Optically Detected Magnetic Resonances of Nitrogen-Vacancy Ensembles in 13C Enriched Diamond

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the optically detected magnetic resonance signals for ensembles of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in 13C isotopically enriched single-crystal diamond. We observe four broad transition peaks with superimposed sharp features at zero magnetic field and study their dependence on applied magnetic field. A theoretical model that reproduces all qualitative features of these spectra is developed. Understanding the magnetic-resonance spectra of NV centers in isotopically enriched diamond is important for emerging applications in nuclear magnetic resonance.

Enhanced dual-beam excitation photoelectric detection of NV magnetic resonances in diamond

The core issue for the implementation of the diamond NV centre qubits technology is the sensitive readout of NV spin state. We have recently demonstrated the photoelectric detection of NV magnetic resonances (PDMR), anticipated to be faster and more sensitive than optical detection (ODMR). Here we report on a PDMR contrast of 9 % - three times enhanced compared to previous work - on shallow N-implanted diamond. Based on ab-initio modelling, we demonstrate a novel one-photon ionization dual-beam PDMR protocol. We predict that this scheme is significantly less vulnerable to the influence of defects such as substitutional nitrogen.

Single-photon emitting diode in silicon carbide

Electrically driven single-photon emitting devices have immediate applications in quantum cryptography, quantum computation and single-photon metrology. Mature device fabrication protocols and the recent observations of single defect systems with quantum functionalities make silicon carbide (SiC) an ideal material to build such devices. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of bright single photon emitting diodes. The electrically driven emitters display fully polarized output, superior photon statistics (with a count rate of $>$300 kHz), and stability in both continuous and pulsed modes, all at room temperature. The atomic origin of the single photon source is proposed. These results provide a foundation for the large scale integration of single photon sources into a broad range of applications, such as quantum cryptography or linear optics quantum computing.

Characterization of the nitrogen split interstitial defect in wurtzite aluminum nitride using density functional theory

We carried out Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid density functional theory plane wave supercell calculations in wurtzite aluminum nitride in order to characterize the geometry, formation energies, transition levels and hyperfine tensors of the nitrogen split interstitial defect. The calculated hyperfine tensors may provide useful fingerprint of this defect for electron paramagnetic resonance measurement.

The role of screening in the density functional applied on transition metal defects in semiconductors

We study selected transition metal related point defects in silicon and silicon carbide semiconductors by a range separated hybrid density functional (HSE06). We find that HSE06 does not fulfill the generalized Koopmans' Theorem for every defect which is due to the self-interaction error in the functional in such cases. Restoring the so-called generalized Koopmans' Condition with a simple correction in the functional can eliminate this error, and brings the calculated charge transition levels remarkably close to the experimental data as well as to the calculated quasi-particle levels from many-body perturbation theory.

Low Temperature Studies of Charge Dynamics of Nitrogen-Vacancy Defect in Diamond

In this paper, we study the photoinduced switching of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center between two different charge states - negative (NV-) and neutral (NV0) at liquid helium temperature. The conversion of NV- to NV0 on a single defect is experimentally proven and its rate scales quadratically with power under resonant excitation. In addition, we found that resonant excitation of the neutral NV changes the charge state, recovering its negative configuration. This type of conversion significantly improves spectral stability of NV- defect and allows high fidelity initialization of the spin qubit. A possible mechanism for ionization and recovery of the NV- defect is discussed. This study provides better understanding of the charge dynamics of the NV center, which is relevant for quantum information processing based on NV defect in diamond.

Dark states of single NV centers in diamond unraveled by single shot NMR

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is supposed to be a building block for quantum computing and nanometer scale metrology at ambient conditions. Therefore, precise knowledge of its quantum states is crucial. Here, we experimentally show that under usual operating conditions the NV exists in an equilibrium of two charge states (70% in the expected negative (NV-) and 30% in the neutral one (NV0)). Projective quantum non-demolition measurement of the nitrogen nuclear spin enables the detection even of the additional, optically inactive state. The nuclear spin can be coherently driven also in NV0 (T1 ~ 90 ms and T2 ~ 6 micro-s).
