organized a 3-day DUSEL Theory Workshop in Columbus, Ohio from April 4 - 6, 2008. The workshop focused on the scientific case for six proposed experiments for DUSEL: long baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, dark matter, astrophysical neutrinos, neutrinoless double beta decay and N-Nbar oscillations. The outcome of this workshop is the DUSEL Theory White paper addressing the scientific case at a level which may be useful in the decision making process for policy makers at the NSF and in the U.S. Congress. In order to assess the physics interest in the DUSEL project we have posted the DUSEL Theory White paper on the following CCAPP link http://ccapp.osu.edu/whitepaper.html . Please read the white paper and, if you are interested, use the link to show your support by co-signing the white paper.

Realistic calculations of nuclear disappearance lifetimes induced by neutron-antineutron oscillations

Realistic calculations of nuclear disappearance lifetimes induced by neutron-antineutron oscillations are reported for oxygen and iron, using antineutron nuclear potentials derived from a recent comprehensive analysis of antiproton atomic X-ray and radiochemical data. A lower limit of 3.3 x 10E8 s on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time is derived from the Super-Kamiokande I new lower limit of 1.77 x 10E32 yr on the neutron lifetime in oxygen. Antineutron scattering lengths in carbon and nickel, needed in trap experiments using ultracold neutrons, are calculated from updated antinucleon optical potentials at threshold, with results shown to be largely model independent.

Multi-$\bar{K}$ nuclei and kaon condensation

We extend previous relativistic mean-field (RMF) calculations of multi-$\bar K$ nuclei, using vector boson fields with SU(3) PPV coupling constants and scalar boson fields constrained phenomenologically. For a given core nucleus, the resulting $\bar K$ separation energy $B_{\bar K}$, as well as the associated nuclear and $\bar K$-meson densities, saturate with the number $κ$ of $\bar K$ mesons for $κ> κ_{\rm sat} \sim 10$. Saturation appears robust against a wide range of variations, including the RMF nuclear model used and the type of boson fields mediating the strong interactions. Because $B_{\bar K}$ generally does not exceed 200 MeV, it is argued that multi-$\bar K$ nuclei do not compete with multihyperonic nuclei in providing the ground state of strange hadronic configurations and that kaon condensation is unlikely to occur in strong-interaction self-bound strange hadronic matter. Last, we explore possibly self-bound strange systems made of neutrons and ${\bar K}^0$ mesons, or protons and $K^-$ mesons, and study their properties.

Dynamics of \bar{K} and multi-\bar{K} nuclei

We report on self-consistent calculations of single-K^- nuclear states and multi-Kbar nuclear states in 12C, 16O, 40Ca and 208Pb within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach. Gradient terms motivated by the p-wave resonance Sigma(1385) are found to play a secondary role for single-K^- nuclear systems where the mean-field concept is acceptable. Significant contributions from the Kbar N -> pi Lambda conversion mode, and from the nonmesonic Kbar NN -> YN conversion modes which are assumed to follow a rho^2 density dependence, are evaluated for the deep binding-energy range of over 100 MeV where the decay channel Kbar N -> pi Sigma is closed. Altogether we obtain K^- total decay widths of 50-100 MeV for binding energies exceeding 100 MeV in single-K^- nuclei. Multi-Kbar nuclear calculations indicate that the binding energy per Kbar meson saturates upon increasing the number of Kbar mesons embedded in the nuclear medium. The nuclear and Kbar densities increase only moderately and are close to saturation, with no indication of any kaon-condensation precursor.

Strange atoms, strange nuclei and kaon condensation

Analyses of comprehensive sets of strong-interaction data consisting of level shifts, widths and yields in strange atoms of K mesons and Sigma hyperons are reviewed. The introduction of density dependent optical potentials, in both cases, improves significantly the fit to the data. A strongly attractive antikaon-nuclear potential of order 150-200 MeV in nuclear matter is suggested by fits to the kaonic-atom data, with interesting possible repercussions on kaon condensation and on the evolution of strangeness in high-density stars. The case for relatively narrow, deeply bound antikaon atomic states is made, essentially independent of the nuclear potential depth. Dynamical models for calculating binding energies and widths of antikaon-nuclear states are discussed and a lower bound of approximately 50 MeV on the width is established. For Sigma atoms, the fitted potential becomes repulsive inside the nucleus, in agreement with recently reported (pi-,K+) spectra from KEK, implying that Sigma hyperons generally do not bind in nuclei. This repulsion significantly affects calculated compositions and masses of neutron stars.

$\bar{K}NN$ quasi-bound state and the $\bar{K}N$ interaction: coupled-channel Faddeev calculations of the $\bar{K}NN - πΣN$ system

Coupled-channel three-body calculations of an $I=1/2$, $J^π=0^-$ $\bar{K}NN$ quasi-bound state in the $\bar{K}NN - πΣN$ system were performed and the dependence of the resulting three-body energy on the two-body $\bar{K}N - πΣ$ interaction was investigated. Earlier results of binding energy $B_{K^-pp} \sim 50 -70$ MeV and width $Γ_{K^-pp} \sim 100$ MeV are confirmed [N.V. Shevchenko {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 082301 (2007)]. It is shown that a suitably constructed energy-independent complex $\bar{K}N$ potential gives a considerably shallower and narrower three-body quasi-bound state than the full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with other calculations is made.
